Heber geothermal binary demonstration project: Unavailability distributions for principal pumps

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The purpose of this study has been to review data sources relevant to the failure rate and mean time to repair for the principal pumps of the Heber geothermal project. Based upon that review the distributions of failure rates, repair times and pump unavailability were established. A total of 16 pumps are represented in this study. The method used to develop data distributions has been to first review as many sources of pump data as are currently available. This review was followed by a study of the features of the pumps specified for the Heber installation and the effects of operation and the environment on those features as they relate to anticipated failure rates and repair times. From this, determinations were made for mean failure rate and repair time values appropriate to specific Heber pumps. Range factors are then selected and used to establish the expected variability of the data. Failure rates and repair times were then combined to obtain the unavailability distribution of each type of pump.

Time-independent and time-dependent contributions to the unavailability of standby safety system components

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The unavailability of standby safety system components due to failures in nuclear power plants is considered to involve a time independent and a time dependent part. The former relates to the component`s unavailability from demand stresses due to usage, and the latter represents the component`s unavailability due to standby time stresses related to the environment. In this paper, data from the nuclear plant reliability data system (NPRDS) were used to partition the component`s unavailability into the contributions from standby time stress (i.e., due to environmental factors) and demand stress (i.e., due to usage). Analyses are presented of motor operated valves (MOVs), motor driven pumps (MDPs), and turbine driven pumps (FDPs). MOVs fail predominantly (approx. 78%) from environmental factors (standby time stress failures). MDPs fail slightly more frequently from demand stresses (approx. 63%) than standby time stresses, while TDPs fail predominantly from standby time stresses (approx. 78%). Such partitions of component unavailability have many uses in risk informed and performance based regulation relating to modifications to Technical Specification, in-service testing, precise determination of dominant accident sequences, and implementation of maintenance rules.

Gas from the top of the barrel

SciTech Connect

Refining management has recently entailed a search for that special niche in all the refinery process options that will make the overall operation profitable in the face of increasing impact of environmental regulation, decreasing demand through conservation, and variations in crude oil pricing. One such niche, bottom of the barrel processing, was attractive enough to result in major new and revamp projects which have contributed positively to direct refinery cost economics but not significantly to profitability. Today, proposed regulations reducing gasoline vapor pressure and forecasts of excess LPG supplies suggest that the other end of the barrel - the top - should be considered. Conventional uses of LPG in home heating and cooling, as petrochemical feedstocks, in gasoline blending, and, in limited amounts, as transportation fuels are well, or over, served. At the same time, recovery of LPG's from gas and refinery processing is increasing the supply. Those C/sub 3/-C/sub 4/ paraffin hydrocarbons can be converted economically to transportation fuels.

Methods for dependency estimation and system unavailability evaluation based on failure data statistics. Volume 1, Summary report

SciTech Connect

This report introduces a new perspective on the basic concept of dependent failures where the definition of dependency is based on clustering in failure times of similar components. This perspective has two significant implications: first, it relaxes the conventional assumption that dependent failures must be simultaneous and result from a severe shock; second, it allows the analyst to use all the failures in a time continuum to estimate the potential for multiple failures in a window of time (e.g., a test interval), therefore arriving at a more accurate value for system unavailability. In addition, the models developed here provide a method for plant-specific analysis of dependency, reflecting the plant-specific maintenance practices that reduce or increase the contribution of dependent failures to system unavailability. The proposed methodology can be used for screening analysis of failure data to estimate the fraction of dependent failures among the failures. In addition, the proposed method can evaluate the impact of the observed dependency on system unavailability and plant risk. The formulations derived in this report have undergone various levels of validations through computer simulation studies and pilot applications. The pilot applications of these methodologies showed that the contribution of dependent failures of diesel generators in one plant was negligible, while in another plant was quite significant. It also showed that in the plant with significant contribution of dependency to Emergency Power System (EPS) unavailability, the contribution changed with time. Similar findings were reported for the Containment Fan Cooler breakers. Drawing such conclusions about system performance would not have been possible with any other reported dependency methodologies.

Effects of core barrel on vessel seismic loadings. [LMFBR

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Reliability of reactor systems under seismic events is a major concern for the safety of the nuclear power plants. This paper deals with the effects of the core barrel on the seismic response of reactor tanks. The main emphases are the effects of core barrel on the free-surface wave height and the fluid coupling effects between the core barrel and primary tank. This study represents an initial step to investigate the effects of in-tank components, structures on the seismically-induced hydrodynamic behavior of the reactor tanks. To simplify the analysis, the tank used in the study is simulated by a two-dimensional model. Two parametric studies were carried out in which the wall flexibility and location of core barrel were used as parameters respectively.

Sodium Dichromate Barrel Landfill expedited response action proposal

SciTech Connect

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) recommended that the US Department of Energy (DOE) prepare an expedited response action (ERA) for the Sodium Dichromate Barrel Landfill. The Sodium Dichromate Barrel Disposal Site was used in 1945 for disposal of crushed barrels. The site location is the sole waste site within the 100-IU-4 Operable Unit. The Waste Information Data System (WIDS 1992) assumes that the crushed barrels contained 1% residual sodium dichromate at burial time and that only buried crushed barrels are at the site. Burial depth is shallow since visual inspection finds numerous barrel debris on the surface. A non-time-critical ERA proposal includes preparation of an engineering evaluation and cost analysis (EE/CA) section. The EE/CA is a rapid, focused evaluation of available technologies using specific screening factors to assess feasibility, appropriateness, and cost. The ERA goal is to reduce the potential for any contaminant migration from the landfill to the soil column, groundwater, and Columbia River. Since the landfill is the only waste site within the operable unit, the ERA will present a final remediation of the 100-IU-4 operable unit.

Baseballs and Barrels: World Statistics Day Baseballs and Barrels: World Statistics Day Baseballs and Barrels: World Statistics Day October 20, 2010 - 1:06pm Addthis Dr. Richard Newell Dr. Richard Newell Does the American League hold more baseball World Series titles than the National League? Yes. Does Saudi Arabia produce more crude oil than Russia? No. How do I know? Statistics. The month of October not only marks the beginning of Major League Baseball's World Series and Energy Awareness Month, but also the celebration of the first ever World Statistics Day on October 20th. Statistics don't just help us answer trivia questions - they also help us make intelligent decisions. If I heat my home with natural gas, I'm probably interested in what natural gas prices are likely to be this winter. If my business manufactures solar panels, I would want to know how

Site geotechnical considerations for expansion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to one billion barrels

SciTech Connect

Eight Gulf Coast salt domes have emerged as candidate sites for possible expansion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to one billion barrels. Two existing SPR sites, Big Hill, TX, and Weeks Island, LA, are among the eight that are being considered. To achieve the billion barrel capacity, some 25 new leached caverns would be constructed, and would probably be established in two separate sites in Louisiana and Texas because of distribution requirements. Geotechnical factors involved in siting studies have centered first and foremost on cavern integrity and environmental acceptability, once logistical suitability is realized. Other factors have involved subsidence and flooding potential, loss of coastal marshlands, seismicity, brine injection well utility, and co-use by multiple operators. 5 refs., 11 figs., 2 tabs.

South Belridge Field reaches milestone with its billionth barrel of crude oil

SciTech Connect

An 84-year-old California oil field which for at least the first two decades of its life was regarded as one of the minor fields of Kern County in May reached a plateau attained previously by only 11 fields in the United States. The South Belridge field 35 miles west of Bakersfield produced its one billionth barrel of oil, thus qualifying for membership in oil production`s most exclusive club. The other billion-barrel fields are Alaska`s Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk River; California`s Wilmington and Huntington Beach; Oklahoma`s ShoVel-Tum; and Texas` East Texas, Yates, Kelly-Snyder, Slaughter, Wasson and Panhandle. California`s Ventura field presently is believed to be the only other field in the United States with the potential to produce one billion barrels. The field, to the first of this year had produced 930.2 MMbo and had estimated reserves of 81.8 MMbo. Production in the South Belridge field last year totaled 43.8 MMbo, or an average of 120 Mbo/d, which was enough to make the field the fifth most productive in the United States.

U.S. crude oil production expected to hit four-decade high during 2015 U.S. crude oil production expected to hit four-decade high during 2015 U.S. crude oil production over the next two years is expected to grow to its highest level since the early 1970s. Oil output increased by 1 million barrels per day in 2013...and is expected to repeat that growth rate during 2014....according to the new forecast from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. U.S. crude oil production is forecast to average 8.5 million barrels per day this year and then rise to 9.3 million barrels per day in 2015. That would be the highest yearly oil output since 1972, and just 300,000 barrels per day below the all-time production high of 9.6 million barrels per day set in 1970. Most of the oil production growth will come from increased drilling in the shale formations in

OPTIMIZING CENTRIFUGAL BARREL POLISHING FOR MIRROR FINISH SRF CAVITY AND RF TESTS AT JEFFERSON LAB

SciTech Connect

We performed Centrifugal Barrel Polishing (CBP) on a 1.3 GHz fine grain TESLA single cell cavity and 1.5 GHz fine grain CEBAF high gradient superconducting radio frequency (SRF) single cell cavity following a modified recipe originally developed at Fermi National Accelerator Lab (FNAL). We were able to obtain a mirror like surface similar to that obtained at FNAL, while reducing the number of CBP steps and total processing time. This paper will discuss the change in surface and subsequent cavity performance post CBP, after a 800 C bake (no pre-bake chemistry) and minimal controlled electro-polishing (10 micron). In addition to Q vs. E{sub ACC} thermometry mapping with preheating characteristics and optical inspection of the cavity after CBP will also be shown.

Analysis of refiners' total barrel costs and revenues from the sale of petroleum products, 1976 to 1979

SciTech Connect

In this report, the Economic Regulatory Administration has evaluated refiners' costs and revenues from the sale of major petroleum products from July 1976 through December 1979. This report represents a continuing effort to assess No. 2 heating oil prices and margins in that it updates prior middle distillate studies through March 1980. The analysis examines selling prices and costs associated with each major petroleum product category and a combination of petroleum products (total barrel) from a sample of nine refiners. The total barrel approach was adopted to reduce distortions caused by varying methods of allocation of costs among regulated and unregulated products by refiners. This report determines the extent to which increased costs were recovered on controlled products and whether refiners obtained greater cost recoupment on decontrolled products than would have been allowed under continued controls. The principal methods of measurement used to evaluate product pricing levels for the nine refiners surveyed were cost recoupment (Chapter III), gross margins (Chapter IV), and net margins (Chapter V). Gross margins were derived by subtracting average crude oil costs from average product selling prices for individual product categories and the total barrel. Net margins were derived by subtracting average crude oil costs as well as average marketing, manufacturing, and purchased product costs from average selling prices for individual product categories and the total barrel.

Apparatus and method for performing corrections for matrix material effects on the neutron measurements generated from analysis of transuranic waste drums using the differential-dieaway technique. By measuring the absorption index and the moderator index for a particular drum, correction factors can be determined for the effects of matrix materials on the ''observed'' quantity of fissile and fertile material present therein in order to determine the actual assays thereof. A barrel flux monitor is introduced into the measurement chamber to accomplish these measurements as a new contribution to the differential-dieaway technology. 9 figs.

NEW GUN CAPABILITY WITH INTERCHANGABLE BARRELS TO INVESTIGATE LOW VELOCITY IMPACT REGIMES AT THE LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY HIGH EXPLOSIVES APPLICATIONS FACILITY

SciTech Connect

A new gas gun capability is being activated at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories located in the High Explosives Applications Facility (HEAF). The single stage light gas (dry air, nitrogen, or helium) gun has interchangeable barrels ranging from 25.4 mm to 76.2 mm in diameter with 1.8 meters in length and is being fabricated by Physics Applications, Inc. Because it is being used for safety studies involving explosives, the gun is planned for operation inside a large enclosed firing tank, with typical velocities planned in the range of 10-300 m/s. Three applications planned for this gun include: low velocity impact of detonator or detonator/booster assemblies with various projectile shapes, the Steven Impact test that involves impact initiation of a cased explosive target, and the Taylor impact test using a cylindrical explosive sample impacted onto a rigid anvil for fracture studies of energetic materials. A highlight of the gun features, outline on work in progress for implementing this capability, and discussion of the planned areas of research will be included.

Could propane from Alaskas North Slope reduce energy costs for electric utilities and residential space heating, water heating, and cooking demands? We explored the hypothesis that propane is a viable alternative for fourteen selected communities along the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers, coastal Alaska, and Fairbanks. Our analysis forecasts propane and fuel prices at the wholesale and retail levels by incorporating current transportation margins with recent analysis on Alaska fuel price projections. Annual savings to households associated with converting to propane from fuel oil can be up to $1,700 at $60 per barrel (bbl) of crude oil, and amount to $5,300 at $140 per barrel. 1 Fairbanks residents would benefit from switching to propane for all applications at crude oil prices of $60/bbl. Interesting to note is that switching to propane for domestic water heating makes more sense at lower oil prices than conversions for home space heating. Three of the fourteen communities are projected to benefit from switching to propane for home heating at crude oil prices greater than $80 per barrel, and four communities at crude oil prices of more than $110/bbl. On the other hand, nine communities would benefit from conversion to propane for water heating as crude oil

Oil export policy and economic development in OPEC

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

During the 1970s, members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) increased the price of their oil exports by 2000% in nominal terms. The ability of OPEC countries to increase the economic and other benefits they drew from each barrel of oil was a familiar theme of that decade. However, recent developments in the world oil market may not be so encouraging for OPEC. From 1979 to 1983, demand for OPEC crude oil decreased by almost 45%, or from 30.9 to 17.5 million barrels per day (mbd). Despite this dramatic decrease, the news on the price front has not so far been that bad for OPEC. The average OPEC oil price, which had increased from $1.80/bbl (barrel) in 1970 to $36/bbl by 1980, declined to $29/bbl by 1983. OPEC has thus defied many experts by managing to avoid a price collapse. Not surprisingly, these developments have raised arguments about the nature of OPEC and how it operates. OPEC has been characterized variously as a very tight cartel and as a loose and ineffectual organization. This paper tries to shed some light on OPEC, and especially on how the economic development objectives of influential OPEC members affect their oil policies.

Likewise, some types of offshore drilling wastes cannot be discharged, so they are either injected underground at the platform (not yet common in the United States) or are hauled back to shore for disposal. According to an American Petroleum Institute waste survey, the exploration and production segment of the U.S. oil and gas industry generated more than 360 million barrels (bbl) of drilling wastes in 1985. The report estimates that 28% of drilling wastes are sent to offsite commercial facilities for disposal (Wakim 1987). Extrusion of electrode material by liquid injection into extruder barrel

DOE Patents (OSTI)

An electrode sheet product is formed using an extruder having a feed throat and a downstream section by separately mixing an active electrode material and a solid polymer electrolyte composition that contains lithium salt. The active electrode material is fed into the feed throat of the extruder, while a portion of at least one fluid component of the solid polymer electrolyte composition is introduced to the downstream section. The active electrode material and the solid polymer electrolyte composition are compounded in a downstream end of the extruder. The extruded sheets, adhered to current collectors, can be formed into battery cells. 1 fig.

Extrusion of electrode material by liquid injection into extruder barrel

SciTech Connect

An electrode sheet product is formed using an extruder having a feed throat and a downstream section by separately mixing an active electrode material and a solid polymer electrolyte composition that contains lithium salt. The active electrode material is fed into the feed throat of the extruder, while a portion of at least one fluid component of the solid polymer electrolyte composition is introduced to the downstream section. The active electrode material and the solid polymer electrolyte composition are compounded in a downstream end of the extruder. The extruded sheets, adhered to current collectors, can be formed into battery cells.

Oil gas J report. Mexico. [Mexico

SciTech Connect

Mexico's oil industry continues its rise, but it has not yet been able to ignite sluggish sectors of the economy nor bring national prosperity. Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) has accomplished about everything an oil company can do. Total claimed proved reserves of oil, gas liquids, and gas (oil equivalent) climbed 12 billion bbl to 72,000 billion bbl in 1981. They could hit 80 billion bbl by year-end 1982. Production (oil, gas, and gas liquids) rose by half a million barrels per day to 3,125,000 bpd. With the proper market and mandate, PEMEX could top that in 1982. Exports grew 300,000 bpd in 1981, but may be flat in 1982, though not due to a lack of capacity to export. PEMEX lost its authority to set sales volumes after the first big discoveries. It has also lost its ability to negotiate prices. This report indicates the impact of economic factors on drilling and production. New finds and production statistics on existing fields are highlighted. Technologic progress also is documented.

Crown Zellerbach Well No. 2, Livingston Parish, Louisiana. Volume I. Completion and testing. Final report

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The Crown Zellerbach Well No. 2, approximately 23 miles east of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is the eighth successful test of a geopressured-geothermal aquifer under the DOE Wells of Opportunity program. The well was tested through the annulus between 7-inch casing and 2-3/8 inch tubing. Two flow tests and one reservoir pressure buildup test were conducted on the lower zone during a 13-day period. A total of 12,489 barrels of water was produced. The highest flow rate achieved was about 3887 BWPD. One flow test followed by a buildup period was conducted on the combined upper and lower zones during a 3-day period. A total of 4739 barrels of water was produced. The highest flow rate achieved was about 3000 BWPD. The gas/water ratio measured during testing was about 32.0 SCF/BBL for the lower zone. The extrapolated latoratory data indicates that the solubility of the gas is 55.7 SCF/BBL. It appears that the reservoir brine is considerably undersaturated. The methane content of the flare line gas averaged 71.0 mole percent. Crown Zellerbach Company carefully studied the commercial feasibility of using the well to produce energy for a wood-drying facility and decided against the project.

Natural gas content of geopressured aquifers

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

It is hypothesized that free, but immobile, natural gas is trapped in pores in geopressured aquifers and that this gas becomes mobile as aquifer pressure is reduced by water production. Computer simulation reveals this hypothesis is a plausible explanation for the high gas/water ratio observed from the No. 1 sand in the Edna Delcambre No. 1 well. In this Delcambre well test, the gas/water ratio increased from the solution gas value of less than 20 SCF/bbl to more than 50 SCF/bbl during production of 32,000 barrels of water in 10 days. Bottom hole pressure was reduced from 10,846 to 9,905 psia. The computer simulation reveals that such increased gas production requires relative permeability to gas(k{sub rg}) increase from less than 10{sup -4} to about 10{sup -3} due to a decrease in fractional water saturation of pores (S{sub w}) of only about 0.001. Further, assuming drainage relative permeabilities are as calculated by the method of A.T. Corey{sup 1}, initial gas saturation of pores must be greater than 0.065. Means for achieving these initial conditions during geological time will be qualitatively discussed, and the effect of trapped gas upon long-term production will be described.

Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update (EIA)

5 5 1 November 2005 Short-Term Energy Outlook November 8, 2005 Release Overview Hurricanes Katrina and Rita damaged, set adrift, or sunk 192 oil and natural gas drilling rigs and producing platforms, the most significant blow to the U.S. petroleum and natural gas industries in recent memory. At the beginning of November almost 53 percent of normal daily Federal Gulf of Mexico oil production and 47 percent of Federal Gulf of Mexico natural gas production remains shut in. Moreover, in Louisiana 1.0 billion cubic feet (bcf) per day of onshore natural gas production remains offline and 0.8 million barrels per day (bbl/d) of crude oil refining capacity remains shut down. Some wells were temporarily shut in as a precaution to Hurricane Wilma. While no damage was reported from that storm,

A case study: Residue reduction at Deer Park Refining Limited Partnership

SciTech Connect

With input from Shell Synthetic Fuels Inc. (SSFI), Deer Park Refining Limited Partnership (DPRLP) analyzed options for managing the bottom of the barrel to extinction, with an objective of high return on investment. DPRLP is a joint venture of PEMEX and Shell Oil Company. This Gulf Coast refiner processes 227M BBL/D of heavy, high sulfur crude. This paper discusses the process options considered, their advantages and disadvantages, and the option selected as well as the options still open. Recent modernization projects at DPRLP are now on stream with high yield of clean products. There remains one by-product, petroleum coke, which presents opportunity as a low cost feed for one or more process options yielding attractive products. The Shell Coke (or Coal) Gasification Process is one of the options now being considered.

Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update (EIA)

6 6 1 May 2006 Short-Term Energy Outlook May 9, 2006 Release Overview Crude oil prices surged in April and have now almost doubled over the last 2 years. While rising crude oil prices have slowed world petroleum demand growth, world consumption nevertheless rose by 3.8 million barrels per day (bbl/d) over this period. In 2004 production in both Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non-OPEC countries increased to meet growing demand. In 2005 all of the increase in world production came from OPEC members, as Hurricanes Rita and Katrina pummeled U.S. production, which offset the production growth in other non-OPEC countries. World surplus crude oil production capacity, located

Radiation Hardness Tests of SiPMs for the JLab Hall D Barrel Calorimeter

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We report on the measurement of the neutron radiation hardness of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) manufactured by Hamamatsu Corporation in Japan and SensL in Ireland. Samples from both companies were irradiated by neutrons created by a 1 GeV electron beam hitting a thin lead target at Jefferson Lab Hall A. More tests regarding the temperature dependence of the neutron radiation damage and self-annealing were performed on Hamamatsu SiPMs using a calibrated Am-Be neutron source from the Jefferson Lab Radiation Control group. As the result of irradiation both dark current and dark rate increase linearly as a function of the 1 MeV equivalent neutron fluence and a temperature dependent self-annealing effect is observed.

Three-Dimensionality in Quasi-Two Dimensional Flows: the Barrel Effects

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A scenario is put forward for the appearance of three-dimensionality both in quasi-2D rotating flows and quasi-2D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. We distinguish two forms of threedimensionalities, establish how both are ignited by the presence of walls, and how they relate to each other. One form involves velocities or currents along the rotation direction or the magnetic field, while the other leads to quadratic variations of these quantities along this direction. It is shown that the common tendency of these flows to two-dimensionality and the mechanisms of the first form of three-dimensionality can be explained through a single formal analogy between rotating flows, MHD flows and a wider class of flows, whereas the second form involves a distinct mechanism. Because of this trans-disciplinary character, these phenomena are active in such diverse flows as those in atmospheres, oceans and the cooling blankets of nuclear fusion reactors.

Continuous Cyclone Barrel Flame Temperature Measurement Using Ultraviolet-Visible Emission Spectroscopy

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Cyclone boilers represent more than 10 of the coal-fired boiler capacity in the United States and exhibit low electricity generation costs. Production of cyclone boilers, however, ended in the 1970s due to the Clean Air Act and the difficulty of cost-effectively meeting NOx emission requirements under New Source Review standards. By burning coal at high turbulence and temperature in cyclone boilers, coal ash is removed as molten slag, reducing the fly ash content of the flue gas. The high heat release ra...

Bodcau In Situ Combustion Project. Final report, June 1976-June 1982

SciTech Connect

The primary objective of the Bodcau In Situ Combustion Project was to demonstrate the operations and economics of a commercial scale in situ combustion project utilizing simultaneous air and water injection. This report includes pre-contract work, field facilities, injection and production performance, remedial work, monitoring, research support, a performance evaluation, and economics covering the contract life. The project was conducted on five patterns of Cities Service Company's Bodcau Fee B Lease. The five patterns were part of an eight-pattern expansion of Cities' combustion operations in the field. Thirty-eight producers, five injectors, and five observation wells were included in the patterns. Injection for the combustion phase (August 1976 through April 1981) was 10.1 BCF of air and 2.64 MM BBL of water. Cumulative water injection over project life was 5.15MM barrels. The combustion phase resulted in recovery of 626 M barrels of 19/sup 0/ API crude. Cumulative oil production amounted to 685 M barrels or 35% of the oil in place. Total expenditures for the project through June 30, 1982, were $10,450,790. Development costs for wells and equipment were $1,710,779.36; production and research services have amounted to $1,075,311; and lease operations and maintenance were $4,382,228. Decontrol tax amounted to $1,300,784. Total cost per barrel of oil produced was $17.37 based on net production assuming one-eighth royalty. Net income based on net production was 26.7% of the revenue. Based on the data taken during the six year contract life, the Bodcau In Situ Combustion Project has proven to be both an economical and technical success.

Economics and analysis of the miscible CO/sub 2/ injection project, Granny's Creek field, West Virginia

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The use of carbon dioxide (CO/sub 2/) in a tertiary oil recovery pilot in the Granny's Creek field, West Virginia, was started in 1976. At first the CO/sub 2/ was injected into the Pocono Big Injun sand at four wells at the corners of an approximately square area of 6.7 acres. The CO/sub 2/ was injected as a liquid, and the pilot portion of the reservoir was maintained at or above miscible pressure. Production was taken from a well inside the square pilot area and from eight wells outside the area. The test began with injection of water to increase reservoir pressure to more than the miscibility pressure. Injection started with CO/sub 2/ alone, then alternate slugs of CO/sub 2/ and water, then CO/sub 2/, alone, and finally water alone was injected. The additional oil recovery was 8,681 bbl for an injection total of 19.76 million lb of CO/sub 2/ for a ratio of 19,626 cu ft per bbl. A second or minipilot in which the injection was in the lower or C zone of the Big Injun sand resulted in 2,007.9 bbl of additional oil through September 1980 from the injection of 4.24 million lb of CO/sub 2/ for a ratio of 18,192 cu ft per bbl. The CO/sub 2/ spread quickly across the southern 350 acres of the field and confinement was not attained. The sales price of the oil after royalty and taxes is probably about equal to the most optimistic cost of the CO/sub 2/ per barrel of additional oil at the present time and far less than a more reasonable cost for the CO/sub 2/. Production of additional oil in each case decreased sharply after injection of CO/sub 2/ was stopped so there appeared to be no benefits over an extended period of time from the injection of CO/sub 2/.

Prairie Canal Well No. 1, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. Volume 1. Completion and testing. Final report

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The Prairie Canal Company, Inc. Well No. 1, approximately 8 miles south of the city of Lake Charles, Louisiana, was tested through the annulus between 5-1/2 inch casing and 2-3/8 inch tubing. The interval tested was from 14,782 to 14,820 feet. The geological section was the Hackberry Sand, a member of the Oligocene Frio formation. Produced water was injected into a disposal well which was perforated in several Miocene Sands from 3070 to 4600 feet. Original plans were to test a section of the Hackberry sand from 14,976 to 15,024 feet. This primary zone, however, produced a large amount of sand, shale, gravel, and rocks during early flow periods and was abandoned in favor of the secondary zone. Four pressure drawdown flow tests and three pressure buildup tests were conducted during a 12-day period. A total of 36,505 barrels of water was produced. The highest sustained flow rate was approximately 7100 BWPD. The gas-to-water ratio, measured during testing, ranged from 41 to 50 SCF/BBL. There is disagreement as to the saturation value of the reservoir brine, which may be between 43.3 and 49.7 SCF/BBL. The methane content of the flare line gas averaged 88.4 mole percent. The CO/sub 2/ content averaged 8.4 mole percent. Measured values of H/sub 2/S in the gas were between 12 and 24 ppM.

Gas and Oil in Utah: Potential, New Discoveries, and Hot Plays Gas and Oil in Utah: Potential, New Discoveries, and Hot Plays Gas and Oil in Utah: Potential, New Discoveries, and Hot Plays Author: Thomas C. Chidsey, Petroleum Section Chief, Utah Geological Survey, Salt Lake City, UT. Venue: International Oil Scouts Association’s 84th annual meeting, Stein Eriksen Lodge, Park City, UT, June 17–20, 2007, (http://www.oilscouts.com/index-main.html [external site]). Abstract: Utah’s natural gas and oil exploration history extends back more than 100 years, fluctuating greatly due to discoveries, price trends, and changing exploration targets. During the boom period of the early 1980s, activity peaked at over 500 wells per year. After slowing in the 1990s, drilling activity has again increased, reaching an all-time peak of 1,058 wells spudded and over 2,000 APDs (application for permit to drill) filed in 2006. This increase in activity has been spurred by high prices for both natural gas and oil and by the perception that Utah is highly prospective and underexplored. In recent years, the proportion of new wells exploring for gas has increased greatly. Total cumulative natural gas production from Utah fields now exceeds 8 Tcf. Recent successful drilling has been expanding reserves by about 10 percent per year, one of the highest rates of gas reserves increase in the country. Although gas production from some fields declined during the late 1990s, two factors caused overall gas production to increase. The development of coalbed natural gas (CBNG) accumulations in the Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone play, in particular Drunkards Wash field in central Utah, has increased the State’s annual gas production by 20–30 percent. Also, deeper exploratory and development drilling in the eastern and southern Uinta Basin during the past 5 years has led to discoveries of substantial gas accumulations in tight-sand reservoirs of the Tertiary Wasatch Formation, Cretaceous Mesaverde Group, and Jurassic Entrada and Wingate Sandstones. Significant potential exists for other coalfields (Book Cliffs, Sego, and Wasatch Plateau) around the Uinta Basin to yield CBNG, and the extent of deeper conventional and tight-gas plays remains to be explored. In addition, shale gas reservoirs in the Mississippian Manning Canyon Shale, Pennsylvanian Hermosa Group, and Cretaceous Mancos Shale of central, southeastern, and northeastern Utah, respectively, have tremendous untapped potential. Utah oilfields have produced a cumulative total of 1.3 billion barrels (bbl) of oil. Although annual production decreased from a peak of 41 million bbl in 1985 to 13 million bbl in 2003, the trend has since reversed, and 2005 production reached nearly 17 million bbl. A component (about one-third of the increase) of this turnaround has been the 2004 discovery of Covenant field in the central Utah thrust belt, or "Hingeline." This new field has already produced 3 million bbl of Mississippian-sourced oil from the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone in a thrusted anticline formed during the Sevier orogeny. This new oil play is the focus of extensive leasing and exploration activity—comparable to the late 1970s and early 1980s in the Utah-Wyoming salient of the thrust belt to the north.

Options and costs for offsite disposal of oil and gas exploration and production wastes.

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

In the United States, most of the exploration and production (E&P) wastes generated at onshore oil and gas wells are disposed of or otherwise managed at the well site. Certain types of wastes are not suitable for onsite management, and some well locations in sensitive environments cannot be used for onsite management. In these situations, operators must transport the wastes offsite for disposal. In 1997, Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) prepared a report that identified offsite commercial disposal facilities in the United States. This information has since become outdated. Over the past year, Argonne has updated the study through contacts with state oil and gas agencies and commercial disposal companies. The new report, including an extensive database for more than 200 disposal facilities, provides an excellent reference for information about commercial disposal operations. This paper describes Argonne's report. The national study provides summaries of the types of offsite commercial disposal facilities found in each state. Data are presented by waste type and by disposal method. The categories of E&P wastes in the database include: contaminated soils, naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), oil-based muds and cuttings, produced water, tank bottoms, and water-based muds and cuttings. The different waste management or disposal methods in the database involve: bioremediation, burial, salt cavern, discharge, evaporation, injection, land application, recycling, thermal treatment, and treatment. The database includes disposal costs for each facility. In the United States, most of the 18 billion barrels (bbl) of produced water, 149 million bbl of drilling wastes, and 21 million bbl of associated wastes generated at onshore oil and gas wells are disposed of or otherwise managed at the well site. However, under certain conditions, operators will seek offsite management options for these E&P wastes. Commercial disposal facilities are offsite businesses that accept and manage E&P wastes for a fee. Their services include waste management and disposal, transportation, cleaning of vehicles and tanks, disposal of wash water, and, in some cases, laboratory analysis. Commercial disposal facilities offer a suite of waste management methods and technologies.

Technology assessment: environmental, health, and safety impacts associated with oil recovery from US tar-sand deposits

SciTech Connect

The tar-sand resources of the US have the potential to yield as much as 36 billion barrels (bbls) of oil. The tar-sand petroleum-extraction technologies now being considered for commercialization in the United States include both surface (above ground) systems and in situ (underground) procedures. The surface systems currently receiving the most attention include: (1) thermal decomposition processes (retorting); (2) suspension methods (solvent extraction); and (3) washing techniques (water separation). Underground bitumen extraction techniques now being field tested are: (1) in situ combustion; and (2) in situ steam-injection procedures. At this time, any commercial tar-sand facility in the US will have to comply with at least 7 major federal regulations in addition to state regulations; building, electrical, and fire codes; and petroleum-industry construction standards. Pollution-control methods needed by tar-sand technologies to comply with regulatory standards and to protect air, land, and water quality will probably be similar to those already proposed for commercial oil-shale systems. The costs of these systems could range from about $1.20 to $2.45 per barrel of oil produced. Estimates of potential pollution-emisson levels affecting land, air, and water were calculated from available data related to current surface and in situ tar-sand field experiments in the US. These data were then extrapolated to determine pollutant levels expected from conceptual commercial surface and in situ facilities producing 20,000 bbl/d. The likelihood-of-occurrence of these impacts was then assessed. Experience from other industries, including information concerning health and ecosystem damage from air pollutants, measurements of ground-water transport of organic pollutants, and the effectiveness of environmental-control technologies was used to make this assessment.

Recovery of bypassed oil in the Dundee Formation using horizontal drains. Quarterly report, October 1 - December 31, 1996

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The principal objective of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility and economic success of producing oil from abandoned or nearly abandoned fields in the Dundee Formation of Central Michigan using horizontal drilling technology. A site for a horizontal well was selected in Crystal Field, a nearly-abandoned Dundee oil field in Michigan. This field had produced over 8 million barrels of oil, mostly in the 1930`s and 1940`s. At the height of development, Crystal Field produced from 193 wells, but by 1995, only seven producing wells remained, each producing less than 10 bbls/day. A horizontal well was drilled as a field demonstration pilot, funded through this DOE project, and was successful. It has produced over 37,000 bbls of oil as of December 31, 1996 at sustained rate of {approximately}100 bbls/day. At a nominal wellhead price of $20/bbl, this well has made about $750,000 and is still going strong. Two additional horizontal wells have just been completed and are on test. Core and logs from the Dundee interval were recovered from a vertical borehole at the same surface location. The horizontal well was brought on production at a rate of 100 bbls/day and is probably capable of producing at a higher rate. The addition of several horizontal wells, similar to the demonstration well, will likely add another 2 million bbls (or more) to the cumulative production of the field over the next few years. The presence of untapped oil in this Dundee field was dramatically demonstrated and the favorable economics were made clearly evident. If other abandoned Dundee fields are re-developed in a similar manner, the additional oil produced could exceed 80 million barrels. Horizontal drilling will likely revolutionize the development of old carbonate fields such as those in the Dundee of Michigan.

US offshore report: California ripe for active year

SciTech Connect

Major projects are planned for California's offshore operators, especially in the Santa Maria Basin, where wildcatters have discovered at least 5 fields, including one that may turn out to be the biggest domestic field since the billion-barrel Kuparuk River field was tapped off Alaska's North Slope in 1969. Also, further development planned for the Santa Ynez Unit in the Santa Barbara Channel could yield a new water depth record for the placement of a platform. With further exploration and future lease sales indicating moves into deeper water, there is a continuing effort to develop the technology to meet the unique requirements west coast operators are certain to encounter. The spotlight in the Santa Maria Basin is on the Point Arguello field, where current estimates of recoverable reserves range from 100 million to 500 million bbl. The field, located 50 miles west of Santa Barbara, is thought to extend over a 5-mile, northwest-southwest trend. It is still too early to draw conclusions, but some geologists believe the boundaries will eventually extend for a distance of 10 miles along the trend and prove to be ca 3 miles wide.

Application of the LO-CAT Hydrogen Sulfied Oxidation Process to geokinetics in-situ oil shale retorting

SciTech Connect

A commercially feasible process for in-situ retorting of shale to produce shale oil and fuel gas is described. The LOFRECO process has been under development since 1975 and is currently producing approximately 40,000 barrels of shale oil per retort. The present operation in Southeastern Utah involves two 300 x 300 ft. areas, each containing a 30 foot thickness of oil shale at a depth of 100 feet, and producing approximately 400 BBL/day. The by-product gas produced by the retorting process is burned in an incineration unit. The gas composition varies during the burn period which lasts as long as one year. In order to meet the State of Utah requirements limiting sulfur dioxide emission, Geokinetics elected to install a LO-CAT Hydrogen Sulfide Oxidation process. The LO-CAT process has successfully met the State requirements and has demonstrated substantial advantages over the Stretford process tested on a limited scale. The LO-CAT process is described in detail and the operating experience of the commercial LO-CAT unit with the Stretford results is compared.

Geopressured-geothermal test of the EDNA Delcambre No. 1 well, Tigre Lagoon Field, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana: analysis of water an dissolved natural gas. Final report

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The Edna Delcambre et al. No. 1 gas well, shut-in since June 1975, was made available for the project. Two geopressured sand-bed aquifers were tested: sand No. 3 at a depth of 12,900 feet and sand No. 1 at a depth of 12,600 feet. Each aquifer was subjected to flow tests which lasted approximately three weeks in each case. Water samples were obtained during flow testing of the two geopressured aquifers. The water contained 11.3 to 13.3% dissolved solids. Several radioactive species were measured. Radium-226 was found to be approximately 10 times more concentrated than the average amount observed in surface waters. No appreciable amount of heavy metals was detected. Recombination studies at bottom-hole conditions indicate the solubility of natural gas per barrel of water to be about 24 SCF. The methane content was 93 to 95%, and the gas had a heating value in the range of 1020 to 1070 Btu/cu.ft. During the flow tests, the gas/water ratio at the well-head was observed to be 45 to 88 SCF/Bbl water produced. (MHR)

A Biennially Renewable Fuel Resource: Woodchips

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Recent genetic improvements with some tree species has given us hybrids that have disease resistance, rapid growth, and the ability to regenerate from the stump after harvest. Grown intensively these hybrids are capable of producing and storing a usable 250 mBTU per acre per year on a biennial harvest of the total tree. Employing the best of today's silvicultural techniques and boiler equipment each tree can produce a little more than one boiler horsepower per year. Utilizing non-prime lands for the production of 'hybrid poplars' one acre can generate the wood fuel equivalent of 40 barrels of oil ($8/bbl) or 2500 therms of natural gas ($0.13/therm) per year and can be harvested every other year. Beyond the economic and environmental benefits there are additional merits to be realized by growing your own woodfuel. Like money in the bank, fuel may be withdrawn from the forest bank 'as needed' while the reserves accrue growth. The nutrient rich ash 'remains' can be utilized to sustain the yield of an energy plantation. Unlike other alternative sources of energy that are capital intensive, 'growing your own woodfuel' is labor intensive. You can also receive significant forestry tax incentives; and, above all, you can avoid any fuel 'cartel'.

Alaska coal gasification feasibility studies - Healy coal-to-liquids plant

SciTech Connect

The Alaska Coal Gasification Feasibility Study entailed a two-phase analysis of the prospects for greater use of Alaska's abundant coal resources in industrial applications. Phase 1, Beluga Coal Gasification Feasibility Study (Report DOE/NETL 2006/1248) assessed the feasibility of using gasification technology to convert the Agrium fertilizer plant in Nikiski, Alaska, from natural gas to coal feedstock. The Phase 1 analysis evaluated coals from the Beluga field near Anchorage and from the Usibelli Coal Mine near Healy, both of which are low in sulfur and high in moisture. This study expands the results of Phase 1 by evaluating a similar sized gasification facility at the Usibelli Coal mine to supply Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) liquids to central Alaska. The plant considered in this study is small (14,640 barrels per day, bbl/d) compared to the recommended commercial size of 50,000 bbl/d for coal-to-liquid plants. The coal supply requirements for the Phase 1 analysis, four million tons per year, were assumed for the Phase 2 analysis to match the probable capacity of the Usibelli mining operations. Alaska refineries are of sufficient size to use all of the product, eliminating the need for F-T exports out of the state. The plant could produce marketable by-products such as sulfur as well as electric power. Slag would be used as backfill at the mine site and CO{sub 2} could be vented, captured or used for enhanced coalbed methane recovery. The unexpected curtailment of oil production from Prudhoe Bay in August 2006 highlighted the dependency of Alaskan refineries (with the exception of the Tesoro facility in Nikiski) on Alaska North Slope (ANS) crude. If the flow of oil from the North Slope declines, these refineries may not be able to meet the in-state needs for diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel. Additional reliable sources of essential fuel products would be beneficial. 36 refs., 14 figs., 29 tabs., 3 apps.

Review and analysis of oil shale technologies. Volume II. True in situ technology

SciTech Connect

This volume is a technical review and economic analysis of current true in-situ shale technology. Three techniques involving different fracturing methods are compared. Key variables include air compression, drilling depth, drill hole diameter and pattern geometry, shale grade, shale bed thickness, and explosives requirements. Variables, process systems, and process steps defined for each fracturing technique are scaled up to a 64,000-bbl/day facility and costed to provide a basis for evaluating relative economic feasibility. Capital investment, capital depreciation, annual operating, and crude shale oil costs are estimated and compared. The economic evaluation reveals that the choice of fracturing technique does not have any significant effect on the crude oil shale prices estimated for the scaled-up facilities. The costs per barrel vary only about 10%, with the lowest being the facility using the wellbore springing-explosive technique at $19 and the highest being the facility using the underreaming-explosive technique at $21. From a technical standpoint, the combination of hydraulic fracturing and explosive rubblization has the best potential for improvement. A major finding in this evaluation is that high costs associated with compression of the injection gas and drilling strongly influence process economics and, subsequently, crude oil selling prices for all techniques. The actual amount of oil recovered or extracted from the shale is also a major economic factor. The study concludes that the logistics of a commercial operation and the inability to create adequate permeability and surface area by any of the three fracturing techniques evaluated appear to be limiting factors, and that current technology has little potential for technical or economic success. 25 tables, 17 figures.

Geology and potential uses of the geopressure resources of the Gulf Coast. [6,000 MW-centuries of recoverable electric energy, 200 Tcf of methane

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The US ERDA has supported efforts to evaluate the potential contribution to the national energy supply of geopressured geothermal resources in the Gulf Coast. Efforts include a program of resource assessment and programs to examine utilization of the resource for the production of electricity and as a source of industrial-process heat. Work on resource assessment has suggested the presence of perhaps as much as 6,000 MW-centuries of recoverable electric energy and of 200 Tcf of methane. This program has emphasized finding significantly large sand bodies within the geopressured stratigraphic section in addition to defining the distribution of abnormal fluid pressures and formation temperatures. Regional sand facies analyses conducted thus far indicate five locations in the Frio formation of Central and South Texas where adequately large geopressured geothermal resources may be present. Engineering studies of energy-conversion systems based on total-flow, flashed-steam, and binary-cycle concepts show that development of electric power from the Gulf Coast geopressure resource is technically feasible. Study of use of the resource as process heat in pulp and paper mills and new sugar refineries has shown that these uses also are technically sound. The thermal content of a barrel of geothermal brine can cost as little as 9 mills when credited for recoverable hydraulic energy and methane. The value of heat approaches 50 mills per bbl for certain applications. All programs have pointed out clearly the need for better specific understanding of the resource, especially its dissolved methane content and its ability to produce for tens of years.
