We study, numerically and theoretically, defects in an anisotropic liquid that couple to the extrinsic geometry of a surface. Though the intrinsic geometry tends to confine topological defects to regions of large Gaussian curvature, extrinsic couplings tend to orient the order along the local direction of maximum or minimum bending. This additional frustration is generically unavoidable, and leads to complex ground-state thermodynamics. Using the catenoid as a prototype, we show, in contradistinction to the well-known effects of intrinsic geometry, that extrinsic curvature expels disclinations from the region of maximum curvature above a critical coupling threshold. Extrinsic geometry of strings and the Gauss map of surfaces in R sup n

This paper reports on a two-dimensional Euclidean string world sheet realized as a conformal immersion in R{sup n} which is mapped into the Grassmannian G{sub 2,n} through the generalized Gauss map. In order for the Grassmannian to represent tangent planes to a given surface, n {minus} 2 integrability conditions must be satisfied by the G{sub 2,n} fields. These conditions are explicitly derived for arbitrary n by realizing G{sub 2,n} as a quadric in CP{sup n{minus}1}. Both the intrinsic and the extrinsic geometrical properties of the string world sheet are expressed in terms of the Kahler {sigma} model fields.

Extrinsic geometry of world-sheet supersymmetry through generalized super-Gauss maps

In this paper, the extrinsic geometry of N = 1 world-sheet supersymmetry is studied through generalized super-Gauss map. The world sheet, realized as a conformally immersed super-Riemann surface S in R[sup n] (n = 3 is studied for simplicity) is mapped into the supersymmetric Grassmannian G[sub 2,3]. Pseudo-Riemannian geometry on a simplicial lattice and the extrinsic curvature tensor

We define the simplicial analogues of two concepts from differential topology: the concept of a point on the simplicial manifold and the concept of a tangent space on a simplicial manifold. We derive the simplicial analogues of parallel transport, the covariant derivative, connections, the Riemann curvature tensor, and the Einstein tensor. We construct the extrinsic curvature for a simplicial hypersurface using the simplicial covariant derivative.
