The Q/U Imaging ExperimenT (QUIET) is designed to measure polarization in the cosmic microwave background, targeting the imprint of inflationary gravitational waves at large angular scales({approx}1 Degree-Sign ). Between 2008 October and 2010 December, two independent receiver arrays were deployed sequentially on a 1.4 m side-fed Dragonian telescope. The polarimeters that form the focal planes use a compact design based on high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) that provides simultaneous measurements of the Stokes parameters Q, U, and I in a single module. The 17-element Q-band polarimeter array, with a central frequency of 43.1 GHz, has the best sensitivity (69 {mu}Ks{sup 1/2}) and the lowest instrumental systematic errors ever achieved in this band, contributing to the tensor-to-scalar ratio at r < 0.1. The 84-element W-band polarimeter array has a sensitivity of 87 {mu}Ks{sup 1/2} at a central frequency of 94.5 GHz. It has the lowest systematic errors to date, contributing at r < 0.01. The two arrays together cover multipoles in the range l {approx} 25-975. These are the largest HEMT-based arrays deployed to date. This article describes the design, calibration, performance, and sources of systematic error of the instrument.

Let us consider the long term environmental, health and safety, and community impacts resulting from the proposed TGP pipeline that slated to cross the state through many small rural communities. As we go forward as a species let us not forget how we depend on the earth and natural world for our survival. Clean air, clean water, forests and wetlands, prime agricultural lands are all essential to the health of this Commonwealth. Western Massachusetts provides the state with rich soils, wildlife, aquifers and forests. Our rural lands help balance the excessive carbon production in other sections of the state. Is it wise to allow a pipeline to transport horizontally drilled fractured gas produced elsewhere just to get it to port to export it to the highest bidder? As I recently heard Senator Ed Markey say in a video posted online, it is not up to our Congresspersons where the gas ultimately goes. It is up to the CEO of the corporations and their bottom line is to satisfy shareholders by making the greatest profit. Ultimately, Massachusetts ratepayers will pay for the pipeline through a tariff. We will pay many times. We will pay with our wallets, with our lack of democracy as we face the possibility of eminent domain, we will pay with the needless degradation of our environment, we will risk injury from potential leaks and explosions and for what gain? Can we be assured that the gas will definitely be used to generate power in Massachusetts, that it will stay in the U.S.? May we not instead look to and fund other clean renewable energy policies that will increase the lead Massachusetts already has in this direction. Chris Stockman RN,M.Ed Plainfield, Massachusetts

  14. QU Car: a very high luminosity nova-like binary with a carbon-enriched companion

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    J. E. Drew; L. E. Hartley; K. S. Long; J. van der Walt

    2002-09-16T23:59:59.000Z

QU Car is listed in cataclysmic variable star catalogues as a nova-like variable. This little-studied, yet bright interacting binary is re-appraised here in the light of new high-quality ultraviolet (UV) interstellar line data obtained with STIS on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The detection of a component of interstellar absorption at a mean LSR velocity of $-$14 km s$^{-1}$ indicates that the distance to QU Car may be $\\sim$2 kpc or more -- a considerable increase on the previous lower-limiting distance of 500 pc. If so, the bolometric luminosity of QU Car could exceed $10^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$. This would place this binary in the luminosity domain occupied by known compact-binary supersoft X-ray sources. Even at a 500 pc, QU Car appears to be the most luminous nova-like variable known. New intermediate dispersion optical spectroscopy of QU Car spanning 3800--7000 \\AA is presented. These data yield the discovery that C{\\sc iv} $\\lambda\\lambda$5801,12 is present as an unusually prominent emission line in an otherwise low-contrast line spectrum. Using measurements of this and other lines in a recombination line analysis, it is shown that the C/He abundance as proxied by the n(C$^{4+}$)/n(He$^{2+}$) ratio may be as high as 0.06 (an order of magnitude higher than the solar ratio). Furthermore, the C/O abundance ratio is estimated to be greater than 1. These findings suggest that the companion in QU Car is a carbon star. If so, it would be the first example of a carbon star in such a binary. An early-type R star best matches the required abundance pattern and could escape detection at optical wavelengths provided the distance to QU Car is $\\sim$2 kpc or more.

We present HST/STIS (1160--1700A) echelle spectra of the cataclysmic variable (CV) star, QU Car, observed in time-tag mode at three epochs. In catalogues this binary is classified as a nova-like variable. We find evidence of a high-state non-magnetic CV at low inclination, with unusually high ionisation. We observed narrow absorption lines (few hundred km/s wide) in N V1240, O V1371 and Si IV1398, as well as broader (HWZI ~1000km/s) emission in C III1176, C IV1549 and He II1640, all with a superposed absorption component. High ionisation is indicated by the unusually string He II emission and the relative strength of the O V absorption line. The dereddened UV SED of, on average, -2.3 suggests that disc accretion dominates the spectral energy distribution. In two observations velocity shifting is noted in the absorption lines on a timescale long enough not to repeat within the ~2600-sec exposures. The absorption superposed on the C IV emission line moves coherently with the N V and Si IV absorption, suggesting...

The absorption superposed on the C IV emission line moves coherently with the N V and Si IV absorption, suggesting the same origin for all absorption lines -- most likely to be in the accretion disc atmosphere. Weak blueshifted absorption in NV and C\\IV provides evidence of an outflow component and we estimate a maximum outflow velocity of ~2000km/s. This may be linked to a wind launched from further out in the disc than is typically seen in those high-state non-magnetic CV whose wind speeds are observed to reach to >4000km/s. Unusually, three ionisation stages of carbon -- C II, C III and C IV -- are present in emission, with line width increasing with higher ionisation. The presence of C II in emission and the positive line-width/ionisation correlation is most easily reconciled with an origin in a disc chromosphere, beyond the influence of the EUV-emitting inner disc.

In 1926, Murray proposed the first law for the optimal design of blood vessels. He minimized the power dissipation arising from the trade-off between fluid circulation and blood maintenance. The law, based on a constant fluid viscosity, states that in the optimal configuration the fluid flow rate inside the vessel is proportional to the cube of the vessel radius, implying that wall shear stress is not dependent on the vessel radius. Murray's law has been found to be true in blood macrocirculation, but not in microcirculation. In 2005, Alarc\\'on et al took into account the non monotonous dependence of viscosity on vessel radius - F{\\aa}hr{\\ae}us - Lindqvist effect - due to phase separation effect of blood. They were able to predict correctly the behavior of wall shear stresses in microcirculation. One last crucial step remains however: to account for the dependence of blood viscosity on shear rates. In this work, we investigate how viscosity dependence on shear rate affects Murray's law. We extended Murray's o...

It is shown that the notorious claim by Halpern et al. recently repeated in their comment that the method, logic, and conclusions of our "Falsification Of The CO2 Greenhouse Effects Within The Frame Of Physics" would be in error has no foundation. Since Halpern et al. communicate our arguments incorrectly, their comment is scientifcally vacuous. In particular, it is not true that we are "trying to apply the Clausius statement of the Second Law of Thermodynamics to only one side of a heat transfer process rather than the entire process" and that we are "systematically ignoring most non-radiative heat flows applicable to Earth's surface and atmosphere". Rather, our falsification paper discusses the violation of fundamental physical and mathematical principles in 14 examples of common pseudo-derivations of fictitious greenhouse effects that are all based on simplistic pictures of radiative transfer and their obscure relation to thermodynamics, including but not limited to those descriptions (a) that define a "Pe...
