Managing Information for Sparsely Distributed Articles and Readers: The Virtual Journals of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA)

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The research area of nuclear astrophysics is characterized by a need for information published in tens of journals in several fields and an extremely dilute distribution of researchers. For these reasons it is difficult for researchers, especially students, to be adequately informed of the relevant published research. For example, the commonly employed journal club is inefficient for a group consisting of a professor and his two students. In an attempt to address this problem, we have developed a virtual journal (VJ), a process for collecting and distributing a weekly compendium of articles of interest to researchers in nuclear astrophysics. Subscribers are notified of each VJ issue using an email-list server or an RSS feed. The VJ data base is searchable by topics assigned by the editors, or by keywords. There are two related VJs: the Virtual Journal of Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA VJ), and the SEGUE Virtual Journal (SEGUE VJ). The JINA VJ also serves as a source of new experimental and theoretical information for the JINA REACLIB reaction rate database. References to review articles and popular level articles provide an introduction to the literature for students. The VJs and support information are available at http://groups.nscl.msu.edu/jina/journals

Lekov Received: 28 December 2011 / Accepted: 4 June 2012 / Published online: 28 July 2012 # Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2012 Abstract When government policy-makers propose new policies, they need to assess the costs and benefits of the proposed policy measures to compare them to existing and alternative policies and to rank them accord- ing to their effectiveness. In the case of equipment energy efficiency regulations, comparing the effects of a range of alternative policy measures requires evaluating their effects on consumers' budgets, on national energy con- sumption and economics, and on the environment. A useful methodology to perform such policy analysis should represent in a single framework the characteristics

Comparison of the scientific quality of spanish radiologists that publish in international radiology journals and in Spanish radiology journals

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Objective To determine that the quality, measured by the Hirsch index, of Spanish authors who publish in international radiology journals with an impact factor (AJR, European Radiology, Investigative Radiology, Radiographics, and Radiology) is higher of those who publish only in Spanish journals or in both types of journals. Material and methods We analyzed a total of 6 radiology journals, including 5 international journals and one national (Radiologa). We selected Spanish authors of original articles published in 2008 and 2009 who were working at Spanish centers when their articles were written. We classified the authors into three categories: a) those who published only in international journals; b) those who published only in Radiologa, and c) those who published in Radiologa and in an international journal. We calculated the Hirsch index score for each author and analyzed the groups using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test, the Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric test, and the median test to evaluate the differences. Results Of the 440 identified Spanish authors as having published in the two-year period, 248 (56 %) published only in Radiologa, 172 (39 %) only in international journals, and 20 (5 %) in both. The mean Hirsch index score for the group of authors who published only in Radiologa (1.152.35) was lower than for those who published only in international journals (2.593.39). Authors who published in both international journals and Radiologa had the highest score on the Hirsch index (4.13.89) (P<.001). Conclusions The Spanish authors with the highest prestige and quality publish both in international journals and in Radiologa.

New observations lead us to re-interpret the origin of the sector collapse. We show that it was triggered by failure of active thrust-anticlines in sediments and ignimbrites underlying the volcano. The thrust-anticlines were a result of gravitational spreading of substrata under the volcano load. About 80% of the resulting avalanche deposit is composed of substrata formerly residing under the volcano and in the anticlines. The collapse

The SCOAP3 initiative and the Open Access Article-Processing-Charge market: global partnership and competition improve value in the dissemination of science

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics) initiative is an international partnership to convert to Open Access the published literature in the field of High-Energy Physics (HEP). It has been in operation since January 2014, and is projected to cover about 4000 articles/year. Originally initiated by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, and now counting partners representing 35 countries, SCOAP3 has successfully converted to Open Access all, or part of, 6 HEP journals previously restricted to subscribers. It is also supporting publication of articles in 4 existing Open Access journals. As a Gold Open Access initiative, SCOAP3 pays Article Processing Charges (APCs), as publishers source of revenue for the publication service. Differentiating itself from other Open Access initiatives, SCOAP3 set APCs through a tendering process, correlating quality and price, at consistent conditions across participating publishers. The APCs determined by the SC...

Manifestation and Origin of the Isotope Effect

E-Print Network [OSTI]

This article reviews from one point of view the current status of the manifestations of isotope effect in a nuclear, atomic and molecular as well as solid state physics. Although these manifestations vary, they have one common feature - they all depend on mass. At present time the Standard Model can't explain the origin of the mass of elementary particles and their hierarchy. The last one don't permit to find the origin of the isotope effect.

CHAPMAN*, GERALD R. DICKENS**, BRANDON DUGAN**, and GEORGE J. HIRASAKI* † ABSTRACT. Gas hydrates dominated by methane naturally occur in deep marine sediment along continental margins. These compounds form in pore space between the seafloor and a sub-bottom depth where appropriate stability conditions prevail. However, the amount and distribution of gas hydrate within this zone, and free gas below, can vary significantly at different locations. To understand this variability, we develop a one-dimensional numerical model that simulates the accumulation of gas hydrates in marine sediments due to upward and downward fluxes of methane over time. The model contains rigorous

But one form of "human construction" quietly does its job without making the daily news or creating the slightest bit of noise or inconvenience, unless its machinery goes highly awry. This is the construction that has gone on inside every human cell - and probably every cell that has ever existed - since life began on Earth 3.5 billion years ago. Right now these cellular construction workers, called

Originally deployed in Australia, the next-generation aerosol observing system (AOS) system returned to Brookhaven National Laboratory this summer for an invigorating makeover. With instrument, computer, and infrastructure systems rearranged and updated, and a fresh coat of paint, she is ready to go back out into the field as part of ARM's new Eastern North Atlantic (ENA) site! The AOS left Brookhaven on its journey to Graciosa Island in the Azores where it will obtain in situ measurements of aerosols and their optical properties as part of the new ARM Climate Research Facility fixed site in the Eastern North Atlantic.

External Data Center Gets a Big Boost External Data Center Gets a Big Boost Bookmark and Share In addition to providing database support to the ARM Program, the External Data Center (XDC) identifies and acquires "external" sources of data to augment the data being generated within the program. These external data are transformed from their original received form to data sets of greater value to ARM researchers. These transformations may involve subsetting, merging distinct sets, changing format, averaging, or applying algorithms to produce new geophysical parameters. Recently, a locally attached storage system was added to the XDC production server, removing a significant bottleneck in the data transfer process and improving throughput by more than a factor of two. The storage area on the XDC server is used to collect intermediate files

The Higgs boson was discovered in July of 2012 and is generally understood to be the origin of mass. While those statements are true, they are incomplete. Thermodynamic Origin of Life

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Understanding the thermodynamic function of life may shed light on its origin. Life, as are all irreversible processes, is contingent on entropy production. Entropy production is a measure of the rate of the tendency of Nature to explore available microstates. The most important irreversible process generating entropy in the biosphere, and thus facilitating this exploration, is the absorption and transformation of sunlight into heat. Here we hypothesize that life began, and persists today, as a catalyst for the absorption and dissipation of sunlight at the surface of shallow seas. The resulting heat is then efficiently harvested by other irreversible processes such as the water cycle, hurricanes, and ocean and wind currents. RNA and DNA are the most efficient of all known molecules for absorbing the intense ultraviolet light that could have penetrated the dense early atmosphere, and are remarkably rapid in transforming this light into heat in the presence of liquid water. From this perspective, the origin and evolution of life, inseparable from water and the water cycle, can be understood as resulting from the natural thermodynamic imperative of increasing the entropy production of the Earth in its interaction with its solar environment. A mechanism is proposed for the reproduction of RNA and DNA without the need for enzymes, promoted instead through UV light dissipation and the ambient conditions of prebiotic Earth.
