Product sustainability: organisational considerations

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The paper discusses organisational aspects that need to be considered when developing sustainable products, services and product-services. Managing business sustainability, and within it sustainable solutions development, is a complex and evolving issue and there is no bible that effectively helps companies to do this. To progress towards sustainability, there will need to be a clear vision, commitment, objectives and strategy driven from the top. Organisational structures will need to be created that enable learning and change in a dynamic setting. Higher levels of net sustainable value will need to be delivered through more sustainable solutions based on robust management systems, and this will mean innovation (Charter and Clark, 2003).

Spreadsheet Risk Management in Organisations

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The paper examines in the context of financial reporting, the controls that organisations have in place to manage spreadsheet risk and errors. There has been widespread research conducted in this area, both in Ireland and internationally. This paper describes a study involving 19 participants (2 case studies and 17 by survey) from Ireland. Three areas are examined; firstly, the extent of spreadsheet usage, secondly, the level of complexity employed in spreadsheets, and finally, the controls in place regarding spreadsheets. The findings support previous findings of Panko (1998), that errors occur frequently in spreadsheets and that there is little or unenforced controls employed, however this research finds that attitudes are changing with regard to spreadsheet risk and that one organisation is implementing a comprehensive project regarding policies on the development and control of spreadsheets. Further research could be undertaken in the future to examine the development of a "best practice model" both for t...

Emotions in organisational research in nursing homes

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Emotions clearly play an important role in living and working in nursing homes. Therefore research in cooperation with nursing homes or other long term care settings has to find a way to deal with these phenomena. This paper presents emotions as an integrated part of doing organisational research. The paper draws on transdisciplinary collaborative research with nursing homes on gender, ethical decisions and needs management. Feelings and emotions are core dimensions for knowledge construction and theory building on these issues. Working within a qualitative paradigm and a relational approach, it will be argued that care ethics serves as important source of basic principles.

Challenges and conflicts integrating heterogeneous data warehouses in virtual organisations

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

This paper addresses challenges, which appear when heterogeneous data warehouses are integrated. Such a scenario especially shows up in the environment of virtual organisations. The involved companies, of the before named constellation, need to combine their business data to attain 'one single version of truth' for decisions beyond organisational borders. The occurring issues are depicted and analysed from an exemplary and theoretical point of view. Not only weaknesses, but also reasons for those shortcomings are analysed. The introduction throws a glance at growing data volumes and the derived consequences for the business. Afterwards, a working definition of the term 'virtual organisation' is established and the link and interdependence to information technology is offered. In the following sections schema and mapping conflicts are discussed. The eighth section targets the detection of organisational deficits, which are probably a facilitator for those problems. Moreover, path breaking decisions within a data warehouse integration project are visualised, to provide decision makers with some rough reference points. The paper is completed by a view on the human component and an outlook on in-memory computing.

Sustainable economic organisation: simply a matter of reconceptualisation or a need for a new ethics?

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Today's increasing environmental problems are closely related to how we organise economic activities. This paper departs from the assumption that in order to reach sustainable economic organisation, we must address the dominating Market Discourse (MD), guiding mainstream organising. To understand whether reconceptualisations are sufficient or if changes in underlying ethics are needed, we compare the MD with strong and weak sustainability discourses. The analysis suggests that there is a need for changes in underlying assumptions as well as reconceptualisation of economic organisation that coheres with these assumptions. We also discuss how the related concepts of allocative, governance and throughput efficiency permeates MD, and, as principles for organisation, contribute to the inertia in working towards sustainable economic organisation.

When organisations and ecosystems interact: toward a law of requisite fractality in firms

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Complexity science has evolved greatly in the past 30 years, starting from its European roots in Prigogine's dissipative structures model of phase transitions, continuing through the Santa Fe School's focus on self-organised adaptation as explained through computational simulations, and now to it's most recent focus on power laws and their basis in scale-free causes. After briefly reviewing these three approaches to complex systems, we attempt to integrate them into a broad-based model of organisational design and performance. Our model develops the law of 'requisite fractality' - an updated version of Ashby's original law for organisations in dynamic environments. Implications for organisations and managers are discussed.

Self-organisation Processes In The Carbon ARC For Nanosynthis

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The atmospheric pressure carbon arc in inert gases such as helium is an important method for the production of nanomaterials. It has recently been shown that the formation of the carbon deposit on the cathode from gaseous carbon plays a crucial role in the operation of the arc, reaching the high temperatures necessary for thermionic emission to take place even with low melting point cathodes. Based on observed ablation and deposition rates, we explore the implications of deposit formation on the energy balance at the cathode surface, and show how the operation of the arc is self-organised process. Our results suggest that the can arc operate in two di erent regimes, one of which has an important contribution from latent heat to the cathode energy balance. This regime is characterised by the enhanced ablation rate, which may be favourable for high yield synthesis of nanomaterials. The second regime has a small and approximately constant ablation rate with a negligible contribution from latent heat.

Research on traffic impact analysis and organisation design optimisation for logistics park

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

This paper describes domestic and international research results and proposes a method system of logistics park traffic impact analysis and organisation design optimisation. Firstly, the basis of logistics park traffic impact analysis is studied, project position and impact scope are analysed. Secondly, we forecast logistics park traffic demand and analyse the adaptability of road section and logistics park. Moreover, on the basis of these, the paper confirms the implemental principle of traffic organisation design optimisation, put forward logistics park traffic organisation design optimisation model based on multi-agent and corresponding algorithm based on evolutionary algorithm. Finally, it uses traffic simulation to simulate the traffic flow of logistics park and gives quantitative traffic impact assessment by visual animation, based on these, traffic organisation advices are put forward so that the traffic problems can be effectively resolved. This paper, by using the proposed method before, takes Zhengzhou National Arterial Highway Logistics Park for empirical studies, combines macro planning software TransCAD and micro traffic simulation platform VISSIM to demonstrate the feasibility and workability of the method, it get good results; this can offer the reference to logistics park planning and design.

Service Oriented Architecture in Network Security - a novel Organisation in Security Systems

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Current network security systems are a collection of various security components, which are directly installed in the operating system. These check the whole node for suspicious behaviour. Armouring intrusions e.g. have the ability to hide themselves from being checked. We present in this paper an alternative organisation of security systems. The node is completely virtualized with current virtualization systems so that the operating system with applications and the security system is distinguished. The security system then checks the node from outside and the right security components are provided through a service oriented architecture. Due to the running in a virtual machine, the infected nodes can be halted, duplicated, and moved to other nodes for further analysis and legal aspects. This organisation is in this article analysed and a preliminary implementation showing promising results are discussed.

Human and organisational aspects of remote patient monitoring in residential care homes

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Demographic changes in the population, with a growing proportion of elderly people, make the efficient and effective provision of healthcare for this age group an increasingly important issue. We examine the organisational and human aspects of introducing a Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) system that uses wireless and broadband networks into three residential care homes in the UK. Stakeholders were identified, and semi-structured one-to-one interviews were carried out in order to identify issues deemed most important to each group. The work is novel, as it requires examination of the issues of communication between healthcare workers in several primary and secondary care organisations. The key finding was the need to identify the changes in working practice and interpersonal communication. A key factor in particular was the change in relationships: staff in the remote centre needing to learn to seek support when reporting and requesting assistance for a problem; and for the staff at the health centres to respond appropriately.

Tacit knowledge, organisational memory: expectations and experiences in developing a knowledge warehouse

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Ubiquity, speed, depth and capability to make an impression on the audience are some of the endearing properties that have made the internet a favourite tool to garner competitive advantage. At the same time burgeoning new research in knowledge management has altered traditional understanding of, firstly, conversion of tacit into explicit knowledge, and secondly, limited advantages that this might bring about. The capacity to harness organisational competence by way of some sort of collective memory has remained an unfulfilled goal. The present paper suggests the use of organisational memory as a viable means to develop competitive advantage. The paper then evaluates theoretical findings in the light of the first author's supervisory experiences in developing a knowledge warehouse within the media industry. Existing nondisclosure and confidentiality conditions would mean that a pseudonym of Kaisons would be used to refer to the media company in which evidence for the paper was collected.

Organising for networking and virtual teams ?? the effects of the legal environment

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Networking and teamwork have become increasingly typical ways of organising work in and between companies. These new forms of work provide companies with varying opportunities, but they may also be challenging to organise. One area having an effect on these challenges is legislation that has been developed with the traditional ways of organising work in mind. Indeed, questions related to teamwork are, to a large extent, unregulated in most of the member states of the EU, for example. The problem is that traditional labour law does not necessarily apply too well to new working practices, which, may lead to high levels of uncertainty in managing virtual teams and networking efforts, and makes it harder to be sure that the outcomes are what they are expected to be. This is even more highlighted when networking takes place across country boundaries. The purpose of this study is to examine the legislative environment of networking and teamwork, and especially virtual teams. Our focus is on bringing out potential problems in interpreting and applying labour law to new forms of work. The examination is, to a large extent, based on the evaluation of legislation and theory, and these issues are also illustrated and clarified through a mini case study. Our findings indicate that the lack of explicit legislation for managing virtual teams need not be detrimental, if the firms utilising such forms of work are knowledgeable of legislation and capable of drafting clear contracts.

Tailoring broadband light trapping of GaAs and Si substrates by self-organised nanopatterning

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We report on the formation of high aspect ratio anisotropic nanopatterns on crystalline GaAs (100) and Si (100) substrates exploiting defocused Ion Beam Sputtering assisted by a sacrificial self-organised Au stencil mask. The tailored optical properties of the substrates are characterised in terms of total reflectivity and haze by means of integrating sphere measurements as a function of the morphological modification at increasing ion fluence. Refractive index grading from sub-wavelength surface features induces polarisation dependent anti-reflection behaviour in the visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) range, while light scattering at off-specular angles from larger structures leads to very high values of the haze functions in reflection. The results, obtained for an important class of technologically relevant materials, are appealing in view of photovoltaic and photonic applications aiming at photon harvesting in ultrathin crystalline solar cells.

Development of a sustainable business model for a third sector organisation in achieving business excellence

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The aim of this study is to develop a sustainable business model for a third sector organisation (TSO) in order to be self-reliant and achieve business excellence. This study was carried out through extensive literature review, a comprehensive case study which is supplemented by analysing the case TSO's internal documents, discussions and interviews with its core staff. The study proposes a mixed business model which is driven by both social and economic values. Three strands of 'convergence business ideas' were suggested and 12 factors toolbox was developed. This study supports the need for reform in TSO's funding portfolios, government support in TSO's capacity building in order for the TSOs to be able to actualise the transformation and need for diversification and internationalisation of their existing services.

Impact of the life sciences on organisation and management of R&D in large pharmaceutical firms

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The life sciences are having a significant impact on the organisation and management of R&D in large pharmaceutical firms, as well as restructuring the markets for new therapeutic products. However, there is continuing scepticism about large firms' ability or inclination to build in-house capacity for biologics and extract value from the life sciences. This paper explores the effect of life science innovation on early and late-stage R&D, and considers the implications for strategic management and the transition of compounds through the middle stages of the R&D pathway. The analysis, which includes two company case studies, reveals that new life science technologies have had a marginal impact on late-stage R&D, but companies are exploring new organisational or translational models to better exploit the science and reduce the phase 2 attrition rates. Findings suggest that firms have the capability to adapt to a new innovation trajectory, but external pressures on strategic and organisational management will continue to determine the level and rate of success.

Multi-perspective performance reporting and organisational performance: the impact of information, data and redundant cue load

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Multi-perspective performance reporting systems (MPRS), such as the balanced scorecard (BSC), have become popular. The BSC reports performance about four perspectives (learning and growth, internal business processes, customer and financials). Although these systems are important, research in these areas has only just scratched the surface, hence the motivation for this study. A possible problem with multi-perspective systems is that they may cause information/data/redundant cue (I/D/C) overload and thus detrimentally affect the performance. The objectives of this research are to: (1) explore the relationship between MPRS and organisational performance and (2) study the relationship between I/D/C load and organisational performance in multi-perspective systems. We found that (1) MPRS are positively associated with performance and (2) there is a weak negative association between I/D/C overload and performance. Our exploratory results are consistent with the views of advocates of MPRS (e.g. Kaplan and Norton) that MPRS enhance organisational performance.

On emergent complex behaviour, self-organised criticality and phase transitions in multi-agent systems: autonomy oriented computing (AOC) perspectives

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In a Multi-Agent System (MAS), there usually exist system-level goals that agents are collectively trying to attain. Generally speaking, the local behaviours and performances of individual agents directly determine which global characteristics of an MAS, for example, the global performance and/or patterns, will emerge and how the system-level goals will be attained. In most cases, such a local??global relationship is neither obvious nor straightforward. In this paper, we will address several issues on modelling emergent complex behaviours in MAS. In particular, we will focus on the local??global relationship in a Self-Organising MAS (SOMAS), and discuss the phenomena of Self-Organised Criticality (SOC) and phase transition in SOMAS.

Relationship between organisational value addition and environmental sustainability performance in an Indian pulp and paper manufacturing unit and its supply chain: a longitudinal case study

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Organisations that improve 'value addition' by implementing several initiatives do not verify impact of these initiatives have on environment. The modern sustainability era, demands elimination of environmental impacts, i.e., a positive correlation is expected between value addition and environmental performance on long term basis. Many studies on Corporate Sustainability Management, based on the data at one point of time, did not examine above said relationship. This paper discusses the relationship between value addition and environmental sustainability using ten years data of an Indian Paper Mill. Analysis of the data reveals that there is a negative correlation between value addition and environmental sustainability over the ten-year period.

Quality management organisation, validation of standards, developments and inquiries for solid-recovered fuelsAn overview on the QUOVADIS-Project

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Waste-to-energy solid-recovered fuels (SRFs) are prepared from non-hazardous waste. Their use is regulated under European Union (EU) legislation and requires specifications for commercial or regulatory purposes. \\{SRFs\\} are seen as important contributors to a sustainable EU waste management. Directive 2001/77/EC includes in its scope the production of electricity from biomass, being defined as the biodegradable fraction of products, waste and residues from agriculture, forestry and related industries, as well as the biodegradable fraction of industrial and municipal waste. In this context, the European Commission (EC) gave a mandate to the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) to develop and validate Technical Specification (TS) concerning SRF for energy recovery and to transform these TS into European Standards. To meet these requests, a holistic validation programme covering quality management and the validation exercises for the pre-standards of CEN's Technical Committee on Solid Recovered Fuels (CEN TC 343) was designed and carried out by various members of CEN TC 343, interested non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the EC's Joint Research Centre (JRC). This paper gives an overview about the validation programme called QUOVADIS (from \\{QUality\\} Management Organisation, \\{VAlidation\\} of Standards, Developments and Inquiries for Solid-Recovered Fuels) and the partnership behind it, and highlights some particular aspects in performing the necessary validation work.

Knowledge management practices in project-based organisations

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The paper aims to describe the difficulties in knowledge sharing in project management and suggest solutions to these difficulties. Following a review of knowledge sharing in the literature, workshops are conducted with expert project management practitioners in 2006; in addition, a questionnaire survey of the participants of the workshops is conducted. The study finds that Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) had different knowledge-sharing arrangements from those of Multinational Corporations (MNCs). The work of SMEs was more likely to be based on company-level knowledge sharing and the commitment of employees to projects was less marked. SMEs did not use formal project management systems to manage their projects; rather, they relied on the knowledge of individuals. In all of the companies studied, the most important challenges were cultural how managers enable learning and how people can learn from mistakes most effectively. The structural factors in Knowledge Management (KM) were also of importance. The study is highly context-oriented and local. There is a need for in-depth interviews regarding the conditions of knowledge sharing in project business. The study makes a contribution to a better understanding of the knowledge-sharing conditions in project business in SMEs and MNCs.

Energy efficient node addressing scheme in self-organised sensor networks

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Sensor networks are envisioned to support autonomous and spontaneous networking for a wide range of applications such as environment monitoring. Due to energy constraints, it is difficult for wireless sensor nodes to handle heavy protocol stacks with a large protocol overhead. In this paper, we present a novel address auto configuration scheme, which we call SMallest-size sensor AddRess auToconfiguration scheme (SMART), to configure potential shortest-size local unique addresses for sensor networks with energy efficiency. SMART achieves energy efficiency in three ways. First, it automatically configures node address within a potential smallest address space for a number of sensor nodes, in order to achieve the small address size. Second, it avoids address conflicts during the address configuration. Third, it configures addresses with a small configuration overhead and achieves load balance among sensor nodes.

Managing across boundaries: identity, differentiation and interaction

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The impact of organisational restructuring on organisational boundaries has become increasingly important, especially because modernisation of work practices within large organisations generates increasing boundary complexity. Psychoanalytic theory offers a means of exploring boundaries and emphasises the importance of boundary in the emergence of an integrated sense of identity. In the UK, restructuring of health services has resulted in changes to organisational, professional and work group boundaries, seemingly, without attention being given to what may constitute a healthy set of boundary relationships. Four interrelated case studies illustrate a variety of organisational relationships and cross-boundary processes in mental health services, and how threats to particular boundaries can lead organisational members to engage in defensive activity. Whilst defences may be healthy for the individual or the organisation, they may generate more problems than they solve. Although the examples given here are highly specific, they may illuminate boundary systems more generally within organisations.

The management of nuclear knowledge and expertise for sustainable development

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Knowledge is the key resource of most organisations in today's world. To manage it effectively requires the concept of organisational knowledge rather than simply knowledge that is centered in individuals. This needs to be addressed through the concept of an ''organisational core competency' that has proven itself within many organisations. Hard knowledge can be captured easily but not the nebulous ''tacit learning'' that is embodied in the life-long experience of employees. Some of the more recent methods to capture the tacit learning within organisations are explored.

Manageable inequalities (theoretical landscaping of cross-cultural studies)

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Cross-cultural studies emerged from an unstable consensus. Cultural anthropologists, social psychologists, economists and sociologists of organisations, structured new managerial sciences. Researchers pushed for interdisciplinary compromises. Demands were voiced from 'inside' of formal bureaucracies. Organising and managing in required recognition and utilisation of inequalities ?? providing a pull for re-landscaping theories of cultures and organisations. A quarter of a century after the first publication of Hofstede's 'Culture's Consequences', three major approaches towards theoretical compromise and pragmatic social engineering emerged: the translation, globalisation and 'management of meaning' strategies. All of them converge on manageability of inequalities.

The Pacific Science Association: more than eight decades of science in and of the Pacific

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The Pacific Science Association (PSA), which is dedicated to the science of and in the Pacific, is the oldest Asia-Pacific regional inter-disciplinary science association. The PSA has been an influential organisation in the region over the course of its eight decade history. It has also served as a seedbed for other organisations and projects. The changing contexts of the late 20th century posed challenges for the PSA as they did for other scientific organisations. The complexity of current demographic, environmental and development concerns demands inter-disciplinary approaches to contemporary challenges. The PSA, an inter-disciplinary organisation from its inception, must review its mission, address its policy relevance, adopt new communication strategies and become a scientific resource for the future.

Innovation and the micro-enterprise

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have increasingly been placed under the scholarly microscope, particularly with respect to their capacity for innovation. But how small is small? This paper is concerned with micro-enterprises (those employing fewer than 20 people) which, although they exist in tremendous numbers worldwide, remain largely unexplored by organisational scholars. Using New Zealand micro-enterprises as an illustration, this paper advocates a cognitive approach to developing a greater understanding of innovation in this important class of organisations.

Engines of growth the importance of 'routine innovation activities'

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

This paper adopts a fresh perspective at what companies could do to achieve growth and profitability over the mid- and long-term. Various disciplines of management science have examined the determinants, processes, and consequences of innovation in organisations with mixed and often inconsistent results. While we adopt a perspective of organisational design in innovation management, we differ from conventional approaches in our selecting the free-market economy as the starting point of research. We advocate that organisational design could learn from the system of free-market economy that has been associated with extra-ordinary growth as compared with other economic systems. After analysing the drivers of growth in free-market economy, we discuss the concept of 'routine innovation activities' and its implications from a perspective of organisational design. We advocate that organisations need to be designed with the aim of reaping the growth benefits associated with 'routine activities' and establish a catalogue of principles guiding practitioners of organisational design. The article closes with a case study illustrating the argument.

Technology roadmaps: An evaluation of their success in the renewable energy sector

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Strategy literature has highlighted success factors for technology roadmaps (TRMs). However, as roadmaps have evolved from traditional, single organisation roadmaps, towards multiple organisation, sector level roadmaps their objectives and success criteria have also changed. This paper develops a set of roadmap evaluation metrics, firmly focussed on evaluating the level of success of a roadmap based on whether its objectives have been translated into actions or policies by the target organisation, and uses them to analyse four renewable energy roadmaps to determine the success factors for developing a contemporary multi-organisation roadmap. The analysis revealed a number of success factors distinctly different from those for traditional roadmaps. The study concludes that, alongside the traditional TRM, a new type of roadmap has emerged, whose principal aim is political persuasion. These roadmaps are written by multiple organisations, often at the sector level, to persuade governments that they should implement the actions and recommendations set out. As a result of the emergence of this new type of roadmap, new metrics and guidance are required for roadmap construction compared to traditional roadmaps.

Assessing the business performance measurements for transfusion of TQM and TPM initiatives in the Indian manufacturing industry

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Traditionally, quality and maintenance functions in industries were viewed as just a support function of a business. Improving quality of product being produced was not even cared and managing equipment performance was not a top priority. The inadequacies of the quality as well as maintenance practices in the past have adversely affected organisational competitiveness. The present research is aimed at developing an insight into the prevalent quality maintenance practices adopted in the contemporary Indian manufacturing industry. As the leading Indian manufacturing organisations have taken proactive initiatives to effectively improve the manufacturing by transfusing various lean manufacturing philosophies like TQM, TPM, 5S, Six Sigma, etc. for realising enhanced manufacturing performance. The study reveals that Indian entrepreneurs have been reasonably successful in improving the business performances in the organisations by implementing combination of TQM and TPM, as TQM support to TPM is much effective and this improvement initiative have significantly contributed towards enhancing the overall manufacturing performance.

Thesaurus maintenance, alignment and publication as linked data: the AGROVOC use case

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations is now published as linked data. In order to reach this goal AGROVOC was expressed in Simple Knowledge Organisation System (SKOS) and its concepts provided with dereferenceable URIs. AGROVOC is now aligned with ten other multilingual Knowledge Organisation Systems (KOS) related to agriculture, using the SKOS properties exact match and close match. Alignments were automatically produced in Eclipse using a custom-designed tool and then validated by a domain expert. The resulting data is publicly available to both humans and machines using a SPARQL endpoint together with a modified version of Pubby, a lightweight front-end tool for publishing linked data. This paper describes the process that led to the current linked data AGROVOC and discusses current and future applications and directions. This paper extends a shorter version presented at MTSR 2011.

Knowledge management in continuous product innovation: a contingent approach

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

There is a growing interest in new organisational forms and integrated managerial and technological approaches supporting companies in continuously innovating their products and processes to survive in a turbulent environment. Successful product innovation will more and more depend upon a company's ability to manage knowledge and integrate a growing number of competencies within and outside the organisational boundaries. These abilities require a complex set of interrelated managerial, technological and organisational conditions that must be designed according to the individual firm's characteristics. This paper aims to identify and analyse the relation between individual firms' contingent variables and managerial approaches to foster knowledge management in product innovation. Evidence is based on a survey of 70 companies, including European and Australian firms, developed within the Euro-Australian cooperation project entitled CIMA (Continuous Improvement for global innovation management).

Enhancing management decision making in global enterprises using GIS principles

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Business organisations are increasing their influence and presence throughout the world as domestic economies become oversaturated. Organisations increasingly turn to international commerce to discover new markets. Globalisation requires that firms adapt their management and decision-making practices to recognise localised cultural, political, legal, social, and security requirements. In response, organisations are revamping their decision processes, tailoring them as cultures evolve, political assumptions and realities change, laws are enacted, social issues come to the forefront, and security requirements mature. Traditional decision support systems (DSS) are incapable of readily incorporating localised variables into decision-making processes and must be enhanced. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), have the potential to enhance traditional management decision-making (DSS) tools by adapting them for use in global environments. This paper proposes the melding of GIS and DSS toolsets to create a new framework, hereinafter referred to as Geographically-Enhanced Decision Support Systems (GEDSS), for enhanced management and decision-making for businesses.

A technology roadmap for RFID adoption in supply chains

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) brings a second source of information to enterprise management and adds to information conventionally shared among the various units within, and beyond an organisation's boundary. Fieldwork and case studies reveal the attitudes of organisations toward the sharing of information and the new technology. We propose a technology roadmap to prescribe the technological development necessary to support RFID adoption in supply chains as a three-phase adoption process. The advantages and issues of each phase of adoption are addressed. An analysis provides insight into the crucial factors that must be addressed to realise the benefits of RFID adoption.

Detection of radioxenon in Darwin, Australia following the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract A series of 133Xe detections in April 2011 made at the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) International Monitoring System noble gas station in Darwin, Australia, were analysed to determine the most likely source location. Forward and backwards atmospheric transport modelling simulations using FLEXPART were conducted. It was shown that the most likely source location was the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident. Other potential sources in the southern hemisphere were analysed, including the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) radiopharmaceutical facility, but it was shown that sources originating from these locations were highly unlikely to be the source of the observed 133Xe Darwin detections.

Achieving business process change in the public sector: revolution or evolution?

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

This paper explores the relationship between intranet technology and business process change (BPC) using case studies conducted in two Irish public sector hospitals. The management method used in the two case studies was diametrically opposed ?? one chose an evolutionary implementation, while the other commenced from a revolutionary strategic perspective. Given the unique characteristics of public sector organisations, this paper proposes that evolutionary based development is better positioned to achieve BPC using intranet technology. This is due to the fact that cultural acceptance of the technology is a critical success factor in public sector organisations due to their individual departmental structures.

Regional knowledge dynamics in the biotechnology industry: a conceptual framework for micro-level analysis

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In this paper, we propose a firm-based micro-level framework for the analysis of regional knowledge dynamics. This approach contrasts with most of the established literature on regional clusters, learning regions, industrial districts or Regional Innovation Systems (RISs), which focus mainly on the meso-level of industrial organisation. Contrary to those concepts we are using a biographical method that maps the firm's innovation processes and practices and further on evaluates how those processes are interrelated with intra-organisational change and knowledge flows across different territorial levels.

Marketing, manufacturing and logistics: an empirical examination of their joint effect on company performance

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Companies are complex organisations where a lot of activities have to work properly in order to reach success. Since organisational functions have separate literature and practical knowledge, we do have very little knowledge on how the various functions together contribute to company success. Based on a wide-scale empirical study on Hungarian competitiveness, we examine to what extent three functions of the supply chain, marketing, manufacturing and logistics, can contribute to business success. The results show marketing and manufacturing have larger effect on company performance than logistics. However, the three functions together play a minor, although significant role in company success.
