The Thompson cross section for scattering of electromagnetic waves by a free electron in an expanding universe is derived here. The equations of motion of the electron are obtained using the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann (EIH) surface integral method. These integrals are evaluated approximately by perturbing off an Einstein-deSitter cosmological field. It is found that the Thompson cross section varies with time as the inverse square of the cosmic scale factor R(t).

We investigate the co-nonsolvency of poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide (PNiPAM) in different water-alcohol mixtures and show that this phenomenon is due to two distinct solvation contributions governing the phase behavior of PNiPAM in the water-rich and alcohol-rich regime respectively. While hydrophobic hydration is the predominant contribution governing the phase behavior of PNiPAM in the water-rich regime, the mixing contributions governing the phase behavior of classical polymer solutions determine the phase behavior of PNiPAM in the alcohol-rich regime. This is evidenced by distinct scaling relations denoting the energetic state of the aqueous medium as a key parameter for the phase behavior of PNiPAM in the water-rich regime, while the volume fractions of respectively water, alcohol and PNiPAM become relevant parameters in the alcohol-rich regime. Adding alcohol to water decreases the energetics of the aqueous medium, which gradually suppresses hydrophobic hydration, while adding water to alcohol decreases the solvent quality. Consequently, PNiPAM is insoluble in the intermediate range of solvent composition, where neither hydrophobic hydration nor the mixing contributions prevail. This accounts for the co-nonsolvency phenomenon observed for PNiPAM in water-alcohol mixtures.

We describe a relationship between the representation theory of the Thompson sporadic group and a weakly holomorphic modular form of weight one-half that appears in work of Borcherds and Zagier on Borcherds products and traces of singular moduli. We conjecture the existence of an infinite dimensional graded module for the Thompson group and provide evidence for our conjecture by constructing McKay--Thompson series for each conjugacy class of the Thompson group that coincide with weight one-half modular forms of higher level. We also observe a discriminant property in this moonshine for the Thompson group that is closely related to the discriminant property conjectured to exist in Umbral Moonshine.

In this work we apply Thompson's method (of the dimensions) to study the quantum electrodynamics (QED). This method can be considered as a simple and alternative way to the renormalisation group (R.G) approach and when applied to QED lagrangian is able to obtain the running coupling constant behavior $\\alpha (\\mu)$, namely the dependence of $\\alpha$ on the energy scale. We also obtain the dependence of the mass on the energy scale. The calculations are evaluated just at $d_c=4$, where $d_c$ is the upper critical dimension of the problem, so that we obtain logarithmic behavior both for the coupling $\\alpha$ and the mass $m$ on the energy scale $\\mu$.

The Thompson group elements are the "local scale transformations" of the theory. In a simple case the coefficients of the representations are polynomial invariants of links. We show that all links arise and introduce new "oriented" subgroups $\\overrightarrow F

  3. Asymptotic freedom and quarks confinement treated through Thompson's approach

In this work,we firstly use Thompson's renormalization group method to treat QCD-vacuum behavior close to the regime of asymptotic freedom. QCD-vacuum behaves effectively like a "paramagnetic system" of a classical theory in the sense that virtual color charges (gluons) emerge in it as spin effect of a paramagnetic material when a magnetic field aligns their microscopic magnetic dipoles. Making a classical analogy with the paramagnetism of Landau's theory,we are able to introduce a kind of Landau effective action without temperature and phase transition for simply representing QCD-vacuum behavior at higher energies as magnetization of a paramagnetic material in the presence of a magnetic field H. This reasoning allows us to use Thompson's heuristic approach in order to extract an "effective susceptibility" ($\\chi>0$) of QCD-vacuum. It depends on logarithmic of energy scale u to investigate hadronic matter. Consequently,we are able to get an "effective magnetic permeability" ($\\mu>1$) of such a "paramagnetic vacuum". As QCD-vacuum must obey Lorentz invariance, the attainment of $\\mu>1$ must simply require that the "effective electrical permissivity" is $\\epsilon<1$,in such a way that $\\mu\\epsilon=1$ (c^2=1).This leads to the antiscreening effect, where the asymptotic freedom takes place. On the other hand, quarks cofinement,a subject which is not treatable by perturbative calculations,is worked by the present approach. We apply the method to study this subject in order to obtain the string constant, which is in agreement with experimental results.

In this work we apply Thompson's method (of the dimensions and scales) to study some features of the Quantum Electro and Chromodynamics. This heuristic method can be considered as a simple and alternative way to the Renormalisation Group (R.G.) approach and when applied to QED-lagrangian is able to obtain in a first approximation both the running coupling constant behavior of alpha(mu) and the mass m(mu). The calculations are evaluated just at d_c=4, where d_c is the upper critical dimension of the problem, so that we obtain the logarithmic behavior both for the coupling alpha and the excess of mass Delta m on the energy scale mu. Although our results are well-known in the vast literature of field theories,it seems that one of the advantages of Thompson's method, beyond its simplicity is that it is able to extract directly from QED-lagrangian the physical (finite) behavior of alpha(mu) and m(mu), bypassing hard problems of divergences which normally appear in the conventional renormalisation schemes applied to field theories like QED. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is also treated by the present method in order to obtain the quark condensate value. Besides this, the method is also able to evaluate the vacuum pressure at the boundary of the nucleon. This is done by assumming a step function behavior for the running coupling constant of the QCD, which fits nicely to some quantities related to the strong interaction evaluated through the MIT-bag model.

The Golden-Thompson inequality, Tr?(e{sup A+B}) ? Tr?(e{sup A}e{sup B}) for A, B Hermitian matrices, appeared in independent works by Golden and Thompson published in 1965. Both of these were motivated by considerations in statistical mechanics. In recent years the Golden-Thompson inequality has found applications to random matrix theory. In this article, we detail some historical aspects relating to Thompson's work, giving in particular a hitherto unpublished proof due to Dyson, and correspondence with Plya. We show too how the 2 2 case relates to hyperbolic geometry, and how the original inequality holds true with the trace operation replaced by any unitarily invariant norm. In relation to the random matrix applications, we review its use in the derivation of concentration type lemmas for sums of random matrices due to Ahlswede-Winter, and Oliveira, generalizing various classical results.

A Cox-Thompson fixed-energy quantum inverse scattering method is developed further to treat long-range Coulomb interaction. Depending on the reference potentials chosen, two methods have been formulated which produce inverse potentials with singular or finite value at the origin. Based on the quality of reproduction of input experimental phase shifts, it is guessed that the p-alpha interaction possesses an interesting repulsive hard core.

    2007-07-25T23:59:59.000Z

Riverscreen irrigation pumps are a relatively new design in which the pump intake floats on the river surface, pulling water in only from the bottom side and surrounded by a self-cleaning screen. The Walla Walla County Conservation District recently started replacing old pump screens with the Riverscreen and was interested in whether the screens are protective of juvenile salmonids. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory evaluated approach velocities and operations at the Riverscreen installation on the Dallas Thompson property, approximately 3 mi. north of Touchet, Washington and 300 ft north of Hofer Dam, on June 18, 2007. Evaluation of this site consisted of underwater videography and water velocity measurements. The Dallas Thompson Riverscreen was pumping approximately 930 gpm during our evaluation, which is close to the maximum pumping rate for this model. Underwater videography showed only slow movement of water-borne particulates toward the pump intake, and the screen material was clean. All water velocity measurements were taken below the pump intake opening and between 3 to 6 in. from the screen face. All approach velocities (flow toward the screen and pump) were below National Marine Fisheries Service draft guidelines for juvenile fish screens.

    2010-02-08T23:59:59.000Z

We argue that the Quadratic Spinor Lagrangian approach allows us to approach the problem of forming a geometrical condensate of spinorial tetrads in a natural manner. This, along with considerations involving the discrete symmetries of lattice triangulations, lead us to discover that the quasiparticles of such a condensate are tetrahedra with braids attached to its faces and that these braid attachments correspond to the preons in Bilson-Thompson's model of elementary particles. These "spatoms" can then be put together in a tiling to form more complex structures which encode both geometry and matter in a natural manner. We conclude with some speculations on the relation between this picture and the computational universe hypothesis.

  12. Thompson's renormalization group method applied to QCD at high energy scale

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    Claudio Nassif; J. A. Helayel-Neto; P. R. Silva

    2007-08-16T23:59:59.000Z

We use a renormalization group method to treat QCD-vacuum behavior specially closer to the regime of asymptotic freedom. QCD-vacuum behaves effectively like a "paramagnetic system" of a classical theory in the sense that virtual color charges (gluons) emerges in it as a spin effect of a paramagnetic material when a magnetic field aligns their microscopic magnetic dipoles. Due to that strong classical analogy with the paramagnetism of Landau's theory,we will be able to use a certain Landau effective action without temperature and phase transition for just representing QCD-vacuum behavior at higher energies as being magnetization of a paramagnetic material in the presence of a magnetic field $H$. This reasoning will allow us to apply Thompson's approach to such an action in order to extract an "effective susceptibility" ($\\chi>0$) of QCD-vacuum. It depends on logarithmic of energy scale $u$ to investigate hadronic matter. Consequently we are able to get an ``effective magnetic permeability" ($\\mu>1$) of such a "paramagnetic vacuum". Actually,as QCD-vacuum must obey Lorentz invariance, the attainment of $\\mu>1$ must simply require that the "effective electrical permissivity" is $\\epsilon<1$ in such a way that $\\mu\\epsilon=1$ ($c^2=1$). This leads to the anti-screening effect where the asymptotic freedom takes place. We will also be able to extend our investigation to include both the diamagnetic fermionic properties of QED-vacuum (screening) and the paramagnetic bosonic properties of QCD-vacuum (anti-screening) into the same formalism by obtaining a $\\beta$-function at 1 loop, where both the bosonic and fermionic contributions are considered.

Tamas Palmai; Miklos Horvath; Barnabas Apagyi

    2011-11-25T23:59:59.000Z

Solution of the Cox-Thompson inverse scattering problem at fixed energy [1,2,3] is reformulated resulting in semi-analytic equations. The new set of equations for the normalization constants and the nonphysical (shifted) angular momenta are free of matrix inversion operations. This simplification is a result of treating only the input phase shifts of partial waves of a given parity. Therefore, the proposed method can be applied for identical particle scattering of the bosonic type (or for certain cases of identical fermionic scattering). The new formulae are expected to be numerically more efficient than the previous ones. Based on the semi-analytic equations an approximate method is proposed for the generic inverse scattering problem, when partial waves of arbitrary parity are considered.

    2000-04-27T23:59:59.000Z

In this work we propose an action to describe diffusion limited chemical reactions belonging to various classes of universality. This action is treated through Thompson's approach and can encompass both cases where we have segregation as in the $A+B\\to 0$ reaction, as well the simplest one, namely the $A+A\\to 0$ reaction .Our results for long time and long wavelength behaviors of the species concentrations and reaction rates agree with exact results of Peliti for $A+A\\to 0$ reaction and rigorous results of Bramson and Lebowitz for $A+B\\to 0$ reaction, with equal initial concentrations. The different classes of universality are reflected by the obtained upper critical dimensions varying continuously from $d_{c}=2$ in the first case to $d_{c}=4$ in the last one. Just at the upper critical dimensions we find universal logarithmic corrections to the mean field behavior.

    B. Geyer; D. Mlsch

    2003-04-29T23:59:59.000Z

The higher dimensional analogue of the Blau-Thompson model in D=5 is constructed by a N_T=1 topological twist of N=2, D=5 super Yang-Mills theory. Its dimenional reduction to D=4 and D=3 gives rise to the B-model and N_T=4 equivariant extension of the Blau-Thompson model, respectively. A further dimensional reduction to D=2 provides another example of a N_T=8 Hodge-type cohomological theory with global symmetry group SU(2) \\otimes \\bar SU(2). Moreover, it is shown that this theory possesses actually a larger global symmetry group SU(4) and and that it agrees with the N_T=8 topological twisting of N+16, D=2 super Yang-Mills theory.

This is the report on Task IB, Familiarization with Additional Data Collection Plans of Annual Survey of BOMA Member and Non-Member Buildings in 20 Cities, of the Energy Use in Office Buildings project. The purpose of the work was to monitor and understand the efforts of the Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA) in gathering an energy-use-oriented data base. In order to obtain an improved data base encompassing a broad spectrum of office space and with information suitable for energy analysis in greater detail than is currently available, BOMA undertook a major data-collection effort. Based on a consideration of geographic area, climate, population, and availability of data, BOMA selected twenty cities for data collection. BOMA listed all of the major office space - buildings in excess of 40,000 square feet - in each of the cities. Tax-assessment records, local maps, Chamber of Commerce data, recent industrial-development programs, results of related studies, and local-realtor input were used in an effort to assemble a comprehensive office-building inventory. In order to verify the accuracy and completeness of the building lists, BOMA assembled an Ad-Hoc Review Committee in each city to review the assembled inventory of space. A questionnaire on office-building energy use and building characteristics was developed. In each city BOMA assembled a data collection team operating under the supervision of its regional affiliate to gather the data. For each city a random sample of buildings was selected, and data were gathered. Responses for over 1000 buildings were obtained.

This document has been prepared by the Department of Energy`s (DOE) Environmental Management (EM) Office of Technology Development (OTD) to highlight its research, development, demonstration, testing, and evaluation (RDDT and E) activities funded through the Chicago Operations Office. Technologies and processes described have the potential to enhance DOE`s cleanup and waste management efforts, as well as improve US Industry`s competitiveness in global environmental markets. The information has been assembled from recently produced OTD documents which highlight technology development activities within each of the OTD program elements. OTD technologies addresses three specific problem areas: (1) groundwater and soils cleanup; (2) waste retrieval and processing; and (3) pollution prevention. These problems are not unique to DOE, but are associated with other Federal agency and industry sites as well. Thus, technical solutions developed within OTD programs will benefit DOE, and should have direct applications in outside markets.

N=2 topological gauge theory; the Euler characteristic of moduli spaces; the Casson invariant

    1991-12-05T23:59:59.000Z

We discuss gauge theory with a topological N=2 symmetry. This theory captures the de Rham complex and Riemannian geometry of some underlying moduli space $\\cal M$ and the partition function equals the Euler number of $\\cal M$. We explicitly deal with moduli spaces of instantons and of flat connections in two and three dimensions. To motivate our constructions we explain the relation between the Mathai-Quillen formalism and supersymmetric quantum mechanics and introduce a new kind of supersymmetric quantum mechanics based on the Gauss-Codazzi equations. We interpret the gauge theory actions from the Atiyah-Jeffrey point of view and relate them to supersymmetric quantum mechanics on spaces of connections. As a consequence of these considerations we propose the Euler number of the moduli space of flat connections as a generalization to arbitrary three-manifolds of the Casson invariant. We also comment on the possibility of constructing a topological version of the Penner matrix model.

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Wood, Marilyn

    1984-03-27T23:59:59.000Z

The Thompson Falls Dam inundated approximately 347 acres of wildlife habitat that likely included conifer forests, deciduous bottoms, mixed conifer-deciduous forests and grassland/hay meadows. Additionally, at least one island, and several gravel bars were inundated when the river was transformed into a reservoir. The loss of riparian and riverine habitat adversely affected the diverse wildlife community inhabiting the lower Clark Fork River area. Quantitative loss estimates were determined for selected target species based on best available information. The loss estimates were based on inundation of the habitat capable of supporting the target species. Whenever possible, loss estimates bounds were developed by determining ranges of impacts based on density estimates and/or acreage loss estimates. Of the twelve target species or species groups, nine were assessed as having net negative impacts. 86 refs., 2 figs., 5 tabs.
