Potts model with invisible colours: Random-cluster representation and Pirogov-Sinai analysis

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We study a variant of the ferromagnetic Potts model, recently introduced by Tamura, Tanaka and Kawashima, consisting of a ferromagnetic interaction among $q$ "visible" colours along with the presence of $r$ non-interacting "invisible" colours. We introduce a random-cluster representation for the model, for which we prove the existence of a first-order transition for any $q>0$, as long as $r$ is large enough. When $q>1$, the low-temperature regime displays a $q$-fold symmetry breaking. The proof involves a Pirogov-Sinai analysis applied to this random-cluster representation of the model.

EXAFS, x-ray diffraction Abstract Mixed metal thin films containing magnesium and a first-row transition element exhibit very large changes in both reflectance and transmittance on exposure to hydrogen gas. Changes in electronic structure and coordination of the magnesium and transition metal atoms during hydrogen absorption were studied using dynamic in situ transmission mode X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Mg K-edge and Ni, Co, and Ti L-edge spectra reflect both reversible and irreversible changes in the metal environments. A significant shift in the nickel L absorption edge shows it to be an active participant in hydride formation. The effect on cobalt and titanium is much less dramatic, suggesting that these metals act primarily as catalysts for formation of magnesium hydride.

Soil surface stabilization using an in situ plutonium coating techniuqe at the Nevada Test Site

SciTech Connect

The Hazardous Waste Remedial Actions Program (HAZWRAP), in collaboration with the University of Nevada at Reno (UNR), has developed and is investigating an in situ plutonium treatment for soils at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The concept, conceived by Dr. T. Tamura and refined at HAZWRAP, was developed during the Nevada Applied Ecology Program investigation. In analyzing for plutonium in soils, it was noted that the alpha emanation of plutonium was greatly attenuated if traces of iron or manganese oxides were present in the final electroplating stage. The technique would reduce resuspension of alpha particles into the air by coating the contaminants in soils in situ with an environmentally compatible, durable, and nontoxic material. The coating materials (calcium hydroxide, ferrous sulfate) reduce resuspension by providing a cementitious barrier against radiation penetration while retaining soil porosity. This technique not only stabilizes plutonium-contaminated soils, but also provides an additional protection from worker exposure to radiation during remediation activities. Additionally, the coating would decrease the water solubility of the contaminant and, thus, reduce its migration through soil and uptake by plants.

Spiral Optimization Algorithm for solving Combined Economic and Emission Dispatch

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract The Spiral Optimization Algorithm (SOA) is an optimization technique developed recently (2011) by K. Tamura and K. Yasuda at Tokyo Metropolitan University-Japan. SOA is a metaheuristic based on an analogy of spiral phenomena in nature and it is simple in concept, few in parameters and easy in implementation. In this paper, SOA is proposed for solving the Combined Economic and Emission Dispatch (CEED) problem. It is aimed, in the CEED problem, that scheduling of generators should operate with both minimum fuel costs and emission levels, simultaneously, while satisfying the load demand and operational constraints. The CEED problem is formulated as a multi-objective problem by considering the fuel cost and emission objectives of generating units. The bi-objective optimization problem is converted into a single objective function using a price penalty factor. The proposed algorithm has been implemented on three test systems with 3, 6, and 40 generating units, with different constraints and various cost curve nature. In order to see the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, its results are compared to those reported in the recent literature. Those results are quite encouraging showing the good applicability of SOA for CEED problem.

LIFTING THE VEIL OF DUST FROM NGC 0959: THE IMPORTANCE OF A PIXEL-BASED TWO-DIMENSIONAL EXTINCTION CORRECTION

SciTech Connect

We present the results of a study of the late-type spiral galaxy NGC 0959, before and after application of the pixel-based dust extinction correction described in Tamura et al. (Paper I). Galaxy Evolution Explorer far-UV, and near-UV, ground-based Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, UBVR, and Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 {mu}m images are studied through pixel color-magnitude diagrams and pixel color-color diagrams (pCCDs). We define groups of pixels based on their distribution in a pCCD of (B - 3.6 {mu}m) versus (FUV - U) colors after extinction correction. In the same pCCD, we trace their locations before the extinction correction was applied. This shows that selecting pixel groups is not meaningful when using colors uncorrected for dust. We also trace the distribution of the pixel groups on a pixel coordinate map of the galaxy. We find that the pixel-based (two-dimensional) extinction correction is crucial for revealing the spatial variations in the dominant stellar population, averaged over each resolution element. Different types and mixtures of stellar populations, and galaxy structures such as a previously unrecognized bar, become readily discernible in the extinction-corrected pCCD and as coherent spatial structures in the pixel coordinate map.

Sun-bleached hair

NLE Websites -- All DOE Office Websites (Extended Search)

Sun-bleached hair Sun-bleached hair Name: Tami Thein, Kelly Frazier, Liz Valente 8 Glen Crest Jr. High Status: N/A Age: N/A Location: N/A Country: N/A Date: N/A Question: Why does some hair change color when exposed to the sun? We checked archives in biology and general science. Replies: This is a good question for a chemist but I'll try and give you a partial answer. Hair contains pigments that are vulnerable to chemical modification by a process called photobleaching. Rearrangements in the pigments molecular structure changes the way light is absorbed and reflected. A similar effect can be caused by chemical bleaching by the hair stylist or from chlorine in a swimming pool by a process called chemical bleaching. The sun may also change the water content of the hair and this can cause subtle color changes by changing the relative density of the color pigments. Try the chemistry board for a more complete answer. Don't let your roots show!
