The Gateway Computational Web Portal: Developing Web Services for High Performance Computing

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We describe the Gateway computational web portal, which follows a traditional three-tiered approach to portal design. Gateway provides a simplified, ubiquitously available user interface to high performance computing and related resources. This approach, while successful for straightforward applications, has limitations that make it difficult to support loosely federated, interoperable web portal systems. We examine the emerging standards in the so-called web services approach to business-to-business electronic commerce for possible solutions to these shortcomings and outline topics of research in the emerging area of computational grid web services.

Association search in semantic web: search + inference

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Association search is to search for certain instances in semantic web and then make inferences from and about the instances we have found. In this paper, we propose the problem of association search and our preliminary solution for it using Bayesian network. We first minutely define the association search and its categorization. We then define tasks in association search. In terms of Bayesian network, we take ontology taxonomy as network structure in Bayesian network. We use the query log of instances to estimate the network parameters. After the Bayesian network is constructed, we give the solution for association search in the network.

Live search for mobile: Web services by voice on the cellphone

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Live Search for Mobile is a cellphone application that allows users to interact with web-based information portals. Currently the implementation is focused on information related to local businesses: their phone numbers and addresses, directions, reviews, maps of the surrounding area, and traf?c. This paper describes a speech-recognition interface which was recently developed for the application, which allows the users to interact by voice. The paper presents the overall architecture, the user interface, the design and implementation of the speech recognition grammars, and initial performance results indicating that for sentence level utterance recognition we achieve 60 to 65 % of human capability. Index Terms — multimodal, speech recognition, cellphone, user interface, grammars

Searching OSTI products using the deep web Searching OSTI products using the deep web August 2009 Searching OSTI products using the deep web. Listen Now If you search on the internet using commercial search engines such as Google or Yahoo or Microsoft's search engine, you are typically searching what is known as the surface web. These are pages that are able to be crawled by these search engines and indexed by these search engines. When you do a search on those commercial engines, then its automatically gathering information on what they are able to crawl. There is another part of the internet which is actually many believe is 10 to a hundred to a thousands times larger that the surface web, called the deep web. And this is where a lot of the most significant scientific information resides in databases in the deep web. And, so, this information

Guided Google: A Meta Search Engine and its Implementation Using the Google Distributed Web Services

E-Print Network (OSTI)

With the ubiquity of the Internet and Web, search engines have been sprouting like mushrooms after a rainfall. However, innovative search engines and guided search capabilities have started appearing only in recent years. For instance, Google, which is one of the popular search engines, supports Web Services that allow external applications to issue Web search queries that are actually processed using a Google's commodity cluster computer made up of 15,000 PC nodes. The goals of these applications are to help ease and guide the searching efforts of novice web users towards their desired objectives. A number of implementations of such services are emerging. This paper proposes a guided meta-search engine, called Guided Google that serves as an advanced interface to the actual Google.com search engine.

Adding a Visualization Feature to Web Search Engines: It’s Time

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Since the first world wide web (WWW) search engine quietly entered our lives in 1994, the “information need” behind web searching has rapidly grown into a multi-billion dollar business that dominates the internet landscape, drives e-commerce traffic, propels global economy, and affects the lives of the whole human race. Today’s search engines are faster, smarter, and more powerful than those released just a few years ago. With the vast investment pouring into research and development by leading web technology providers and the intense emotion behind corporate slogans such as “win the web” or “take back the web,” I can’t help but ask why are we still using the very same “text-only” interface that was used 13 years ago to browse our search engine results pages (SERPs)? Why has the SERP interface technology lagged so far behind in the web evolution when the corresponding search technology has advanced so rapidly? In this article I explore some current SERP interface issues, suggest a simple but practical visual-based interface design approach, and argue why a visual approach can be a strong candidate for tomorrow’s SERP interface.

Redips: Backlink Search and Analysis on the Web for Business Intelligence Analysis

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The World Wide Web presents significant opportunities for business intelligence analysis as it can provide information about a company’s external environment and its stakeholders. Traditional business intelligence analysis on the Web has focused on simple keyword searching. Recently, it has been suggested that the incoming links, or backlinks, of a company’s Web site (i.e., other Web pages that have a hyperlink pointing to the company of interest) can provide important insights about the company’s “online communities. ” Although analysis of these communities can provide useful signals for a company and information about its stakeholder groups, the manual analysis process can be very time-consuming for business analysts and consultants. In this article, we present a tool called Redips that automatically integrates backlink meta-searching and text-mining techniques to facilitate users in performing such business intelligence analysis on the Web. The architectural design and implementation of the tool are presented in the article. To evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of Redips, an experiment was conducted to compare the tool with two popular business intelligence analysis methods—using backlink search engines and manual browsing. The experiment results showed that Redips was statistically more effective than both benchmark methods (in terms of Recall and F-measure) but required more time in search tasks. In terms of user satisfaction, Redips scored statistically higher than backlink search engines in all five measures used, and also statistically higher than manual browsing in three measures.

Mining User Dwell Time for Personalized Web Search Re-Ranking

SciTech Connect

We propose a personalized re-ranking algorithm through mining user dwell times derived from a user's previously online reading or browsing activities. We acquire document level user dwell times via a customized web browser, from which we then infer conceptword level user dwell times in order to understand a user's personal interest. According to the estimated concept word level user dwell times, our algorithm can estimate a user's potential dwell time over a new document, based on which personalized webpage re-ranking can be carried out. We compare the rankings produced by our algorithm with rankings generated by popular commercial search engines and a recently proposed personalized ranking algorithm. The results clearly show the superiority of our method. In this paper, we propose a new personalized webpage ranking algorithmthrough mining dwell times of a user. We introduce a quantitative model to derive concept word level user dwell times from the observed document level user dwell times. Once we have inferred a user's interest over the set of concept words the user has encountered in previous readings, we can then predict the user's potential dwell time over a new document. Such predicted user dwell time allows us to carry out personalized webpage re-ranking. To explore the effectiveness of our algorithm, we measured the performance of our algorithm under two conditions - one with a relatively limited amount of user dwell time data and the other with a doubled amount. Both evaluation cases put our algorithm for generating personalized webpage rankings to satisfy a user's personal preference ahead of those by Google, Yahoo!, and Bing, as well as a recent personalized webpage ranking algorithm.

SEARCHING FOR COMETS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB: THE ORBIT OF 17P/HOLMES FROM THE BEHAVIOR OF PHOTOGRAPHERS

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

We performed an image search for 'Comet Holmes', using the Yahoo{exclamation_point} Web search engine, on 2010 April 1. Thousands of images were returned. We astrometrically calibrated-and therefore vetted-the images using the Astrometry.net system. The calibrated image pointings form a set of data points to which we can fit a test-particle orbit in the solar system, marginalizing over image dates and detecting outliers. The approach is Bayesian and the model is, in essence, a model of how comet astrophotographers point their instruments. In this work, we do not measure the position of the comet within each image, but rather use the celestial position of the whole image to infer the orbit. We find very strong probabilistic constraints on the orbit, although slightly off the Jet Propulsion Lab ephemeris, probably due to limitations of our model. Hyperparameters of the model constrain the reliability of date meta-data and where in the image astrophotographers place the comet; we find that {approx}70% of the meta-data are correct and that the comet typically appears in the central third of the image footprint. This project demonstrates that discoveries and measurements can be made using data of extreme heterogeneity and unknown provenance. As the size and diversity of astronomical data sets continues to grow, approaches like ours will become more essential. This project also demonstrates that the Web is an enormous repository of astronomical information, and that if an object has been given a name and photographed thousands of times by observers who post their images on the Web, we can (re-)discover it and infer its dynamical properties.

Adaptive time-to-live strategies for query result caching in web search engines

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Abstract. An important research problem that has recently started to receive attention is the freshness issue in search engine result caches. In the current techniques in literature, the cached search result pages are associated with a fixed time-to-live (TTL) value in order to bound the staleness of search results presented to the users, potentially as part of a more complex cache refresh or invalidation mechanism. In this paper, we propose techniques where the TTL values are set in an adaptive manner, on a per-query basis. Our results show that the proposed techniques reduce the fraction of stale results served by the cache and also decrease the fraction of redundant query evaluations on the search engine backend compared to a strategy using a fixed TTL value for all queries.

Grid infrastructure to support science portals for large scale instruments.

SciTech Connect

Soon, a new generation of scientific workbenches will be developed as a collaborative effort among various research institutions in the US. These scientific workbenches will be accessed in the Web via portals. Reusable components are needed to build such portals for different scientific disciplines, allowing uniform desktop access to remote resources. Such components will include tools and services enabling easy collaboration, job submission, job monitoring, component discovery, and persistent object storage. Based on experience gained from Grand Challenge applications for large-scale instruments, we demonstrate how Grid infrastructure components can be used to support the implementation of science portals. The availability of these components will simplify the prototype implementation of a common portal architecture.

Web Science ” Dossier Presentation

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The Internet is now a constant in all parts of life and at all levels: personal, academic and professional. In only a few years, the Internet has changed the way we relate, study, work, shop, spend our free time, etc. The web, the collection of resources accessible over the Internet, has become a gargantuan oracle where people search, create and share information on any subject, and where they communicate globally, breaking down the barriers of time and space. The possibility of being connected almost all the time from anywhere means that users have a perception of the web as something that is always available to cover any need. The rapid evolution of the technology available, both hardware and software, together with its relatively low cost, means that ever more users access the web and use it for more reasons. Web science, which has become a hot topic recently, looks to explain the evolution of the web as a complex organism and

ProPortal: A Database for Prochlorococcus

DOE Data Explorer (OSTI)

Prochlorococcus is a marine cyanobacterium that numerically dominates the mid-latitude oceans, and is the smallest known oxygenic phototroph. All isolates described thus far can be assigned to either a tightly clustered high-light (HL) adapted clade, or a more divergent low-light (LL) adapted group. They are closely related to, but distinct from, marine Synechococcus. The genomes of 12 strains have been sequenced and they range in size from 1.6 to 2.6 Mbp. They represent diverse lineages, spanning the rRNA diversity (97 to 99.93% similarity) of cultured representatives of this group. Our analyses of these genomes inform our understanding of how adaptation occurs in the oceans along gradients of light, nutrients, and other environmental factors, providing essential context for interpreting rapidly expanding metagenomic datasets. [Copied from http://proportal.mit.edu/project/prochlorococcus/] ProPortal allows users to browse and search genome date for not only Prochlorococcus, but Cyanophage and Synechococcus. Microarray data, environmental cell concentration data, and metagenome information are also available.

Focused Crawling of the Deep Web Using Service Class Descriptions

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Dynamic Web data sources--sometimes known collectively as the Deep Web--increase the utility of the Web by providing intuitive access to data repositories anywhere that Web access is available. Deep Web services provide access to real-time information, like entertainment event listings, or present a Web interface to large databases or other data repositories. Recent studies suggest that the size and growth rate of the dynamic Web greatly exceed that of the static Web, yet dynamic content is often ignored by existing search engine indexers owing to the technical challenges that arise when attempting to search the Deep Web. To address these challenges, we present DynaBot, a service-centric crawler for discovering and clustering Deep Web sources offering dynamic content. DynaBot has three unique characteristics. First, DynaBot utilizes a service class model of the Web implemented through the construction of service class descriptions (SCDs). Second, DynaBot employs a modular, self-tuning system architecture for focused crawling of the DeepWeb using service class descriptions. Third, DynaBot incorporates methods and algorithms for efficient probing of the Deep Web and for discovering and clustering Deep Web sources and services through SCD-based service matching analysis. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the service class discovery, probing, and matching algorithms and suggest techniques for efficiently managing service discovery in the face of the immense scale of the Deep Web.

Faceted Semantic Search for Personalized Social Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Actual social networks (like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, ...) need to deal with vagueness on ontological indeterminacy. In this paper is analyzed the prototyping of a faceted semantic search for personalized social search using the "joint meaning" in a community environment. User researches in a "collaborative" environment defined by folksonomies can be supported by the most common features on the faceted semantic search. A solution for the context-aware personalized search is based on "joint meaning" understood as a joint construal of the creators of the contents and the user of the contents using the faced taxonomy with the Semantic Web. A proof-of concept prototype shows how the proposed methodological approach can also be applied to existing presentation components, built with different languages and/or component technologies.

Attacks on Local Searching Tools

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The Google Desktop Search is an indexing tool, currently in beta testing, designed to allow users fast, intuitive, searching for local files. The principle interface is provided through a local web server which supports an interface similar to Google.com's normal web page. Indexing of local files occurs when the system is idle, and understands a number of common file types. A optional feature is that Google Desktop can integrate a short summary of a local search results with Google.com web searches. This summary includes 30-40 character snippets of local files. We have uncovered a vulnerability that would release private local data to an unauthorized remote entity. Using two different attacks, we expose the small snippets of private local data to a remote third party.

DP9: An OAI Gateway Service for Web Crawlers

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Many libraries and databases are closed to general-purpose Web crawlers, and they expose their content only through their own search engines. At the same time many researchers attempt to locate technical papers through general-purpose Web search engines. DP9 is an open source gateway service that allows general search engines, (e.g. Google, Inktomi) to index OAI-compliant archives. DP9 does this by providing consistent URLs for repository records, and converting them to OAI queries against the appropriate repository when the URL is requested. This allows search engines that do not support the OAI protocol to index the "deep Web" contained within OAI compliant repositories.

Web services roadmap: The Semantic Web perspective

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Recently the field of Web services has gained focus both in industry and academia. While industry has been mostly interested in standardisation and promotion of the technology, academia has been looking for ways to fit the technology into other frameworks, such as the Semantic Web. Anyway, despite of the increased academic and commercial interest to Web services, there are currently only few case studies available about Web services in the Semantic Web context. Moreover, according to authors ’ knowledge, there is no publicly available study analysing which data is currently mostly provided/required by Web services. In this paper we target these shortcomings by providing a case study of semantically annotated commercial and governmental Web services. We analyse interaction and potential synergy between commercial and governmental Web services. Also the role ontologies for semantic integration of Web services is analysed. Moreover, we identify the most common data exploited by current Web services. 1

Demonstrating Intelligent Crawling and Archiving of Web Applications

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We demonstrate here a new approach to Web archival crawling, based on an application-aware helper that drives crawls of Web applications according to their types (especially, according to their content management systems). By adapting the crawling strategy to the Web application type, one is able to crawl a given Web application (say, a given forum or blog) with fewer requests than traditional crawling techniques. Additionally, the application-aware helper is able to extract semantic content from the Web pages crawled, which results in a Web archive of richer value to an archive user. In our demonstration scenario, we invite a user to compare application-aware crawling to regular Web crawling on the Web site of their choice, both in terms of efficiency and of experience in browsing and searching the archive. E-Print Network (OSTI)

The field of information extraction from the Web emerged with the growth of the Web and the multiplication of online data sources. This paper is an analysis of information extraction methods. It presents a service oriented approach for web information extraction considering both web data management and extraction services. Then we propose an SOA based architecture to enhance flexibility and on-the-fly modification of web extraction services. An implementation of the proposed architecture is proposed on the middleware level of Java Enterprise Edition (JEE) servers.

Context-based metrics for evaluating changes to web pages

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The web provides a lot of fluid information but this information changes, moves, and even disappears over time. Bookmark lists, portals, and paths are collections where the building blocks are web pages, which are susceptible to these changes. A lot of research, both in industry and in academia, focuses on organizing this vast amount of data. In this thesis, I present context-based algorithms for measuring changes to a document. The methods proposed use other documents in a collection as the context for evaluating changes in the web pages. These metrics will be used in maintaining paths as the individual pages in paths change. This approach will enhance the evaluations of change made by the currently existing Path Manager, in the Walden's Paths project that is being developed in the Center for the Study of Digital Libraries at Texas A&M University.

Flint: Google-basing the Web

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Several Web sites deliver a large number of pages, each publishing data about one instance of some real world entity, such as an athlete, a stock quote, a book. Even though it is easy for a human reader to recognize these instances, current search engines are unaware of them. Technologies for the Semantic Web aim at achieving this goal; however, so far they have been of little help in this respect, as semantic publishing is very limited. We have developed a system, called FLINT, for automatically searching, collecting and indexing Web pages that publish data representing an instance of a certain conceptual entity. FLINT takes as input a small set of labeled sample pages: it automatically infers a description of the underlying conceptual entity and then searches the Web for other pages containing data representing the same entity. FLINT automatically extracts data from the collected pages and stores them into a semi-structured self-describing database, such as Google Base. Also, the collected pages can be used to populate a custom search engine; to this end we rely on the facilities provided by Google Co-op. 1.

Search Combinators

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The ability to model search in a constraint solver can be an essential asset for solving combinatorial problems. However, existing infrastructure for defining search heuristics is often inadequate. Either modeling capabilities are extremely limited or users are faced with a general-purpose programming language whose features are not tailored towards writing search heuristics. As a result, major improvements in performance may remain unexplored. This article introduces search combinators, a lightweight and solver-independent method that bridges the gap between a conceptually simple modeling language for search (high-level, functional and naturally compositional) and an efficient implementation (low-level, imperative and highly non-modular). By allowing the user to define application-tailored search strategies from a small set of primitives, search combinators effectively provide a rich domain-specific language (DSL) for modeling search to the user. Remarkably, this DSL comes at a low implementation cost to the...

Automated identification of web communities for business intelligence analysis

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Analysts often search the Web for business intelligence using traditional search engines which provide keyword-based search. Recently, it has been suggested that the incoming links, or backlinks, of a company’s Web site can provide useful information about the company’s “Web communities”. Backlinks refer to other Web pages which have a hyperlink pointing to the company of interest and these pages form a cyber community on the Web. Analysis of these communities can provide useful signals for a company or information about its stakeholder groups, but the manual analysis process can be very time-consuming for business analysts and consultants. In this study, we report the design and evaluation of a tool called Redips that integrates automatic backlink meta-searching and text mining techniques to facilitate users in identifying such cyber communities on the Web for business intelligence purposes. The system architecture of the tool is presented and an experimental study was reported. The experiment results showed that Redips performed significantly better than two benchmark methods, namely backlink search engines and manual browsing.

Radiation portal monitor system and method

DOE Patents (OSTI)

A portal monitoring system has a cosmic ray charged particle tracker with a plurality of drift cells. The drift cells, which can be for example aluminum drift tubes, can be arranged at least above and below a volume to be scanned to thereby track incoming and outgoing charged particles, such as cosmic ray muons, whilst also detecting gamma rays. The system can selectively detect devices or materials, such as iron, lead, gold and/or tungsten, occupying the volume from multiple scattering of the charged particles passing through the volume and can also detect any radioactive sources occupying the volume from gamma rays emitted therefrom. If necessary, the drift tubes can be sealed to eliminate the need for a gas handling system. The system can be employed to inspect occupied vehicles at border crossings for nuclear threat objects.

Drying of fiber webs

DOE Patents (OSTI)

A process and an apparatus for high-intensity drying of fiber webs or sheets, such as newsprint, printing and writing papers, packaging paper, and paperboard or linerboard, as they are formed on a paper machine. The invention uses direct contact between the wet fiber web or sheet and various molten heat transfer fluids, such as liquified eutectic metal alloys, to impart heat at high rates over prolonged durations, in order to achieve ambient boiling of moisture contained within the web. The molten fluid contact process causes steam vapor to emanate from the web surface, without dilution by ambient air; and it is differentiated from the evaporative drying techniques of the prior industrial art, which depend on the uses of steam-heated cylinders to supply heat to the paper web surface, and ambient air to carry away moisture, which is evaporated from the web surface. Contact between the wet fiber web and the molten fluid can be accomplished either by submersing the web within a molten bath or by coating the surface of the web with the molten media. Because of the high interfacial surface tension between the molten media and the cellulose fiber comprising the paper web, the molten media does not appreciately stick to the paper after it is dried. Steam generated from the paper web is collected and condensed without dilution by ambient air to allow heat recovery at significantly higher temperature levels than attainable in evaporative dryers.

Harnessing the Deep Web: Present and Future

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Over the past few years, we have built a system that has exposed large volumes of Deep-Web content to Google.com users. The content that our system exposes contributes to more than 1000 search queries per-second and spans over 50 languages and hundreds of domains. The Deep Web has long been acknowledged to be a major source of structured data on the web, and hence accessing Deep-Web content has long been a problem of interest in the data management community. In this paper, we report on where we believe the Deep Web provides value and where it does not. We contrast two very different approaches to exposing Deep-Web content -- the surfacing approach that we used, and the virtual integration approach that has often been pursued in the data management literature. We emphasize where the values of each of the two approaches lie and caution against potential pitfalls. We outline important areas of future research and, in particular, emphasize the value that can be derived from analyzing large collections of potenti...

Portal Vein Embolization Before Liver Resection: A Systematic Review

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

This is a review of literature on the indications, technique, and outcome of portal vein embolization (PVE). A systematic literature search on outcome of PVE from 1990 to 2011 was performed in Medline, Cochrane, and Embase databases. Forty-four articles were selected, including 1,791 patients with a mean age of 61 {+-} 4.1 years. Overall technical success rate was 99.3 %. The mean hypertrophy rate of the FRL after PVE was 37.9 {+-} 0.1 %. In 70 patients (3.9 %), surgery was not performed because of failure of PVE (clinical success rate 96.1 %). In 51 patients (2.8 %), the hypertrophy response was insufficient to perform liver resection. In the other 17 cases, 12 did not technically succeed (0.7 %) and 7 caused a complication leading to unresectability (0.4 %). In 6.1 %, resection was cancelled because of local tumor progression after PVE. Major complications were seen in 2.5 %, and the mortality rate was 0.1 %. A head-to-head comparison shows a negative effect of liver cirrhosis on hypertrophy response. The use of n-butyl cyanoacrylate seems to have a greater effect on hypertrophy, but the difference with other embolization materials did not reach statistical significance. No difference in regeneration is seen in patients with cholestasis or chemotherapy. Preoperative PVE has a high technical and clinical success rate. Liver cirrhosis has a negative effect on regeneration, but cholestasis and chemotherapy do not seem to have an influence on the hypertrophy response. The use of n-butyl cyanoacrylate may result in a greater hypertrophy response compared with other embolization materials used.

Google Web APIs - an Instrument for Webometric Analyses?

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Introduction The analysis of the Internet and its applications touches upon varied fields of research such as information science, computer science, economics, and psychology. One reason for the growing scientific interest in the Internet is the already high and still growing amount of web users, applications, contents, and web servers worldwide. Despite a variety of different search engines, there is no doubt about the predominance of Google search engine technology today. Among the factors that have added decisively to Google's success are that over a long period of time, Google has offered the largest index, innovative new services and highly optimized performance and usability. This poster introduces Google Web APIs (Google APIs) as an instrument and playground for webometric studies. Several examples of Google APIs implementations are given. Our examples show that this Google Web Service can be used successfully for informetric Internet based studies albeit with some restriction

Special Nuclear Material Portal Monitoring at the Nevada Test Site

SciTech Connect

Prior to April 2007, acceptance and performance testing of the various Special Nuclear Material (SNM) monitoring devices at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) was performed by the Radiological Health Instrumentation department. Calibration and performance testing on the PM-700 personnel portal monitor was performed, but there was no test program for the VM-250 vehicle portal monitor. The handheld SNM monitors, the TSA model 470B, were being calibrated annually, but there was no performance test program. In April of 2007, the Material Control and Accountability Manager volunteered to take over performance testing of all SNM portal monitors at NTS in order to strengthen the program and meet U.S. Department of Energy Order requirements. This paper will discuss the following activities associated with developing a performance testing program: changing the culture, learning the systems, developing and implementing procedures, troubleshooting and repair, validating the process, physical control of equipment, acquisition of new systems, and implementing the performance test program.

Portals 4 network API definition and performance measurement

SciTech Connect

Portals is a low-level network programming interface for distributed memory massively parallel computing systems designed by Sandia, UNM, and Intel. Portals has been designed to provide high message rates and to provide the flexibility to support a variety of higher-level communication paradigms. This project developed and analyzed an implementation of Portals using shared memory in order to measure and understand the impact of using general-purpose compute cores to handle network protocol processing functions. The goal of this study was to evaluate an approach to high-performance networking software design and hardware support that would enable important DOE modeling and simulation applications to perform well and to provide valuable input to Intel so they can make informed decisions about future network software and hardware products that impact DOE applications.

Web Mining – the Ontology Approach

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The World Wide Web today provides users access to extremely large number of Web sites many of which contain information of education and commercial values. Due to the unstructured and semi-structured nature of Web pages and the design idiosyncrasy of Web sites, it is a challenging task to develop digital libraries for organizing and managing digital content from the Web. Web mining research, in its last 10 years, has on the other hand made significant progress in categorizing and extracting content from the Web. In this paper, we represent ontology as a set of concepts and their inter-relationships relevant to some knowledge domain. The knowledge provided by ontology is extremely useful in defining the structure and scope for mining Web content. We will therefore review Web mining and describe the ontology approach to Web mining. The application of these Web mining techniques to digital library systems will also be discussed.

Silicon web process development

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

Silicon dendritic web is a ribbon form of silicon produced from the melt without die shaping, and capable of fabrication into solar cells with greater than 15% AM1 conversion efficiency. This quarterly report describes the work carried out during the period April to June 1980, as part of Phase III of a DOE/JPL-sponsored effort to develop silicon web process technology compatible with the national goals for low cost photovoltaic output power. We have successfully demonstrated eight hours of silicon web growth with closed loop melt level control, a key contract milestone. The result was achieved using a feedback system in which the change in output from a laser melt level sensor was used to control the rate at which silicon pellets were fed to replace the material frozen into web crystal. The melt level was controlled to about +- 0.1mm, well within the range required for stable long term web growth. This is an important step toward the development of a fully automated silicon web growth machine. A second major highlight of this quarter was the completion of an engineering design for a semi-automated web growth machine embodying all the desired features developed so far as part of this program (including e.g. melt replenishment, level sensing and control) as well as some system simplifications. The completed design will serve as a basis for complete system automation.

Advanced Millimeter-Wave Security Portal Imaging Techniques

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Millimeter-wave imaging is rapidly gaining acceptance for passenger screening at airports and other secured facilities. This paper details a number of techniques developed over the last several years including novel image reconstruction and display techniques, polarimetric imaging techniques, array switching schemes, as well as high frequency high bandwidth techniques. Implementation of some of these methods will increase the cost and complexity of the mm-wave security portal imaging systems. RF photonic methods may provide new solutions to the design and development of the sequentially switched linear mm-wave arrays that are the key element in the mm-wave portal imaging systems.

Web worlds, web-colouring matrices, and web-mixing matrices

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We introduce a new combinatorial object called a web world that consists of a set of web diagrams. The diagrams of a web world are generalizations of graphs, and each is built on the same underlying graph. Instead of ordinary vertices the diagrams have pegs, and edges incident to a peg have different heights on the peg. The web world of a web diagram is the set of all web diagrams that result from permuting the order in which endpoints of edges appear on a peg. The motivation comes from particle physics, where web diagrams arise as particular types of Feynman diagrams describing scattering amplitudes in non-Abelian gauge (Yang-Mills) theories. To each web world we associate two matrices called the web-colouring matrix and web-mixing matrix. The entries of these matrices are indexed by ordered pairs of web diagrams (D_1,D_2), and are computed from those colourings of the edges of D_1 that yield D_2 under a transformation determined by each colouring. We show that colourings of a web diagram (whose constituent indecomposable diagrams are all unique) that lead to a reconstruction of the diagram are equivalent to order-preserving mappings of certain partially ordered sets (posets) that may be constructed from the web diagrams. For web worlds whose web graphs have all edge labels equal to 1, the diagonal entries of web-mixing and web-colouring matrices are obtained by summing certain polynomials determined by the descents in permutations in the Jordan-Holder set of all linear extensions of the associated poset. We derive tri-variate generating generating functions for the number of web worlds according to three statistics and enumerate the number of different web diagrams in a web world. Three special web worlds are examined in great detail, and the traces of the web-mixing matrices calculated in each case.
