Asymmetric twins in rhombohedral boron carbide

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Superhard materials consisting of light elements have recently received considerable attention because of their ultrahigh specific strength for a wide range of applications as structural and functional materials. However, the failure mechanisms of these materials subjected to high stresses and dynamic loading remain to be poorly known. We report asymmetric twins in a complex compound, boron carbide (B{sub 4}C), characterized by spherical-aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. The atomic structure of boron-rich icosahedra at rhombohedral vertices and cross-linked carbon-rich atomic chains can be clearly visualized, which reveals unusual asymmetric twins with detectable strains along the twin interfaces. This study offers atomic insights into the structure of twins in a complex material and has important implications in understanding the planar defect-related failure of superhard materials under high stresses and shock loading.

Deformation twinning mechanisms in FCC and HCP metals

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We report the recent work on twinning and detwinning in fcc and hcp metals based on the in situ and ex situ TEM observations and molecular dynamics simulations. Three aspects are discussed in this paper. (1) Detwinning in single-phase Cu with respect to growth twins, (2) deformation twinning in Ag-Cu composites, and (3) deformation twinning mechanisms in hcp metals. The main conclusion is that atomic structures of interfaces (twin boundaries, two-phases interface, and grain boundaries) play a crucial role in nucleating and propagating of deformation twins.

Solar twins in M67

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The discovery of true solar analogues is fundamental for a better understanding of the Sun and of the solar system. The open cluster M67 offers a unique opportunity to search for solar analogues because its chemical composition and age are very similar to those of the Sun. We analyze FLAMES spectra of a large number of M67 main sequence stars to identify solar analogues in this cluster. We first determine cluster members which are likely not binaries, by combining proper motions and radial velocity measurements. We concentrate our analysis on the determination of stellar effective temperature, using analyses of line-depth ratios and H$\\alpha$ wings, making a direct comparison with the solar spectrum obtained with the same instrument. We also compute the lithium abundance for all the stars.Ten stars have both the temperature derived by line-depth ratios and H$\\alpha$ wings within 100 K from the Sun. From these stars we derive, assuming a cluster reddening $E(B-V)=0.041$, the solar colour $(B-V)_\\odot=0.649\\pm0.016$ and a cluster distance modulus of 9.63. Five stars are most similar (within 60 K) to the Sun and candidates to be true solar twins. These stars have also a low Li content, comparable to the photospheric abundance of the Sun, likely indicating a similar mixing evolution. We find several candidates for the best solar analogues ever. These stars are amenable to further spectroscopic investigations and planet search. The solar colours are determined with rather high accuracy with an independent method, as well as the cluster distance modulus.

Low-noise macroscopic twin beams

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Applying a multiphoton-subtraction technique to two-color macroscopic squeezed vacuum state of light generated via high-gain parametric down conversion we conditionally prepare a new state of light: bright multi-mode low-noise twin beams. The obtained results demonstrate up to 8-fold suppression of noise in each beam while preserving and even moderately improving the nonclassical photon number correlations between the beams. The prepared low-noise macroscopic state, containing up to 2000 photons per mode, is not among the states achievable through nonlinear optical processes. The proposed technique substantially improves the usefulness of twin beams for quantum technologies.

Twinning effect on photoluminescence spectra of ZnSe nanowires

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Bandgap engineering in a single material along the axial length of nanowires may be realized by arranging periodic twinning, whose twin plane is vertical to the axial length of nanowires. In this paper, we report the effect of twin on photoluminescence of ZnSe nanowires, which refers to the bandgap of it. The exciton-related emission peaks of transverse twinning ZnSe nanowires manifest a 10-meV-blue-shift in comparison with those of longitudinal twinning ZnSe nanowires. The blue-shift is attributed to quantum confinement effect, which is influenced severely by the proportion of wurtzite ZnSe layers in ZnSe nanowires.

The Twin Higgs mechanism and Composite Higgs

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We combine the Twin Higgs mechanism with the paradigm of Composite Higgs models. In this class of models the Higgs is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson from a strongly coupled sector near the TeV scale, and it is additionally protected by a discrete symmetry due to the twin mechanism. We discuss the model building issues associated with this setup and quantify the tuning needed to achieve the correct electroweak vacuum and the Higgs mass. In contrast to standard Composite Higgs models, the lightest resonance associated with the top sector is the uncolored mirror top, while the colored top partners can be made parameterically heavier without extra tuning. In some cases, the vector resonances are predicted to lie in the multi-TeV range. We present models where the resonances - both fermions and vectors - being heavier alleviates the pressure on naturalness coming from direct searches demonstrating that theories with low tuning may survive constraints from the Large Hadron Collider.

Two wide-angle imaging neutral-atom spectrometers (TWINS)

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Two Wide-angle Imaging Neutral-atom Spectrometers (TWINS) is a revolutionary new mission designed to stereoscopically image the magnetosphere in charge exchange neutral atoms for the first time. The authors propose to fly two identical TWINS instruments as a mission of opportunity on two widely-spaced high-altitude, high-inclination US Government spacecraft. Because the spacecraft are funded independently, TWINS can provide a vast quantity of high priority science observations (as identified in an ongoing new missions concept study and the Sun-Earth Connections Roadmap) at a small fraction of the cost of a dedicated mission. Because stereo observations of the near-Earth space environs will provide a particularly graphic means for visualizing the magnetosphere in action, and because of the dedication and commitment of the investigator team to the principles of carrying space science to the broader audience, TWINS will also be an outstanding tool for public education and outreach.

Influence of shockwave obliquity on deformation twin formation in Ta

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Energetic loading subjects a material to a 'Taylor wave' (triangular wave) loading profile that experiences an evolving balance of hydrostatic (spherical) and deviatoric stresses. While much has been learned over the past five decades concerning the propensity of deformation twinning in samples shockloaded using 'square-topped' profiles as a function of peak stress, achieved most commonly via flyer plate loading, less is known concerning twinning propensity during non-I-dimensional sweeping detonation wave loading. Systematic small-scale energetically-driven shock loading experiments were conducted on Ta samples shock loaded with PEFN that was edge detonated. Deformation twinning was quantified in post-mortem samples as a function of detonation geometry and radial position. In the edge detonated loading geometry examined in this paper, the average volume fraction of deformation twins was observed to drastically increase with increasing shock obliquity. The results of this study are discussed in light of the formation mechanisms of deformation twins, previous literature studies of twinning in shocked materials, and modeling of the effects of shock obliquity on the evolution of the stress tensor during shock loading.

On existence of infinite primes and infinite twin primes

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The twin primes conjecture is a very old problem. Tacitly it is supposed that the primes it deals with are finite. In the present paper we consider three problems that are not related to finite primes but deal with infinite integers. The main tool of our investigation is a numeral system proposed recently that allows one to express various infinities and infinitesimals easily and by a finite number of symbols. The problems under consideration are the following and for all of them we give affermative answers: (i) do infinite primes exist? (ii) do infinite twin primes exist? (ii) is the set of infinite twin primes infinite? Examples of these three kinds of objects are given.

Final Project Report - ARM CLASIC CIRPAS Twin Otter Aerosol

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The NOAA/ESRL/GMD aerosol group made three types of contributions related to airborne measurements of aerosol light scattering and absorption for the Cloud and Land Surface Interaction Campaign (CLASIC) in June 2007 on the Twin Otter research airplane operated by the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely-Piloted Aircraft Studies (CIRPAS). GMD scientists served as the instrument mentor for the integrating nephelometer and particle soot absorption photometer (PSAP) on the Twin Otter during CLASIC, and were responsible for (1) instrument checks/comparisons; (2) instrument trouble shooting/repair; and (3) data quality control (QC) and submittal to the archive.

Phenomenology of The Left-Right Twin Higgs Model

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The twin Higgs mechanism has recently been proposed to solve the little hierarchy problem. We study the implementation of the twin Higgs mechanism in left-right models. At TeV scale, heavy quark and gauge bosons appear, with rich collider phenomenology. In addition, there are extra Higgses, some of which couple to both the Standard Model fermion sector and the gauge sector, while others couple to the gauge bosons only. We present the particle spectrum, and study the general features of the collider phenomenology of this class of model at the Large Hadron Collider.

On the role of twinning in solid-state reactions

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

A new concept of the role of twinning in processes of plastic deformation is proposed which suggests mechanical twinning to be the main mechanism of solid-state reactions under the deformation mixing of components, in particular, the grinding of aluminum oxide (Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}) and yttrium oxide (Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}) powders, as a result of which yttrium-aluminum garnet (Y{sub 3}Al{sub 5}O{sub 12}) particles are formed.

Comparative study of nonclassicality, entanglement, and dimensionality of multimode noisy twin beams

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Nonclassicality, entanglement, as well as dimensionality of a noisy twin beam are determined using characteristic function of the beam written in the Fock basis. One-to-one correspondence between the negativity quantifying entanglement and the nonclassicality depth is revealed. Twin beams, which are either entangled or nonclassical (independent of their entanglement), are observed only for the limited degrees of noise that degrades their quantumness. Dimensionality of the twin beam quantified by the participation ratio is compared with the dimensionality of entanglement determined from the negativity. The partition of the degrees of freedom of the twin beam into those related to entanglement and to noise is suggested. Both single-mode and multimode twin beams are analyzed. Weak nonclassicality based on integrated-intensity quasidistributions of multimode twin beams is studied. Relation of the model to the experimental twin beams is discussed.

In late 1994, the Ching Fu shipyard in Taiwan delivered a chemical tanker to Fram Shipping, for operations around Northern Europe for Norsk Hydro. The 13000 dwt tanker design is optimized to have the lowest possible operational cost for the given dead-weight capacity. Waertsilae Propulsion has from an early stage contributed to the development of the propulsion system. The company proposed the Waertsilae Propac concept, including the hydrodynamic design and the supply of the main components. The propeller was designed using in-house computer programs, and the results confirmed by model tests, both at Danish Maritime Institute (DMI) in Copenhagen, and at SSPA Maritime Consulting in Gothenburg. The hull form for the tanker was optimized by a special bulb design to reduce the wave resistance. The vessel is also designed with a special twin skeg arrangement in the stern. This solution allows for two large and efficient propellers to be installed.

Heterologous protein production using the twin arginine translocation pathway

DOE Patents [OSTI]

Provided are means for evaluating and identifying putative substrates of the twin arginine translocation (Tat) secretory pathway in Streptomyces and other bacterial species. Also provided, therefore, are simple ways to express, secrete and purify correctly folded heterologous proteins on a large scale using host microorganisms, such as, Streptomyces and the Tat pathway therein. Many of the thus-produced proteins are of significant therapeutic value in the pharmaceutical and biochemical industries, particularly when they can be secreted from the host in fully-folded active form. Accordingly, there are further provided the heterologous proteins produced by the Tat secretion pathway using the foregoing methods, and the computer algorithm used to identify the Tat signal sequence and putative substrates.

THE FUTURE OF THE SUN: AN EVOLVED SOLAR TWIN REVEALED BY CoRoT

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The question of whether the Sun is peculiar within the class of solar-type stars has been the subject of active investigation over the past three decades. Although several solar twins have been found with stellar parameters similar to those of the Sun (albeit in a range of Li abundances and with somewhat different compositions), their rotation periods are unknown, except for 18 Sco, which is younger than the Sun and with a rotation period shorter than solar. It is difficult to obtain rotation periods for stars of solar age from ground-based observations, as a low-activity level implies a shallow rotational modulation of their light curves. CoRoT has provided space-based long time series from which the rotation periods of solar twins as old as the Sun could be estimated. Based on high-signal-to-noise, high-resolution spectroscopic observations gathered at the Subaru Telescope, we show that the star CoRoT ID 102684698 is a somewhat evolved solar twin with a low Li abundance. Its rotation period is 29 {+-} 5 days, compatible with its age (6.7 Gyr) and low lithium content, A{sub Li} {approx}< 0.85 dex. Interestingly, our CoRoT solar twin seems to have enhanced abundances of the refractory elements with respect to the Sun, a typical characteristic of most nearby twins. With a magnitude V {approx_equal} 14.1, ID 102684698 is the first solar twin revealed by CoRoT, the farthest field solar twin so far known, and the only solar twin older than the Sun for which a rotation period has been determined.

Creating a single twin boundary between two CdTe (111) wafers with controlled rotation angle by wafer bonding

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The single twin boundary with crystallographic orientation relationship (1{sup ¯}1{sup ¯}1{sup ¯})//(111) [01{sup ¯}1]//[011{sup ¯}] was created by wafer bonding. Electron diffraction patterns and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images demonstrated the well control of the rotation angle between the bonded pair. At the twin boundary, one unit of wurtzite structure was found between two zinc-blende matrices. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy images showed Cd- and Te-terminated for the two bonded portions, respectively. The I-V curve across the twin boundary showed increasingly nonlinear behavior, indicating a potential barrier at the bonded twin boundary.

Mechanistic Selection and Growth of Twinned Bicrystalline Primary Si in Near Eutectic Al-Si Alloys

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Morphological evolution and selection of angular primary silicon is investigated in near-eutectic Al-Si alloys. Angular silicon arrays are grown directionally in a Bridgman furnace at velocities in the regime of 10{sup -3} m/sec and with a temperature gradient of 7.5 x 10{sup 3} K/m. Under these conditions, the primary Si phase grows as an array of twinned bicrystalline dendrites, where the twinning gives rise to a characteristic 8-pointed star-shaped primary morphology. While this primary Si remains largely faceted at the growth front, a complex structure of coherent symmetric twin boundaries enables various adjustment mechanisms which operate to optimize the characteristic spacings within the primary array. In the work presented here, this primary silicon growth morphology is examined in detail. In particular, this thesis describes the investigation of: (1) morphological selection of the twinned bicrystalline primary starshape morphology; (2) primary array behavior, including the lateral propagation of the starshape grains and the associated evolution of a strong <100> texture; (3) the detailed structure of the 8-pointed star-shaped primary morphology, including the twin boundary configuration within the central core; (4) the mechanisms of lateral propagation and spacing adjustment during array evolution; and (5) the thermosolutal conditions (i.e. operating state) at the primary growth front, including composition and phase fraction in the vicinity of the primary tip.

Kansas City`s Union Station redevelopment opportunity -- Environmental challenges

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Kansas City`s Union Station, located at the center of a 1.7 million metropolitan population, is the second largest train station in the United States. The Station ceased to operate as a train station in 1983 and has since been falling into an increasing state of disrepair. This paper provides an insight into ``brownfield`` redevelopment and renovation for adaptive reuse of major turn of the century facilities such as Union Station. Substantial assessment and investigation activities have been conducted at Union Station for compliance and corrective action under RCRA, TSCA, and associated state regulations encompassing remediation estimated at more than $3 million. Recognized environmental conditions identified at Union Station included potential underground storage tanks; solid wastes, special wastes, and potentially hazardous wastes located inside the building; free liquids in sumps and elevator pits; asbestos-containing materials; lead-based paint; and potential for soil contamination on the surrounding property.

Quantum Key Ditribution Based on Quantum Intensity Correlation of Twin Beams

E-Print Network [OSTI]

A new and simple quantum key distribution scheme based on the quantum intensity correlation of optical twin beams and the directly local measurements of intensity noise of single optical beam is presented and experimentally demonstrated. Using the twin beams with the quantum intensity correlation of 5dB the effective bit rate of $2\\times 10^7bits/s$ is completed. The noncloning of quantum systems and the sensitivity of the existing correlations to losses provide the physical mechamism for the security against eavesdropping. In the presented scheme the signal modulation and homodyne detection are not needed.

Broadband squeezing of quantum noise in a Michelson interferometer with Twin-Signal-Recycling

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Twin-Signal-Recycling (TSR) builds on the resonance doublet of two optically coupled cavities and efficiently enhances the sensitivity of an interferometer at a dedicated signal frequency. We report on the first experimental realization of a Twin-Signal-Recycling Michelson interferometer and also its broadband enhancement by squeezed light injection. The complete setup was stably locked and a broadband quantum noise reduction of the interferometers shot noise by a factor of up to 4\\,dB was demonstrated. The system was characterized by measuring its quantum noise spectra for several tunings of the TSR cavities. We found good agreement between the experimental results and numerical simulations.

Concentration profiles across twin boundaries in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6+{delta}}

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Twin boundaries in polycrystalline YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6+{delta}} have been studied by atom-probe field-ion microscopy. Oxygen depletion at a twin boundary in a {delta}=0.6 material was observed. The width of the depleted region was 6{endash}7 nm. It agrees well with the width of oxygen depletion calculated from the oxygen-depleted twin boundary model by Jou and Washburn. However, a twin boundary in a {delta}=0.9 material did not show any oxygen depletion. This study provides direct evidence of oxygen depletion at twin boundaries in polycrystalline YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6+{delta}} ceramics. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Preparation of high-strength nanometer scale twinned coating and foil

DOE Patents [OSTI]

Very high strength single phase stainless steel coating has been prepared by magnetron sputtering onto a substrate. The coating has a unique microstructure of nanometer spaced twins that are parallel to each other and to the substrate surface. For cases where the coating and substrate do not bind strongly, the coating can be peeled off to provide foil.

Giant Narrowband Twin-Beam Generation along the Pump Energy Propagation

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Walk-off effects, originating from the difference between the group and phase velocities, limit the efficiency of nonlinear optical interactions. While transverse walk-off can be eliminated by proper medium engineering, longitudinal walk-off is harder to avoid. In particular, ultrafast twin- beam generation via pulsed parametric down-conversion (PDC) and four-wave mixing (FWM) is only possible in short crystals or fibres or in double-path schemes. Here we show that in high-gain PDC, one can overcome the destructive role of both effects and even turn them into useful tools for shaping the emission. In our experiment, one of the twin beams is emitted along the pump Poynting vector or its group velocity matches that of the pump. The result is dramatically enhanced generation of both twin beams, with the simultaneous narrowing of angular and frequency spectrum. The effect will enable efficient generation of ultrafast twin photons and beams in cavities, waveguides, and whispering-gallery mode resonators.

Surface and grain boundary scattering in nanometric Cu thin films: A quantitative analysis including twin boundaries

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The relative contributions of various defects to the measured resistivity in nanocrystalline Cu were investigated, including a quantitative account of twin-boundary scattering. It has been difficult to quantitatively assess the impact twin boundary scattering has on the classical size effect of electrical resistivity, due to limitations in characterizing twin boundaries in nanocrystalline Cu. In this study, crystal orientation maps of nanocrystalline Cu films were obtained via precession-assisted electron diffraction in the transmission electron microscope. These orientation images were used to characterize grain boundaries and to measure the average grain size of a microstructure, with and without considering twin boundaries. The results of these studies indicate that the contribution from grain-boundary scattering is the dominant factor (as compared to surface scattering) leading to enhanced resistivity. The resistivity data can be well-described by the combined Fuchs–Sondheimer surface scattering model and Mayadas–Shatzkes grain-boundary scattering model using Matthiessen's rule with a surface specularity coefficient of p?=?0.48 and a grain-boundary reflection coefficient of R?=?0.26.

MASS-ANGULAR-MOMENTUM RELATIONS IMPLIED BY MODELS OF TWIN PEAK QUASI-PERIODIC OSCILLATIONS

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Twin peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) appear in the X-ray power-density spectra of several accreting low-mass neutron star (NS) binaries. Observations of the peculiar Z-source Circinus X-1 display unusually low QPO frequencies. Using these observations, we have previously considered the relativistic precession (RP) twin peak QPO model to estimate the mass of the central NS in Circinus X-1. We have shown that such an estimate results in a specific mass-angular-momentum (M - j) relation rather than a single preferred combination of M and j. Here we confront our previous results with another binary, the atoll source 4U 1636-53 that displays the twin peak QPOs at very high frequencies, and extend the consideration to various twin peak QPO models. In analogy to the RP model, we find that these imply their own specific M - j relations. We explore these relations for both sources and note differences in the {chi}{sup 2} behavior that represent a dichotomy between high- and low-frequency sources. Based on the RP model, we demonstrate that this dichotomy is related to a strong variability of the model predictive power across the frequency plane. This variability naturally comes from the radial dependence of characteristic frequencies of orbital motion. As a consequence, the restrictions on the models resulting from observations of low-frequency sources are weaker than those in the case of high-frequency sources. Finally we also discuss the need for a correction to the RP model and consider the removing of M - j degeneracies, based on the twin peak QPO-independent angular momentum estimates.

Floating Cities, Islands and States

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Many small countries are in need of additional territory. They build landfills and expensive artificial islands. The ocean covers 71 per cent of the Earth surface. Those countries (or persons of wealth) starting the early colonization of the ocean may obtain advantages through additional territory or creating their own independent state. An old idea is building a big ship. The best solution to this problem, however, is the provision of floating cities, islands, and states. The author idea is to use for floating cities, islands, and states a cheap floating platform created from a natural ice field taken from the Arctic or Antarctic oceans. These cheap platforms protected by air-film (bottom and sides) and a conventional insulating cover (top) and having a cooling system can exist for an unlimited time. They can be increased in number or size at any time, float in warm oceans, travel to different continents and countries, serve as artificial airports, harbors and other marine improvements, as well as floating c...

Elizabeth City State University: Elizabeth City, North Carolina (Data)

DOE Data Explorer [Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)]

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Solar Radiation Monitoring Network operated from July 1985 through December 1996. Funded by DOE, the six-station network provided 5-minute averaged measurements of direct normal, global, and diffuse horizontal solar irradiance. The data were processed at NREL to improve the assessment of the solar radiation resources in the southeastern United States. Historical HBCU data available online include quality assessed 5-min data, monthly reports, and plots. In January 1997 the HBCU sites became part of the CONFRRM solar monitoring network and data from the two remaining active stations, Bluefield State College and Elizabeth City State University, are collected by the NREL Measurement & Instrumentation Data Center (MIDC).

Longitudinal Dynamics of Twin Electron Bunches in a High-energy Linac

DOE Public Access Gateway for Energy & Science Beta (PAGES Beta)

The recent development of two-color x-ray free-electron lasers, as well as the successful demonstration of high-gradient witness bunch acceleration in a plasma, have generated strong interest in electron bunch trains, where two or more electron bunches are generated, accelerated and compressed in the same accelerating bucket. In this paper we give a detailed analysis of a twin-bunch technique in a high-energy linac. This method allows the generation of two electron bunches with high peak current and independent control of time delay and energy separation. We #12;find that the wake#12;fields in the accelerator structures play an important role in the twin-bunch compression, and through analysis show that they can be used to extend the available time delay range. Based on the theoretical model and simulations we propose several methods to achieve larger time delay.

City of Tallahassee Innovative Energy Initiatives

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The City of Tallahassee's Innovative Energy Initiatives program sought, first, to evaluate customer response and acceptance to in-home Smart Meter-enabled technologies that allow customers intelligent control of their energy usage. Additionally, this project is in furtherance of the City of Tallahassee's ongoing efforts to expand and enhance the City's Smart Grid capacity and give consumers more tools with which to effectively manage their energy consumption. This enhancement would become possible by establishing an "operations or command center" environment that would be designed as a dual use facility for the City's employees - field and network staff - and systems responsible for a Smart Grid network. A command center would also support the City's Office of Electric Delivery and Energy Reliability's objective to overcome barriers to the deployment of new technologies that will ensure a truly modern and robust grid capable of meeting the demands of the 2151 century.

Length sensing and control of a Michelson interferometer with Power Recycling and Twin Signal Recycling cavities

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The techniques of power recycling and signal recycling have proven as key concepts to increase the sensitivity of large-scale gravitational wave detectors by independent resonant enhancement of light power and signal sidebands within the interferometer. Developing the latter concept further, twin signal recycling was proposed as an alternative to conventional detuned signal recycling. Twin signal recycling features the narrow-band sensitivity gain of conventional detuned signal recycling but furthermore facilitates the injection of squeezed states of light, increases the detector sensitivity over a wide frequency band and requires a less complex detection scheme for optimal signal readout. These benefits come at the expense of an additional recycling mirror, thus increasing the number of degrees of freedom in the interferometer which need to be controlled. In this article we describe the development of a length sensing and control scheme and its successful application to a tabletop-scale power recycled Michelson interferometer with twin signal recycling. We were able to lock the interferometer in all relevant longitudinal degrees of freedom, enabling the long-term stable operation of the experiment. We thus laid the foundation for further investigations of this interferometer topology to evaluate its viability for the application in gravitational wave detectors.

Environmental Survey preliminary report, Kansas City Plant, Kansas City, Missouri

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This report presents the preliminary findings from the first phase of the Environmental Survey of the United States Department of Energy (DOE), Kansas City Plant (KCP), conducted March 23 through April 3, 1987. The Survey is being conducted by a multidisciplinary team of environmental specialists, led and managed by the Office of Environment, Safety and Health's Office of Environmental Audit. Individual team members are outside experts being supplied by a private contractor. The objective of the Survey is to identify environmental problems and areas of environmental risk associated with the KCP. The Survey covers all environmental media and all areas of environmental regulations. It is being performed in accordance with the DOE Environmental Survey Manual. This phase of the Survey involves the review of existing site environmental data observations of the operations performed at the KCP, and interviews with site personnel. The Survey team developed a Sampling and Analysis Plan to assist in further assessing certain environmental problems identified during its on-site activities. The Sampling and Analysis Plan is being executed by DOE's Argonne National Laboratory. When completed, the results will be incorporated into the KCP Environmental Survey Interim Report. The Interim Report will reflect the final determinations of the KCP Survey. 94 refs., 39 figs., 55 tabs.

What is Clean Cities? October 2011 (Brochure)

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Brochure describes the Clean Cities program and includes the contact information for its 85 coalitions. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Program (VTP), Clean Cities is a government-industry partnership that reduces petroleum consumption in the transportation sector. Clean Cities contributes to the energy, environmental, and economic security of the United States by supporting local decisions to reduce our dependence on imported petroleum. Established in 1993 in response to the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 1992, the partnership provides tools and resources for voluntary, community-centered programs to reduce consumption of petroleum-based fuels. In nearly 100 coalitions, government agencies and private companies voluntarily come together under the umbrella of Clean Cities. The partnership helps all parties identify mutual interests and meet the objectives of reducing the use of petroleum, developing regional economic opportunities, and improving air quality. Clean Cities deploys technologies and practices developed by VTP. These include idle-reduction equipment, electric-drive vehicles, fuel economy measures, and renewable and alternative fuels, such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (propane), electricity, hydrogen, biofuels, and biogas. Idle-reduction equipment is targeted primarily to buses and heavy-duty trucks, which use more than 2 billion gallons of fuel every year in the United States while idling. Clean Cities fuel economy measures include public education on vehicle choice and fuel-efficient driving practices.

Muon decays in the Earth's atmosphere, differential aging and the paradox of the twins

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Observation of the decay of muons produced in the Earth's atmosphere by cosmic ray interactions provides a graphic illustration of the counter-intuitive space-time predictions of special relativity theory. Muons at rest in the atmosphere, decaying simultaneously, are subject to a universal time-dilatation effect when viewed from a moving frame and so are also observed to decay simultaneously in all such frames. The analysis of this example reveals the underlying physics of the differential aging effect in Langevin's travelling-twin thought experiment.

Conditional transfer of quantum correlation in the intensity of twin beams

E-Print Network [OSTI]

A conditional protocol of transferring quantum-correlation in continuous variable regime was experimentally demonstrated. The quantum-correlation in two pairs of twin beams, each characterized by intensity-difference squeezing of 7.0 dB, was transferred to two initially independent idler beams. The quantum-correlation transfer resulted in intensity-difference squeezing of 4.0 dB between two idler beams. The dependence of preparation probability and transfer fidellity on the selection bandwidth was also studied.

Plastification of polymers in twin-screw-extruders: New visualization technic using high-speed imaging

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The initial melting of the first granules through plastic energy dissipation (PED) at the beginning of the melting zone, in the co-rotating twin-screw extruder is visualized in this work. The visualization was created through the use of a high speed camera in the cross section of the melting zone. The parameters screw speed, granule-temperature, temperature-profile, type of polymer and back pressure were examined. It was shown that the screw speed and the temperature-profile have significant influence on the rate of initial melting.

City of Chicago Brownfield case study

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Dealing with complex environmental issues frequently inhibits redevelopment of industrial sites in urban settings. In 1993, the City of Chicago (City) Department of Planning and Development, Department of Buildings, and Mayor`s Office joined the Department of Environment to investigate reuse of former industrial/commercial properties (brownfields) suspected of environmental or industrial contamination. The collective result is the Brownfield Program, a three-pronged initiative: Brownfield Pilot Program, Brownfield Forum, and Brownfield Research. Black and Veatch Waste Science, Inc. (Waste Science) carried the Brownfield Program forward by performing a Phase 1 environmental site assessment for the City on one of five pilot sites. Waste Science subsequently completed a Phase 2 environmental site assessment and Phase 3 site remediation at the site. Waste oil and PCB-contaminated soil was removed.

Chains of quasiclassical information for bipartite correlations and the role of twin observables

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Having the quantum correlations in a general mixed or pure bipartite state in mind, the part of information accessible by simultaneous measurement on both subsystems is shown never to exceed the part accessible by measurement on one subsystem, which, in turn is proved not to exceed the von Neumann mutual information. A particular pair of (opposite-subsystem) observables is shown to be responsible both for the amount of quasiclassical correlations and for that of the purely quantum entanglement in the pure-state case: the former via simultaneous subsystem measurements, and the latter through the entropy of coherence or of incompatibility, which is defined for the general case. The observables at issue are so-called twin observables. A general definition of the latter is given in terms of their detailed properties.

The development of uranium foil farication technology utilizing twin roll method for Mo-99 irradiation target

MDS Nordion in Canada, occupying about 75% of global supply of Mo-99 isotope, has provided the irradiation target of Mo-99 using the rod-type UAl sub x alloys with HEU(High Enrichment Uranium). As the uranium foils could be fabricated in laboratory scale, not in commercialized scale by hot rolling method due to significant problems in foil quality, productivity and economic efficiency, attention has shifted to the development of new technology. Under these circumstances, the invention of uranium foil fabrication technology utilizing twin-roll casting method in KAERI is found to be able to fabricate LEU or...

Employing Twin Crabbing Cavities to Address Variable Transverse Coupling of Beams in the MEIC

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The design strategy of the Medium Energy Electron-Ion Collider (MEIC) at Jefferson Lab contemplates both matching of the emittance aspect ratios and a 50 mrad crossing angle along with crab crossing scheme for both electron and ion beams over the energy range (?s=20-70 GeV) to achieve high luminosities at the interaction points (IPs). However, the desired locations for placing the crabbing cavities may include regions where the transverse degrees of freedom of the beams are coupled with variable coupling strength that depends on the collider rings’ magnetic elements (solenoids and skew quadrupoles). In this work we explore the feasibility of employing twin rf dipoles that produce a variable direction crabbing kick to account for a range of transverse coupling of both beams.

Application of the method of effective potentials to a model for twinning in elastic materials

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We extend the method of effective potentials to systems with next-nearest-neighbor interactions, and apply it to a one-dimensional discrete model for twins in elastic materials. The energy of the system is given by H = +(..gamma../2) (u/sub n//sub +1/-2u/sub n/+u/sub n-1/)/sup 2/ -cosu/sub n/, where the first two terms model the elastic strain-dependent energy which we take to be in the form of a double well in the strains and the third term gives its dependence on the discretized strain gradients. The periodic potential in the last term is introduced to allow for additional interactions with a background such as a parent phase, grain boundaries, or another array of twins. We obtain the phase diagram and show that it consists of various modulated commensurate as well as incommensurate ground-state configurations. We find continuous phonon-driven transitions between the homogeneous and any modulated phase, an incomplete devil's staircase in a narrow region close to the homogeneous phase and first-order soliton-driven transitions between commensurate phases. The first-order transition lines end at triple points where three commensurate phases coexist. In contrast to other nonconvex models we do not find here any superdegenerate points. We give general arguments which exclude the existence of such points in the present model. Preliminary results obtained by driving the system are discussed. These consist of various metastable configurations exhibiting strong hysteretic variation with the driving force.

Transitions of Dislocation Glide to Twinning and Shear Transformation in Shock-Deformed Tantalum

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Recent TEM studies of deformation substructures developed in tantalum and tantalum-tungsten alloys shock-deformed at a peak pressure {approx}45 GPa have revealed the occurrence of shock-induced phase transformation [i.e., {alpha} (bcc) {yields} {omega} (hexagonal) transition] in addition to shock-induced deformation twinning. The volume fraction of twin and {omega} domains increases with increasing content of tungsten. A controversy arises since tantalum exhibits no clear equilibrium solid-state phase transformation under hydrostatic pressures up to 174 GPa. It is known that phase stability of a material system under different temperatures and pressures is determined by system free energy. That is, a structural phase that has the lowest free energy will be stable. For pressure-induced phase transformation under hydrostatic-pressure conditions, tantalum may undergo phase transition when the free energy of a competing phase {omega} becomes smaller than that of the parent phase {alpha} above a critical pressure (P{sub eq}), i.e., the equilibrium {alpha} {yields} {omega} transition occurs when the pressure increases above P{sub eq}. However, it is also known that material shocked under dynamic pressure can lead to a considerable increase in temperature, and the higher the applied pressure the higher the overheat temperature. This means a higher pressure is required to achieve an equivalent volume (or density) in dynamic-pressure conditions than in hydrostatic-pressure conditions. Accordingly, P{sub eq} for {alpha} {yields} {omega} transition is anticipated to increase under dynamic-pressure conditions as a result of the temperature effect. Although no clear equilibrium transition pressure under hydrostatic-pressure conditions is reported for tantalum, it is reasonable to assume that Peq under dynamic-pressure conditions will be considerably higher than that under hydrostatic-pressure conditions if there is a pressure-induced {alpha} {yields} {omega} transition in tantalum. The observation of {alpha} {yields} {omega} transition in shock-compressed tantalum and tantalum-tungsten alloys at {approx}45 GPa in fact reveals the occurrence of a non-equilibrium phase transformation at such a low pressure. We therefore postulated that the equation of state (EOS) based on static thermodynamics, which asserts that the system free energy (G) is a function of volume (V), pressure (P), and temperature (T), i.e., G = F(V, P, T) is insufficient to rationalize the system free energy under dynamic-pressure conditions. Since shear deformation was found to play a crucial role in shock-induced deformation twins and {omega} phase, the density and arrangement of dislocations, which can alter and increase the system free energy, should also be taken into account to rationalize the non-equilibrium phase transformation in shocked tantalum. Typical arrangements of high-density dislocations formed in pure tantalum shocked at {approx}45 GPa are shown in Figs. 1a and 1b. Figure 1a reveals a cellular dislocation structure but no twins or {omega} phase-domains were observed in this region. The formation of low-energy type cellular dislocation structures indicates the occurrence of dynamic-recovery reactions to reduce dislocation density in this region. Figure 1b shows an evenly distributed dislocation structure with a local dislocation density ({rho}) as high as {approx}5 x 10{sup 12} cm{sup -2} according to {rho} {approx} 1/l{sup 2}, where l ({approx}4.5 nm) is the spacing between two dislocations. Here shock-induced twin plates and {omega} phase-domains can be readily seen. These observations provide us a clue that dislocation arrangement and density population, which can alter system free energy through the changes of dislocation self-energy (E{sub s}) and dislocation interaction energy (E{sub ij}), are relevant to the occurrence of shock-induced twinning and phase transformation in tantalum. The objective of this paper is to report new results obtained from pure tantalum and tantalum tungsten alloys shocked at {approx}30 GPa in order to clarify the corr

Clean Cities 2012 Annual Metrics Report

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Clean Cities program advances the nation's economic, environmental, and energy security by supporting local actions to cut petroleum use in transportation. A national network of nearly 100 Clean Cities coalitions brings together stakeholders in the public and private sectors to deploy alternative and renewable fuels, idle-reduction measures, fuel economy improvements, and new transportation technologies, as they emerge. Each year DOE asks Clean Cities coordinators to submit annual reports of their activities and accomplishments for the previous calendar year. Data and information are submitted via an online database that is maintained as part of the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Coordinators submit a range of data that characterizes the membership, funding, projects, and activities of their coalitions. They also submit data about sales of alternative fuels, deployment of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), idle-reduction initiatives, fuel economy activities, and programs to reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT). NREL analyzes the data and translates them into petroleum-use reduction impacts, which are summarized in this report.

Effect of geometrical constraint condition on the formation of nanoscale twins in the Ni-based metallic glass composite

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We investigated the effect of geometrically constrained stress-strain conditions on the formation of nanotwins in alpha-brass phase reinforced Ni59Zr20Ti16Si2Sn3 metallic glass (MG) matrix deformed under macroscopic uniaxial compression. The specific geometrically constrained conditions in the samples lead to a deviation from a simple uniaxial state to a multi-axial stress state, for which nanocrystallization in the MG matrix together with nanoscale twinning of the brass reinforcement is observed in localized regions during plastic flow. The nanocrystals in the MG matrix and the appearance of the twinned structure in the reinforcements indicate that the strain energy is highly confined and the local stress reaches a very high level upon yielding. Both the effective distribution of reinforcements on the strain enhancement of composite and the effects of the complicated stress states on the development of nanotwins in the second-phase brass particles are discussed.

Kansas City Plant Celebrates Safety Milestone

ScienceCinema (OSTI)

A gang of motorcycle riders arrived at the NNSA's Kansas City Plant on July 1 to help celebrate a significant safety achievement - working nearly five million hours, covering a one-year period without a lost-time injury. The bikers -- some of whom are plant employees -- represent Bikers Against Child Abuse, the local nonprofit selected to receive a $5,000 donation as part of the plant's safety achievement celebration. The organization was selected because it aligns with the plant's community outreach focus on Family Safety & Security and partnership with the plant's union members.

Tri-Cities Index of Innovation and Technology

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

In 2001 and 2004, the Economic Development Office of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory published companion reports to the Washington Technology Center Index studies that provided additional information on the Tri-Cities (Kennewick-Richland-Pasco) area of the state, its technology businesses, and important advantages that the Tri-Cities have as places to live and do business. These reports also compared the Tri-Cities area to other technology-based metropolitan areas in the Pacific Northwest and nation along critical dimensions known to be important to technology firms. This report updates the material in these earlier reports, and highlights a growing Tri-Cities metropolitan area.
