Low-frequency QPO, Magnetic Flood and the states of GRS 1915+105

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We sum up progress accomplished, since the last microquasar workshop, on the physics of the Accretion-Ejection Instability (AEI), and its ability to explain the properties of the low-frequency QPO of microquasars. These results concern the basic theory of the instability, its numerical simulation and the resulting modelisation of the QPO, as well as detailed observations of the QPO properties. They converge to reinforce the `magnetic flood' scenario, extrapolated from the AEI to explain the ~ 30 minutes cycles of G1915. We then discuss directions in which this scenario might be extended toward a more global view of the evolution of this source.

Discovery of a 450 Hz QPO from the Microquasar GRO J1655-40 with RXTE

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We report the discovery with the proportional counter array (PCA) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) of a 450 Hz quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO) in the hard X-ray flux from the galactic microquasar GRO J1655-40. This is the highest frequency QPO modulation seen to date from a black hole. The QPO is detected only in the hard X-ray band above 13 keV. It is both strong and narrow, with a typical rms amplitude of 4.5 % in the 13 - 27 keV range, and a width of 40 Hz (FWHM). For two observations in which we detect the 450 Hz QPO a previously known 300 Hz QPO is also observed in the 2 - 13 keV band. We show that these two QPO sometimes appear simultaneously, thus demonstrating the first detection of a pair of high frequency QPO in a black hole system. Prior to this, pairs of high frequency QPO have only been detected in neutron star systems. GRO J1655-40 is one of only a handful of black hole systems with a good dynamical mass constraint. For a non-rotating black hole with mass between 5.5 - 7.9 solar masses, the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) ranges from 45 - 70 km. For any mass in this range the radius at which the orbital frequency reaches 450 Hz is less than the ISCO radius, indicating that if the modulation is caused by Kepler motion, the black hole must have appreciable spin. If the QPO frequency is set by the orbital frequency of matter at the ISCO then for this mass range the dimensionless angular momentum lies between 0.15 < j < 0.5. Moreover, if the modulation is caused by oscillation modes in the disk or Lense-Thirring precession, then this would also require a rapidly rotating hole. We briefly discuss the implications of our findings for models of X-ray variability in black holes and neutron stars.

The Compton Microscope: Using the Energy Dependence of QPO Amplitudes to Probe Their Origin in Accretion Disks

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We report the development of a new tool to determine the origin of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in accretion disk systems. The technique uses the source energy spectrum and the energy dependence of the QPO fractional amplitude to restrict the location of the emission region of the modulated photons, which are assumed to originate in the inner accretion disk. Both Monte Carlo and semi-analytical methods are presented. We assume the accretion disk is enshrouded by a slab atmosphere of hot electrons in which unsaturated Compton scattering produces the high-energy spectrum. Properties of the atmosphere, in particular the electron temperature, are assumed functions of radius from the central compact object. We show that our model reproduces the observed energy dependence of the fractional amplitude of the 67 Hz QPO in GRS 1915+105 if the QPO is assumed to originate within five gravitational radii from the innermost stable circular orbit.

Parametric resonance as a model for QPO sources -- I. A general approach to multiple scales

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In the resonance model, high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are supposed to be a consequence of nonlinear resonance between modes of oscillations occurring within the innermost parts of an accretion disk. Several models with a prescribed mode--mode interaction were proposed in order to explain the characteristic properties of the resonance in QPO sources. In this paper, we examine nonlinear oscillations of a system having a quadratic nonlinearity and we show that this case is particularly relevant for QPOs. We present a very convenient way how to study internal resonances of a fully general system using the method of multiple scales. Finally, we concentrate to conservative systems and discuss their behavior near the 3:2 resonance.

Intermittency and Lifetime of the 625 Hz QPO in the 2004 Hyperflare from the Magnetar SGR 1806-20 as evidence for magnetic coupling between the crust and the core

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) detected in the 2004 giant flare from SGR 1806-20 are often interpreted as global magneto-elastic oscillations of the neutron star. There is, however, a large discrepancy between theoretical models, which predict that the highest frequency oscillations should die out rapidly, and the observations, which suggested that the highest-frequency signals persisted for ~100s in X-ray data from two different spacecraft. This discrepancy is particularly important for the high-frequency QPO at ~625 Hz. However, previous analyses did not systematically test whether the signal could also be there in much shorter data segments, more consistent with the theoretical predictions. Here, we test for the presence of the high-frequency QPO at 625 Hz in data from both the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) systematically both in individual rotational cycles of the neutron star, as well as averaged over multiple successive rotational c...

An explanation for the kHz-QPO twin peaks separation in slow and fast rotators

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In this Letter we further explore the idea, suggested previously by Klu{\\'z}niak and collaborators, that the high frequency QPOs may be explained as a resonant coupling between the neutron star spin and two epicyclic modes of accretion disk oscillations. We confirm result of Lee, Abramowicz and Klu{\\'z}niak (\\cite{Lee2004}) that the strongest response occurs when the frequency difference of the two modes equals either the spin frequency (for ``slow rotators'') or half of it (for ``fast rotators''). New points discussed in this Letter are: (1) We suggest that the coupling is gravitational, and due to a non-axially symmetric structure of the rotating neutron star. (2) We found that two excited modes may be both connected to vertical oscillations of the disk, and that strong gravity is not needed to excite the modes.

Hydrolysis of DFP and the Nerve Agent (S)-Sarin by DFPase Proceeds Along Two Different Reaction Pathways: Implica-tions for Engineering Bioscavengers

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Organophosphorus (OP) nerve agents such as (S)-sarin are among the most highly toxic compounds that have been synthesized. Engineering enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of nerve agents ( bioscavengers ) is an emerging prophylactic approach to diminishing their toxic effects. Although its native function is not known, diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase) from Loligo vulgaris catalyzes the hydrolysis of OP compounds. Here, we investigate the mechanisms of diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) and (S)-sarin hydrolysis by DFPase with quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) umbrella sampling simulations. We find that the mechanism for hydrolysis of DFP involves nucleophilic attack by Asp229 on phosphorus to form a pentavalent intermediate. P F bond dissociation then yields a phosphoacyl enzyme intermediate in the rate-limiting step. The simulations suggest that a water molecule, coordinated to the catalytic Ca2+, donates a proton to Asp121 and then attacks the tetrahedral phosphoacyl intermediate to liberate the diisopropylphosphate product. In contrast, the calculated free energy barrier for hydrolysis of (S)-sarin by the same mechanism is highly unfavorable, primarily due to the instability of the pentavalent phosphoenzyme species. Instead, simulations suggest that hydrolysis of (S)-sarin proceeds by a mechanism in which Asp229 could activate an intervening water molecule for nucleophilic attack on the substrate. These findings may lead to improved strategies for engineering DFPase and related six-bladed -propeller folds for more efficient degradation of OP compounds.

The spectral-timing properties of upper and lower kHz QPOs

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Soft lags from the emission of the lower kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of neutron star low mass X-ray binaries have been reported from 4U1608-522 and 4U1636-536. Those lags hold prospects for constraining the origin of the QPO emission, including the location at which the oscillation takes place, a stepping stone before we can use the kHz QPOs to probe strong field General Relativity. In this paper, we investigate the spectral-timing properties of both the lower and upper kHz QPOs from the neutron star binary 4U1728-34, in which the duty cycles of both QPOs are comparable, using the entire Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer archive on this source. We show that the lag-energy spectra of the two QPOs are systematically different: while the lower kHz QPO shows soft lags, the upper kHz QPO shows either a flat lag-energy spectrum or hard variations lagging softer variations. This suggests two different QPO-generation mechanisms. We also computed the first covariance spectra for both kHz QPOs and perfor...

SOFT LAGS IN NEUTRON STAR kHz QUASI-PERIODIC OSCILLATIONS: EVIDENCE FOR REVERBERATION?

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

High frequency soft reverberation lags have now been detected from stellar mass and supermassive black holes. Their interpretation involves reflection of a hard source of photons onto an accretion disk, producing a delayed reflected emission, with a time lag consistent with the light travel time between the irradiating source and the disk. Independently of the location of the clock, the kHz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) emission is thought to arise from the neutron star boundary layer. Here, we search for the signature of reverberation of the kHz QPO emission, by measuring the soft lags and the lag energy spectrum of the lower kHz QPOs from 4U1608-522. Soft lags, ranging from {approx}15 to {approx}40 {mu}s, between the 3-8 keV and 8-30 keV modulated emissions are detected between 565 and 890 Hz. The soft lags are not constant with frequency and show a smooth decrease between 680 Hz and 890 Hz. The broad band X-ray spectrum is modeled as the sum of a disk and a thermal Comptonized component, plus a broad iron line, expected from reflection. The spectral parameters follow a smooth relationship with the QPO frequency, in particular the fitted inner disk radius decreases steadily with frequency. Both the bump around the iron line in the lag energy spectrum and the consistency between the lag changes and the inferred changes of the inner disk radius, from either spectral fitting or the QPO frequency, suggest that the soft lags may indeed involve reverberation of the hard pulsating QPO source on the disk.

Distributed Sensing and Cooperating Control for Swarms of Robotic vehicles

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

DISTRIBUTED SENSING AND COOPERATING CONTROL FOR SWARMS OF ROBOTIC VEHICLES Key words: Distributed Sensing, Cooperative Control. ABSTRACT We discuss an approach to effectively control a large swarm of autonomous, robotic vehicles, as they per- form a search and tag operation. In particular, the robotic agents are to find the source of a chemical plume. The robotic agents work together through dis- tributed sensing and cooperative control. Distributed sensing is achieved through each agent sampling and sharing his information with others. Cooperative con- trol h accomplished by each agent u-sing its neighbors information to determine an update strategy. INTRODUCTION There is currently considerable interest in expanding the role of robotic vehicles in surveillance and inspec- tion; searching, following and t aggir-g and locating and identifying targets. In particular, researchers are beginning to focus on using small autonomous robotic vehicles for these tasks. This focus has been brought about largely because of the many recent advances in microelectronics and sensors, which include small, low power, CCD cameras; small microprocessors with ex- panded capabilities; autonomous navigation systems using GPS; and severrd types of small sensors. It seems likely that these technological advances will lead to in- expensive, easy to fabricate, autonomous vehicles out- fitted with an array of sensors. This, in turn, will allow researchers to consider teams, or even swarms, of these agents to perform a particular task. It is natural then to wonder how one might effectively control a team, or even a swarm, of robotic agents. In this paper, we discuss an approach to effectively control a large swarm of autonomous, robotic vehicles as they perform a search and tag operation. In par- ticular, the robotic agents are to find the source of a chemical plume. The robotic agents work together through distributed sensing and cooperative control. Distributed sensing is achieved through each agent sampling and sharing his information with others. Co- operative control is accomplished by each agent using its neighbors information to determine a control (or TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT In this section we highlight the technical development of our distributed sensing and cooperative control ap- proach to effectively control a large swarm of au- tonomous, robotic vehicles. Recall that the agents are tasked with locating the chemical plume source within a chemical plume field. In our simulations, we assume that the agents are outfitted with a GPS sensor, which provides their cur- rent location, and a chemical "sniffer," which allows them to detect the strength of the chemical plume at their current location. Furthermore, we assume that the robots have onboard processing capability, and are able to communicate with one another via RF modems together with bit packing and error correction tech- niques, like those discussed by Lewis et al [4]. Thus, each agent is able to communicate and share informa- tion with all others (i.e., there is global communica- tion). In this mode, at a particular instant in time, the agents sample the chemical plume field and post this information and their current location for the oth- ers. The agents then assemble the information and de- termine a projected target of where they believe the chemical source is located. The position update for each agent is then based upon its current position and the position of the projected target.

MASS-ANGULAR-MOMENTUM RELATIONS IMPLIED BY MODELS OF TWIN PEAK QUASI-PERIODIC OSCILLATIONS

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Twin peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) appear in the X-ray power-density spectra of several accreting low-mass neutron star (NS) binaries. Observations of the peculiar Z-source Circinus X-1 display unusually low QPO frequencies. Using these observations, we have previously considered the relativistic precession (RP) twin peak QPO model to estimate the mass of the central NS in Circinus X-1. We have shown that such an estimate results in a specific mass-angular-momentum (M - j) relation rather than a single preferred combination of M and j. Here we confront our previous results with another binary, the atoll source 4U 1636-53 that displays the twin peak QPOs at very high frequencies, and extend the consideration to various twin peak QPO models. In analogy to the RP model, we find that these imply their own specific M - j relations. We explore these relations for both sources and note differences in the {chi}{sup 2} behavior that represent a dichotomy between high- and low-frequency sources. Based on the RP model, we demonstrate that this dichotomy is related to a strong variability of the model predictive power across the frequency plane. This variability naturally comes from the radial dependence of characteristic frequencies of orbital motion. As a consequence, the restrictions on the models resulting from observations of low-frequency sources are weaker than those in the case of high-frequency sources. Finally we also discuss the need for a correction to the RP model and consider the removing of M - j degeneracies, based on the twin peak QPO-independent angular momentum estimates.

A ? 3.8 hr PERIODICITY FROM AN ULTRASOFT ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEUS CANDIDATE

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Very few galactic nuclei are found to show significant X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). After carefully modeling the noise continuum, we find that the ?3.8 hr QPO in the ultrasoft active galactic nucleus candidate 2XMM J123103.2+110648 was significantly detected (?5?) in two XMM-Newton observations in 2005, but not in the one in 2003. The QPO root mean square (rms) is very high and increases from ?25% in 0.2-0.5 keV to ?50% in 1-2 keV. The QPO probably corresponds to the low-frequency type in Galactic black hole X-ray binaries, considering its large rms and the probably low mass (?10{sup 5} M {sub ?}) of the black hole in the nucleus. We also fit the soft X-ray spectra from the three XMM-Newton observations and find that they can be described with either pure thermal disk emission or optically thick low-temperature Comptonization. We see no clear X-ray emission from the two Swift observations in 2013, indicating lower source fluxes than those in XMM-Newton observations.

THE TRUNCATED DISK FROM SUZAKU DATA OF GX 339-4 IN THE EXTREME VERY HIGH STATE

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We report on the geometry of accretion disk and high-energy coronae in the strong Comptonization state (the very high/steep power law/hard intermediate state) based on a Suzaku observation of the famous Galactic black hole GX 339-4. These data were taken just before the peak of the 2006-2007 outburst, and the average X-ray luminosity in the 0.7-200 keV band is estimated to be 2.9 Multiplication-Sign 10{sup 38} erg s{sup -1} for a distance of 8 kpc. We fit the spectrum with both simple (independent disk and corona) and sophisticated (energetically coupled disk and corona) models; all fits imply that the underlying optically thick disk is truncated significantly before the innermost stable circular orbit around the black hole. We show this directly by a comparison with similar broadband data from a disk-dominated spectrum at almost the same luminosity observed by XMM-Newton and RXTE 3 days after the Suzaku observation. During the Suzaku observation, the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) frequency changes from 4.3 Hz to 5.5 Hz, while the spectrum softens. The energetically coupled model gives a corresponding 5% {+-} 8% decrease in the derived inner radius of the disk. While this is not significant, it is consistent with the predicted change in QPO frequency from the Lense-Thirring precession of the hot flow interior to the disk and/or a deformation mode of this flow, as a higher QPO frequency implies a smaller size scale for the corona. This is consistent with the truncated disk extending further inward toward the black hole.

Search for gravitational wave radiation associated with the pulsating tail of the SGR 1806-20 hyperflare of 27 December 2004 using LIGO

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We have searched for Gravitational Waves (GWs) associated with the SGR 1806-20 hyperflare of 27 December 2004. This event, originating from a Galactic neutron star, displayed exceptional energetics. Recent investigations of the X-ray light curve's pulsating tail revealed the presence of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the 30 - 2000 Hz frequency range, most of which coincides with the bandwidth of the LIGO detectors. These QPOs, with well-characterized frequencies, can plausibly be attributed to seismic modes of the neutron star which could emit GWs. Our search targeted potential quasi-monochromatic GWs lasting for tens of seconds and emitted at the QPO frequencies. We have observed no candidate signals above a pre-determined threshold and our lowest upper limit was set by the 92.5 Hz QPO observed in the interval from 150 s to 260 s after the start of the flare. This bound corresponds to a (90% confidence) root-sum-squared amplitude h_rssdet^90% = 4.5e-22 strain Hz^-1/2 on the GW waveform strength in the...

The autoparametric 3:2 resonance in conservative systems

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In the resonance model, high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are supposed to be a consequence of nonlinear resonance between modes of oscillations occurring within the innermost parts of an accretion disk. Several models with a prescribed mode--mode interaction were proposed in order to explain the characteristic properties of the resonance in QPO sources. In this paper, we examine nonlinear oscillations of a system having two degrees of freedom and we show that this case could be particularly relevant for QPOs. We present a very convenient way how to study autoparametric resonances of a fully general system using the method of multiple scales. We concentrate to conservative systems and discuss their behavior near the 3:2 parametric resonance.

Near-Infrared and X-ray Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in Numerical Models of Sgr A*

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We report transient quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) on minute timescales in relativistic, radiative models of the galactic center source Sgr A*. The QPOs result from nonaxisymmetric $m=1$ structure in the accretion flow excited by MHD turbulence. Near-infrared (NIR) and X-ray power spectra show significant peaks at frequencies comparable to the orbital frequency at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) $f_o$. The excess power is associated with inward propagating magnetic filaments inside the ISCO. The amplitudes of the QPOs are sensitive to the electron distribution function. We argue that transient QPOs appear at a range of frequencies in the neighborhood of $f_o$ and that the power spectra, averaged over long times, likely show a broad bump near $f_o$ rather than distinct, narrow QPO features.

Searching for flickering variability in several symbiotic stars and related objects: BX Mon, V471 Per, RS Oph, V627 Cas, CI Cam V886 Her, Z And, T CrB, MWC 560, V407 Cyg

E-Print Network [OSTI]

UBVRI photometry observations of 10 symbiotic stars and related objects obtained in the period 2002-2003 are presented. Analysing differential light curves we found rapid light variations with timescales of tens of minutes and significant amplitudes in the well-known flickerers MWC 560, RS Oph, V407 Cyg and T CrB. MWC 560 and V407 Cyg demonstrate quasi periodic oscillations (QPO) with similar amplitudes and timescales. Flickering and unusual flare in V627 Cas as well as some indications of flickering presence in BX Mon are detected. The existence of 29 minutes oscillations in Z And with an amplitude about 0.02 mag in U band is confirmed. Only one symbiotic star, V471 Per, and both non symbiotic, CI Cam and V886 Her seem to be constant on flickering timescales. Nevertheless, small night to night changes in the brightness of V886 Her were observed as well.
