Renormalization group invariance in the Pinch Technique

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We show how to construct, using an elementary extension of the Pinch Technique, all off-shell Green's functions of a non-Abelian gauge theory so that they are locally gauge-invariant and renormalization-group invariant (RGI), as the S-matrix is, as well as being process-independent, coupling-constant independent (dimensional transmutation), and satisfying QED-like Ward identities. We call these PT-RGI Green's functions and outline how to construct an approximate three-gluon PT-RGI vertex with three physical scales and no dependence on the renormalization point $\\mu$. Properties of the PT-RGI Schwinger-Dyson equations are discussed, mostly in the context of a modified form of $\\phi^3_6$. The PT-RGI property of all off-shell Green's functions, plus other work of long ago, leads to a near-realization of the old dreams of S-matrix theorists.

Life Cycle Management Planning at Wolf Creek Generating Station: EDG, Main Steam, and Feedwater Isolation Valves, and Reactor Protec tion System

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

As the electric power industry becomes more competitive, life cycle management (LCM) of systems, structures, and components (SSCs) becomes very important to keep plants economically viable throughout their remaining licensed operating terms (either 40-year or 60-year terms). This report provides the industry with lessons learned from applying EPRI's LCM planning process to three SSCs at Wolf Creek Generating Station.

Materials Reliability Program: Testing and Evaluation of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steel Plate Heat JRQ to Assess Through-Wall Attenua tion of Radiation Embrittlement (MRP-243)

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The change in neutron energy spectrum through the wall of a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) requires the use of an exposure parameter or metric for assessing radiation embrittlement. This report looks at experimental fracture toughness and Charpy V-notch (CVN) data generated in a special International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experiment designed to simulate an RPV wall of 190 mm thickness. These experimental data are compared with the current exposure metric of displacements per atom (dpa) coupled with ...

This report contains information and examples of best practices for the design and specification of wet and parallel (hybrid) cooling towers for combined-cycle applications. Two reference (template) specifications are includedone for totally wet cooling systems and one for parallel cooling systems with a wet cooling tower and air-cooled condensers (ACC) in parallel. These template specifications are intended to be the starting point from which the utility or developer can "customize" as needed to fit its...

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Incidences of cracking in some earlier design European PWRs have demonstrated that the reactor vessel internals bolting may be susceptible to age-related degradation. The primary cracking mechanism is likely irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC). This report describes an innovative bolt inspection and replacement program developed by Westinghouse two-loop plant owners and Framatome Technologies to address the aging problem.

Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update (EIA)

Theresa Theresa E. Hallquist Introduction The Petroleum Division (PD) of the Energy Informa- tion Administration (EIA) collects information relating to petroleum market prices and volumes on the EIA-782 survey. One way PD assesses the quality of these data is to compare the data with other sources. Large, irreconcilable differences among data series could indicate the need for improvement in survey de- sign or implementation, or may be due to conceptual differences. For more detailed information on the EIA-782 survey, refer to the notes at the end of this arti- cle. PD compares its EIA-782 series of petroleum market prices and volumes with both internal and external data sources on an ongoing basis. The sources include: * The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for retail prices of motor gasoline and No. 2 fuel oil * Form EIA-821, "Annual Fuel Oil and Kerosene

This accelerator- based facility provides the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world. Scien- tists are able to count scattered neutrons, measure their energies and the angles at which they scatter, and map their final positions. SNS enables measurements of greater sensitivity, higher speed, higher resolution, and in more complex sample environments than have been possible at existing neutron facilities. Oligogalacturonides induce flowers in tobacco thin cell layers

SciTech Connect

An optimized tobacco thin-cell-layer (TCL) bioassay was used to study the induction of flowers by plant oligosaccharins. Endopolygalacturonase (EPG)-released fragments of suspension-cultured sycamore cell walls induced flowers on TCLs grown on a medium containing 1.5 {mu}M IBA and 0.9 {mu}M kinetin. The EPG-released fragments were primarily composed of the polysaccharides rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I), rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II), and {alpha}-1,4-linked oligogalacturonides. The {alpha}-1,4-linked oligogalacturonides, subsequently purified from the EPG-released sycamore cell wall fragment mixture, induced flowers on TCLs. Purified RG-I and RG-II did not induce flowers. Oligosaccharide fragments, generated by partial acid hydrolysis of citrus pectin, were also capable of inducing flowers on the TCLs. The active components in the pectin fragment mixture were {alpha}-1,4-linked oligogalacturonides. Oligogalacturonides with a degree of polymerization (DP) of 8-16, at concentrations of {approx} 0.1 {mu}M, induced flowers, while oligogalacturonides with a DP 2-7, even at higher concentrations, did not. Oligogalacturonides have previously been shown to induce the synthesis of phytoalexins, protease inhibitors, lignin, and ethylene in other plant systems. Thus, the ability of {alpha}-1,4-linked oligogalacturonides to induce flower formation in the tobacco TCLs represents a new biological activity of these oligosaccharins.

EPIC Muon Cooling Simulations using COSY INFINITY

SciTech Connect

Next generation magnet systems needed for cooling channels in both neutrino factories and muon colliders will be innovative and complicated. Designing, simulating and optimizing these systems is a challenge. Using COSY INFINITY, a differential algebra-based code, to simulate complicated elements can allow the computation and correction of a variety of higher order effects, such as spherical and chromatic aberrations, that are difficult to address with other simulation tools. As an example, a helical dipole magnet has been implemented and simulated, and the performance of an epicyclic parametric ionization cooling system for muons is studied and compared to simulations made using G4Beamline, a GEANT4 toolkit.
