THE PUZZLING HARMONIC BEHAVIOR OF THE CATHEDRAL QPO IN XTE J1859+226

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We present a spectral and temporal analysis of the Cathedral quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) detected in the power density spectra of the black hole binary and microquasar XTE J1859+226, obtained using Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. This type of QPO has been seen on two occasions (MJDs 51574.43 and 51575.43) during the 1998 outburst of this source. It manifests as two peaks with similar amplitudes ({approx}3% and {approx}5% rms) and harmonically related centroid frequencies ({approx}3 and {approx}6 Hz). The temporal properties of these two peaks are different: the amplitude of the {approx}3-Hz feature varies, in anticorrelation with the count rate, by {approx}50%. The {approx}6-Hz feature, on the other hand, shows a slight increase ({approx}7%) in its amplitude with the count rate. The rms spectra of the two peaks are also quite different. The {approx}3-Hz feature is softer than the other one, and, although its rms amplitude increases with energy, it shows a cutoff at an energy of {approx}6 keV. The rms of the {approx}6-Hz feature increases with energies up to at least 20 keV. We also study the bicoherence b{sup 2}({mu}, {nu}) of both observations. At the diagonal position of the peaks, the values b{sup 2}({approx} 3, {approx} 3) and b{sup 2}({approx} 6, {approx} 6) are rather high and similar to those reported for type C QPOs of GRS 1915+105. In comparison with the latter source, the bicoherence of the {approx}3-Hz feature is higher than that of the other peak, which may indicate that the {approx}3-Hz feature is the fundamental QPO and the other is its first harmonic. The value of b{sup 2}({approx} 3, {approx} 6) is, however, very low and therefore indicates a behavior different from that seen in the type C QPO of GRS 1915+105. We discuss the implications of these differences in the context of a harmonic relationship between the peaks, and suggest that, rather than pure harmonics, we may see different modes of the same underlying phenomenon competing to produce QPOs at different frequencies.

The Compton Microscope: Using the Energy Dependence of QPO Amplitudes to Probe Their Origin in Accretion Disks

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We report the development of a new tool to determine the origin of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in accretion disk systems. The technique uses the source energy spectrum and the energy dependence of the QPO fractional amplitude to restrict the location of the emission region of the modulated photons, which are assumed to originate in the inner accretion disk. Both Monte Carlo and semi-analytical methods are presented. We assume the accretion disk is enshrouded by a slab atmosphere of hot electrons in which unsaturated Compton scattering produces the high-energy spectrum. Properties of the atmosphere, in particular the electron temperature, are assumed functions of radius from the central compact object. We show that our model reproduces the observed energy dependence of the fractional amplitude of the 67 Hz QPO in GRS 1915+105 if the QPO is assumed to originate within five gravitational radii from the innermost stable circular orbit.

Discovery of a ~2 hr high frequency X-ray QPO and iron K alpha reverberation in the active galaxy MS 2254.9-3712

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We report the discovery of a $\\sim 1.5 \\times 10^{-4}$ Hz ($\\sim 2$ hr) X-ray quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the active galaxy MS 2254.9-3712, using a $\\sim 70$ ks XMM-Newton observation. The QPO is significantly detected in the $1.2 - 5.0$ keV band only, connecting its origin with the primary X-ray power-law continuum. We detect a highly coherent soft lag between the $0.3 - 0.7$ keV and $1.2 - 5.0$ keV energy bands at the QPO and harmonic frequencies, with a 3:2 frequency ratio. An iron K$\\alpha$ reverberation lag is found at the harmonic frequency, indicating the reflecting material subtends some angle to the primary continuum, which is modulated by the QPO mechanism. The coherence at the QPO and harmonic frequencies is ~ unity, whereas the coherence in the broadband noise is decreasing with increasing frequency. Frequency resolved spectroscopy reveals the QPO and harmonic to have a hard energy dependence. These properties of the QPO variability, together with the current black hole mass estimate, $M_{...

Drop of coherence of the lower kilo-Hz QPO in neutron stars: is there a link with the innermost stable circular orbit?

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Using all available archival data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we follow the frequency of the kilo-Hz QPOs in three low luminosity neutron star low mass X-ray binaries; namely 4U 1636-536, 4U 1608-522, and 4U1735-44. Following earlier work, we focus our analysis on the lower kilo-Hz QPO, for which we study the dependency of its quality factor (Q) amplitude as a function of frequency over a range covering from 500 Hz to 1000 Hz. As previously found for 4U 1636-536, we show that the quality factor of the lower kilo-Hz increases with frequency up to a maximum frequency around 800 Hz, beyond which an abrupt drop of its coherence is observed down to a limiting frequency where the QPO disappears completely. Simultaneously the amplitude of the QPOs is almost constant below the peak frequency and starts to decrease smoothly afterwards. The peak frequency is 850 Hz, 820 Hz, 740 Hz whereas the limiting frequency is 920 Hz, 900 Hz and 830 Hz for 4U 1636-536, 4U 1608-522 and 4U 1735-44 respectively. A ceiling of the lower QPO frequencies is also seen clearly in a frequency versus count rate diagram for all sources. This behavior is reproducible within an object and between objects. We suggest here that the drop of coherence of the lower QPO may be a geometry-related effect, which could be related to the last stable circular orbit.

Do alternative fuel vehicles Do alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) improve air quality? How does the use of alternative fuels affect smog formation? You may find answers to these and other questions through the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC)-the nation's most com- prehensive repository of perfor- mance data and general informa- tion on AFVs. To date, more than 600 vehi- cles-including light-duty cars, trucks, vans, transit buses, and heavy-duty trucks-have been tested on various alternative and conventional fuels with the goal of identifying the potential for alter- native fuels to displace petroleum and improve our nation's air quality. Although comparing regu- lated emissions between fuels may seem straightforward, evaluating emissions is complicated by

Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update (EIA)

Theresa Theresa E. Hallquist Introduction The Petroleum Division (PD) of the Energy Informa- tion Administration (EIA) collects information relating to petroleum market prices and volumes on the EIA-782 survey. One way PD assesses the quality of these data is to compare the data with other sources. Large, irreconcilable differences among data series could indicate the need for improvement in survey de- sign or implementation, or may be due to conceptual differences. For more detailed information on the EIA-782 survey, refer to the notes at the end of this arti- cle. PD compares its EIA-782 series of petroleum market prices and volumes with both internal and external data sources on an ongoing basis. The sources include: * The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for retail prices of motor gasoline and No. 2 fuel oil * Form EIA-821, "Annual Fuel Oil and Kerosene

The Department of Energy (Department or DOE), has chosen an alternative reporting to the consolidated Performance and Accountability Report and instead, produces an Agency Financial Report, an Annual Performance Report and a Summary of Performance and Financial Information, pursuant to the OMB Circular A-136. This reporting approach simplifies and streamlines the performance presentations while utilizing the Internet for providing and leveraging additional performance information.

Hydrolysis of DFP and the Nerve Agent (S)-Sarin by DFPase Proceeds Along Two Different Reaction Pathways: Implica-tions for Engineering Bioscavengers

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Organophosphorus (OP) nerve agents such as (S)-sarin are among the most highly toxic compounds that have been synthesized. Engineering enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of nerve agents ( bioscavengers ) is an emerging prophylactic approach to diminishing their toxic effects. Although its native function is not known, diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase) from Loligo vulgaris catalyzes the hydrolysis of OP compounds. Here, we investigate the mechanisms of diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) and (S)-sarin hydrolysis by DFPase with quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) umbrella sampling simulations. We find that the mechanism for hydrolysis of DFP involves nucleophilic attack by Asp229 on phosphorus to form a pentavalent intermediate. P F bond dissociation then yields a phosphoacyl enzyme intermediate in the rate-limiting step. The simulations suggest that a water molecule, coordinated to the catalytic Ca2+, donates a proton to Asp121 and then attacks the tetrahedral phosphoacyl intermediate to liberate the diisopropylphosphate product. In contrast, the calculated free energy barrier for hydrolysis of (S)-sarin by the same mechanism is highly unfavorable, primarily due to the instability of the pentavalent phosphoenzyme species. Instead, simulations suggest that hydrolysis of (S)-sarin proceeds by a mechanism in which Asp229 could activate an intervening water molecule for nucleophilic attack on the substrate. These findings may lead to improved strategies for engineering DFPase and related six-bladed -propeller folds for more efficient degradation of OP compounds.

Beat-Frequency Models of Kilohertz QPOs

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Kilohertz QPO sources are reasonably well-characterized observationally, but many questions remain about the theoretical framework for these sources and the consequent implications of the observations for disk physics, strong gravity, and dense matter. We contrast the predictions and implications of the most extensively studied class of kilohertz QPO models, the beat-frequency models, with those of alternative classes of models. We also discuss the expected impact of new observations of these sources with satellites such as Chandra, XMM, and Constellation-X.

The spectral-timing properties of upper and lower kHz QPOs

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Soft lags from the emission of the lower kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of neutron star low mass X-ray binaries have been reported from 4U1608-522 and 4U1636-536. Those lags hold prospects for constraining the origin of the QPO emission, including the location at which the oscillation takes place, a stepping stone before we can use the kHz QPOs to probe strong field General Relativity. In this paper, we investigate the spectral-timing properties of both the lower and upper kHz QPOs from the neutron star binary 4U1728-34, in which the duty cycles of both QPOs are comparable, using the entire Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer archive on this source. We show that the lag-energy spectra of the two QPOs are systematically different: while the lower kHz QPO shows soft lags, the upper kHz QPO shows either a flat lag-energy spectrum or hard variations lagging softer variations. This suggests two different QPO-generation mechanisms. We also computed the first covariance spectra for both kHz QPOs and perfor...

MASS-ANGULAR-MOMENTUM RELATIONS IMPLIED BY MODELS OF TWIN PEAK QUASI-PERIODIC OSCILLATIONS

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Twin peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) appear in the X-ray power-density spectra of several accreting low-mass neutron star (NS) binaries. Observations of the peculiar Z-source Circinus X-1 display unusually low QPO frequencies. Using these observations, we have previously considered the relativistic precession (RP) twin peak QPO model to estimate the mass of the central NS in Circinus X-1. We have shown that such an estimate results in a specific mass-angular-momentum (M - j) relation rather than a single preferred combination of M and j. Here we confront our previous results with another binary, the atoll source 4U 1636-53 that displays the twin peak QPOs at very high frequencies, and extend the consideration to various twin peak QPO models. In analogy to the RP model, we find that these imply their own specific M - j relations. We explore these relations for both sources and note differences in the {chi}{sup 2} behavior that represent a dichotomy between high- and low-frequency sources. Based on the RP model, we demonstrate that this dichotomy is related to a strong variability of the model predictive power across the frequency plane. This variability naturally comes from the radial dependence of characteristic frequencies of orbital motion. As a consequence, the restrictions on the models resulting from observations of low-frequency sources are weaker than those in the case of high-frequency sources. Finally we also discuss the need for a correction to the RP model and consider the removing of M - j degeneracies, based on the twin peak QPO-independent angular momentum estimates.

Multicolour observations of V404 Cyg with ULTRACAM

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We present high time-resolution multicolour observations of the quiescent soft X-ray transient V404 Cyg obtained with ULTRACAM. Superimposed on the secondary star's ellipsoidal modulation are large flares on timescales of a few hours, as well as several distinct rapid flares on timescales of tens of mins. The rapid flares, most of which show further variability and unresolved peaks, cover shorter timescales than those reported in previous observations. The power density spectrum (PDS) of the 5 s time-resolution data shows a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) feature at 0.78 mHz (=21.5 min). Assuming this periodicity represents the Keplerian period at the transition between the thin and advective disc regions, we determine the transition radius. We discuss the possible origins for the QPO feature in the context of the advection-dominated accretion flow model. We determine the colour of the large flares and find that the i' band flux per unit frequency interval is larger than that in the g' band. The colour is consistent with optically thin gas with a temperature of ~8000 K arising from a region with an equivalent blackbody radius of at least 2 Ro, which covers 3 percent of the accretion disc's surface. Our timing and spectral analysis results support the idea that the rapid flares (i.e. the QPO feature) most likely arise from regions near the transition radius.

THE TRUNCATED DISK FROM SUZAKU DATA OF GX 339-4 IN THE EXTREME VERY HIGH STATE

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We report on the geometry of accretion disk and high-energy coronae in the strong Comptonization state (the very high/steep power law/hard intermediate state) based on a Suzaku observation of the famous Galactic black hole GX 339-4. These data were taken just before the peak of the 2006-2007 outburst, and the average X-ray luminosity in the 0.7-200 keV band is estimated to be 2.9 Multiplication-Sign 10{sup 38} erg s{sup -1} for a distance of 8 kpc. We fit the spectrum with both simple (independent disk and corona) and sophisticated (energetically coupled disk and corona) models; all fits imply that the underlying optically thick disk is truncated significantly before the innermost stable circular orbit around the black hole. We show this directly by a comparison with similar broadband data from a disk-dominated spectrum at almost the same luminosity observed by XMM-Newton and RXTE 3 days after the Suzaku observation. During the Suzaku observation, the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) frequency changes from 4.3 Hz to 5.5 Hz, while the spectrum softens. The energetically coupled model gives a corresponding 5% {+-} 8% decrease in the derived inner radius of the disk. While this is not significant, it is consistent with the predicted change in QPO frequency from the Lense-Thirring precession of the hot flow interior to the disk and/or a deformation mode of this flow, as a higher QPO frequency implies a smaller size scale for the corona. This is consistent with the truncated disk extending further inward toward the black hole.

Search for gravitational wave radiation associated with the pulsating tail of the SGR 1806-20 hyperflare of 27 December 2004 using LIGO

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We have searched for Gravitational Waves (GWs) associated with the SGR 1806-20 hyperflare of 27 December 2004. This event, originating from a Galactic neutron star, displayed exceptional energetics. Recent investigations of the X-ray light curve's pulsating tail revealed the presence of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the 30 - 2000 Hz frequency range, most of which coincides with the bandwidth of the LIGO detectors. These QPOs, with well-characterized frequencies, can plausibly be attributed to seismic modes of the neutron star which could emit GWs. Our search targeted potential quasi-monochromatic GWs lasting for tens of seconds and emitted at the QPO frequencies. We have observed no candidate signals above a pre-determined threshold and our lowest upper limit was set by the 92.5 Hz QPO observed in the interval from 150 s to 260 s after the start of the flare. This bound corresponds to a (90% confidence) root-sum-squared amplitude h_rssdet^90% = 4.5e-22 strain Hz^-1/2 on the GW waveform strength in the...

Near-Infrared and X-ray Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in Numerical Models of Sgr A*

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We report transient quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) on minute timescales in relativistic, radiative models of the galactic center source Sgr A*. The QPOs result from nonaxisymmetric $m=1$ structure in the accretion flow excited by MHD turbulence. Near-infrared (NIR) and X-ray power spectra show significant peaks at frequencies comparable to the orbital frequency at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) $f_o$. The excess power is associated with inward propagating magnetic filaments inside the ISCO. The amplitudes of the QPOs are sensitive to the electron distribution function. We argue that transient QPOs appear at a range of frequencies in the neighborhood of $f_o$ and that the power spectra, averaged over long times, likely show a broad bump near $f_o$ rather than distinct, narrow QPO features.

QUASI-PERIODIC OSCILLATIONS AND BROADBAND VARIABILITY IN SHORT MAGNETAR BURSTS

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in magnetar giant flares has opened up prospects for neutron star asteroseismology. However, with only three giant flares ever recorded, and only two with data of sufficient quality to search for QPOs, such analysis is seriously data limited. We set out a procedure for doing QPO searches in the far more numerous, short, less energetic magnetar bursts. The short, transient nature of these bursts requires the implementation of sophisticated statistical techniques to make reliable inferences. Using Bayesian statistics, we model the periodogram as a combination of red noise at low frequencies and white noise at high frequencies, which we show is a conservative approach to the problem. We use empirical models to make inferences about the potential signature of periodic and QPOs at these frequencies. We compare our method with previously used techniques and find that although it is on the whole more conservative, it is also more reliable in ruling out false positives. We illustrate our Bayesian method by applying it to a sample of 27 bursts from the magnetar SGR J0501+4516 observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, and we find no evidence for the presence of QPOs in any of the bursts in the unbinned spectra, but do find a candidate detection in the binned spectra of one burst. However, whether this signal is due to a genuine quasi-periodic process, or can be attributed to unmodeled effects in the noise is at this point a matter of interpretation.

The Magneto Hydro Dynamical Model of KHz Quasi Periodic Oscillations in Neutron Star Low Mass X-ray Binaries (II)

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We study the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) with a new magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, in which the compressed magnetosphere is considered. The previous MHD model (Shi \\& Li 2009) is re-examined and the relation between the frequencies of the kHz QPOs and the accretion rate in LMXBs is obtained. Our result agrees with the observations of six sources (4U 0614+09, 4U 1636--53, 4U 1608--52, 4U 1915--15, 4U 1728--34, XTE 1807--294) with measured spins. In this model the kHz QPOs originate from the MHD waves in the compressed magnetosphere. The single kHz QPOs and twin kHz QPOs are produced in two different parts of the accretion disk and the boundary is close to the corotation radius. The lower QPO frequency in a frequency-accretion rate diagram is cut off at low accretion rate and the twin kHz QPOs encounter a top ceiling at high accretion rate due to the restriction of innermost stable circular orbit.

A Possible Rossby Wave Instability Origin for the Flares in Sagittarius A*

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In recent years, near-IR and X-ray flares have been detected from the Galaxy's central radio point source, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), believed to be a \\~3.10^6 solar masses supermassive black hole. In some cases, the transient emission appears to be modulated with a (quasi-)periodic oscillation (QPO) of ~ 17-20 minutes. The implied ~ 3 r_S size of the emitter (where r_S = 2GM/c^2 is the Schwarzschild radius) points to an instability - possibly induced by accretion - near the Marginally Stable Orbit (MSO) of a slowly spinning object. But Sgr A* is not accreting via a large, `standard' disk; instead, the low density environment surrounding it apparently feeds the black hole with low angular momentum clumps of plasma that circularize within ~ 10-300 r_S and merge onto a compact, hot disk. In this Letter, we follow the evolution of the disk following such an event, and show that a Rossby wave instability, particularly in its magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) form, grows rapidly and produces a period of enhanced accretion lasting several hours. Both the amplitude of this response, and its duration, match the observed flare characteristics rather well.

Millihertz QPOs and broad iron line from LMC X-1

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We study the temporal and energy spectral characteristics of the persistent black hole X-ray binary LMC X-1 using two XMM-Newton and a Suzaku observation. We report the discovery of low frequency (~ 26-29 mHz) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We also report the variablity of the broad iron K-alpha line studied earlier with Suzaku. The QPOs are found to be weak with fractional rms amplitude in the ~ 1-2 % range and quality factor Q~2-10 . They are accompanied by weak red noise or zero-centered Lorentzian components with rms variability at the ~ 1-3 % level. The energy spectra consists of three varying components - multicolour disk blackbody (kT_{in} ~ 0.7-0.9 keV), high energy power-law tail (Gamma ~ 2.4 - 3.3) and a broad iron line at 6.4-6.9 keV. The broad iron line, the QPO and the strong power-law component are not always present. The QPOs and the broad iron line appear to be clearly detected in the presence of a strong power-law component. The broad iron line is found to be weaker when the disk is like...

This chapter also analyzes the complex regulatory issues that arise when consider- ing the various alternatives discussed pre- viously. When reviewing this chapter, it is impor- tant to remember the following: in the Purpose and Need discussion in Chapter 2 of this EIS, DOE has described the chal- lenges it faces with its mixed high-level waste (HLW) at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) and its additional
