Investigating High Performance RMA Interfaces for the MPI-3 Standard

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The MPI-2 Standard, released in 1997, defined an interface for one-sided communication, also known as remote memory access (RMA). It was designed with the goal that it should permit efficient implementations on multiple platforms and networking technologies, and also in heterogeneous environments and non-cache-coherent systems. Nonetheless, even 12 years after its existence, the MPI-2 RMA interface remains scarcely used for a number of reasons. This paper discusses the limitations of the MPI-2 RMA specification, outlines the goals and requirements for a new RMA API that would better meet the needs of both users and implementers, and presents a strawman proposal for such an API. We also study the tradeoffs facing the design of this new API and discuss how it may be implemented efficiently on both cache-coherent and non-cache-coherent systems.

Generalizing the ADM Computation to Quantum Field Theory

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The absence of recognizable, low energy quantum gravitational effects requires that some asymptotic series expansion be wonderfully accurate, but the correct expansion might involve logarithms or fractional powers of Newton's constant. That would explain why conventional perturbation theory shows uncontrollable ultraviolet divergences. We explore this possibility in the context of the mass of a charged, gravitating scalar. The classical limit of this system was solved exactly in 1960 by Arnowitt, Deser and Misner, and their solution does exhibit nonanalytic dependence on Newton's constant. We derive an exact functional integral representation for the mass of the quantum field theoretic system, and then develop an alternate expansion for it based on a correct implementation of the method of stationary phase. The new expansion entails adding an infinite class of new diagrams to each order and subtracting them from higher orders. The zeroth order term of the new expansion has the physical interpretation of a first quantized Klein-Gordon scalar which forms a bound state in the gravitational and electromagnetic potentials sourced by its own probability current. We show that such bound states exist and we obtain numerical results for their masses.

Involvement of DNA polymerase beta in repairing oxidative damages induced by antitumor drug adriamycin

SciTech Connect

Adriamycin (ADM) is a widely used antineoplastic drug. However, the increasing cellular resistance has become a serious limitation to ADM clinical application. The most important mechanism related to ADM-induced cell death is oxidative DNA damage mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Base excision repair (BER) is a major pathway in the repair of DNA single strand break (SSB) and oxidized base. In this study, we firstly applied the murine embryo fibroblasts wild-type (pol {beta} +/+) and homozygous pol {beta} null cell (pol {beta} -/-) as a model to investigate ADM DNA-damaging effects and the molecular basis underlying these effects. Here, cellular sensitivity to ADM was examined using colorimetric assay and colony forming assay. ADM-induced cellular ROS level and the alteration of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were measured by commercial kits. Further, DNA strand break, chromosomal damage and gene mutation were assessed by comet assay, micronucleus test and hprt gene mutation assay, respectively. The results showed that pol {beta} -/- cells were more sensitive to ADM compared with pol {beta} +/+ cells and more severe SSB and chromosomal damage as well as higher hprt gene mutation frequency were observed in pol {beta} -/- cells. ROS level in pol {beta} -/- cells increased along with decreased activity of SOD. These results demonstrated that pol {beta} deficiency could enable ROS accumulation with SOD activity decrease, further elevate oxidative DNA damage, and subsequently result in SSB, chromosome cleavage as well as gene mutation, which may be partly responsible for the cytotoxicity of ADM and the hypersensitivity of pol {beta} -/- cells to ADM. These findings suggested that pol {beta} is vital for repairing oxidative damage induced by ADM.

Active Desiccant Dehumidification Module Integration with Rooftop Packaged HVAC

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

This report summarizes a research and development program that produced a stand-alone active desiccant module (ADM) that can be easily integrated with new or existing packaged cooling equipment. The program also produced a fully integrated hybrid system, combining the active desiccant section with a conventional direct expansion air-conditioning unit, that resulted in a compact, low-cost, energy-efficient end product. Based upon the results of this investigation, both systems were determined to be highly viable products for commercialization. Major challenges--including wheel development, compact packaging, regeneration burner development, control optimization, and low-cost design--were all successfully addressed by the final prototypes produced and tested as part of this program. Extensive laboratory testing was completed in the SEMCO laboratory for each of the two ADM system approaches. This testing confirmed the performance of the ADM systems to be attractive compared with that of alternate approaches currently used to precondition outdoor air, where a return air path is not readily available for passive desiccant recovery or where first cost is the primary design criterion. Photographs, schematics, and performance maps are provided for the ADM systems that were developed; and many of the control advantages are discussed. Based upon the positive results of this research and development program, field tests are under way for fully instrumented pilot installations of ADM systems in both a hotel/motel and a restaurant.

Post-quasistatic approximation as a test bed for numerical relativity

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

It is shown that observers in the standard ADM 3+1 treatment of matter are the same as the observers used in the matter treatment of Bondi: they are comoving and local Minkowskian. Bondi's observers are the basis of the post-quasistatic approximation (PQSA) to study a contracting distribution of matter. This correspondence suggests the possibility of using the PQSA as a test bed for numerical relativity. The treatment of matter by the PQSA and its connection with the ADM 3+1 treatment are presented, for its practical use as a calibration tool and as a test bed for numerical relativistic hydrodynamic codes.

Mercury audit at Rocky Mountain Arsenal

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

This report presents the results of an environmental compliance audit to identify potential mercury-containing equipment in 261 building and 197 tanks at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA). The RMA, located near Denver, Colorado, is undergoing clean up and decommissioning by the Department of the Army. Part of the decommissioning procedure is to ensure that all hazardous wastes are properly identified and disposed of. The purpose of the audit was to identify any mercury spills and mercury-containing instrumentation. The audit were conducted from April 7, 1992, through July 16, 1992, by a two-person team. The team interviewed personnel with knowledge of past uses of the buildings and tanks. Information concerning past mercury spills and the locations and types of instrumentation that contain mercury proved to be invaluable for an accurate survey of the arsenal. The team used a Jerome{reg_sign} 431-X{trademark} Mercury Vapor Analyzer to detect spills and confirm locations of mercury vapor. Twelve detections were recorded during the audit and varied from visible mercury spills to slightly elevated readings in the corners of rooms with past spills. The audit also identified instrumentation that contained mercury. All data have been incorporated into a computerized data base that is compatible with the RMA data base.

EPIC Muon Cooling Simulations using COSY INFINITY

SciTech Connect

Next generation magnet systems needed for cooling channels in both neutrino factories and muon colliders will be innovative and complicated. Designing, simulating and optimizing these systems is a challenge. Using COSY INFINITY, a differential algebra-based code, to simulate complicated elements can allow the computation and correction of a variety of higher order effects, such as spherical and chromatic aberrations, that are difficult to address with other simulation tools. As an example, a helical dipole magnet has been implemented and simulated, and the performance of an epicyclic parametric ionization cooling system for muons is studied and compared to simulations made using G4Beamline, a GEANT4 toolkit.

Gas-Phase Diffusion in Porous Media: Comparison of Models Stephen W. Webb

Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)

Gas-Phase Diffusion in Porous Media: Comparison of Models Gas-Phase Diffusion in Porous Media: Comparison of Models Stephen W. Webb Sandia National Laboratories Albuquerque, New Mexico 87 185 ABSTRACT Two models are commonly used to analyze gas- phase diffusion in porous media in the presence of advection, the Advective-Dispersive Model (ADM) and the Dusty-gas Model (DGM). The ADM, which is used in TOUGH2, is based on a simple linear addition of advection calculated by Darcy's law and ordinary diffusion using Fick's law with a porosity- tortuosity-gas saturation multiplier to account for the porous medium. Another approach for gas-phase transport in porous media is the Dusty-Gas Model. This model applies the kinetic theory of gases to the gaseous components and the porous media (or "dust") to combine transport due to diffusion and

Field Demonstration of Active Desiccant Modules Designed to Integrate with Standard Unitary Rooftop Package Equipment - Final Report: Phase 3

SciTech Connect

This report summarizes the investigation of two active desiccant module (ADM) pilot site installations initiated in 2001. Both pilot installations were retrofits at existing facilities served by conventional heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems that had encountered frequent humidity control, indoor air quality (IAQ), and other operational problems. Each installation involved combining a SEMCO, Inc., ADM (as described in Fischer and Sand 2002) with a standard packaged rooftop unit built by the Trane Company. A direct digital control (DDC) system integral to the ADM performed the dual function of controlling the ADM/rooftop combination and facilitating data collection, trending, and remote performance monitoring. The first installation involved providing preconditioned outdoor air to replace air exhausted from the large kitchen hood and bathrooms of a Hooters restaurant located in Rome, Georgia. This facility had previously added an additional rooftop unit in an attempt to achieve occupant comfort without success. The second involved conditioning the outdoor air delivered to each room of a wing of the Mountain Creek Inn at the Callaway Gardens resort. This hotel, designed in the ''motor lodge'' format with each room opening to the outdoors, is located in southwest Georgia. Controlling the space humidity always presented a serious challenge. Uncomfortable conditions and musty odors had caused many guests to request to move to other areas within the resort. This is the first field demonstration performed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory where significant energy savings, operating cost savings, and dramatically improved indoor environmental conditions can all be claimed as the results of a retrofit desiccant equipment field installation. The ADM/rooftop combination installed at the restaurant resulted in a reduction of about 34% in the electricity used by the building's air-conditioning system. This represents a reduction of approximately 15% in overall electrical energy consumption and a 12.5-kW reduction in peak demand. The cost of gas used for regeneration of the desiccant wheel over this period of time is estimated to be only $740, using a gas cost of $0.50 per therm--the summer rate in 2001. The estimated net savings is $5400 annually, resulting in a 1-2 year payback. It is likely that similar energy/cost savings were realized at the Callaway Gardens hotel. In this installation, however, a central plant supplied the chilled water serving fan coil units in the hotel wing retrofitted with the ADM, so it was not metered separately. Consequently, the owner could not provide actual energy consumption data specific to the facility. The energy and operating cost savings at both sites are directly attributable to higher cooling-season thermostat settings and decreased conventional system run times. These field installations were selected as an immediate and appropriate response to correct indoor humidity and fresh air ventilation problems being experienced by building occupants and owners, so no rigorous baseline-building vs. test-building energy use/operating cost savings results can be presented. The report presents several simulated comparisons between the ADM/roof HVAC approach and other equipment combinations, where both desiccant and conventional systems are modeled to provide comparable fresh air ventilation rates and indoor humidity levels. The results obtained from these simulations demonstrate convincingly the energy and operating cost savings obtainable with this hybrid desiccant/vapor-compression technology, verifying those actually seen at the pilot installations. The ADM approach is less expensive than conventional alternatives providing similar performance and indoor air quality and provides a very favorable payback (1 year or so) compared with oversized rooftop units that cannot be operated effectively with the necessary high outdoor air percentages.

A Case Study in Porting Strategy: The Axisymmetric Damage Model

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The axisymmetric damage model (ADM) is one of four micromechanical stress field models developed and maintained by N. J. Pagano's group at the AFRL Materials Directorate, Wright-Patterson AFB. These models serve to establish rigorous field theories to compute accurate stresses and energy release rates for fracture mechanics problems in composite bodies. In turn, these solutions, coupled with experimental research, can establish appropriate failure criteria to be used in the design of composite structures for air and space vehicles. Each of these models is based on Reissner's variational theorem (Reissner, 1950). ADM (Pagano, 1991) is associated with axisymmetric cracking and boundary conditions. Others support fundamentally different cases, i.e. axisymmetric problems incorporating the effects of friction (Tandon and Pagano, 1996), transverse and shear loading and associated cracking patterns in composite cylinders (Pagano and Tandon, 1994), and transverse cracking and delamination pro...

A Quantum Mechanical Model of the Reissner-Nordstrom Black Hole

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We consider a Hamiltonian quantum theory of spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat electrovacuum spacetimes. The physical phase space of such spacetimes is spanned by the mass and the charge parameters $M$ and $Q$ of the Reissner-Nordstrm black hole, together with the corresponding canonical momenta. In this four-dimensional phase space, we perform a canonical transformation such that the resulting configuration variables describe the dynamical properties of Reissner-Nordstrm black holes in a natural manner. The classical Hamiltonian written in terms of these variables and their conjugate momenta is replaced by the corresponding self-adjoint Hamiltonian operator, and an eigenvalue equation for the ADM mass of the hole, from the point of view of a distant observer at rest, is obtained. Our eigenvalue equation implies that the ADM mass and the electric charge spectra of the hole are discrete, and the mass spectrum is bounded below. Moreover, the spectrum of the quantity $M^2-Q^2$ is strictly positive wh...

Is nonrelativistic gravity possible?

SciTech Connect

We study nonrelativistic gravity using the Hamiltonian formalism. For the dynamics of general relativity (relativistic gravity) the formalism is well known and called the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. We show that if the lapse function is constrained correctly, then nonrelativistic gravity is described by a consistent Hamiltonian system. Surprisingly, nonrelativistic gravity can have solutions identical to relativistic gravity ones. In particular, (anti-)de Sitter black holes of Einstein gravity and IR limit of Horava gravity are locally identical.

It is specifically designed to recover useful power from ocean wave energy and to be deployed in large arrays offshore. Unlike all other self-reacting heaving buoys, the WaveBob's natural frequency may be set to match the typical ocean swell (Atlantic 10m, or Pacific 15m), facilitating good energy absorption. It can ride very large waves and still recover useful power. The WaveBob typically carries three or four motor-alternator sets, all or some of which may be entrained, depending on incident wave energy. Built-in redundancy facilitates remote switching and high availability when weather conditions might preclude maintenance visits.
