Submission Guidelines Submission Guidelines "Inside RHIC" is an online publication covering news and views of the RHIC and AGS program at Brookhaven National Laboratory at the level of engineers and students. The RHIC AGS Users Group is sponsoring this effort, and we have tried to cover the breadth of the efforts at RHIC, from physics results to machine and detector development. If you write an article for RHIC News, here's what is needed: The text of the article (a plain ASCII text file is adequate, even preferable, although we can deal with almost any format) The first few sentences (maybe 100 words) should summarize the point

Searching for Global Dimming Evidence at SGP and Searching for Global Dimming Evidence at SGP and Update of ARM Submissions to BSRN G. Hodges Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado Introduction Global dimming, usually defined as a reduction of incoming solar radiation (insolation) at the surface of the earth, is a topic being discussed with increasing frequency. A recent news article on global dimming in the web-based newspaper the Guardian Unlimited seems to have brought this issue to the forefront with scientists and laypeople alike. In fact, there is a special session devoted to global dimming at the upcoming May 17-21 American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting in Montreal, Canada. The article quotes Atsumu Ohmura and references his findings on this subject.

PanDA Pilot Submission using Condor-G: Experience and Improvements

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

PanDA (Production and Distributed Analysis) is the workload management system of the ATLAS experiment, used to run managed production and user analysis jobs on the grid. As a late-binding, pilot-based system, the maintenance of a smooth and steady stream of pilot jobs to all grid sites is critical for PanDA operation. The ATLAS Computing Facility (ACF) at BNL, as the ATLAS Tier1 center in the US, operates the pilot submission systems for the US. This is done using the PanDA 'AutoPilot' scheduler component which submits pilot jobs via Condor-G, a grid job scheduling system developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In this paper, we discuss the operation and performance of the Condor-G pilot submission at BNL, with emphasis on the challenges and issues encountered in the real grid production environment. With the close collaboration of Condor and PanDA teams, the scalability and stability of the overall system has been greatly improved over the last year. We review improvements made to Condor-G resulting from this collaboration, including isolation of site-based issues by running a separate Gridmanager for each remote site, introduction of the 'Nonessential' job attribute to allow Condor to optimize its behavior for the specific character of pilot jobs, better understanding and handling of the Gridmonitor process, as well as better scheduling in the PanDA pilot scheduler component. We will also cover the monitoring of the health of the system.

Until recently, such detailed measurements were only possible during heating by injection of neutral beams of atoms. These beams imparted significant momentum to the plasmas and masked the underlying behavior. Plasma rotation is important because it has the potential to stabilize small and large-scale instabilities. However reactor-scale devices

Sokolov Russian Federal Nuclear Center - All-Russia Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF), 607190 Sarov, Mira- 37, Russia Summary: This paper describes a phenomenological model of dynamic fracture kinetics including plastic pore growth and plastic fracture damage. Introduction The problem of fracture is critical for the development of structures that undergo intense pulsed loading during operation. Dynamic strain of elastoplastic materials may cause a large number of microdefects of different types. Separate numerical description of each microdefect when considering pulsed loading of a real full-size structure is quite a complex problem. The complexity of the problem is that fracture

ABSTRACT Traditional energy performance calculated using building simulation with the typical meteorological year (TMY) weather data represents the energy performance in a typical year but not necessarily the average or typical energy performance of a building in long term. Furthermore, the simulated results do not provide the range of variations due to the change of weather, which is important in building energy management and risk assessment of energy

EFCOG Best Practice Submission - Guidance for Retro-Commissioning

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Commissioning is slowly becoming an accepted quality method for ensuring that buildings are designed, constructed, and operated as required by the building owner and as intended by the original design. Retro-commissioning is a process, using commissioning concepts, to ensure that existing buildings are operated and maintained as required by the owner to meet the buildings current mission. Retro-commissioning further seeks to incorporate new equipment and operating practices to upgrade existing facilities to obtain increased efficiency and employee comfort and productivity. Retro-commissioning practices are not universal. Best practices have been identified to assist Federal organizations with the development of retro-commissioning programs and to help DOE sites to begin this quality related process.

Submission of Final Scientific/Technical Report [Solar Avoided Cost Solution: SunShot 6 Final Report

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The core objectives of this project were two separate but integrated products, collectively providing game-changing Avoided Cost capabilities. The first was a kit of avoided cost tools and data that any solar provider can use a-lacarte or as a whole. Its open and easily accessible nature allows the rapid and accurate calculation of avoided cost in whatever context and software that make sense (Typical and Avoided Cost Tools). This kit includes a dataset of typical energy rates, costs and usage that can be used for solar prospecting, lead generation and any situation where data about an opportunity is missing or imperfect. The second is a web application and related APIs specifically built for solar providers to radically streamline their lead-to-sale process (Solar Provider Module). The typical and Avoided Cost tools are built directly into this, and allow for solar providers to track their opportunities, collaborate with their installers and financiers, and close more sales faster.

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

During TVA's visit and survey of RMA's GB facility, sample points were identified (Table A-1). The sample points initially identified were from Buildings 1501, 1503, 1603, 1506, 1601, 1601A, and 1602. Piping isometrics were produced for each sample point identified and are shown in Appendix B. After a careful review of each sample point and discussions with RMA personnel, 67 of the original sample points were eliminated. The sample points eliminated consisted of all ventilation points and process equipment/piping that is open to the atmosphere.

Recovery Act: Geothermal Data Aggregation: Submission of Information into the National Geothermal Data System, Final Report DOE Project DE-EE0002852 June 24, 2014

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) is a Department of Energy funded effort to create a single cataloged source for a variety of geothermal information through a distributed network of databases made available via web services. The NGDS will help identify regions suitable for potential development and further scientific data collection and analysis of geothermal resources as a source for clean, renewable energy. A key NGDS repository or node is located at Southern Methodist University developed by a consortium made up of: SMU Geothermal Laboratory Siemens Corporate Technology, a division of Siemens Corporation Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin Cornell Energy Institute, Cornell University Geothermal Resources Council MLKay Technologies Texas Tech University University of North Dakota. The focus of resources and research encompass the United States with particular emphasis on the Gulf Coast (on and off shore), the Great Plains, and the Eastern U.S. The data collection includes the thermal, geological and geophysical characteristics of these area resources. Types of data include, but are not limited to, temperature, heat flow, thermal conductivity, radiogenic heat production, porosity, permeability, geological structure, core geophysical logs, well tests, estimated reservoir volume, in situ stress, oil and gas well fluid chemistry, oil and gas well information, and conventional and enhanced geothermal system related resources. Libraries of publications and reports are combined into a unified, accessible, catalog with links for downloading non-copyrighted items. Field notes, individual temperature logs, site maps and related resources are included to increase data collection knowledge. Additional research based on legacy data to improve quality increases our understanding of the local and regional geology and geothermal characteristics. The software to enable the integration, analysis, and dissemination of this teams NGDS contributions was developed by Siemens Corporate Technology. The SMU Node interactive application is accessible at http://geothermal.smu.edu. Additionally, files may be downloaded from either http://geothermal.smu.edu:9000/geoserver/web/ or through http://geothermal.smu.edu/static/DownloadFilesButtonPage.htm. The Geothermal Resources Council Library is available at https://www.geothermal-library.org/.

Peculiar features of InGaAsP DH superluminescent diodes

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Experimental results of 1.3 /mu/m proton-implanted BH superluminescent diodes (SLD's) and investigations of dominant physical trends in their behavior are reported here. Proton implantation of part of the stripe near the back facet is used to prevent oscillations due to residual reflections. Gain and losses predictions from the two regions (the active and the passive waveguides) show that the absorption edge is not as sharp as expected and that a parabolic band model would not adequate in that particular case. The examination of the noise (RIN) from front and back facets provides an amazing result: related to the spectrum, the RIN carried by the radiation coming from the rear facet is much higher than the RIN carried by the front facet radiation.
