Optimal Portfolio Selection Under Concave Price Impact

SciTech Connect

In this paper we study an optimal portfolio selection problem under instantaneous price impact. Based on some empirical analysis in the literature, we model such impact as a concave function of the trading size when the trading size is small. The price impact can be thought of as either a liquidity cost or a transaction cost, but the concavity nature of the cost leads to some fundamental difference from those in the existing literature. We show that the problem can be reduced to an impulse control problem, but without fixed cost, and that the value function is a viscosity solution to a special type of Quasi-Variational Inequality (QVI). We also prove directly (without using the solution to the QVI) that the optimal strategy exists and more importantly, despite the absence of a fixed cost, it is still in a 'piecewise constant' form, reflecting a more practical perspective.

Convex polytopes and quantum separability

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

We advance a perspective of the entanglement issue that appeals to the Schlienz-Mahler measure [Phys. Rev. A 52, 4396 (1995)]. Related to it, we propose a criterium based on the consideration of convex subsets of quantum states. This criterium generalizes a property of product states to convex subsets (of the set of quantum states) that is able to uncover an interesting geometrical property of the separability property.

Concave Accretion Discs and X-ray Reprocessing

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Spectra of Seyfert Is are commonly modelled as emission from an X-ray illuminated flat accretion disc orbiting a central black hole. This provides both a reprocessed and direct component of the X-ray emission as required by observations of individual objects and possibly a fraction of the cosmological X-ray background. There is some observational motivation to at least consider the role that an effectively concave disc surface might play: (1) a reprocessed fraction $\\gsim 1/2$ in some Seyferts and possibly in the X-ray background, and (2) the commonality of a sharp iron line peak for Seyferts at 6.4KeV despite a dependence of peak location on inclination angle for flat disc models. Here it is shown that a concave disc may not only provide a larger total fraction of reprocessed photons, but can also reprocess a much larger fraction of photons in its outer regions when compared to a flat disc. This reduces the sensitivity of the 6.4KeV peak location to the inner disc inclination angle because the outer regions are less affected by Doppler and gravitational effects. If the X-ray source is isotropic, the reprocessed fraction is directly determined by the concavity. If the X-ray source is anisotropic, the location of iron line peak can still be determined by concavity but the total reflected fraction need not be as large as for the isotropic emitter case. The geometric calculations herein are applicable to general accretion disc systems illuminated from the center.

The heart of a convex body

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We investigate some basic properties of the {\\it heart} $\\heartsuit(\\mathcal{K})$ of a convex set $\\mathcal{K}.$ It is a subset of $\\mathcal{K},$ whose definition is based on mirror reflections of euclidean space, and is a non-local object. The main motivation of our interest for $\\heartsuit(\\mathcal{K})$ is that this gives an estimate of the location of the hot spot in a convex heat conductor with boundary temperature grounded at zero. Here, we investigate on the relation between $\\heartsuit(\\mathcal{K})$ and the mirror symmetries of $\\mathcal{K};$ we show that $\\heartsuit(\\mathcal{K})$ contains many (geometrically and phisically) relevant points of $\\mathcal{K};$ we prove a simple geometrical lower estimate for the diameter of $\\heartsuit(\\mathcal{K});$ we also prove an upper estimate for the area of $\\heartsuit(\\mathcal{K}),$ when $\\mathcal{K}$ is a triangle.

Energetic protons from an ultraintense laser interacting with a symmetric parabolic concave target

SciTech Connect

A scheme of a symmetric parabolic concave target irradiated by an ultraintense laser for efficient proton acceleration is proposed and involved problem is studied by using two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Results indicate that on one hand, the laser field is focused by the front parabolic concave surface of target and, on the other hand, more energetic hot electrons will traverse to the rear surface of target due to concave shape. The space-charge-separation field, induced by those hot electrons escaping form parabolic concave rear surface of target, can accelerate protons to relatively high energy with narrow energy spread. The dependence of the efficiency of proton acceleration on the target parameters is examined, and the optimal target parameters are obtained. Particle-in-cell simulations show that the proton peak energy and energy spread are greatly enhanced when the target parameters are chosen optimal, for example, a proton bunch with the maximum energy {approx}27.5 MeV and energy spread {approx}7% can be generated. Some implications of our results to experiments and comparisons with the other works are also discussed briefly.

Unimodal wave trains and solitons in convex FPU chains

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We consider atomic chains with nearest neighbour interactions and study periodic and homoclinic travelling waves which are called wave trains and solitons, respectively. Our main result is a new existence proof which relies on the constrained maximisation of the potential energy and exploits the invariance properties of an improvement operator. The approach is restricted to convex interaction potentials but refines the standard results as it provides the existence of travelling waves with unimodal and even profile functions. Moreover, we discuss the numerical approximation and complete localization of wave trains, and show that wave trains converge to solitons when the periodicity length tends to infinity.

Quantum Fisher Information as the Convex Roof of Variance

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Quantum Fisher information places the fundamental limit to the accuracy of estimating an unknown parameter. Here we shall provide the quantum Fisher information an operational meaning: a mixed state can be so prepared that a given observable has the minimal averaged variance, which equals exactly to the quantum Fisher information for estimating an unknown parameter generated by the unitary dynamics with the given observable as Hamiltonian. In particular we shall prove that the quantum Fisher information is the convex roof of the variance, as conjectured by Toth and Petz based on numerical and analytical evidences, by constructing explicitly a pure-state ensemble of the given mixed state in which the averaged variance of a given observable equals to the quantum Fisher information.

Computing DOI 10.1007/s00607-012-0241-9 Non-convex systems of sets for numerical analysis

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Abstract The notion of a system of sets generated by a family of functionals is introduced. A generalization of the classical support function of convex subsets of Rd allows to transfer the concept of the convex hull to these systems of sets. Approximation properties of the generalized convex hull and its use for practical computations are investigated.

A Primal-Dual Decomposition Algorithm for Multistage Stochastic Convex Programming

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This paper presents a new and high performance solution method for multistage stochastic convex programming. Stochastic programming is a quantitative tool developed in the field of optimization to cope with the problem of decision-making under uncertainty. Among others, stochastic programming has found many applications in finance, such as asset-liability and bond-portfolio management. However, many stochastic programming applications still remain computationally intractable because of their overwhelming dimensionality. In this paper we propose a new decomposition algorithm for multistage stochastic programming with a convex objective, based on the path-following interior point method combined with the homogeneous self-dual embedding technique. Our preliminary numerical experiments show that this approach is very promising in many ways for solving generic multistage stochastic programming, including its superiority in terms of numerical e#ciency, as well as the flexibility in testing and analyzing the model.

A Simple Geometric Proof That Comonotonic Risks Have the Convex-largest Sum

E-Print Network (OSTI)

In the recent actuarial literature, several proofs have been given for the fact that if a random vector (X 1 ,X 2 ,...,X n ) with given marginals has a comonotonic joint distribution, the sum X 1 +X 2 + X n is the largest possible in convex order. In this note we give a lucid proof of this fact, based on a geometric interpretation of the support of the comonotonic distribution.

Linear Clearing Prices in Non-Convex European Day-Ahead Electricity Markets

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The European power grid can be divided into several market areas where the price of electricity is determined in a day-ahead auction. Market participants can provide continuous hourly bid curves and combinatorial bids with associated quantities given the prices. The goal of our auction is to maximize the economic surplus of all participants subject to transmission constraints and the existence of linear prices. In general strict linear prices do not exist in non-convex markets. Therefore we enforce the existence of linear prices where no one incurs a loss and only combinatorial bids might see a not realized gain. The resulting optimization problem is an MPEC that can not be solved efficiently by a standard solver. We present an exact algorithm and a fast heuristic for this type of problem. Both algorithms decompose the MPEC into a master MIP and price subproblems (LPs). The modeling technique and the algorithms are applicable to all MIP based combinatorial auctions.

Numerical evaluation of convex-roof entanglement measures with applications to spin rings

SciTech Connect

We present two ready-to-use numerical algorithms to evaluate convex-roof extensions of arbitrary pure-state entanglement monotones. Their implementation leaves the user merely with the task of calculating derivatives of the respective pure-state measure. We provide numerical tests of the algorithms and demonstrate their good convergence properties. We further employ them in order to investigate the entanglement in particular few-spins systems at finite temperature. Namely, we consider ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange-coupled spin-(1/2) rings subject to an inhomogeneous in-plane field geometry obeying full rotational symmetry around the axis perpendicular to the ring through its center. We demonstrate that highly entangled states can be obtained in these systems at sufficiently low temperatures and by tuning the strength of a magnetic field configuration to an optimal value which is identified numerically.

Estimating the ground state energy of the Schrödinger equation for convex potentials

E-Print Network (OSTI)

In 2011, the fundamental gap conjecture for Schr\\"odinger operators was proven. This can be used to estimate the ground state energy of the time-independent Schr\\"odinger equation with a convex potential and relative error \\epsilon. Classical deterministic algorithms solving this problem have cost exponential in the number of its degrees of freedom d. We show a quantum algorithm, that is based on a perturbation method, for estimating the ground state energy with relative error \\epsilon. The cost of the algorithm is polynomial in d and \\epsilon^{-1}, while the number of qubits is polynomial in d and \\log\\epsilon^{-1}. In addition, we present an algorithm for preparing a quantum state that overlaps within 1-\\delta, \\delta \\in (0,1), with the ground state eigenvector of the discretized Hamiltonian. This algorithm also approximates the ground state with relative error \\epsilon. The cost of the algorithm is polynomial in d, \\epsilon^{-1} and \\delta^{-1}, while the number of qubits is polynomial in d, \\log\\epsilon^{-1} and \\log\\delta^{-1}.

A forgotten little chapter on isoperimetric inequalities: On the fraction of a convex and closed plane area lying outside a circle with which it shares a diameter

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Often some interesting or simply curious points are left out when developing a theory. It seems that one of them is the existence of an upper bound for the fraction of area of a convex and closed plane area lying outside a circle with which it shares a diameter, a problem stemming from the theory of isoperimetric inequalities. In this paper such a bound is constructed and shown to be attained for a particular area. It is also shown that convexity is a necessary condition in order to avoid the whole area lying outside the circle.

Experimental Validation of a Numerical Controller Using Convex Optimization with Linear Matrix Inequalities on a Quarter-Car Suspension System

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Numerical methods of designing control systems are currently an active area of research. Convex optimization with linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) is one such method. Control objectives like minimizing the H_2, H_infinity norms, limiting the actuating effort to avoid saturation, pole-placement constraints etc., are cast as LMIs and an optimal feedback controller is found by making use of efficient interior-point algorithms. A full-state feedback controller is designed and implemented in this thesis using this method which then forms the basis for designing a static output feedback (SOF) controller. A profile was generated that relates the change in the SOF control gain matrix required to keep the same value of the generalized H_2 norm of the transfer function from the road disturbance to the actuating effort with the change in the sprung mass of the quarter-car system. The quarter-car system makes use of a linear brushless permanent magnet motor (LBPMM) as an actuator, a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) and two accelerometers as sensors for feedback control and forms a platform to test these control methodologies. For the full-state feedback controller a performance measure (H_2 norm of the transfer function from road disturbance to sprung mass acceleration) of 2.166*10^3 m/s^2 was achieved ensuring that actuator saturation did not occur and that all poles had a minimum damping ratio of 0.2. The SOF controller achieved a performance measure of 1.707*10^3 m/s^2 ensuring that actuator saturation does not occur. Experimental and simulation results are provided which demonstrate the effectiveness of the SOF controller for various values of the sprung mass. A reduction in the peak-to-peak velocity by 73 percent, 72 percent, and 71 percent was achieved for a sprung mass of 2.4 kg, 2.8 kg, and 3.4 kg, respectively. For the same values of the sprung mass, a modified lead-lag compensator achieved a reduction of 79 percent, 77 percent and, 69 percent, respectively. A reduction of 76 percent and 54 percent in the peak-to-peak velocity was achieved for a sprung mass of 6.0 kg in simulation by the SOF controller and the modified lead-lag compensator, respectively. The gain of the modified lead-lag compensator needs to be recomputed in order to achieve a similar attenuation as that of the SOF controller when the value of the sprung mass is changed. For a sprung mass of 3.4 kg and a suspension spring stiffness of 1640 N/m the peak-to-peak velocity of the sprung mass was attenuated by 42 percent.

Technology '90

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The US Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories have a long history of excellence in performing research and development in a number of areas, including the basic sciences, applied-energy technology, and weapons-related technology. Although technology transfer has always been an element of DOE and laboratory activities, it has received increasing emphasis in recent years as US industrial competitiveness has eroded and efforts have increased to better utilize the research and development resources the laboratories provide. This document, Technology '90, is the latest in a series that is intended to communicate some of the many opportunities available for US industry and universities to work with the DOE and its laboratories in the vital activity of improving technology transfer to meet national needs. Technology '90 is divided into three sections: Overview, Technologies, and Laboratories. The Overview section describes the activities and accomplishments of the DOE research and development program offices. The Technologies section provides descriptions of new technologies developed at the DOE laboratories. The Laboratories section presents information on the missions, programs, and facilities of each laboratory, along with a name and telephone number of a technology transfer contact for additional information. Separate papers were prepared for appropriate sections of this report.

Fabrication Technology

SciTech Connect

The mission of the Fabrication Technology thrust area is to have an adequate base of manufacturing technology, not necessarily resident at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), to conduct the future business of LLNL. The specific goals continue to be to (1) develop an understanding of fundamental fabrication processes; (2) construct general purpose process models that will have wide applicability; (3) document findings and models in journals; (4) transfer technology to LLNL programs, industry, and colleagues; and (5) develop continuing relationships with the industrial and academic communities to advance the collective understanding of fabrication processes. The strategy to ensure success is changing. For technologies in which they are expert and which will continue to be of future importance to LLNL, they can often attract outside resources both to maintain their expertise by applying it to a specific problem and to help fund further development. A popular vehicle to fund such work is the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with industry. For technologies needing development because of their future critical importance and in which they are not expert, they use internal funding sources. These latter are the topics of the thrust area. Three FY-92 funded projects are discussed in this section. Each project clearly moves the Fabrication Technology thrust area towards the goals outlined above. They have also continued their membership in the North Carolina State University Precision Engineering Center, a multidisciplinary research and graduate program established to provide the new technologies needed by high-technology institutions in the US. As members, they have access to and use of the results of their research projects, many of which parallel the precision engineering efforts at LLNL.

Vacuum Technology

SciTech Connect

The environmental condition called vacuum is created any time the pressure of a gas is reduced compared to atmospheric pressure. On earth we typically create a vacuum by connecting a pump capable of moving gas to a relatively leak free vessel. Through operation of the gas pump the number of gas molecules per unit volume is decreased within the vessel. As soon as one creates a vacuum natural forces (in this case entropy) work to restore equilibrium pressure; the practical effect of this is that gas molecules attempt to enter the evacuated space by any means possible. It is useful to think of vacuum in terms of a gas at a pressure below atmospheric pressure. In even the best vacuum vessels ever created there are approximately 3,500,000 molecules of gas per cubic meter of volume remaining inside the vessel. The lowest pressure environment known is in interstellar space where there are approximately four molecules of gas per cubic meter. Researchers are currently developing vacuum technology components (pumps, gauges, valves, etc.) using micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) technology. Miniature vacuum components and systems will open the possibility for significant savings in energy cost and will open the doors to advances in electronics, manufacturing and semiconductor fabrication. In conclusion, an understanding of the basic principles of vacuum technology as presented in this summary is essential for the successful execution of all projects that involve vacuum technology. Using the principles described above, a practitioner of vacuum technology can design a vacuum system that will achieve the project requirements.

Biomass Technologies

Energy.gov (U.S. Department of Energy (DOE))

There are many types of biomass—organic matter such as plants, residue from agriculture and forestry, and the organic component of municipal and industrial wastes—that can now be used to produce fuels, chemicals, and power. Wood has been used to provide heat for thousands of years. This flexibility has resulted in increased use of biomass technologies. According to the Energy Information Administration, 53% of all renewable energy consumed in the United States was biomass-based in 2007.

TECHNOLOGY ADMINISTRATION

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This report originated in the authors ’ participation in a multi-country study of national innovation systems and their impact on new technology development, sponsored by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Our task was to look at the U.S. national innovation system’s impact on the commercial development of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells for residential power applications. Early drivers of PEM fuel cell innovation were the aerospace and defense programs, in particular the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which used fuel cells on its spacecraft. In the early 1990s, deregulation hit the electric utility industry, which made utilities and entrepreneurs see the potential in generating electricity from distributed power. Throughout the 1990s, the Department of Energy funded a significant portion of civilian fuel cell research, while the Department of Defense and NASA funded more esoteric military and space applications. In 1998, the Department of Commerce’s Advanced Technology Program (ATP) awarded the first of 25 fuel cell projects, as prospects for adoption and commercialization of fuel cell technologies improved.

Technology disrupted

SciTech Connect

Three years ago, the author presented a report on power generation technologies which in summary said 'no technology available today has the potential of becoming transformational or disruptive in the next five to ten years'. In 2006 the company completed another strategic view research report covering the electric power, oil, gas and unconventional energy industries and manufacturing industry. This article summarises the strategic view findings and then revisits some of the scenarios presented in 2003. The cost per megawatt-hour of the alternatives is given for plants ordered in 2005 and then in 2025. The issue of greenhouse gas regulation is dealt with through carbon sequestration and carbon allowances or an equivalent carbon tax. Results reveal substantial variability through nuclear power, hydro, wind, geothermal and biomass remain competitive through every scenario. Greenhouse gas scenario analysis shows coal still be viable, albeit less competitive against nuclear and renewable technologies. A carbon tax or allowance at $24 per metric ton has the same effect on IGCC cost as a sequestration mandate. However, the latter would hurt gas plants much more than a tax or allowance. Sequestering CO{sub 2} from a gas plant is almost as costly per megawatt-hour as for coal. 5 refs., 5 figs., 5 tabs.

This report, and the roadmapping exercise that produced it, is the result of a series of transparent workshops held across the nation. A wealth of information was produced to compliment internal sources like the Energy Information Administration. The active participation of the Department's stakeholders is greatly appreciated. Walter Rosenbusch, Director of the Minerals Management Service (MMS) deserves special recognition. His partnership, participation and input were instrumental to the success of this effort. I also would like to thank my friend Governor Mark White for his participation and support of this effort. In addition, I thank the following workshop chairs and moderators for their participation and contribution to the roadmapping efforts: Mary Jane Wilson, WZI, Inc.; Ron Oligney, Dr. Michael Economides, and Jim Longbottom, University of Houston; John Vasselli, Houston Advanced Research Center; and Art Schroeder, Energy Valley. This report, however, does not represent the end of such long-range planning by the Department, its national labs, and its stakeholders. Rather it is a roadmap for accelerating the journey into the ultradeepwater Western Gulf of Mexico. The development of new technologies and commercialization paths, discoveries by marine biologists, and the fluctuations of international markets will continue to be important influences. Sol-gel processing uses solutions prepared at low temperature rather than high temperature powder processing to make materials with controlled properties. A precursor sol-gel solution (sol) is either poured into a mold and allowed to gel or is diluted and applied to a substrate by spinning, dipping, spraying, electrophoresis, inkjet printing or roll coating. Controlled drying of the wet gel results in either a ceramic or glass bulk part or a thin film on a glass, plastic, ceramic or metal substrate.

CMM Technology

SciTech Connect

This project addressed coordinate measuring machine (CMM) technology and model-based engineering. CMM data analysis and delivery were enhanced through the addition of several machine types to the inspection summary program. CMM hardware and software improvements were made with the purchases of calibration and setup equipment and new model-based software for the creation of inspection programs. Kansas City Plant (KCP) personnel contributed to and influenced the development of dimensional metrology standards. Model-based engineering capabilities were expanded through the development of software for the tolerance analysis of piece parts and for the creation of model-based CMM inspection programs and inspection plans and through the purchase of off-the-shelf software for the tolerance analysis of mechanical assemblies. An obsolete database application used to track jobs in Precision Measurement was replaced by a web-based application with improved query and reporting capabilities. A potential project to address the transformation of the dimensional metrology enterprise at the Kansas City Plant was identified.

SHARED TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER PROGRAM

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The program established a collaborative process with domestic industries for the purpose of sharing Navy-developed technology. Private sector businesses were educated so as to increase their awareness of the vast amount of technologies that are available, with an initial focus on technology applications that are related to the Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Infrastructure Technologies (Hydrogen) Program of the U.S. Department of Energy. Specifically, the project worked to increase industry awareness of the vast technology resources available to them that have been developed with taxpayer funding. NAVSEA-Carderock and the Houston Advanced Research Center teamed with Nicholls State University to catalog NAVSEA-Carderock unclassified technologies, rated the level of readiness of the technologies and established a web based catalog of the technologies. In particular, the catalog contains technology descriptions, including testing summaries and overviews of related presentations.

Technologies Technologies Technologies November 1, 2013 - 11:40am Addthis Distributed energy (DE) technologies consist primarily of energy generation and storage systems placed at or near the point of use. DE provides consumers with greater reliability, adequate power quality, and the possibility to participate in competitive electric power markets. DE also has the potential to mitigate congestion in transmission lines, control price fluctuations, strengthen energy security, and provide greater stability to the electricity grid. The use of DE technologies can lead to lower emissions and, particularly in combined heat and power (CHP) applications, to improved efficiency. Example of a thermally activated energy conversion technology (TAT) -- a type of distributed energy technology. Distributed energy technologies consist primarily of energy generation and storage systems placed at or near the point of use. This gas engine-driven heat pump is operating on a rooftop.

Technology reviews: Lighting systems

SciTech Connect

We present a representative review of existing, emerging, and future technology options in each of five hardware and systems areas in envelope and lighting technologies: lighting systems, glazing systems, shading systems, daylighting optical systems, and dynamic curtain wall systems. The term technology is used here to describe any design choice for energy efficiency, ranging from individual components to more complex systems to general design strategies. The purpose of this task is to characterize lighting system in the state of the art in envelope and lighting technologies in order to identify those with promise for advanced integrated systems, with an emphasis on California commercial buildings. For each technology category, the following activities have been attempted to the extent possible: Identify key performance characteristics and criteria for each technology. Determine the performance range of available technologies. Identify the most promising technologies and promising trends in technology advances. Examine market forces and market trends. Develop a continuously growing in-house database to be used throughout the project. A variety of information sources have been used in these technology characterizations, including miscellaneous periodicals, manufacturer catalogs and cut sheets, other research documents, and data from previous computer simulations. We include these different sources in order to best show the type and variety of data available, however publication here does not imply our guarantee of these data. Within each category, several broad classes are identified, and within each class we examine the generic individual technologies that fall into that class.

Geothermal innovative technologies catalog

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The technology items in this report were selected on the basis of technological readiness and applicability to current technology transfer thrusts. The items include technologies that are considered to be within 2 to 3 years of being transferred. While the catalog does not profess to be entirely complete, it does represent an initial attempt at archiving innovative geothermal technologies with ample room for additions as they occur. The catalog itself is divided into five major functional areas: Exploration; Drilling, Well Completion, and Reservoir Production; Materials and Brine Chemistry; Direct Use; and Economics. Within these major divisions are sub-categories identifying specific types of technological advances: Hardware; Software; Data Base; Process/Procedure; Test Facility; and Handbook.

Technology transfer issue

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Testimony by Lawrence J. Brady, Commerce Assistant Secretary for Trade Administration, at Congressional hearings on the national security issues of technology transfers to the Soviet Union identified steps the US needs to take to deal effectively with the problem. These steps include an understanding of how the Soviet Union has and will benefit militarily by acquiring Western technology and efforts to work with other countries, counterintelligence agencies, and industries to stem the flow of technological information. Brady outlined changes in technology development that complicate the enforcement of transfer rules, and emphasized the importance of a close relationship between the business community and the Commerce Department. Robotics Technology Crosscutting Program. Technology summary

SciTech Connect

The Robotics Technology Development Program (RTDP) is a needs-driven effort. A length series of presentations and discussions at DOE sites considered critical to DOE`s Environmental Restoration and Waste Management (EM) Programs resulted in a clear understanding of needed robotics applications toward resolving definitive problems at the sites. A detailed analysis of the resulting robotics needs assessment revealed several common threads running through the sites: Tank Waste Retrieval (TWR), Contaminant Analysis Automation (CAA), Mixed Waste Operations (MWO), and Decontamination and Dismantlement (D and D). The RTDP Group also realized that some of the technology development in these four areas had common (Cross Cutting-CC) needs, for example, computer control and sensor interface protocols. Further, the OTD approach to the Research, Development, Demonstration, Testing, and Evaluation (RDDT and E) process urged an additional organizational breakdown between short-term (1--3 years) and long-term (3--5 years) efforts (Advanced Technology-AT). These factors lead to the formation of the fifth application area for Crosscutting and Advanced Technology (CC and AT) development. The RTDP is thus organized around these application areas -- TWR, CAA, MWO, D and D, and CC and AT -- with the first four developing short-term applied robotics. An RTDP Five-Year Plan was developed for organizing the Program to meet the needs in these application areas.

Technology Catalogue. First edition

SciTech Connect

The Department of Energy`s Office of Environmental Restoration and Waste Management (EM) is responsible for remediating its contaminated sites and managing its waste inventory in a safe and efficient manner. EM`s Office of Technology Development (OTD) supports applied research and demonstration efforts to develop and transfer innovative, cost-effective technologies to its site clean-up and waste management programs within EM`s Office of Environmental Restoration and Office of Waste Management. The purpose of the Technology Catalogue is to provide performance data on OTD-developed technologies to scientists and engineers assessing and recommending technical solutions within the Department`s clean-up and waste management programs, as well as to industry, other federal and state agencies, and the academic community. OTD`s applied research and demonstration activities are conducted in programs referred to as Integrated Demonstrations (IDs) and Integrated Programs (IPs). The IDs test and evaluate.systems, consisting of coupled technologies, at specific sites to address generic problems, such as the sensing, treatment, and disposal of buried waste containers. The IPs support applied research activities in specific applications areas, such as in situ remediation, efficient separations processes, and site characterization. The Technology Catalogue is a means for communicating the status. of the development of these innovative technologies. The FY93 Technology Catalogue features technologies successfully demonstrated in the field through IDs and sufficiently mature to be used in the near-term. Technologies from the following IDs are featured in the FY93 Technology Catalogue: Buried Waste ID (Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, Idaho); Mixed Waste Landfill ID (Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico); Underground Storage Tank ID (Hanford, Washington); Volatile organic compound (VOC) Arid ID (Richland, Washington); and VOC Non-Arid ID (Savannah River Site, South Carolina).

Solar-thermal technology

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

Solar-thermal technology converts sunlight into thermal energy. It stands alongside other solar technologies including solar-electric and photovoltaic technologies, both of which convert sunlight into electricity. Photovoltaic technology converts by direct conversion, and solar-electric converts by using sunlight`s thermal energy in thermodynamic power cycles. The numerous up-and-running solar energy systems prove solar-thermal technology works. But when is it cost-effective, and how can HVAC engineers and facility owners quickly identify cost-effective applications? This article addresses these questions by guiding the reader through the basics of solar-thermal technology. The first section provides an overview of today`s technology including discussions of collectors and typical systems. The next section presents an easy method for identifying potentially cost-effective applications. This section also identifies sources for obtaining more information on the technology--collector ratings and performance, solar manufacturers, and solar design and analysis tools. The article discusses only those collectors and systems that are most often used. Many others are on the market--the article does not, by omission, mean to infer that one is better than the other.

CRADAs are specifically technology transfer agreements; technologies developed under CRADAs are expected to be transferred to the private sector for commercial exploitation, either by the non-federal partner or another licensee of such technologies. CRADAs were authorized by the Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-480); the authority for government-owned, contractor-operated laboratories such as ORNL to enter into CRADAs was granted by the National Competitiveness Technology Transfer Act of 1989

PRESSURE ACTIVATED SEALANT TECHNOLOGY

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The objective of this project is to develop new, efficient, cost effective methods of internally sealing natural gas pipeline leaks through the application of differential pressure activated sealants. In researching the current state of the art for gas pipeline sealing technologies we concluded that if the project was successful, it appeared that pressure activated sealant technology would provide a cost effective alternative to existing pipeline repair technology. From our analysis of current field data for a 13 year period from 1985 to 1997 we were able to identify 205 leaks that were candidates for pressure activated sealant technology, affirming that pressure activated sealant technology is a viable option to traditional external leak repairs. The data collected included types of defects, areas of defects, pipe sizes and materials, incident and operating pressures, ability of pipeline to be pigged and corrosion states. This data, and subsequent analysis, was utilized as a basis for constructing applicable sealant test modeling.

Robotics Technology Development Program. Technology summary

SciTech Connect

The Robotics Technology Development Program (RTDP) is a ``needs-driven`` effort. A lengthy series of presentations and discussions at DOE sites considered critical to DOE`s Environmental Restoration and Waste Management (EM) Programs resulted in a clear understanding of needed robotics applications toward resolving definitive problems at the sites. A detailed analysis of the Tank Waste Retrieval (TWR), Contaminant Analysis Automation (CAA), Mixed Waste Operations (MWO), and Decontamination & Dismantlement (D&D). The RTDP Group realized that much of the technology development was common (Cross Cutting-CC) to each of these robotics application areas, for example, computer control and sensor interface protocols. Further, the OTD approach to the Research, Development, Demonstration, Testing, and Evaluation (RDDT&E) process urged an additional organizational break-out between short-term (1--3 years) and long-term (3--5 years) efforts (Advanced Technology-AT). The RDTP is thus organized around these application areas -- TWR, CAA, MWO, D&D and CC&AT -- with the first four developing short-term applied robotics. An RTDP Five-Year Plan was developed for organizing the Program to meet the needs in these application areas.

GeoEnergy technology

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The goal of the GeoEnergy Technology Program is to improve the understanding and efficiency of energy extraction and conversion from geologic resources, hence maintaining domestic production capability of fossil energy resources and expanding the usage of geothermal energy. The GeoEnergy Technology Program conducts projects for the Department of Energy in four resource areas--coal, oil and gas, synthetic fuels and geothermal energy. These projects, which are conducted collaboratively with private industry and DOE`s Energy Technology Centers, draw heavily on expertise derived from the nuclear weapons engineering capabilities of Sandia. The primary technologies utilized in the program are instrumentation development and application, geotechnical engineering, drilling and well completions, and chemical and physical process research. Studies in all four resource areas are described.

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

The Geothermal Technology Division of the US Department of Energy is sponsoring two programs related to drilling technology. The first is aimed at development of technology that will lead to reduced costs of drilling, completion, and logging of geothermal wells. This program has the official title ''Hard Rock Penetration Mechanics.'' The second program is intended to share with private industry the cost of development of technology that will result in solutions to the near term geothermal well problems. This program is referred to as the ''Geothermal Drilling Organization''. The Hard Rock Penetration Mechanics Program was funded at $2.65M in FY85 and the GDO was funded at $1.0M in FY85. This paper details the past year's activities and accomplishments and projects the plans for FY86 for these two programs.
