As tailgaters got ready for the football game (Princeton vs. Lafayette) in Lot 21, others took the short walk into Jadwin Gym to take part in the University's Annual Community & Staff Day. PPPL was represented by the Science Education Department and in usual Science Ed. fashion, we did not disappoint! The table was busy all day with kids and adults equally fascinated by what they learned... Plasma! From the hair-raising Van de Graaff generator to the innovative Plasma Speaker to the surprising vacuum pump marshmallow experiment, folks were wowed by what they saw. Brau - University of Oregon November 23, 2010 The universe is dark and mysterious, more so than even Einstein imagined. While modern science has established deep understanding of ordinary matter, unidentified elements ("Dark Matter" and "Dark Energy") dominate the structure of the universe, its behavior and its destiny. What are these curious elements? We are now working on answers to these and other challenging questions posed by the universe with experiments at particle accelerators on Earth. Results of this research may revolutionize our view

No mystery is bigger than dark energy - the elusive force that makes up three-quarters of the Universe and is causing it to expand at an accelerating rate. KTVU Channel 2 health and science editor John Fowler will moderate a panel of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory scientists who use phenomena such as exploding stars and gravitational lenses to explore the dark cosmos. Saul Perlmutter heads the Supernova Cosmology Project, which pioneered the use of precise observations of exploding stars to study the expansion of the Universe. His international team was one of two groups who independently discovered the amazing phenomenon known as dark energy, and he led a collaboration that designed a satellite to study the nature of this dark force. He is an astrophysicist at Berkeley Lab and a professor of physics at UC Berkeley. David Schlegel is a Berkeley Lab astrophysicist and the principal investigator of Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), the largest of four night-sky surveys being conducted in the third phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, known as SDSS-III. BOSS will generate a 3-D map of two million galaxies and quasars, using a specially built instrument outfitted with 1,000 optical fibers and mounted on the SDSS telescope in New Mexico. Alexie Leauthaud is Chamberlain Fellow at Berkeley Lab. Her work probes dark matter in the Universe using a technique called gravitational lensing. When gravity from a massive object such as a cluster of galaxies warps space around it, this can distort our view of the light from an even more distant object. The scale and direction of this distortion allows astronomers to directly measure the properties of both dark matter and dark energy.

Interdisciplinarity and Systems Science to Improve Population Health: A View from the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Fueled by the rapid pace of discovery, humankind's ability to understand the ultimate causes of preventable common disease burdens and to identify solutions is now reaching a revolutionary tipping point. Achieving optimal health and well-being for all members of society lies as much in the understanding of the factors identified by the behavioral, social, and public health sciences as by the biological ones. Accumulating advances in mathematical modeling, informatics, imaging, sensor technology, and communication tools have stimulated several converging trends in science: an emerging understanding of epigenomic regulation; dramatic successes in achieving population health-behavior changes; and improved scientific rigor in behavioral, social, and economic sciences. Fostering stronger interdisciplinary partnerships to bring together the behavioralsocialecologic models of multilevel causes of the causes and the molecular, cellular, and, ultimately, physiological bases of health and disease will facilitate breakthroughs to improve the public's health. The strategic vision of the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is rooted in a collaborative approach to addressing the complex and multidimensional issues that challenge the public's health. This paper describes OBSSR's four key programmatic directions (next-generation basic science, interdisciplinary research, systems science, and a problem-based focus for population impact) to illustrate how interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives can foster the vertical integration of research among biological, behavioral, social, and population levels of analysis over the lifespan and across generations. Interdisciplinary and multilevel approaches are critical both to the OBSSR's mission of integrating behavioral and social sciences more fully into the NIH scientific enterprise and to the overall NIH mission of utilizing science in the pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.

Fiberglass health and safety update: Moving beyond the science

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Fiberglass has provided numerous acoustical and insulation benefits for over 50 years. Today engineers architects and specifiers must weigh the benefits derived from various products against the potential risks that may be involved. During the past several years significant efforts have been undertaken to evaluate the potential health hazards and risks associated with exposure to fiberglass materials to facilitate meaningful benefit/risk analyses. Large studies of workers and various animal tests have been conducted and reviewed by numerous groups and agencies. While many scientists believe that the research indicates that fiberglass is not very hazardous if at all to humans others contend that it may be just as harmful as asbestos. While disagreement among scientists is nothing new the confusion and controversy created in the minds of nontoxicologists and epidemiologists observing the debates is unfortunate. Comfort should be taken in the extensive weight of the scientific evidence that is available on this important material. Most important we should understand the limitations of science and focus on the handling and use recommendations which can assure the safe use of fiberglass products.

Alliance for Computational Science Collaboration HBCU Partnership at Fisk University. Final Report 2001

SciTech Connect

Computational Science plays a big role in research and development in mathematics, science, engineering and biomedical disciplines. The Alliance for Computational Science Collaboration (ACSC) has the goal of training African-American and other minority scientists in the computational science field for eventual employment with the Department of Energy (DOE). The involvements of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the Alliance provide avenues for producing future DOE African-American scientists. Fisk University has been participating in this program through grants from the DOE. The DOE grant supported computational science activities at Fisk University. The research areas included energy related projects, distributed computing, visualization of scientific systems and biomedical computing. Students' involvement in computational science research included undergraduate summer research at Oak Ridge National Lab, on-campus research involving the participation of undergraduates, participation of undergraduate and faculty members in workshops, and mentoring of students. These activities enhanced research and education in computational science, thereby adding to Fisk University's spectrum of research and educational capabilities. Among the successes of the computational science activities are the acceptance of three undergraduate students to graduate schools with full scholarships beginning fall 2002 (one for master degree program and two for Doctoral degree program).

A systems science approach to fatigue management inresearch and health care

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract The purpose of this article was to highlight innovative analytic approaches in symptom science. Complex systems modeling is discussed using fatigue as an example. Fatigue is a common symptom among individuals of any age. It can be acute or chronic, and it can vary across the day and on weekends compared with weekdays. Fatigue can overlap with other symptoms, has many dimensions, and impacts daily function as well as society at large. With the complexities surrounding symptom science, innovative models are needed to advance our understanding of factors within the person, contextual and situational factors, and workplace or health care system factors that impact the symptom experience. Advances in methodologies, such as complex systems modeling, allow for more innovative methods to study the complexities of the symptom experience, design better ways to intervene and manage symptoms, and ultimately improve outcomes related to symptom management, quality of life, and health care utilization.
