  13. Strongly Hyperbolic Extensions of the ADM Hamiltonian

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    J. David Brown

    2008-07-10

The ADM Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity with prescribed lapse and shift is a weakly hyperbolic system of partial differential equations. In general weakly hyperbolic systems are not mathematically well posed. For well posedness, the theory should be reformulated so that the complete system, evolution equations plus gauge conditions, is (at least) strongly hyperbolic. Traditionally, reformulation has been carried out at the level of equations of motion. This typically destroys the variational and Hamiltonian structures of the theory. Here I show that one can extend the ADM formalism to (i) incorporate the gauge conditions as dynamical equations and (ii) affect the hyperbolicity of the complete system, all while maintaining a Hamiltonian description. The extended ADM formulation is used to obtain a strongly hyperbolic Hamiltonian description of Einstein's theory that is generally covariant under spatial diffeomorphisms and time reparametrizations, and has physical characteristics. The extended Hamiltonian formulation with 1+log slicing and gamma--driver shift conditions is weakly hyperbolic.

With a purpose of constructing a robust evolution system against numerical instability for integrating the Einstein equations, we propose a new formulation by adjusting the ADM evolution equations with constraints. We apply an adjusting method proposed by Fiske (2004) which uses the norm of the constraints, C2. One of the advantages of this method is that the effective signature of adjusted terms (Lagrange multipliers) for constraint-damping evolution is pre-determined. We demonstrate this fact by showing the eigenvalues of constraint propagation equations. We also perform numerical tests of this adjusted evolution system using polarized Gowdy-wave propagation, which show robust evolutions against the violation of the constraints than that of the standard ADM formulation.

ADM tetrad gravity is an Hamiltonian reformulation of General Relativity which gives new insight to the Dark Matter Problem. We impose constraints on the parameter space of ADM tetrad gravity with a Yukawa-like ansatz for the trace of the extrinsic curvature of the 3D hypersurfaces by fitting the orbit of the S2 star around the Black Hole in the Galactic center and using the perihelia of some of the planets of the Solar System. In the process of drug development it is of high importance to test the safety of new drugs with predictive value for human toxicity. A promising approach of toxicity testing is based on shifts in gene expression profiling of the liver. Toxicity screening based on animal liver cells cannot be directly extrapolated to humans due to species differences. The aim of this study was to evaluate precision-cut human liver slices as in vitro method for the prediction of human specific toxicity by toxicogenomics. The liver slices contain all cell types of the liver in their natural architecture. This is important since drug-induced toxicity often is a multi-cellular process. Previously we showed that toxicogenomic analysis of rat liver slices is highly predictive for rat in vivo toxicity. In this study we investigated the levels of gene expression during incubation up to 24 h with Affymetrix microarray technology. The analysis was focused on a broad spectrum of genes related to stress and toxicity, and on genes encoding for phase-I, -II and -III metabolizing enzymes and transporters. Observed changes in gene expression were associated with cytoskeleton remodeling, extracellular matrix and cell adhesion, but for the ADME-Tox related genes only minor changes were observed. PCA analysis showed that changes in gene expression were not associated with age, sex or source of the human livers. Slices treated with acetaminophen showed patterns of gene expression related to its toxicity. These results indicate that precision-cut human liver slices are relatively stable during 24 h of incubation and represent a valuable model for human in vitro hepatotoxicity testing despite the human inter-individual variability.

  3. Equivalence of ADM Hamiltonian and Effective Field Theory approaches at next-to-next-to-leading order spin1-spin2 coupling of binary inspirals

The next-to-next-to-leading order spin1-spin2 potential for an inspiralling binary, that is essential for accuracy to fourth post-Newtonian order, if both components in the binary are spinning rapidly, has been recently derived independently via the ADM Hamiltonian and the Effective Field Theory approaches, using different gauges and variables. Here we show the complete physical equivalence of the two results, thereby we first prove the equivalence of the ADM Hamiltonian and the Effective Field Theory approaches at next-to-next-to-leading order with the inclusion of spins. The main difficulty in the spinning sectors, which also prescribes the manner in which the comparison of the two results is tackled here, is the existence of redundant unphysical spin degrees of freedom, associated with the spin gauge choice of a point within the extended spinning object for its representative worldline. After gauge fixing and eliminating the unphysical degrees of freedom of the spin and its conjugate at the level of the action, we arrive at curved spacetime generalizations of the Newton-Wigner variables in closed form, which can also be used to obtain further Hamiltonians, based on an Effective Field Theory formulation and computation. Finally, we make use of our validated result to provide gauge invariant relations among the binding energy, angular momentum, and orbital frequency of an inspiralling binary with generic compact spinning components to fourth post-Newtonian order, including all known sectors up to date.

  7. Molecular Structures and Energetics of the (TiO?)n (n = 1-4) Clusters and Their Anions

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Li, Shenggang; Dixon, David A.

    2008-07-24

The research described in this product was performed in part in the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a national scientific user facility sponsored by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research and located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The (TiO?)n clusters and their anions for n ) 1-4 have been studied with coupled cluster theory [CCSD(T)] and density functional theory (DFT). For n > 1, numerous conformations are located for both the neutral and anionic clusters, and their relative energies are calculated at both the DFT and CCSD(T) levels. The CCSD(T) energies are extrapolated to the complete basis set limit for the monomer and dimer and calculated up to the triple-? level for the trimer and tetramer. The adiabatic and vertical electron detachment energies of the anionic clusters to the ground and first excited states of the neutral clusters are calculated at both levels and compared with the experimental results. The comparison allows for the definitive assignment of the groundstate structures of the anionic clusters. Anions of the dimer and tetramer are found to have very closely lying conformations within 2 kcal/mol at the CCSD(T) level, whereas that of the trimer does not. In addition, accurate clustering energies and heats of formation are calculated for the neutral clusters and compared with the available experimental data. Estimates of the titanium-oxygen bond energies show that they are stronger than the group VIB transition metal-oxygen bonds except for tungsten. The atomization energies of these clusters display much stronger basis set dependence than the clustering energies. This allows the calculation of more accurate heats of formation for larger clusters on the basis of calculated clustering energies.

  19. Derivation of the local-in-time fourth post-Newtonian ADM Hamiltonian for spinless compact binaries

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    Piotr Jaranowski; Gerhard Schäfer

    2015-08-05

The paper gives full details of the computation within the canonical formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner of the local-in-time part of the fourth post-Newtonian, i.e. of power eight in one over speed of light, conservative Hamiltonian of spinless compact binary systems. The Hamiltonian depends only on the bodies positions and momenta. Dirac delta distributions are taken as source functions. Their full control is furnished by dimensional continuation, by means of which the occurring ultra-violet (UV) divergences are uniquely regularized. The applied near-zone expansion of the time-symmetric Green function leads to infra-red (IR) divergences. Their analytic regularization results in one single ambiguity parameter. Unique fixation of it was successfully performed in T.Damour, P.Jaranowski, and G.Sch\\"afer, Phys. Rev. D 89, 064058 (2014) through far-zone matching. Technically as well as conceptually (back-scatter binding energy), the level of the Lamb shift in quantum electrodynamics is reached. In a first run a computation of all terms is performed in three-dimensional space using analytic Riesz-Hadamard regularization techniques. Then divergences are treated locally (i.e., around particles' positions for UV and in the vicinity of spatial infinity for IR divergences) by means of combined dimensional and analytic regularization. Various evolved analytic expressions are presented for the first time. The breakdown of the Leibniz rule for distributional derivatives is addressed as well as the in general non-distributive law when regularizing value of products of functions evaluated at their singular point.

In this manuscript, wave attributes of hot plasma around Reissner- Nordstrom-de Sitter (RN-dS) metric in a Veselago medium are in- vestigated. General relativistic magnetohydrodynamical (GRMHD) equations in planar coordinates for the RN-dS horizon are reformulated by implementation of ADM 3+1 technique. Further, perturba- tion scheme is used to arrive at linearly perturbed GRMHD equations whose component form is used to attain dispersion relations for rotating (non-magnetized and magnetized) plasma. Wave propagation in hot plasma is explained by three dimensional graphical representation of the wave number, refractive index, its change with respect to angular velocity, phase and group velocities. Finally, comparison of wave properties is presented, results reassert the presence of Veselago medium.

The Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium (MGSC) has partnered with Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and Schlumberger Carbon Services to conduct a large-volume, saline reservoir storage project at ADM’s agricultural products processing complex in Decatur, Illinois. The Development Phase project, named the Illinois Basin Decatur Project (IBDP) involves the injection of 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into a deep saline formation of the Illinois Basin over a three-year period. This report focuses on objectives, execution, and lessons learned/unanticipated results from the site development (relating specifically to surface equipment), operations, and the site closure plan.

The conserved charge called Y-ADM mass density associated with asymptotically translational Killing-Yano tensor gives us an appropriate physical meaning about the energy density of $p$ brane spacetimes or black strings. We investigated the positivity of energy density in black string spacetimes, using the spinorial technique introduced by Witten. Recently, the positivity of Y-ADM mass density in p brane spacetimes was discussed. In this paper, we will extend this discussion to the transversely asymptotically flat black string spacetimes containing an apparent horizon. We will give the sufficient conditions for the Y-ADM mass density to become positive in such spacetimes.

Generically, the asymmetric interactions in asymmetric dark matter (ADM) models could lead to decaying DM. We show that, for ADM that carries nonzero baryon number, the continuous flavor symmetries that generate the flavor structure in the quark sector also imply a looser lower bound on the mass scale of the asymmetric mediators between the dark and visible sectors. The mediators for B = 2 ADM that can produce a signal in the future indirect dark matter searches can thus also be searched for at the LHC. 2014-06-24

In this talk, we briefly present hylogenesis - a unified scenario for simultaneous generation of asymmetric dark matter (ADM) and visible baryons in the early Universe - and some of its experimental implications. A particularly interesting signature of hylogenesis is induced nucleon decay (IND), that is the possibility of baryon destruction in scattering from ADM. For some motivated range of parameters, IND can result in potentially observable signals in nucleon decay experiments. We also briefly discuss other signals of hylogenesis, including collider physics and astrophysical implications of IND.

    2015-01-01

Shape dynamics is a theory of gravity whose physical configuration space is composed of spatial conformal equivalence classes of 3-dimensional geometries. This physical configuration space is not a priori related to the one given by 4-dimensional space-time geometries, familiar to general relativists. Although one can largely match dynamical solutions arising in each theory, this is not always the case. One expects such differences in collapse situations that lead to the formation of black holes. In this paper we study spherical collapse of thin-shells of pressureless dust as a fully back-reacting dynamical system, in a context related to both shape dynamics and general relativity in ADM form in Constant Mean Curvature (CMC) gauge -- the particular time slicing where any correspondence between ADM and shape dynamics is manifest. To better accommodate the relational setting of shape dynamics, we also begin a study of collapse of two such shells in a compact Universe.

The project employed new processes to make emulsion polymers from reduced levels of petroleum-derived chemical feedstocks. Most waterborne paints contain spherical, emulsion polymer particles that serve as the film-forming binder phase. Our goal was to make emulsion polymer particles containing 30 percent feedstock that would function as effectively as commercial emulsions made from higher level feedstock. The processes developed yielded particles maintained their film formation capability and binding capacity while preserving the structural integrity of the particles after film formation. Rohm and Haas Company (ROH) and Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) worked together to employ novel polymer binders (ROH) and new, non-volatile, biomass-derived coalescing agents (ADM). The University of Minnesota Department of Chemical Engineering and Material Science utilized its unique microscopy capabilities to characterize films made from the New Emulsion Polymers (NEP).

In a previous work [1], we have argued that the algebra of non-abelian superselection rules is spontaneously broken to its maximal abelian subalgebra, that is, the algebra generated by its completing commuting set (the two Casimirs and a basis of its Cartan subalgebra). In this paper, alternative arguments confirming these results are presented. In addition, Lorentz invariance is shown to be broken in QCD, just as it is in QED. The experimental consequences of these results include fuzzy mass and spin shells of coloured particles like quarks, and decay life times which depend on the frame of observation [2, 4]. In a paper under preparation, these results are extended to the ADM Poincare' group and the local Lorentz group of frames. The renormalisation of the ADM energy by infrared gravitons is also estimated.

We study nonrelativistic gravity using the Hamiltonian formalism. For the dynamics of general relativity (relativistic gravity) the formalism is well known and called the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. We show that if the lapse function is constrained correctly, then nonrelativistic gravity is described by a consistent Hamiltonian system. Surprisingly, nonrelativistic gravity can have solutions identical to relativistic gravity ones. In particular, (anti-)de Sitter black holes of Einstein gravity and IR limit of Horava gravity are locally identical.

We introduce the MathGR package, written in Mathematica. The package can manipulate tensor and GR calculations with either abstract or explicit indices, simplify tensors with permutational symmetries, decompose tensors from abstract indices to partially or completely explicit indices and convert partial derivatives into total derivatives. Frequently used GR tensors and a model of FRW universe with ADM type perturbations are predefined. The package is built around the philosophy to "keep it simple", and makes use of latest tensor technologies of Mathematica.

We consider the issue of attaining a consistent Hamiltonian formulation, after a 3+1 splitting, of a well-defined action principle for asymptotically flat gravity. More precisely, our starting point is the gravitational first order Holst action with surface terms and fall-off conditions that make the variational principle and the covariant phase space formulation well-defined for asymptotically flat spacetimes. Keeping all surface terms and paying due attention to subtleties that arise from the different cut-offs at infinity, we give a derivation of the gravitational Hamiltonian starting from this action. The 3+1 decomposition and time gauge fixing results in a well-defined Hamiltonian action and a well-defined Hamiltonian formulation for the standard -and more general- asymptotic ADM conditions. Unlike the case of the Einstein-Hilbert action with Gibbons-Hawking-York or Hawking-Horowitz terms, here we {\\it {do}} recover the ADM energy-momentum from the covariant surface term also when more general variations respecting asymptotic flatness are allowed. Additionally, our strategy yields a derivation of the parity conditions for connection variables independent of the conditions given by Regge and Teitelboim for ADM variables. Finally, we exhibit the other Poincar\\'e generators in terms of real Ashtekar-Barbero variables. We complement previous constructions in self-dual variables by pointing out several subtleties and refining the argument showing that -on shell- they coincide with the ADM charges. Our results represent the first consistent treatment of the Hamiltonian formulation for the connection-tetrad gravitational degrees of freedom, starting from a well posed action, in the case of asymptotically flat boundary conditions.

  5. The formulation of General Relativity in extended phase space as a way to its quantization

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    T. P. Shestakova

    2009-11-30

Our attempts to find an explanation for quantum behavior of the Early Universe appeal, as a rule, to the Wheeler - DeWitt Quantum Geometrodynamics which relies upon Hamiltonian formulation of General Relativity proposed by Arnowitt, Deser and Misner (ADM). In spite of the fact that the basic ideas of this approach were put forward about fifty years ago, even now we do not have clear understanding what Hamiltonian formulation of General Relativity must be. An evidence for it gives a recent paper by Kiriushcheva and Kuzmin [arXiv:0809.0097], where the authors claim that the formulation by ADM and that by Dirac made in his seminal work of 1958 are not equivalent. If so, we face the question what formalism should be chosen. Another problem is that we need a well-grounded procedure of constructing a generator of transformations in phase space for all gravitational variables including gauge ones. It suggests the notion of extended phase space. After analyzing the situation, we show that Hamiltonian formulation in extended phase space is a real alternative to Dirac and ADM formulations and can be constructed to be equivalent to the original (Lagrangian) formulation of General Relativity. Quantization in extended phase space is straightforward and leads to a new description of quantum Universe in which an essential place is given to gauge degrees of freedom.

  6. Hamiltonian formulation of General Relativity 50 years after the Dirac celebrated paper: do unsolved problems still exist?

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    T. P. Shestakova

    2010-01-25

About 50 years ago, in 1958, Dirac published his formulation of generalized Hamiltonian dynamics for gravitation. Several years later Arnowitt, Deser and Misner (ADM) proposed their description of the dynamics of General Relativity which became a basis of the Wheeler - DeWitt Quantum Geometrodynamics. There exist also other works where the Hamiltonian formulation of gravitational theory was discussed. In spite of decades passed from the famous papers by Dirac and ADM, there are unsolved problems. Namely, are the Dirac and ADM formulations equivalent to each other? Are these formulations equivalent to the original (Lagrangian) Einstein theory? Is the group of transformation in phase space the same as the group of gauge transformation of the Einstein theory? What are rules according to which a generator of transformations in phase space should be constructed? Let us mention also another approach based on extended phase space where gauge degrees of freedom are treated on the equal ground with physical degrees of freedom. Our purpose is to review the above questions and to demonstrate advantages of the extended phase space approach by the example of a simple model with finite number degrees of freedom.

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    E. Kyriakopoulos

    2006-11-10

Exact static spherically symmetric charged black holes in four dimensions are presented. One of them has only electric charge and another electric and magnetic charges. In these solutions the metric is asymptotically flat, has two horizons, irremovable singularity only at $r=0$, and the dilaton field is singular only at $r=0$. The solution with electric charge only is characterized by three free parameters, the ADM mass, the electric charge and an additional free parameter. It can be considered as a modification of the GHS-GM solution obtained by changing the coupling between dilaton and electromagnetic field. The general dyonic solution is again characterized by three free parameters, the ADM mass, the magnetic charge and an additional free parameter, which is not the electric charge. According to a definition of the no-hair conjecture the solutions are "hairy".A very interesting special case of the dyonic solution is characterized by three free parameters, the ADM mass and the electric and the magnetic charges. The solutions satisfy the dominant as well as the strong energy condition outside and on the external horizon.
