Yale and the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission Consultant,

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This is a description, based largely on personal discussions, of the contributions of men from the Yale University School of Medicine to the saga of the immediate and long-term studies on the medical effects of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They played key roles in the immediate studies of bomb effects, in the creation of long-term studies of delayed effects, and in elevating the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission after 1955 to a position of excellence in its studies and relations with the Japanese. The accumulation of the information presented in this paper derives from research for the preparation of the history of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. In 1975, the commission was passed to Japanese leadership as the Radiation Effects Research Foundation. Yale holds a rich tradition of involvement in the Orient, extending for one and a half centuries. An important contribution was a major role in the creation of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in 1946 and its resurgence to a position of major strength in the late 1950s. The significance of Yale in the Orient goes back to September 1834 when Peter Parker, who had trained in theology and medicine, arrived in Canton as the first

American distress at the horrors produced by the atomic bombs released on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 generated a laudable desire to salvage something positive from the damage. Immediately after the war, the American government sent survey teams to the bombed cities to evaluate the extent and nature of the damage. An account of those early days has appeared in The Yale Journal [ 1,2]. The report of these studies led to the establishment of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC),

The major 1989 efforts have been on two aspects of experiments at TRIUMF. One effort was production of muonic hydrogen and muonic deuterium into a vacuum. The study includes rates relevant to muon-catalyzed fusion, and if there are found an adequate number of muons in the 2-S state, then precision energies will be measured. The second effort was to develop plans for kaonic atoms at the kaon factory. In addition, analyses from the experiments with pionic atoms at LAMPF were completed.

The goals of this research are the experimental testing of fundamental theories of physics beyond the standard model and the exploration of cosmic phenomena through the techniques of particle physics. We are working on the MACRO experiment, which employs a large-area underground detector to search fore grand unification magnetic monopoles and dark matter candidates and to study cosmic ray muons as well as low- and high-energy neutrinos; the Chooz experiment to search for reactor neutrino oscillations at a distance of 1 km from the source; a new proposal (the Perry experiment) to construct a one-kiloton liquid scintillator in the Fairport, Ohio underground facility IMB to study neutrino oscillations with a 13 km baseline; and development of technology for improved liquid scintillators and for very-low-background materials in support of the MACRO and Perry experiments and for new solar neutrino experiments.

The experimental goals are focused on developing an understanding of strong interactions and the structure of hadronic systems by determination of the electromagnetic response; these goals will be accomplished through coincidence detection of final states. Nuclear modeling objectives are to organize and interpret the data through a consistent description of a broad spectrum of reaction observables; calculations are performed in a nonrelativistic diagrammatic framework as well as a relativistic QHD approach. Work is described according to the following arrangement: direct knockout reactions (completion of [sup 16]O(e,e[prime]p), [sup 12]C(e,e[prime]pp) progress, large acceptance detector physics simulations), giant resonance studies (intermediate-energy experiments with solid-state detectors, the third response function in [sup 12]C(e,e[prime]p[sub 0]) and [sup 16]O(e,e[prime]p[sub 0]), comparison of the [sup 12]C(e, e[prime]p[sub 0]) and [sup 16]O(e,e[prime]p[sub 3]) reactions, quadrupole strength in the [sup 16]O(e,e[prime][alpha][sub 0]) reaction, quadrupole strength in the [sup 12]C(e,e[prime][alpha]) reaction, analysis of the [sup 12]C(e,e[prime]p[sub 1]) and [sup 16]O(e,e[prime]p[sub 3]) angular distributions, analysis of the [sup 40]Ca(e,e[prime]x) reaction at low q, analysis of the higher-q [sup 12]C(e,e[prime]x) data from Bates), models of nuclear structure (experimental work, Hartree-Fock calculations, phonon excitations in spherical nuclei, shell model calculations, variational methods for relativistic fields), and instrumentation development efforts (developments at CEBAF, CLAS contracts, BLAST developments).

Substantial progress was in several areas of accelerator dynamics. For developing understanding of longitudinal adiabatic dynamics, and for creating efficiency enhancements of recirculating free-electron lasers, was substantially completed. A computer code for analyzing the critical KAM tori that bound the dynamic aperture in circular machines was developed. Studies of modes that arise due to the interaction of coating beams with a narrow-spectrum impedance have begun. During this research educational and research ties with the accelerator community at large have been strengthened.

Progress report, (December 1, 1975--November 30, 1976). [Dept. of Chemistry, The Johns Hopkins Univ

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

Significant progress was made in this research period in the following categories: (1) Reaction of C/sup +/(/sup 4/P) with molecular hydrogen. The reaction of the ground state, i.e., C/sup +/(/sup 2/P), has been previously studied in our laboratory; and, since this reaction has become a prototype reaction which is being explored by computational scientists, we have extended this study to the first excited state of C/sup +/, i.e., /sup 4/P. Actually the dynamics of very few excited-state reactions have been studied; however, they are of importance in radiation and hot atom chemistry, in controlled thermonuclear processes, in combustion chemistry, etc., and hence our activity in this area. In the case of combustion, excited-state ion--molecule reactions are important as prototypes for excited neutral--neutral reactions, which are much more difficult to study. It is hence of considerable value to understand the behavior of excited ion--molecule reactions. (2) Recently we have improved the ion optics in our spectrometry with a concomitant increased energy resolution of the instrument. This has enabled us to realize a new ''first'' in the field by observing vibrational structure in the CH/sup +/ ion produced by the reaction C/sup +/(/sup 2/P)(H/sub 2/,H)CH/sup +/. (3) The increased instrumental resolution has permitted another first in the field by demonstrating that the rotational energy of the product ion manifests itself in the position of the limiting value of the translational exoergicity (Q) of the reaction. Careful measurements under good energy resolution on the reaction F/sup +/(H/sub 2/,H)FH/sup +/ and others show that, if a significant amount of rotational energy is present in the product ion, its limiting value of Q will be lower than that thermodynamically expected if no rotational energy is present. (4) Work on the cross section and kinematics of the reaction Cl/sup +/(H/sub 2/,H)ClH/sup +/ has been initiated and is proceeding smoothly and (5) our observations on electron fragmentation of molecules also continue.

The major emphasis of this project continues to be on fundamental symmetries and parameters of the Standard Model. A test of a quark model prediction was also done. The projects in the current period have been the following: LSND, a neutrino oscillation experiment at LAMPF; E791, a search for the decays K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}e and K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} ee; E871, tests and preparations for an upgrade proposal; and E888, a search for the H dibaryon. The LSND (Large Scintillator Neutrino Detector) is under construction at this time. Progress in the construction schedule has been accelerated with the expectation of being ready to accept beam in March 1993. The automated system for testing photomultiplier tubes is in full production, and should be able to certify a fun complement of tubes for installation by October 1992. Results of an earlier LAMPF experiment, E764, on the interaction of muon neutrinos with carbon nuclei have been submitted for publication. A thorough 'blind' analysis of the E791 data set has just been brought to completion. Final results for the upper limits (90% C.L.) on the branching ratios for the decays K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}e and K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} ee are 3.3 {times} 10{sup {minus}11} and 4.1 {times} 10{sup {minus}11}, respectively. The final result for the branching ratio for K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{mu} from all the data (720 events) is (7.0 {plus minus} 0.4 {plus minus} 0.2) {times} 10{sup {minus}9}. The potential of the E791 detector for rare K decays has reached its limit. Before disassembly it was used to mount a search (E888) for a possible long-lived six-quark state, the H. At the same time studies have been made of an upgraded version of the experiment (E871) that will make use of a portion of the existing apparatus.

Grid-connected Integrated Community Energy System. Preliminary report, Phase II, August 9--November 8, 1977. [Clark Univ. , Worcester

SciTech Connect

Clark University in the New England area represents an attractive site for demonstration of cogeneration. In Phase I of the program, the team reported: that the system of choice is a diesel generator sized at about Clark's peak electric demand; it should burn No. 6 fuel oil; the system can run at nearly full capacity the year round, sell 40 percent of its output, and receive backup as needed from Massachusetts Electric Company; the system should deliver a rate of return of 15 to 20 percent; and there appear to be no institutional or environmental problems. An update on a number of issues that were incompletely resolved in the Phase I report is provided. In Section 2 additional documentation on institutional issues involved in the proposed demonstration plant is provided. In Section 3 a preliminary design analysis that clearly defines the choice of engine and provides revised operating data in light of additional load profile studies is provided. In particular, it is found that: a Sulzer No. 6-oil-burning 1405-kW diesel is the system of choice; the engine should be housed in a separate building in close proximity to the existing central boiler and steam distribution points; and as a result of detailed summer load studies, the engine as specified can be operated with higher capacity factors than anticipated in Phase I. In Section 4 a revised cost estimate using information developed in Sections 2 and 3 is given. No significant change in net cash flow was found, and there was an internal rate of return of 15 percent. The overall conclusion is therefore that, though some details have changed, the Clark demonstration project continues to appear highly attractive. (MCW)

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

During the year February 1, 1978 to January 31, 1979, the major activities under Task A were completion of the analysis of data taken in Experiment number 99, measurement of the cross section for completion of new ..pi../sup -/p..--> pi../sup -/..pi../sup +/n, apparatus and software for Experiment number 337, measurement of the cross section for ..pi../sup -/p..--> pi../sup -/..pi../sup +/n at 200 and 229 MeV, taking data for Experiment number 337, continued preparation for Experiment number 309, and double charge exchange in the disintegration of /sup 16/O, /sup 40/Ca and /sup 208/Pb, consideration of a possible collaboration for detection of protons from ..mu../sup -/ capture on nuclei and initiation of an association with physicists at Bates on measurements of (e,e'). The completed analysis of Experiment number 99 has left previous conclusions, that the integrated reaction cross section at the lowest energy is twice that interpolated from early measurements, intact. Experiment number 337 was mounted and the preliminary results for the reaction cross section at 229 MeV agree well with Experiment number 99. The more sophisticated instrumentation used in the latest measurements builds confidence in the validity of these results. An experiment on double charge exchange is being prepared and one on ..mu../sup -/ capture is being considered. A graduate student from the University of Wyoming has begun thesis research at Bates.

The overall objective is to study the mechanisms and the energy dependence of heavy ion fragmentation by studying the reactions of heavy ion projectiles (e.g. [sup 4]He, [sup 16]O, [sup 20]Ne, [sup 28]Si, [sup 56]Fe) in a variety of targets (H, He, C, Si, Cu, Pb) and at a number of beam energies exceeding 0.1 GeV/nucleon. The results have application to questions in high-energy nuclear astrophysics. Most of the discussion is on low-energy [sup 16]O,[sup 28]Si data analysis. The description includes analysis procedures and techniques, detector calibrations, data selections and normalizations. Cross section results for the analysis are also presented. 83 figs., 6 tabs., 73 refs.

A Simulation of the Optical Attenuation of TPB Coated Light-guide Detectors

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This note describes simple simulations which were performed in order to understand the attenuation behaviors of acrylic light-guides operated in air and argon, which were characterized in \\cite{Baptista:2012bf}. Whilst these simulations are only at the level of sophistication of a toy model, they illustrate interesting non-exponential light attenuation effects and the differences between operating light-guide based detectors in argon and air environments. We investigate the effects of surface absorption, surface roughness and wavelength dependence, and use a model tuned on the light-guide attenuation curve measured in air to make a prediction of the light-guide attenuation curve in argon. This curve is compared with data from a liquid argon test stand, and an improvement over a simple exponential model is observed.

3 3 by D. Milstead (Stockholm Univ.) and E.J. Weinberg (Columbia Univ.). The symmetry between electric and magnetic fields in the sourcefree Maxwell's equations naturally suggests that electric charges might have magnetic counterparts, known as magnetic monopoles. Although the greatest interest has been in the supermassive monopoles that are a firm prediction of all grand unified theories, one cannot exclude the possibility of lighter monopoles, even though there is at present no strong theoretical motivation for these. In either case, the magnetic charge is constrained by a quantization condition first found by Dirac [1]. Consider a monopole with magnetic charge Q M and a Coulomb magnetic field B = Q M 4π ˆ r r 2 . (1) Any vector potential A whose curl is equal to B must be singular along some line running from the origin to spatial infinity. This Dirac string singularity could potentially

7 7 by B.D. Fields (Univ. of Illinois) and S. Sarkar (Univ. of Oxford). Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) offers the deepest reliable probe of the early universe, being based on well-understood Standard Model physics [1-4]. Predictions of the abundances of the light elements, D, 3 He, 4 He, and 7 Li, synthesized at the end of the "first three minutes," are in good overall agreement with the primordial abundances inferred from observational data, thus validating the standard hot big-bang cosmology (see [5] for a review). This is particularly impressive given that these abundances span nine orders of magnitude - from 4 He/H ∼ 0.08 down to 7 Li/H ∼ 10 -10 (ratios by number). Thus BBN provides powerful constraints on possible deviations from the standard cosmology [2], and on new physics beyond the Standard Model [3]. 20.1. Theory The synthesis of the light elements is sensitive
