On rack polynomials

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We study rack polynomials and the link invariants they define. We show that constant action racks are classified by their generalized rack polynomials and show that $ns^at^a$-quandles are not classified by their generalized quandle polynomials. We use subrack polynomials to define enhanced rack counting invariants, generalizing the quandle polynomial invariants.

LIE n-RACKS

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Kinyon showed that the tangent space of a Lie Rack at the neutral element has a Leibniz algebra structure. This provided a promising lead towards solving the Coquecigrue problem for Leibniz algebras. In this paper, we introduce the category of Lie $n$-racks and generalize several results known on racks. In particular, we generalize Kinyon's result to Leibniz $n$-algebras.

Truck loading rack blending

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Blending, the combining of two or more components to make a single product, has become widely used in most loading rack applications. Blending should not be confused with additive injection, which is the injection of very small doses of enhancers, detergents and dyes into a product stream. Changes in the environmental protection laws in the early 90`s have put increasing demands on marketing terminals with regards to reformulated fuels and environmental protection concerns. As a result of these new mandates, terminals have turned to blending at the loading rack as an economical and convenient means in meeting these new requirements. This paper will discuss some of these mandates and how loading rack blending is used for different applications. Various types of blending will also be discussed along with considerations for each method.

Boraflex rack management

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Boraflex degradation events have been reported at Palisades, Fort Calhoun, and South Texas. Analysis of these events and research by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) indicates that degradation is related to radiation dose and water ingress. Utilities with Boraflex are now trying to determine strategies to deal with the issue. From a safety standpoint, the issue is less significant for pressurized water reactors because large amounts of soluble boron are present in the pool. While little can be done to change water ingress, utilities can manage the radiation dose to the Boraflex through Boraflex {open_quotes}rack management.{close_quotes} In practice, this amounts to optimizing Boraflex cell usage to extend the useful life of the spent-fuel pool rack. Effective Boraflex cell optimization typically involves analysis of spent-fuel pool design, historical usage data, and radiation dose assessment. Analysis of the Diablo Canyon power plant (DCPP) spent-fuel pool rack is discussed in this paper.

Link invariants from finite racks

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We define ambient isotopy invariants of oriented knots and links using the counting invariants of framed links defined by finite racks. These invariants reduce to the usual quandle counting invariant when the rack in question is a quandle. We are able to further enhance these counting invariants with 2-cocycles from the coloring rack's second rack cohomology satisfying a new degeneracy condition which reduces to the usual case for quandles.

HOTLink rack monitor

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

A remote data acquisition chassis, called a HOTLink Rack Monitor, HRM, has been developed for use in the Fermilab control system. This chassis provides for 64 analog input channels, 8 analog output channels, and 8 bytes of digital I/O. The interface to the host VMEbus crate is by way of a 320 MHz HOTLink serial connection to a PMC mezzanine module. With no processor intervention, all data sources in the remote chassis are read at 100 sec intervals, time stamped, and stored in a 2 MB circular buffer on the PMC module. In operation, the memory always contains the most recent 16 k samples of 10 kHz data from all 64 analog input channels. An expansion module that resides in the HRM chassis records snapshot data for 8 analog channels, each channel consisting of up to 16 k readings, digitized at rates up to 10 MHz. Snapshot data is also returned and stored in buffers on the PMC module. Because the HRM presents a memory-mapped interface to the host, it is independent of the operating system and may be used in any system that supports PMC mezzanine modules.

Enumerating finite racks, quandles and kei

E-Print Network [OSTI]

A rack of order $n$ is a binary operation $\\rack$ on a set $X$ of cardinality $n$, such that right multiplication is an automorphism. More precisely, $(X,\\rack)$ is a rack provided that the map $x\\mapsto x\\rack y$ is a bijection for all $y\\in X$, and $(x\\rack y)\\rack z=(x\\rack z)\\rack (y\\rack z)$ for all $x,y,z\\in X$. The paper provides upper and lower bounds of the form $2^{cn^2}$ on the number of isomorphism classes of racks of order $n$. Similar results on the number of isomorphism classes of quandles and kei are obtained. The results of the paper are established by first showing how an arbitrary rack is related to its operator group (the permutation group on $X$ generated by the maps $x\\mapsto x\\rack y$ for $y\\in Y$), and then applying some of the theory of permutation groups. The relationship between a rack and its operator group extends results of Joyce and of Ryder; this relationship might be of independent interest.

On Nichols algebras associated to simple racks

E-Print Network [OSTI]

This is a report on the present state of the problem of determining the dimension of the Nichols algebra associated to a rack and a cocycle. This is relevant for the classification of finite-dimensional complex pointed Hopf algebras whose group of group-likes is non-abelian. We deal mainly with simple racks. We recall the notion of rack of type D, collect the known lists of simple racks of type D and include preliminary results for the open cases. This notion is important because the Nichols algebra associated to a rack of type D and any cocycle has infinite dimension. For those racks not of type D, the computation of the cohomology groups is needed. We discuss some techniques for this problem and compute explicitly the cohomology groups corresponding to some conjugacy classes in symmetric or alternating groups of low order.

A note on conjugacy search and racks

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We show that for every effective left conjugacy closed left quasigroup, there is an induced rack that retains the conjugation structure of the left translations. This means that cryptographic protocols relying on conjugacy search can be secure only if conjugacy search of left translations is infeasible in the induced rack. We note that, in fact, protocols based on conjugacy search could be simply implemented using a rack. We give an exposition of the Anshel-Anshel-Goldfeld protocol in such a case.

Noncontact rack-pinion-rack device as a differential vibration sensor

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

We study a nanoscale system composed of one corrugated cylinder (pinion) placed between two corrugated plates (racks). The pinion and racks have no mechanical contact, but are coupled via the lateral Casimir forceone of the most spectacular consequences of quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. The noncontact design of the device could help with the noteworthy wear problem in nanoscale mechanical systems. We consider the case where both racks undergo harmonic lateral motion. We assume that the amplitude, frequency, and phase of one of the racks are known. We show that probing the pinion motion, one can determine the vibration characteristics of the other rack.

N-Degeneracy in rack homology and link invariants

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We consider rack homology for racks with rack rank N>1. For such racks, we prove that N-degenerate chains form a sub-complex of the classical complex defining rack homology. This allows a homology theory analogous to quandle homology for non-quandle racks with finite ranks. If our rack has rack rank N=1 then it is a quandle and the homology theory coincides with the CKJLS homology theory. We use nontrivial cocycles to define invariants of knots and provide examples of calculations for knots up to 8 crossings and links up to 7 crossings.

Rack homology and conjectural Leibniz homology.

E-Print Network [OSTI]

This article presents results being consistent with conjectures of J.-L. Loday about the existence and properties of a Leibniz homology for groups. Introducing L-sets we prove that (pointed) rack homology has properties this conjectural Leibniz homology should satisfy, namely the existence of a coZinbiel coalgebra structure on rack homology and the existence of a non trivial natural cocommutative coalgebra morphism from the rack homology of a group to its Eilenberg-MacLane homology. The end of the paper treats the particular cases of the linear group and of abelian groups. We prove the existence of a connected coZinbiel-associative bialgebra structure on their rack homology.

Furniture Rack Corrosion Coupon Surveillance - 2012 Update

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Under the L Basin corrosion surveillance program furniture rack coupons immersed for 14 years (FY2009 coupons) and 16 years (FY2011 coupons) were analyzed and the results trended with coupons exposed for shorter times. In addition, a section harvested from an actual furniture rack that was immersed for 14 years was analyzed for pitting in the weld and heat-affected-zone (HAZ) regions. The L Basin operations maintained very good water quality over the entire immersion period for these samples. These results for FY2009 and FY2011 coupons showed that the average pit depths for the 6061 and 6063 base metal are 1 and 2 mils, respectively, while those for the weld and HAZ are 3 and 4 mils, respectively. The results for the weld and HAZ regions are similar to coupons removed during the period of FY2003 to FY2007. These similarities indicate that the pit development occurred quickly followed by slow kinetics of increase in pit depth. For the actual furniture rack sample average pits of 5 and 2 mils were measured for the HAZ and weld, respectively. These results demonstrate that pitting corrosion of the aluminum furniture racks used to support the spent fuel occurs in waters of good quality. The corrosion kinetics or pit depth growth rate is much less that 1 mil/year, and would not impact long-term use of this material system for fuel storage racks in L Basin if good water quality is maintained.

A sweep-off gear is pivotably mounted in front of a slide of the machine at a level above the rack. The sweep-off gear has a sweep-off surface which is inclined both with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rack and the horizontal surface of the rack teeth for sweepingoff bodies from the rack onto the conveyor. Nozzles are provided on the gear for washing the rack with a water stream under pressure at an angle with respect to the surface of the rack.

Yang-Baxter deformations and rack cohomology

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Every rack $Q$ provides a set-theoretic solution $c_Q$ of the Yang-Baxter equation. This article examines the deformation theory of $c_Q$ within the space of Yang-Baxter operators over a ring $\\A$, a problem initiated by Freyd and Yetter in 1989. As our main result we classify deformations in the modular case, which had previously been left in suspense, and establish that every deformation of $c_Q$ is gauge-equivalent to a quasi-diagonal one. Stated informally, in a quasi-diagonal deformation only behaviourally equivalent elements interact. In the extreme case, where all elements of $Q$ are behaviourally distinct, Yang-Baxter cohomology thus collapses to its diagonal part, which we identify with rack cohomology. The latter has been intensively studied in recent years and, in the modular case, is known to produce non-trivial and topologically interesting Yang-Baxter deformations.

Dynamics of noncontact rack-and-pinion device: Periodic back-and-forth motion of the rack

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

We study a nanoscale system composed of one corrugated cylinder (pinion) and one corrugated plate (rack). The pinion and rack have no mechanical contact, but are coupled via the lateral Casimir force. We consider the case where the rack position versus time is a periodic triangular signal. We find that the device can rectify the periodic but nonsinusoidal motion of the rack. Using the typical values of parameters, we find that the pinion rotates with an average angular velocity ?=1?100?Hz. Experimental observation of the pinion rotation will show that the quantum vacuum can intermesh the noncontact parts of nanomachines.

Evaluating SDN based Rack-to-Rack Multi-path Switching for Data-center Networks

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Software defined networking becomes more and more popular in the networking community, but is still missing its triumphal procession into existing networks. Especially data-centers could benefit from this evolutionary network paradigm and get rid of many legacy parts with are still blocking the evolution how their networks are working in general. In this paper we will present an approach, use-case and performance evaluation as well, for the integration of software defined networking applications in data-centers. This approach addresses a sub topic or more precisely a single software defined networking application for enhancing inter rack communication by involving the top-of-rack and aggregation switches in a common fat-tree network topology. The basic aim is to provide some sort of load distribution mechanism on the afore mentioned network layers by using a flow based load sharing procedure with layer two multi-path. The evaluation will show that this is increasing the throughput in a rack-to-rack data exchange scenario.

Preloaded compliant linkage for fuel injection pump rack

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This patent describes in a fuel injection pump system for an internal combustion engine. The improvement comprising: a compliant linkage in the pump rack means positioned between a first portion of the pump rack means engaged by the gear and a second portion thereof which is connected to the plunger means. The linkage comprising a precompressed spring urging the first and second portions of the pump rack means apart from each other with a force greater than the value of load forces acting on the rack means during normal operation in the absence of abnormally strong transient load forces, but less than the driving force produced by the stepper output shaft; whereby the spring remains in its normal precompressed state during normal operation; is additionally compressed when transient load forces occur so as to permit continue normal operation of the gear even though the second portion of the rack means is arrested; and returns to its normal precompressed state when the transient local forces disappear, thus permitting the second portion of the pump rack means to assume its proper controlled position. Herein the first portion of the rack means is pivotable about an axis normal to the length of the pump rack means and is biased toward the gear by a spring.

Nonlinear dynamics of a rack-pinion-rack device powered by the Casimir force

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Using the lateral Casimir forcea manifestation of the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field between objects with corrugated surfacesas the main force transduction mechanism, a nanomechanical device with rich dynamical behaviors is proposed. The device is made of two parallel racks that are moving in the same direction and a pinion in the middle that couples with both racks via the noncontact lateral Casimir force. The built-in frustration in the device causes it to be very sensitive and react dramatically to minute changes in the geometrical parameters and initial conditions of the system. The noncontact nature of the proposed device could help with the ubiquitous wear problem in nanoscale mechanical systems.

Performance of a Rack of Liquid-Cooled Servers

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Electronics densification is continuing at an unrelenting pace at the server, rack, and facility level. With increasing facility density levels, air flow management has become a major challenge and concern. In an effort to deal with the resulting thermal management challenges, manufacturers are increasingly turning to liquid-cooling as a practical solution. The majority of manufacturers have turned to liquid-cooled enclosed racks, or rear door heat exchangers, in which chilled water is delivered to the racks. Some manufacturers are now looking to cold plate cooling solutions that take the heat directly off problem components such as the CPUs, and to get it directly out of the facility. The current paper describes work done at the Pacific Northwest National Labs (PNNL) under a Department of Energy funded program entitled Energy Smart Data Center. An 8.2 kW rack of HP rx2600 2U servers has been converted from air-cooling to liquid spray cooling (CPUs only). The rack has been integrated into PNNLs main cluster and subjected to a suite of acceptance tests. Under the testing, the spray cooled CPUs ran an average of 10C cooler than the air-cooled CPUs. Other peripheral devices such as the memory DIMMs ran an average of 8C cooler, and the power pod board was measured at 15C cooler. Since installation in July, 2005, the rack has been undergoing a one year uptime and reliability investigation. As part of the investigation, the rack has been subjected to monthly robustness testing and ongoing performance evaluation while running applications such as High Performance Linpack, parts of the NASA NPB-2 Benchmark Suite, and NWChem. The rack has undergone 3 months worth of robustness testing with no major events. Including the robustness testing, the rack uptime is at 95.54% over 299 days. While undergoing application testing, no computational performance differences have been observed between the liquid-cooled and standard air-cooled racks. A miniature Spray Cooled Energy Smart Data Center is now being designed as a final step to demonstrate the feasibility of scaling liquid-cooling at the single rack up to an entire facility.

Evaluation of strain levels in the IFSF rack

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

An evaluation has been performed on strain levels determined for the IFSF fuel storage rack for seismic loading. The storage rack had been previously analyzed by a consulting company, Advanced Engineering Consultants (AEC), who reported significant strain levels in several members of the rack. The purpose for the study conducted herein was to refine the method for calculating strain levels, and then to assess the acceptability of the refined strain values. This was accomplished by making a modification to AEC`s model to more realistically represent plastic behavior in all locations where material yields. An analysis was performed where this modified model was subjected to the same seismic loadings as applied in AEC`s analysis. It was expected that the more realistic representation of plastic behavior in the modified model would result in reduced maximum calculated strains for the rack. Results of the analysis showed that the more realistic representation of plastic behavior in rack members did reduce the calculated maximum strains from those reported by AEC. These modified strains were evaluated for acceptability according to ductility criteria of the governing standard (i.e. ANSI/AISC N690-1994, as specified by the project Criteria Application Document). This evaluation showed that the strains meet these acceptance criteria. The analysis described herein was performed only to investigate this issue. AEC`s analysis stands as the analysis of record for the rack.

Involvement of Arabidopsis RACK1 in Protein Translation and Its Regulation by Abscisic Acid

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Earlier studies have shown that RACK1 functions as a negative regulator of ABA responses in Arabidopsis, but the molecular mechanism of the action of RACK1 in these processes remains elusive. Global gene expression profiling revealed that approximately 40% of the genes affected by ABA treatment were affected in a similar manner by the rack1 mutation, supporting the view that RACK1 is an important regulator of ABA responses. On the other hand, co-expression analysis revealed that >80% of the genes co-expressed with RACK1 encode ribosome proteins, implying a close relationship between RACK1 s function and the ribosome complex. These results implied that the regulatory role for RACK1 in ABA responses may be partially due to its putative function in protein translation, which is one of the major cellular processes that mammalian and yeast RACK1 is involved in. Consistently, all three Arabidopsis RACK1 homologous genes, namely RACK1A, RACK1B and RACK1C, complemented the growth defects of the S. cerevisiae cpc2/rack1 mutant. In addition, RACK1 physically interacts with Arabidopsis Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 6 (eIF6), whose mammalian homologue is a key regulator of 80S ribosome assembly. Moreover, rack1 mutants displayed hypersensitivity to anisomycin, an inhibitor of protein translation, and displayed characteristics of impaired 80S functional ribosome assembly and 60S ribosomal subunit biogenesis in a ribosome profiling assay. Gene expression analysis revealed that ABA inhibits the expression of both RACK1 and eIF6. Taken together, these results suggest that RACK1 may be required for normal production of 60S and 80S ribosomes and that its action in these processes may be regulated by ABA.

Rack-and-pinion effects in molecular rolling friction

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Rolling lubrication with spherical molecules working as 'nanobearings' has failed experimentally so far, without a full understanding of the physics involved and of the reasons why. Past model simulations and common sense have shown that molecules can only roll when they are not too closely packed to jam. The same type of model simulations now shows in addition that molecular rolling friction can develop deep minima once the molecule's peripheral 'pitch' can match the substrate periodicity, much as ordinary cogwheels do in a rack-and-pinion system. When the pinion-rack matching is bad, the driven molecular rolling becomes discontinuous and noisy, whence energy is dissipated and friction is large. This suggests experiments to be conducted by varying the rack-and-pinion matching. That could be pursued not only by changing molecules and substrates, but also by applying different sliding directions within the same system, or by applying pressure, to change the effective matching.

Improving Data Center Efficiency with Rack or Row Cooling Devices

Broader source: All U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office Webpages (Extended Search)

Challenging conventional Challenging conventional cooling systems Rack/row-mounted cooling devices can replace or supplement conventional cooling systems and result in energy savings. Noncontact Rack and Pinion Powered by the Lateral Casimir Force

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The lateral Casimir force is employed to propose a design for a potentially wear-proof rack and pinion with no contact, which can be miniaturized to the nanoscale. The robustness of the design is studied by exploring the relation between the pinion velocity and the rack velocity in the different domains of the parameter space. The effects of friction and added external load are also examined. It is shown that the device can hold up extremely high velocities, unlike what the general perception of the Casimir force as a weak interaction might suggest.

CASMO-2 spent-fuel-rack criticality analysis

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

In recent years, utilities have needed to increase their spent-fuel storage capacity. Both Maine Yankee pressurized water reactor (PWR) and Vermont Yankee boiling water reactor (BWR) have increased their spent-fuel rack capacity by decreasing the canister center-to-center spacing while adding fixed poison. Licensing criticality analysis of such changes in spent-fuel rack design have been performed at Yankee Atomic Electric Co. (YAEC) using NITAWL-KENO-IV and the 123-group XSDRN library. However, KENO/Monte Carlo analysis has inherent drawbacks when applied to spent-fuel rack design and modification. These include statistical uncertainty and long computer time. In contrast, the transport theory code, CASMO-2, provides deterministic and fast criticality analysis. Also, since collapsed and transport-corrected cross sections are generated, PDQ can be used to analyze large array problems which are prohibitively expensive using KENO. In this work, the authors apply the CASMO-PDQ methodology to the Maine Yankee and Vermont Yankee high-density spent-fuel rack designs, and compare the final results against KENO.

Rack-mounted chemistry IV: the thermal rearrangement of 7-oxabenzonorbornadienes into benzo[b]oxepines on and off the polycyclic rack

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract The thermal rearrangement of [3]polynorbornane bis-imide rack-mounted 7-oxabenzonorbornadienes has been conducted using flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) at 520C and is compared with the FVP of similar 7-oxabenzonorbornadienes off the rack. The isomerisation is considered to involve (a) CO bond cleavage to a vinylogous 1,5-dipole, (b) formation of a benzene epoxide by nucleophilic ring-closure and (c) valence-isomerisation of the benzene epoxide to the oxepine. Competing fragmentation to the isobenzofuran by ejection of acetylene and other rearrangements become prominent pathways off the rack, whereas isomerisation to the oxepine is highly favored on the rack.

The effects of friction from support surfaces on the dynamic motion of free standing spent fuel rack submerged in water

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The friction resistance between rack supports and a pool floor liner plays an important role in the description of the dynamic motion behavior of free standing spent fuel storage racks submerged in water within a pool. The effects of varying the Coulomb friction coefficient was investigated on the dynamic response of a typical rack module subjected to three dimensional seismic floor excitations. The rack, fuel bundle, adjacent racks and pool wall, and surrounding water are hydrodynamically coupled. The fluid-structure interaction (FSI) induced is included in the nonlinear dynamic time history analysis using the added-hydrodynamic-mass concept based on potential theory per the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) acceptance criteria. The rack module is described using a three dimensional (3-D) stick finite element model including the possible dynamic behavior of the impacts of fuel-rack, rack-rack, and rack-pool wall, the tilting or uplift and the frictional sliding of the rack supports, and the frictional sliding of the rack supports, and the impacts of the rack supports to the pool floor. Some response results for two typical friction coefficients are presented and discussed in a more quantitative manner.

Refurbishment of the rotating rack of the OSU TRIGA MKII reactor

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Many TRIGA reactors have experienced operational difficulties with the rotating racks used for sample irradiation. Generally the rack gradually becomes more difficult to rotate until it finally seizes. The recommended action at that point is replacement of the entire facility at a significant cost. The purpose of this paper is to describe the symptoms leading to rack failure and to present the results of a refurbishment procedure that does not involve the use of solvents which create mixed chemical and radioactive hazardous waste. The primary reason for rack failure is the buildup of sludge produced through irradiation of lubrication oil. The refurbishment procedure involves using a commercially available degreasing solution which can be pumped into and out of the rack with the objective of removing this sludge. The solution used is sold under the trade name 'Simple Green'. No radioactive material was detected on smear or air samples taken of the work area during the reifurbishment activities and the rack rotates freely in both direction even after eighteen months of operation. The only disadvantage to performing this procedure has been the need to maintain a very aggressive contamination control program when unloading samples from the rack. A very fine particulate material attaches to the outside of tubes used to encapsulate samples. This material can produce contamination levels of 10,000 dpm/100 cm{sup 2} in the worst cases but will typically produce local hot spots on the order of 1000 dpm. (author)

Unbraced pallet rack design in accordance with European practicePart 2: Essential verification checks

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract This paper concludes a two-parts paper focusing on the design of steel storage pallet racks in accordance with the European provisions EN 15512 Steel static storage systems Adjustable pallet racking systems. In part 1, Selection of the Method of Analysis,a parametric study has been presented on medium-rise semi-continuous unbraced racks differing for components, geometries and degrees of flexural stiffness of both beam-to-column joints and base-plate connections. The choice of the method of analysis has been discussed, stressing out the influence of both the warping effects and the importance of univocal rules for designers to evaluate the elastic critical buckling loads of the overall frame as well as of the uprights (i.e, the vertical components in racks). This second part deals with rack design and considers serviceability lateral displacements of the whole rack and both resistance and stability ultimate limit states for the uprights. The different alternatives associated directly with the requirements of the design provisions. or not in contrast with them, have been discussed and applied in order to single out their differences in terms of safety index as well as in the optimal use of the material. Concluding remarks underline the weak points of the European rack standards and are of practical interest for structural engineers, stressing clearly when the recommended procedures fail, hence leading to an unsafe and uneconomic design.

Determination of accidental forklift truck impact forces on drive-in steel rack structures

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The paper addresses the problem of determining the accidental forklift truck impact forces on steel storage racks. Based on first principles of mechanics, simple models of a loaded forklift truck and a drive-in racking structure are presented. Model masses, as well as stiffness and damping coefficients are calibrated against experimental results obtained from tests of a forklift truck and a drive-in racking structure. Comparisons between experimental results and solutions obtained from the simple mechanical models show that the simple models accurately reproduce the static and dynamic behaviours of their associated structures. Based on the drive-in rack impact test results presented in a companion paper (Gilbert and Rasmussen, submitted for publication) [1] and the simple mechanical models for drive-in racks, actual impact forces are calculated and presented. Finally, using the impact test results and the simple mechanical models, the actual motion of the forklift truck body is calculated. This motion, being a common characteristic to all drive-in racking impacts, allows impact forces to be obtained for various pallet loads, impact elevations and rack characteristics. Thus, the paper concludes with a general method for calculating forces generated under forklift truck impact.

Utilization of a finite element model to verify spent nuclear fuel storage rack welds

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Elastic and plastic finite element analyses were performed for the inner tie block assembly of a 25 port fuel rack designed for installation at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP). The model was specifically developed to verify the adequacy of certain welds joining components of the fuel storage rack assembly. The work scope for this task was limited to an investigation of the stress levels in the inner tie welds when the rack was subjected to seismic loads. Structural acceptance criteria used for the elastic calculations performed were as defined by the rack`s designer. Structural acceptance criteria used for the plastic calculations performed as part of this effort were as defined in Subsection NF and Appendix F of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The results confirm that the welds joining the inner tie block to the surrounding rack structure meet the acceptance criteria. The analysis results verified that the inner tie block welds should be capable of transferring the expected seismic load without structural failure.

Uncertainty analysis of criticality safety for the plate type fuel assembly storage rack

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

To evaluate the criticality safety of the fresh and the spent fuel storage racks in an open pool type research reactor designed by KAERI, the upper subcriticality limit (USL) analysis was carried out. First, the bias and its uncertainty of MCNP code system with ENDF/B-VII library were evaluated using the calculation results of the 183 benchmark experiments. The criticality calculations for the fuel storage rack are carried out under a normal state, an increased water temperature, a fuel assembly drop, and an eccentric insertion which can affect the criticality. Considering biases and uncertainties for the MCNP code system, abnormal conditions, and the manufacturing tolerance of the cell tube thickness, the USL value that can guarantee sufficient subcriticality is determined. It was found that the criticality of the fresh and the spent fuel storage racks currently designed satisfy the USL condition. Additionally, it was concluded that the pitch size of a fresh fuel storage rack can be reduced for efficient space availability, and even under a worst case in which the fresh storage rack is surrounded by a lower water density and the smallest pitch size satisfies the USL conditions.

Dynamic Control of a Flow-Rack Automated Storage and Retrieval System

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In this paper we propose a control scheme based on coloured Petri net (CPN) for a flow-rack automated storage and retrieval system. The AS/RS is modelled using Coloured Petri nets, the developed model has been used to capture and provide the rack state. We introduce in the control system an optimization module as a decision process which performs a real-time optimization working on a discrete events time scale. The objective is to find bin locations for the retrieval requests by minimizing the total number of retrieval cycles for a batch of requests and thereby increase the system throughput. By solving the optimization model, the proposed method gives according to customers request and the rack state, the best bin locations for retrieval, i.e. allowing at the same time to satisfy the customers request and carrying out the minimum of retrieval cycles.

Non-contact rack and pinion powered by the lateral Casimir force

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The lateral Casimir force is employed to propose a design for a potentially wear-proof rack and pinion with no contact, which can be miniaturized to nano-scale.

Generalized model of undercutting of involute spur gears generated by rack-cutters

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract In this work a generalized approach for defining the phenomenon undercutting of involute teeth is proposed, where besides the traditional boundary case, called undercutting type I, additionally two more boundary cases, defined as undercutting of type \\{IIa\\} and type \\{IIb\\} are described. According to this approach, the traditional undercutting type I is caused by the rectilinear profile of the rack-cutter and the non-traditional undercutting type \\{IIa\\} and type \\{IIb\\} is caused by the rack-cutter fillet. The parametric equations of the so-called boundary fillets of the types \\{IIa\\} and \\{IIb\\} defining the area of existence of the rack-cutter fillet are drawn. Explicitly, an additional boundary condition for avoiding the undercutting of type \\{IIa\\} and type \\{IIb\\} is drawn. The maximum value of the radius of the rack-cutter fillet, at which there is no undercutting, is specified. Two types of quantitative indices for the estimation of the extent of undercutting of the teeth in a radial and tangential direction are defined.

Optimal dimensions minimizing expected travel time of a single machine flow rack AS/RS

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract In this paper, the aim is to determine the optimal dimensions of a flow rack automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) using a single machine for storage and retrieval operations. These optimal dimensions are evaluated for minimum expected travel times of the storage and retrieval machine. An enumeration technique is used on a large range of system configurations going from 100 to 20,000 storage segments. Initially, optimization is carried out on six travel time expressions dealing with single and dual cycle travel times considering two dwell point positions. The results are then studied to investigate the influence of travel time expressions on both optimal dimensions and the shape factor of the system rack. Secondly, a new generalized mathematical model was developed by introducing an occurrence proportion parameter, relative to dual cycles, in order to determine the influence of the system functioning (proportion of dual cycles and load rate) on optimal dimensions.

Braided racks, Hurwitz actions and Nichols algebras with many cubic relations

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We classify Nichols algebras of irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules over groups such that the underlying rack is braided and the homogeneous component of degree three of the Nichols algebra satisfies a given inequality. This assumption turns out to be equivalent to a factorization assumption on the Hilbert series. Besides the known Nichols algebras we obtain a new example. Our method is based on a combinatorial invariant of the Hurwitz orbits with respect to the action of the braid group on three strands.

Thermal Issues Associated with the Lighting Systems, Electronics Racks, and Pre-Amplifier Modules in the National Ignition System

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This report summarizes an investigation of the thermal issues related to the National Ignition Facility. The influence of heat sources such as lighting fixtures, electronics racks, and pre-amplifier modules (PAMs) on the operational performance of the laser guide beam tubes and optical alignment hardware in the NE laser bays were investigated with experiments and numerical models. In particular, empirical heat transfer data was used to establish representative and meaningful boundary conditions and also serve as bench marks for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. Numerical models, constructed with a commercial CFD code, were developed to investigate the extent of thermal plumes and radiation heat transfer from the heat sources. From these studies, several design modifications were recommended including reducing the size of all fluorescent lights in the NIF laser bays to single 32 W bulb fixtures, maintaining minimum separation distances between light fixtures/electronics racks and beam transport hardware, adding motion sensors in areas of the laser bay to control light fixture operation during maintenance procedures, properly cooling all electronics racks with air-water heat exchangers with heat losses greater than 25 W/rack to the M1 laser bay, ensuring that the electronics racks are not overcooked and thus maintain their surface temperatures to within a few degrees centigrade of the mean air temperature, and insulating the electronic bays and optical support structures on the PAMs.

Rectification of the lateral Casimir force in a vibrating non-contact rack and pinion

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The nonlinear dynamics of a cylindrical pinion that is kept at a distance from a vibrating rack is studied, and it is shown that the lateral Casimir force between the two corrugated surfaces can be rectified. The effects of friction and external load are taken into account and it is shown that the pinion can do work against loads of up to a critical value, which is set by the amplitude of the lateral Casimir force. We present a phase diagram for the rectified motion that could help its experimental investigations, as the system exhibits a chaotic behavior in a large part of the parameter space.
