Training Graduate and Undergraduate Students in Simulation and Risk Assessment for Carbon Sequestration

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and injecting it into deep underground formations for storage (carbon capture and underground storage, or CCUS) is one way of reducing anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Gas or aqueous-phase leakage may occur due to transport via faults and fractures, through faulty well bores, or through leaky confining materials. Contaminants of concern include aqueous salts and dissolved solids, gaseous or aqueous-phase organic contaminants, and acidic gas or aqueous-phase fluids that can liberate metals from aquifer minerals. Understanding the mechanisms and parameters that can contribute to leakage of the CO2 and the ultimate impact on shallow water aquifers that overlie injection formations is an important step in evaluating the efficacy and risks associated with long-term CO2 storage. Three students were supported on the grant Training Graduate and Undergraduate Students in Simulation and Risk Assessment for Carbon Sequestration. These three students each examined a different aspect of simulation and risk assessment related to carbon dioxide sequestration and the potential impacts of CO2 leakage. Two performed numerical simulation studies, one to assess leakage rates as a function of fault and deep reservoir parameters and one to develop a method for quantitative risk assessment in the event of a CO2 leak and subsequent changes in groundwater chemistry. A third student performed an experimental evaluation of the potential for metal release from sandstone aquifers under simulated leakage conditions. This study has resulted in two student first-authored published papers {Siirila, 2012 #560}{Kirsch, 2014 #770} and one currently in preparation {Menke, In prep. #809}.

Dissertation grant proposals as writing games: An exploratory study of two L2 graduate students' experiences

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Previous studies have examined grant proposals written by faculty rather than graduate students. Little research has focused on L2 students' grant writing challenges, particularly with their dissertation grant proposals. Drawing on Casanave's (2002) writing games, this study aims to explore how two doctoral grant writers from two disciplines (biophysics and musicology) enculturate into their discourse communities at an American university. Through qualitative analyses of interviews with students and their grant proposals, I report strategies and problems of the students in four themes: learning how to play, following or bending the rules, deciding whether to play, and identifying who to cite in the grant proposals. I show that understanding grant genre systems formed the major part of the games, where students had to learn certain rules and interpret funding agencies' expectations. Despite multiple challenges, the students played the games through repeated participatory practice, citing important figures' works, and networking with more experienced players of the communities to improve their proposals. The findings reveal that grant writing helped the students to see the big picture of their dissertation projects. This study raises awareness of L2 graduate students' dissertation grant writing practices, and it calls attention to discipline-specific grant writing instruction.

Enhancing Graduate Student Communication to General Audiences through Blogging about Nanotechnology and Sustainability

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We have developed and assessed a multiauthor science blog on the topic of nanotechnology and sustainability as a tool to improve the written communication and public engagement skills of graduate students. Focus group studies revealed that after participation in the blog, student authors felt more confident and capable of communicating technical topics to general audiences. Students' research mentors viewed this as an important component of their students' education, as indicated by survey data. Important design aspects of this effort include participation of an editor as well as having flexible content and target-audience guidelines. We have explicitly outlined aspects of the effort we see as critical in order to enable others to replicate this model in related settings.

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

ABSTRACT The state of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in the United States has seen some unfavorable assessments over the past decade. In early February, 2010 the House of Representatives heard testimony on undergraduate and graduate education. The message from the panel, which included experts from academia, STEM-based industries, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) was dire and required an urgent response. The experts along with the committee???¢????????s chairperson, U. S. Representative Daniel Lipinski (D-IL) cited that the complexity of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics applications and coursework and the methodology utilized to teach these subjects are forcing students out of these disciplines. As the National Academies described in its 2007 report Rising Above the Gathering Storm, successful STEM education is not just an academic pursuit???¢????????it???¢????????s a necessity for competing in the knowledge-based economy that the United States had a key role in creating. The potential for action is being made available again as the America COMPETES Act of 2007 is up for reauthorization. Its initial focus was on STEM education at the K-12 levels, but efforts at the undergraduate and graduate levels are needed to retain students to fill the jobs left vacant as baby boomers retire. The Educational Advancement Alliance, Inc. (EAA) has for two decades created programs that have not only addressed the issues of ensuring that students are aptly prepared for college but have focused its efforts over the past decade on increasing the number of students who pursue degrees in STEM disciplines. For the EAA, the introduction of the wonders of science begins at the elementary and middle school level via the Learning Lab, a state-of-the-art mobile science laboratory that visits students in grades 4-6 at the various schools throughout Philadelphia and The Math/Tech Academy which meets on Saturdays for students in grades 5-7. For the past two years the EAA has assisted college graduates in their quest to attain advanced degrees in STEM by providing fellowships. The EAA continued this effort by recruiting and providing fellowships to students who aspired to continue their education at the graduate level. The fellowships provided funding for tuition, fees, books, technology, and stipends to assist with room, board, and living expenses during the academic year and salary, transportation, and living expenses to those students who secured internships with the Department of Energy. Additionally the EAA designed and implemented needed support systems to ensure successful completion of the Masters degree programs, including but not limited to membership in professional associations, attendance at industry and academic conferences, and professional development workshops, and tutorial assistance if needed. This program assisted over 80 students directly and society-at-large by helping to educate and develop future physicists, engineers, biostatisticians, and researchers who will have the necessary skillsets to fill the increasing numbers of positions that require such expertise.

Graduate acoustics education in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

While graduate study in acoustics takes place in several colleges and schools at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) including Communication Fine Arts Geosciences and Natural Sciences this poster focuses on the acoustics program in Engineering. The core of this program resides in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Acoustics faculty in each department supervise graduate students in both departments. One undergraduate and seven graduate acoustics courses are cross-listed in ME and ECE. Instructors for these courses include staff at Applied Research Laboratories at UT Austin where many of the graduate students have research assistantships. The undergraduate course taught every fall begins with basic physical acoustics and proceeds to draw examples from different areas of engineering acoustics. Three of the graduate courses are taught every year: a two-course sequence on physical acoustics and a transducers course. The remaining four graduate acoustics courses taught in alternate years are on nonlinear acoustics underwater acoustics ultrasonics and architectural acoustics. An acoustics seminar is held most Fridays during the long semesters averaging over ten per semester since 1984. The ME and ECE departments both offer Ph.D. qualifying exams in acoustics.

2010 PLASMONICS GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE/GORDON-KENAN GRADUATE STUDENT SEMINAR, JUNE 13-18

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The field of plasmonics lies at the forefront of current revolutionary developments in optics at nanoscale dimensions, with broad applications in the fields of biology, chemistry, and engineering. Advancing these applications will require an enhanced focus on the fundamental science of plasmonics in new and exotic regimes. This 2010 Gordon Conference on Plasmonics will focus on recent advances in fundamental and applied plasmonics. As with past conferences, this meeting will bring together top researchers and future leaders for substantial interactions between students, young speakers, and senior figures in the field. Participants should expect lively discussion during the sessions, intermingled with unstructured time where ideas move, collaborations form, and connections are made. Invited talks will cover a diverse range of topics, including active devices, coherence effects, metamaterials and cloaking, quantum optical phenomena, and plasmons in exotic media and in new wavelength regimes. At the conclusion of the conference, our final session will look forward and begin defining upcoming challenges and opportunities for plasmonics.

Stuttering attitudes of students: Professional, intracultural, and international comparisons

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

AbstractPurpose The study sought to identify major-specific, training, and cultural factors affecting attitudes toward stuttering of speech-language pathology (SLP) students. Method Eight convenience samples of 50 students each from universities in the USA and Poland filled out the Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes-Stuttering (POSHAS) in English or Polish, respectively. USA samples included undergraduate and graduate students in SLP majors or non-SLP majors as well as a sample of non-SLP students who were Native Americans. Polish samples included SLP (logopedics), psychology, and mixed majors. Results SLP students held more positive attitudes than non-SLP students in both countries. Graduate students held more positive attitudes than undergraduate students in the USA, and this effect was stronger for SLP than for non-SLP students. Native American students stuttering attitudes were similar to other American non-SLP students attitudes. Polish student attitudes were less positive overall than those of their American student counterparts. Conclusion SLP students attitudes toward stuttering are affected by a halo effect of being in that major, by specific training in fluency disorders, and by various cultural factors, yet to be clearly understood.Educational objectives: The reader will be able to: (a) describe major factors affecting SLP students attitudes toward stuttering; (b) describe similarities and differences in attitudes toward stuttering of students from the USA and Poland; (c) describe similarities and differences in attitudes toward stuttering of Native American students from the USA and non-Native American students.

High Performance Computing Education for Students in Computational Engineering

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Numerical simulation using high performance computing has become a key technology for many scientific disciplines. Consequently, high performance computing courses constitute an essential component within the undergraduate and graduate programs in Computational Engineering at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. These courses are also offered as optional courses in other degree programs, such as for majors in computer science. 1 The Erlangen Computational Engineering Program The courses in high performance computing at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg are primarily motivated by the the Computational Engineering (CE) program that has been initiated by the Department of Computer Science in 1997 as a prototype two-year postgraduate program leading to a Master degree. The corresponding undergraduate program has been started in 1999. Together these two programs are accepting approximately 30 new undergraduate students and 45 graduate students, annually. The traditional German university degree in the sciences and the engineering disciplines is the Diplom which corresponds approximately to the academic level of a Master degree in the US

Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) Center for Hybrid Electric Drivetrains and Control Strategies

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Beginning the fall semester of 1999, The University of Maryland, Departments of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research served as a U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) Center for Hybrid Electric Drivetrains and Control Strategies. A key goal was to produce a graduate level education program that educated and prepared students to address the technical challenges of designing and developing hybrid electric vehicles, as they progressed into the workforce. A second goal was to produce research that fostered the advancement of hybrid electric vehicles, their controls, and other related automotive technologies. Participation ended at the University of Maryland after the 2004 fall semester. Four graduate courses were developed and taught during the course of this time, two of which evolved into annually-taught undergraduate courses, namely Vehicle Dynamics and Control Systems Laboratory. Five faculty members from Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and the Institute for Systems Research participated. Four Ph.D. degrees (two directly supported and two indirectly supported) and seven Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering resulted from the research conducted. Research topics included thermoelectric waste heat recovery, fuel cell modeling, pre- and post-transmission hybrid powertrain control and integration, hybrid transmission design, H{sub 2}-doped combustion, and vehicle dynamics. Many of the participating students accepted positions in the automotive industry or government laboratories involved in automotive technology work after graduation. This report discusses the participating faculty, the courses developed and taught, research conducted, the students directly and indirectly supported, and the publication list. Based on this collection of information, the University of Maryland firmly believes that the key goal of the program was met and that the majority of the participating students are now contributing to the advancement of automotive technology in this country.

He is conducting research as part of the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. While some magnets hold holiday-themed photographs of family members on a fridge, others detect cancers or help trains reach speeds faster than the strongest tornados on record. So, it is no surprise that magnets continue to attract and keep the attention of researchers like Justin Vadas, an undergraduate student in chemistry and physics at Earlham College, who are

Programs for attracting under-represented minority students to graduate school and research careers in computational science. Final report for period October 1, 1995 - September 30, 1997

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Programs have been established at Florida A & M University to attract minority students to research careers in mathematics and computational science. The primary goal of the program was to increase the number of such students studying computational science via an interactive multimedia learning environment One mechanism used for meeting this goal was the development of educational modules. This academic year program established within the mathematics department at Florida A&M University, introduced students to computational science projects using high-performance computers. Additional activities were conducted during the summer, these included workshops, meetings, and lectures. Through the exposure provided by this program to scientific ideas and research in computational science, it is likely that their successful applications of tools from this interdisciplinary field will be high.

Methane Hydrates - Methane Hydrate Graduate Fellowship

Broader source: All U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office Webpages (Extended Search)

Future Supply and Emerging Resources Future Supply and Emerging Resources The National Methane Hydrates R&D Program - Graduate Fellowship Program Methane Hydrate Graduate Fellowship Program Jeffrey James Marlow, a graduate student in Geobiology at the California Institute of Technology, was recently selected as the 2012 recipient of the NETL-National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Methane Hydrate Research Fellowship. Please see page 15 of the March 2013 issue (Vol. 13, Issue 1) of Fire in the Ice for more information on the recipient. The Department of Energy has a long history of building synergistic relationships with research universities. Funding academic research is a "win-win-win" situation. The U.S. government is able to tap into some of the best minds available for solving national energy problems, the universities get the support they need to maintain cutting edge faculty and laboratories, and the students involved are provided with opportunities that help them along their chosen path of study, strengthening the national pool of scientists and engineers. According to Samuel Bodman, speaking about graduate research in methane hydrates, "Students are the foundation of our energy future, bringing new ideas and fresh perspectives to the energy industry. What better way to assure technology innovation than to encourage students working on the development of a resource that has the potential to tip our energy balance toward clean-burning, domestic fuels."

Multidisciplinary integrative learning in undergraduate design projects

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Design is inherently multidisciplinary. Engineering design is a merger between many fields of science combined with decision-making that produces an object that satisfies predetermined constraints. These constraints could be technical, socio-political, environmental, and economic since all engineering decisions have human consequences. This article discusses innovations and blended approaches to learning and teaching that encourage life-long learning through a management strategy for design projects. The case study used is a design project that included a team of electrical, chemical, mechanical and civil engineers. Traditionally, multidisciplinary engineering design projects have common pitfalls that are exacerbated when forming groups of students from different disciplines to collaborate together on the projects. This paper accounts curriculum development activities supervising a multidisciplinary engineering design project at undergraduate level. It presents the pedagogical challenges: independent learning, task integration management tools used to guide a Generation Y design team considering the value of reflection and in which students learn to be engineers.

Environmental Topics in an Undergraduate Physics Curriculum

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The number of bachelor's degrees in physics conferred annually is predicted to decline. This decline may be abated by emphasizing the versatility of an undergraduatephysics degree. The introduction of environmental topics throughout the undergraduate curriculum is one method of illustrating this flexibility and this approach is presented. Examples of the applications of physical principles to several areas of environmental change are given. These areas are air pollution energy conversion and resources environmental radiation noise thermal pollution transportation and water pollution. Representative bibliographies are presented in each area to facilitate the introduction of these topics into the curriculum. For the most part items in the bibliography refer to environmental problems that are amenable to the laws of physics. No major changes are proposed for the standard undergraduatephysics curriculum although a course in fluid mechanics or transport phenomena would provide a valuable background for students of all interests.

Diversity in graduate nursing education: an experience in collaboration

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The recent shift in public policy away from the use of affirmative action programs in the admissions process of institutes of higher learning has motivated colleges and universities to explore alternative means for achieving their goal to increase the diversity of their student bodies. The imperative to promote diversity is particularly relevant in nursing education because there is an emphasis on preparing students to enter a profession that is committed to providing health care to all regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background. In 1997, the nursing programs at 2 Florida schoolsBethune-Cookman College (B-CC), a historic African-American college, and the University of Florida (UF), a land-grant universityinitiated a collaborative relationship with the goals of improving access to graduate education for B-CC graduates and increasing the diversity of the graduate student body at UF. A central component of the collaboration is the Gator-Cats Mentoring Program in which students are recruited through career counseling and financial planning, mentored through the application process and the program, and offered continuing support in the skills required in graduate studies. This collaboration can serve as a model for other institutions seeking effective ways of increasing the diversity of their student populations.

'I guess' to 'I get': an effective use of smart technology to transform undergraduate statistics education

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

With the prominence of mathematics, statistics is playing an increasingly important role in an undergraduate student's academic and professional careers. Numerous studies have found that a large number of students are fearful of taking statistics classes because of the subject's complexity. Several emerging technologies, including the most recent smart mobile technology, were adopted to assist students with learning. In the current study, we propose a pedagogical innovation to the standard format of statistics homework assignments, which are one of the most important components in developing a student's critical thinking abilities. We then offer a corresponding solution of effective use of smart technology to implement the new pedagogy. Analysis of the student feedback provided insights for the future research on how to use smart technology to effectively improve undergraduate statistics education.

REU Students Initial Perceptions of Scientific Ethics

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

One goal of undergraduate research particularly Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs is to help students become aware of the importance of ethical conduct in research. The Survey of Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) indicates that biology students believe they learn more about ethical conduct from their research experiences than physics students. Motivated by this we initiated a study of both biology and physics REU students at Kansas State University consisting of pre? and post?interviews regarding their understanding of ethics with results to be compared to the SURE. This paper presents the students initial perceptions (from the pre?interview) of how ethical issues impact science in general as well as their own specific work. We also discuss the differences in the interview responses of the two groups.

Engaging the community through an undergraduate biomedical physics course

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

We report on the development of an undergraduate biomedical physics course at Portland State University motivated by both student interest and the desire of the university's Physics Department to provide an interdisciplinary intermediate-level physics course. The course was developed through the community engagement of physicians clinical researchers and basic science researchers. Class meetings were a combination of regular and guest lectures hands-on exercises web-based activities class discussions and a student poster information session for patrons at a local science museum. The course inspired students to engage in research projects in biomedical physics that enhance their understanding of science and education as well as benefit the learning of future students. Furthermore this course offers an opportunity for traditionally underrepresented groups in physics courses such as women to gain additional exposure to physics.
