OSTI Open Gov Initiatives

OpenGov Whitehouse Open Gov OSTI Open Gov Intiative

As part of the Administration-wide Open Gov Initiative, OSTI is contributing various tools and data sets that have been developed as part of its DOE program mission, making R&D results transparent and easily accessible by the scientific community and the public. Several OSTI-led initiatives, products and services are listed within the DOE Open Government Plan issued in April 2010.

In December 2009, OSTI submitted 17 tools and services to data.gov, including XML scientific dataset services, scientific search widgets, and science-related RSS feeds. Data.gov is part of the Obama administration Open Government Initiative designed to increase the ability of the public to easily find, download, and use data sets that are generated and held by the Federal Government. Subsequent to the OSTI submission to data.gov, Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the DOE assets were included in the National Assets initiative. Five of the data sets hosted by OSTI were recently identified by the Department of Energy as “high value” data sets (see news item). The five high value data sets from the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) include Energy Citations Database (data services), Information Bridge (data services), Geothermal/Geothermal Legacy Data (data services), and DOE Patents Database (data services). These tools have made DOE R&D results more transparent and have made scientific information access more convenient than ever before.
