Merz, K.L. (Anco Engineers, Inc., Culver City, CA (United States))

    1991-08-01T23:59:59.000Z

This report updates the results of a program with the overall objective of demonstrating the generic seismic adequacy of as much nuclear power plant equipment as possible by means of collecting and evaluating existing seismic qualification test data. These data are then used to construct ruggedness'' spectra below which equipment in operating plants designed to earlier earthquake criteria would be generically adequate. This document is an EPRI Tier 1 Report. The report gives the methodology for the collection and evaluation of data which are used to construct a Generic Equipment Ruggedness Spectrum (GERs) for each equipment class considered. The GERS for each equipment class are included in an EPRI Tier 2 Report with the same title. Associated with each GERS are inclusion rules, cautions, and checklists for field screening of in-place equipment for GERS applicability. A GERS provides a measure of equipment seismic resistance based on available test data. As such, a GERS may also be used to judge the seismic adequacy of similar new or replacement equipment or to estimate the seismic margin of equipment re-evaluated with respect to earthquake levels greater than considered to date, resulting in fifteen finalized GERS. GERS for relays (included in the original version of this report) are now covered in a separate report (NP-7147). In addition to the presentation of GERS, the Tier 2 report addresses the applicability of GERS to equipment of older vintage, methods for estimating amplification factors for evaluating devices installed in cabinets and enclosures, and how seismic test data from related studies relate to the GERS approach. 28 refs., 5 figs., 4 tabs.

  9. Fission-product-decay characteristics. Master's thesis

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Millage, K.K.

    1989-03-01T23:59:59.000Z

This theses determined fission-product decay characteristics , including the total activity, the gamma-ray emission rate (GER) and gamma-ray energy spectra. The activity and GER decay were compared to Way and Wigner's t(exp(-1.2)) approximation, and the effects the spectra, activity, and GER have on the Source Normalization Constant (K) were examined. Most of the fission-product data were obtained from DKPOWR, and were compared with data obtained from ORIGIN2. Since the gamma rays are of primary concern in fallout studies, the GER is used instead of activity. The ratio of GER to activity changes significantly with time. Results of this study calculate a GER of 590 x 10/sup 16/ gamma rays/second per kT of fission yield from U-235 fuel and a K of 7059 R/Hr/(kT/sq.km.). The calculation of K includes the contribution from scattered photons. The GER result is 11% higher than reference values, while the K is within 2% of the current value in Glasstone and Dolan's The Effects of Nuclear Weapons. The Ks for Pu-239 and U-238 were within 5% of the U-235 results. The wax-wigners t(exp(-1.2)) approximation differs from time dependent GER and K up to 85% for times less than 6 months. The approximation is not valid for the GER or K at times greater than 6 months. The approximation is within about 45%, for the activity from fission-product decay to at least 5 years. A more accurate measure of exposure requires a numerical integration of the time dependent GER and Source Normalization Constant.

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the Generalized Einstein Relation (GER), a particular form of a fluctuation-dissipation relation, in an out-of-equilibrium visco-elastic fluid. Micrometer beads, used as thermometers, are immersed in an aging colloidal glass to provide both fluctuation and dissipation measurements. The deviations from the Generalized Einstein Relation are derived as a function of frequency and aging time. The observed deviations from GER are interpreted as directly related to the change in the glass relaxation times with aging time. In our scenario, deviations are observed in the regime where the observation time scale is of the order of a characteristic relaxation time of the glass.

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    Peter W. Evans

    2015-06-30T23:59:59.000Z

Wood and Spekkens (2015) argue that any causal model explaining the EPRB correlations and satisfying no-signalling must also violate the assumption that the model faithfully reproduces the statistical dependences and independences---a so-called "fine-tuning" of the causal parameters; this includes, in particular, retrocausal explanations of the EPRB correlations. I consider this analysis with a view to enumerating the possible responses an advocate of retrocausal explanations might propose. I focus on the response of N\\"{a}ger (2015), who argues that the central ideas of causal explanations can be saved if one accepts the possibility of a stable fine-tuning of the causal parameters. I argue that, in light of this view, a violation of faithfulness does not necessarily rule out retrocausal explanations of the EPRB correlations, although it certainly constrains such explanations. I conclude by considering some possible consequences of this type of response for retrocausal explanations.
