Graduate acoustics education in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

While graduate study in acoustics takes place in several colleges and schools at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) including Communication Fine Arts Geosciences and Natural Sciences this poster focuses on the acoustics program in Engineering. The core of this program resides in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Acoustics faculty in each department supervise graduate students in both departments. One undergraduate and seven graduate acoustics courses are cross-listed in ME and ECE. Instructors for these courses include staff at Applied Research Laboratories at UT Austin where many of the graduate students have research assistantships. The undergraduate course taught every fall begins with basic physical acoustics and proceeds to draw examples from different areas of engineering acoustics. Three of the graduate courses are taught every year: a two-course sequence on physical acoustics and a transducers course. The remaining four graduate acoustics courses taught in alternate years are on nonlinear acoustics underwater acoustics ultrasonics and architectural acoustics. An acoustics seminar is held most Fridays during the long semesters averaging over ten per semester since 1984. The ME and ECE departments both offer Ph.D. qualifying exams in acoustics.

Graduate studies in acoustics and noise control in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The acoustics community at Purdue University will be described with special emphasis on the graduate program in Mechanical Engineering (ME). Purdue is home to around 30 faculty who study various aspects of acoustics and related disciplines and so there are many classes to choose from as graduate students structure their plans of study to complement their research activities and to broaden their understanding of the various aspects of acoustics. In Mechanical Engineering the primary emphasis is on understanding noise generation noise propagation and the impact of noise on people as well as development of noise control strategies experimental techniques and noise and noise impact prediction tools. The ME acoustics research is conducted at the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories which houses several large acoustics chambers that are designed to facilitate testing of a wide array mechanical systems reflecting the Laboratories long history of industry-relevant research. Complementing the acoustics research Purdue has vibrations dynamics and electromechanical systems research programs and is home to a collaborative group of engineering and psychology professors who study human perception and its integration into engineering design. There are also very strong ties between ME acoustics faculty and faculty in Biomedical Engineering and Speech Language and Hearing Sciences.

Wind for Schools (Poster)

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

As the United States dramatically expands wind energy deployment, the industry is challenged with developing a skilled workforce and addressing public resistance. Wind Powering America's Wind for Schools project addresses these issues by developing Wind Application Centers (WACs) at universities; WAC students assist in implementing school wind turbines and participate in wind courses, by installing small wind turbines at community "host" schools, by implementing teacher training with interactive curricula at each host school. This poster provides an overview of the first two years of the Wind for Schools project, primarily supporting activities in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, and Idaho.

Aquariums Aquariums Nature Bulletin No. 577 October 24, 1959 Forest Preserve District of Cook County Daniel Ryan, President Roberts Mann, Conservation Editor David H. Thompson, Senior Naturalist SCHOOL AQUARIUMS Everybody seems to be born with a special curiosity about animals that live in water. Partly, this is because the underwater world is so different from our life on land partly because aquatic animals are of so many strange kinds or are so secretive that they are "sights unseen" to most people. The best way to get better acquainted with many of the smaller ones is to catch, in a pond or stream, some small fish, tadpoles, crayfish, snails, or any of a wide variety of water insects. Carry them back home or to school in a bucket of water. Then they can be put in glass containers where they can be kept alive, their habits watched, and their life histories studied.

CERN Winter School on Supergravity, Strings, and Gauge Theory 2010

ScienceCinema (OSTI)

The CERN Winter School on Supergravity, Strings, and Gauge Theory is the analytic continuation of the yearly training school of the former EC-RTN string network "Constituents, Fundamental Forces and Symmetries of the Universe". The 2010 edition of the school is supported and organized by the CERN Theory Divison, and will take place from Monday January 25 to Friday January 29, at CERN. As its predecessors, this school is meant primarily for training of doctoral students and young postdoctoral researchers in recent developments in theoretical high-energy physics and string theory. The programme of the school will consist of five series of pedagogical lectures, complemented by tutorial discussion sessions in the afternoons. Previous schools in this series were organized in 2005 at SISSA in Trieste, and in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 at CERN, Geneva. Other similar schools have been organized in the past by the former related RTN network "The Quantum Structure of Spacetime and the Geometric Nature of Fundamental Interactions". This edition of the school is not funded by the European Union. The school is funded by the CERN Theory Division, and the Arnold Sommerfeld Center at Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich. Scientific committee: M. Gaberdiel, D. Luest, A. Sevrin, J. Simon, K. Stelle, S. Theisen, A. Uranga, A. Van Proeyen, E. Verlinde Local organizers: A. Uranga, J. Walcher

Summer Schools in Nuclear and Radiochemistry

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The ACS Summer Schools in Nuclear and Radiochemistry (herein called Summer Schools) were funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and held at San Jose State University (SJSU) and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The Summer Schools offer undergraduate students with U.S. citizenship an opportunity to complete coursework through ACS accredited chemistry degree programs at SJSU or the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SBU). The courses include lecture and laboratory work on the fundamentals and applications of nuclear and radiochemistry. The number of students participating at each site is limited to 12, and the low student-to-instructor ratio is needed due to the intense nature of the six-week program. To broaden the students perspectives on nuclear science, prominent research scientists active in nuclear and/or radiochemical research participate in a Guest Lecture Series. Symposia emphasizing environmental chemistry, nuclear medicine, and career opportunities are conducted as a part of the program. The Department of Energys Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) renewed the five-year proposal for the Summer Schools starting March 1, 2007, with contributions from Biological and Environmental Remediation (BER) and Nuclear Physics (NP). This Final Technical Report covers the Summer Schools held in the years 2007-2011.

Energy is largely taken for granted within our society, but that perception is changing as the economic and environmental impacts of our current energy supply structure are more widely understood. The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Wind Powering America program (at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory) sponsors the Wind for Schools Project to raise awareness in rural America about the benefits of wind energy while simultaneously developing a wind energy knowledge base in future leaders of our communities, states, and nation. SUPPORT FOR HU CFRT SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL FUSION WORKSHOP

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Nine summer fusion science research workshops for minority and female high school students were conducted at the Hampton University Center for Fusion Research and Training from 1996 to 2005. Each workshop was of the duration of eight weeks. In all 35 high school students were mentored. The students presented 28 contributed papers at the annual meetings of the American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics. These contributed papers were very well received by the plasma physics and fusion science research community. The students won a number of prestigious local, state, and national honors, awards, prizes, and scholarships. The notable among these are the two regional finalist positions in the 1999 Siemens-Westinghouse Science and Technology Competitions; 1st Place U.S. Army Award, 2006; 1st Place U.S. Naval Science Award, 2006; Yale Science and Engineering Association Best 11th Grade Project, 2006; Society of Physics Students Book Award, 2006; APS Corporate Minority Scholarship and others. This workshop program conducted by the HU CFRT has been an exemplary success, and served the minority and female students exceptionally fruitfully. The Summer High School Fusion Science Workshop is an immensely successful outreach activity conducted by the HU CFRT. In this workshop, we train, motivate, and provide high quality research experiences to young and talented high school scholars with emphasis on under-represented minorities and female students in fusion science and related areas. The purpose of this workshop is to expose minority and female students to the excitement of research in science at an early stage in their academic lives. It is our hope that this may lead the high school students to pursue higher education and careers in physical sciences, mathematics, and perhaps in fusion science. To our knowledge, this workshop is the first and only one to date, of fusion science for under-represented minorities and female high school students at an HBCU. The faculty researchers in the HU CFRT mentor the students during summers. Mentors spend a considerable amount of time and efforts in training, teaching, guiding and supervising research projects. The HU CFRT has so far conducted nine workshops during the summers of 1996-2000 and 2002-2005. The first workshop was conducted in summer 1996. Students for the workshop are chosen from a national pool of exceptionally talented high school rising seniors/juniors. To our knowledge, most of these students have gone on to prestigious universities such as Duke University, John Hopkins University, CalTech, UCLA, Hampton University, etc. after completing their high school. For instance, Tiffany Fisher, participant of the 1996 summer workshop completed her BS in Mathematics at Hampton University in May 2001. She then went on to Wake Forest University at Winston-Salem, North Carolina to pursue graduate studies. Anshul Haldipur, participant of the 1999 summer workshop, began his undergraduate studies at Duke University in 2000. Christina Nguyen and Ilissa Martinez, participants of the 2000 summer workshop, are pursuing their undergraduate degrees at the UCLA and Florida State University respectively. The organizing committee of the APS DPP annual meeting invited Dr. Punjabi to deliver an invited talk on training the next generation of fusion scientists and engineers at the 2005 APS DPP meeting in Denver, CO. The organizing committee distributed a special flier with the Bulletin to highlight this invited talk and another talk on education as well the expo. This has given wide publicity and recognition to our workshops and Hampton University. Prof. Punjabi's talk: 'LI2 2: Training the next generation of fusion scientists and engineers: summer high school fusion science workshop, Bull. Amer. Phys. Soc. 50, 221 (2005)' was very well-received. He talked about HU education and outreach initiative and the HU CFRT Summer High School Workshop. The audience had a considerable number of questions about our workshops and the High School to PhD Pipeline in fusion science. Professor William Mathews of

Wind for Schools: Developing Educational Programs to Train the Next Generation of Wind Energy Experts (Poster)

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

As the world moves toward a vision of expanded wind energy, the industry is faced with the challenges of obtaining a skilled workforce and addressing local wind development concerns. Wind Powering America's Wind for Schools Program works to address these issues. The program installs small wind turbines at community "host" schools while developing wind application centers at higher education institutions. Teacher training with interactive and interschool curricula is implemented at each host school, while students at the universities assist in implementing the host school systems while participating in other wind course work. This poster provides an overview of the program's objectives, goals, approach, and results.

Green Your School Green Your School Green Your School Illustration of a school bus. Schools around the country are finding ways to use energy as efficiently as possible, not only to set an example for their students and communities, but also to save on the bottom line. Given that energy costs are second only to salaries in terms of school budgets, many school leaders are investing in energy-efficiency technologies in their buildings and fuel-saving technologies in their buses. Check out a few facts about making your school green. Schools spend more on energy than any other expense except personnel. A high-performance school doesn't have to cost more to construct than a conventionally built school. High-performance schools can lower a school district's operating costs by up to 30%.
