ADM tetrad gravity is an Hamiltonian reformulation of General Relativity which gives new insight to the Dark Matter Problem. We impose constraints on the parameter space of ADM tetrad gravity with a Yukawa-like ansatz for the trace of the extrinsic curvature of the 3D hypersurfaces by fitting the orbit of the S2 star around the Black Hole in the Galactic center and using the perihelia of some of the planets of the Solar System. We find very thight constraints on the \\emph{strength} of the coupling, $4.2 \\,\\times \\, 10^{-4} \\, \\text{AU}\\,\\lesssim \\, \\delta \\, \\lesssim \\, 4.6 \\, \\times \\, 10^{-4} \\, \\text{AU}$, and an upper limit for the (inverse) scale length, $\\mu \\, \\lesssim \\, 3.5 \\, \\times \\, 10^{-6} \\, \\text{AU}^{-1}$.

The isospin violating dark matter (IVDM) scenario offers an interesting possibility to reconcile conflicting results among direct dark matter search experiments for a mass range around 10 GeV. We consider two simple renormalizable IVDM models with a complex scalar dark matter and a Dirac fermion dark matter, respectively, whose stability is ensured by the conservation of 揹ark matter number. Although both models successfully work as the IVDM scenario with destructive interference between effective couplings to proton and neutron, the dark matter annihilation cross section is found to exceed the cosmological/astrophysical upper bounds. Then, we propose a simple scenario to reconcile the IVDM scenario with the cosmological/astrophysical bounds, namely, the IVDM being asymmetric. We also discuss collider experimental constraints on the models and an implication to Higgs boson physics.

  19. Molecular Structures and Energetics of the (TiO?)n (n = 1-4) Clusters and Their Anions

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Li, Shenggang; Dixon, David A.

    2008-07-24T23:59:59.000Z

The research described in this product was performed in part in the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a national scientific user facility sponsored by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research and located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The (TiO?)n clusters and their anions for n ) 1-4 have been studied with coupled cluster theory [CCSD(T)] and density functional theory (DFT). For n > 1, numerous conformations are located for both the neutral and anionic clusters, and their relative energies are calculated at both the DFT and CCSD(T) levels. The CCSD(T) energies are extrapolated to the complete basis set limit for the monomer and dimer and calculated up to the triple-? level for the trimer and tetramer. The adiabatic and vertical electron detachment energies of the anionic clusters to the ground and first excited states of the neutral clusters are calculated at both levels and compared with the experimental results. The comparison allows for the definitive assignment of the groundstate structures of the anionic clusters. Anions of the dimer and tetramer are found to have very closely lying conformations within 2 kcal/mol at the CCSD(T) level, whereas that of the trimer does not. In addition, accurate clustering energies and heats of formation are calculated for the neutral clusters and compared with the available experimental data. Estimates of the titanium-oxygen bond energies show that they are stronger than the group VIB transition metal-oxygen bonds except for tungsten. The atomization energies of these clusters display much stronger basis set dependence than the clustering energies. This allows the calculation of more accurate heats of formation for larger clusters on the basis of calculated clustering energies.

Organophosphorus (OP) nerve agents such as (S)-sarin are among the most highly toxic compounds that have been synthesized. Engineering enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of nerve agents ( bioscavengers ) is an emerging prophylactic approach to diminishing their toxic effects. Although its native function is not known, diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase) from Loligo vulgaris catalyzes the hydrolysis of OP compounds. Here, we investigate the mechanisms of diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) and (S)-sarin hydrolysis by DFPase with quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) umbrella sampling simulations. We find that the mechanism for hydrolysis of DFP involves nucleophilic attack by Asp229 on phosphorus to form a pentavalent intermediate. P F bond dissociation then yields a phosphoacyl enzyme intermediate in the rate-limiting step. The simulations suggest that a water molecule, coordinated to the catalytic Ca2+, donates a proton to Asp121 and then attacks the tetrahedral phosphoacyl intermediate to liberate the diisopropylphosphate product. In contrast, the calculated free energy barrier for hydrolysis of (S)-sarin by the same mechanism is highly unfavorable, primarily due to the instability of the pentavalent phosphoenzyme species. Instead, simulations suggest that hydrolysis of (S)-sarin proceeds by a mechanism in which Asp229 could activate an intervening water molecule for nucleophilic attack on the substrate. These findings may lead to improved strategies for engineering DFPase and related six-bladed -propeller folds for more efficient degradation of OP compounds.

I propose a sharp form of Thorne's hoop conjecture which relates Birkhoff's invariant $\\beta$ for an outermost apparent horizon to its $ADM$ mass, $ \\beta \\le 4 \\pi M_{ADM}$. I prove the conjecture in the case of collapsing null shells and provide further evidence from exact rotating black hole solutions. Since $\\beta$ is bounded below by the length $l$ of the shortest non-trivial geodesic lying in the apparent horizon, the conjecture implies $l \\le 4 \\pi M_{ADM}$. The Penrose conjecture, $\\sqrt{\\pi A} \\le 4 \\pi M_{ADM}$, and Pu's theorem imply this latter consequence for horizons admitting an antipodal isometry. Quite generally, Penrose's inequality and Berger's isembolic inequality, $\\sqrt{\\pi A} \\ge {2\\over\\sqrt\\pi} i$, where $i$ is the injectivity radius, imply $ 4c \\le 2 i \\le 4 \\pi M_{ADM}$, where $c$ is the convexity radius.

    2015-01-01T23:59:59.000Z

The paper suggests a model to account for the common origins of the asymmetric dark matter (ADM) and matter-antimatter asymmetry. The ADM nature is a stable hadronic particle consisting of a heavy color scalar and a light $u$ quark, which is formed after the QCD phase transition. At the early stage the ADM are in thermal equilibrium through collisions with the nucleons, moreover, they can emit the $\\gamma$ photons with $0.32$ MeV energy. However they are decoupling and become the dark matter at the temperature about $130$ MeV. The mass upper limit of the ADM is predicted as $M_{D}<1207$ GeV. It is feasible and promising to test the model in future experiments.

    2014-12-17T23:59:59.000Z

We describe the canonical phase space of asymptotically flat gravity in Ashtekar-Barbero variables. We show that the Gauss constraint multiplier must fall off slower than previously considered in order to recover ADM phase space. The generators of the asymptotic Poincare group are derived within the Ashtekar-Barbero phase space without reference to the ADM generators. The resulting expressions are shown to agree, modulo Gauss constraint terms, with those obtained from the ADM generators. A payoff of this procedure is a new expression for the generator of asymptotic rotations which is polynomial in the triad and hence better suited for quantum theory. Our treatment complements earlier description by Thiemann in the context of self-dual variables.

In this paper, we calculate the effective gravitational mass of Ay\\'{o}n-Beato and Garc\\'{\\i}a regular (non-singular) static spherically symmetric asymptotically Minkowskian metric that is a solution to Einstein's equations coupled with a nonlinear electromagnetic field. The effective gravitational mass is negative, zero, or positive that depends on the ratio of magnitude of electric charge to the ADM mass and the ratio of the radial distance to the ADM mass. As expected, at large value of radial distance, our result gives effective gravitational mass of the Reissner-Nordstr\\"om metric.

It is shown that observers in the standard ADM 3+1 treatment of matter are the same as the observers used in the matter treatment of Bondi: they are comoving and local Minkowskian. Bondi's observers are the basis of the post--quasitatic approximation (PQSA) to study a contracting distribution of matter. This correspondence suggests the possibility of using the PQSA as a test bed for Numerical Relativity. The treatment of matter by the PQSA and its connection with the ADM 3+1 treatment are presented, for its practical use as a calibration tool and as a test bed for numerical relativistic hydrodynamic codes.

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Fischer, J

    2004-03-15T23:59:59.000Z

This report summarizes the investigation of two active desiccant module (ADM) pilot site installations initiated in 2001. Both pilot installations were retrofits at existing facilities served by conventional heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems that had encountered frequent humidity control, indoor air quality (IAQ), and other operational problems. Each installation involved combining a SEMCO, Inc., ADM (as described in Fischer and Sand 2002) with a standard packaged rooftop unit built by the Trane Company. A direct digital control (DDC) system integral to the ADM performed the dual function of controlling the ADM/rooftop combination and facilitating data collection, trending, and remote performance monitoring. The first installation involved providing preconditioned outdoor air to replace air exhausted from the large kitchen hood and bathrooms of a Hooters restaurant located in Rome, Georgia. This facility had previously added an additional rooftop unit in an attempt to achieve occupant comfort without success. The second involved conditioning the outdoor air delivered to each room of a wing of the Mountain Creek Inn at the Callaway Gardens resort. This hotel, designed in the ''motor lodge'' format with each room opening to the outdoors, is located in southwest Georgia. Controlling the space humidity always presented a serious challenge. Uncomfortable conditions and musty odors had caused many guests to request to move to other areas within the resort. This is the first field demonstration performed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory where significant energy savings, operating cost savings, and dramatically improved indoor environmental conditions can all be claimed as the results of a retrofit desiccant equipment field installation. The ADM/rooftop combination installed at the restaurant resulted in a reduction of about 34% in the electricity used by the building's air-conditioning system. This represents a reduction of approximately 15% in overall electrical energy consumption and a 12.5-kW reduction in peak demand. The cost of gas used for regeneration of the desiccant wheel over this period of time is estimated to be only $740, using a gas cost of $0.50 per therm--the summer rate in 2001. The estimated net savings is $5400 annually, resulting in a 1-2 year payback. It is likely that similar energy/cost savings were realized at the Callaway Gardens hotel. In this installation, however, a central plant supplied the chilled water serving fan coil units in the hotel wing retrofitted with the ADM, so it was not metered separately. Consequently, the owner could not provide actual energy consumption data specific to the facility. The energy and operating cost savings at both sites are directly attributable to higher cooling-season thermostat settings and decreased conventional system run times. These field installations were selected as an immediate and appropriate response to correct indoor humidity and fresh air ventilation problems being experienced by building occupants and owners, so no rigorous baseline-building vs. test-building energy use/operating cost savings results can be presented. The report presents several simulated comparisons between the ADM/roof HVAC approach and other equipment combinations, where both desiccant and conventional systems are modeled to provide comparable fresh air ventilation rates and indoor humidity levels. The results obtained from these simulations demonstrate convincingly the energy and operating cost savings obtainable with this hybrid desiccant/vapor-compression technology, verifying those actually seen at the pilot installations. The ADM approach is less expensive than conventional alternatives providing similar performance and indoor air quality and provides a very favorable payback (1 year or so) compared with oversized rooftop units that cannot be operated effectively with the necessary high outdoor air percentages.

  20. The gravitational Hamiltonian, first order action, Poincar charges and surface terms

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    Alejandro Corichi; Juan D. Reyes

    2015-05-06T23:59:59.000Z

We consider the issue of attaining a consistent Hamiltonian formulation, after a 3+1 splitting, of a well-defined action principle for asymptotically flat gravity. More precisely, our starting point is the gravitational first order Holst action with surface terms and fall-off conditions that make the variational principle and the covariant phase space formulation well-defined for asymptotically flat spacetimes. Keeping all surface terms and paying due attention to subtleties that arise from the different cut-offs at infinity, we give a derivation of the gravitational Hamiltonian starting from this action. The 3+1 decomposition and time gauge fixing results in a well-defined Hamiltonian action and a well-defined Hamiltonian formulation for the standard -and more general- asymptotic ADM conditions. Unlike the case of the Einstein-Hilbert action with Gibbons-Hawking-York or Hawking-Horowitz terms, here we {\\it {do}} recover the ADM energy-momentum from the covariant surface term also when more general variations respecting asymptotic flatness are allowed. Additionally, our strategy yields a derivation of the parity conditions for connection variables independent of the conditions given by Regge and Teitelboim for ADM variables. Finally, we exhibit the other Poincar\\'e generators in terms of real Ashtekar-Barbero variables. We complement previous constructions in self-dual variables by pointing out several subtleties and refining the argument showing that -on shell- they coincide with the ADM charges. Our results represent the first consistent treatment of the Hamiltonian formulation for the connection-tetrad gravitational degrees of freedom, starting from a well posed action, in the case of asymptotically flat boundary conditions.

Expression for the Witten-Nester 4-spinor 3-form of the Hamiltonian density of gravitational field in the asymptotically flat space-time in terms of the Sommers-Sen spinors, direct with a certain orthonormal three-frame connect, is obtained. A direct connection between the one and the ADM Hamiltonian density in the Sen-Witten frame is established on this basis.

We establish the connection between the standard ADM 3+1 treatment of matter with its characteristic equivalent, in the context of spherical symmetry. The flux-conservative rendition of the fluid equations are obtained. Considering adiabatic distributions of perfect fluid, we evolve the system using the so-called post-quasi-static approximation in radiation coordinates. We obtain an adiabatic matter evolution in the quasi-static regime or slow motion, which is not shear-free nor geodesic.

We study nonrelativistic gravity using the Hamiltonian formalism. For the dynamics of general relativity (relativistic gravity) the formalism is well known and called the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. We show that if the lapse function is constrained correctly, then nonrelativistic gravity is described by a consistent Hamiltonian system. Surprisingly, nonrelativistic gravity can have solutions identical to relativistic gravity ones. In particular, (anti-)de Sitter black holes of Einstein gravity and IR limit of Horava gravity are locally identical.

    Broader source: Energy.gov [DOE]

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 spurred investments in smart grid technology and programs at utilities across the country. In 2011, the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE), in partnership with electric utilities that received ARRA funds, convened a series of Regional Smart Grid Peer-to-Peer Workshops. These were designed to bring together utilities to engage in dialogues about the most compelling smart grid topics in each region. In February 2014, OE formed the Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) Working Group by assembling a leadership team of representatives from the utility industry with the mission to collect the experiences, insights, and lessons learned from implementing these systems. This Voices of Experience | Insights into Advanced Distribution Management Systems report is the result of a one-day meeting held at CenterPoint Energy in Houston, Texas, in May 2014 that was followed by a series of conference calls about specific aspects of ADMS, interviews with individuals leading ADMS projects at their utilities, and a final small group meeting at San Diego Gas & Electric in California in October 2014.

  5. The formulation of General Relativity in extended phase space as a way to its quantization

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    T. P. Shestakova

    2009-11-30T23:59:59.000Z

Our attempts to find an explanation for quantum behavior of the Early Universe appeal, as a rule, to the Wheeler - DeWitt Quantum Geometrodynamics which relies upon Hamiltonian formulation of General Relativity proposed by Arnowitt, Deser and Misner (ADM). In spite of the fact that the basic ideas of this approach were put forward about fifty years ago, even now we do not have clear understanding what Hamiltonian formulation of General Relativity must be. An evidence for it gives a recent paper by Kiriushcheva and Kuzmin [arXiv:0809.0097], where the authors claim that the formulation by ADM and that by Dirac made in his seminal work of 1958 are not equivalent. If so, we face the question what formalism should be chosen. Another problem is that we need a well-grounded procedure of constructing a generator of transformations in phase space for all gravitational variables including gauge ones. It suggests the notion of extended phase space. After analyzing the situation, we show that Hamiltonian formulation in extended phase space is a real alternative to Dirac and ADM formulations and can be constructed to be equivalent to the original (Lagrangian) formulation of General Relativity. Quantization in extended phase space is straightforward and leads to a new description of quantum Universe in which an essential place is given to gauge degrees of freedom.

About 50 years ago, in 1958, Dirac published his formulation of generalized Hamiltonian dynamics for gravitation. Several years later Arnowitt, Deser and Misner (ADM) proposed their description of the dynamics of General Relativity which became a basis of the Wheeler - DeWitt Quantum Geometrodynamics. There exist also other works where the Hamiltonian formulation of gravitational theory was discussed. In spite of decades passed from the famous papers by Dirac and ADM, there are unsolved problems. Namely, are the Dirac and ADM formulations equivalent to each other? Are these formulations equivalent to the original (Lagrangian) Einstein theory? Is the group of transformation in phase space the same as the group of gauge transformation of the Einstein theory? What are rules according to which a generator of transformations in phase space should be constructed? Let us mention also another approach based on extended phase space where gauge degrees of freedom are treated on the equal ground with physical degrees of freedom. Our purpose is to review the above questions and to demonstrate advantages of the extended phase space approach by the example of a simple model with finite number degrees of freedom.

We describe a numerical method to construct Cauchy data extending to space-like infinity based on Corvino's (2000) gluing method. Adopting the setting of Giulini and Holzegel (2005), we restrict ourselves here to vacuum axisymmetric spacetimes and glue a Schwarzschildean end to Brill-Lindquist data describing two non-rotating black holes. Our numerical implementation is based on pseudo-spectral methods, and we carry out extensive convergence tests to check the validity of our numerical results. We also investigate the dependence of the total ADM mass on the details of the gluing construction.

3M and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) collaborated with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop and demonstrate a novel membrane solvent extraction (MSE) process that can substantially reduce energy and water consumption in ethanol production, and accelerate the fermentation process. A cross-flow membrane module was developed, using porous membrane manufactured by 3M. A pilot process was developed that integrates fermentation, MSE and vacuum distillation. Extended experiments of 48-72 hours each were conducted to develop the process, verify its performance and begin establishing commercial viability.

With the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian analyses in the ADM setup, it was observed in \\cite{Park:2014tia} that the physical configuration space of the 4D Einstein-Hilbert action admits a three-dimensional description. Subsequently, a more mathematical picture of the reduction based on foliation theory was presented in \\cite{Park:2014qoa}. In this work, we expand \\cite{Park:2014qoa} by adding another mathematical ingredient - an element of jet bundle theory - and present a more systematic and refined account thereof.
