Quasi-matched propagation of ultra-short, intense laser pulses in plasma channels

The propagation of an ultrashort and relativistically intense laser pulse in a preformed plasma channel is investigated. The nonlinear paraxial wave equation describing the laser propagation in the plasma is solved both analytically and numerically. For any arbitrary temporal laser pulse profile with a given power (less then the critical power for self-focusing) and any prescribed transverse density profile in the channel, we determine the laser intensity distribution along the pulse ensuring quasi-matched propagation, neglecting non-paraxial effects. Copropagation of a laser pulse and a relativistic electron beam in a corrugated plasma channel has been proposed for the direct laser acceleration of electrons [Palastro et al., Phys. Rev. E 77, 036405 (2008)]. The corrugated plasma channel allows for the guiding of laser pulses composed of subluminal spatial harmonics. Phase matching between the electron beam and the spatial harmonics results in acceleration, but for high beam densities, the pulse energy can be rapidly depleted. Radiation generated by bunched electron beams in corrugated plasma channels

The excitation of radiation by bunched electron beams propagating in miniature corrugated plasma channels is considered. It is shown that the rate at which power is radiated by a beam is characterized by impedance that depends on the properties of the channel. For experimentally obtainable parameters radiation bursts of multiple millijoules can be achieved. The spectrum of the radiation can be made narrow and controlled through the properties of the channel. The effects of spatial variations in the channel parameters on the spectrum are also described.

Modification of modulated plasma plumes for the quasi-phase-matching of high-order harmonics in different spectral ranges

We demonstrate the technique allowing the fine tuning of the distance between the laser-produced plasma plumes on the surfaces of different materials, as well as the variation of the sizes of these plumes. The modification of plasma formations is based on the tilting of the multi-slit mask placed between the heating laser beam and target surface, as well as the positioning of this mask in the telescope placed on the path of heating radiation.
