Meet Cheryl Martin, Acting Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy (ARPA-E) and the latest profile in the Energy Department's #WomenInSTEM video series. Cheryl looks at transformational projects to explore the uncharted territories of energy technology to generate options for entirely new paths to create, store and use energy. There are many challenges to overcome in the energy field, and it's important to have a diverse set of voices in STEM careers to meet these demands. Cheryl recommends that young women include all the skills they have - those gained at formal jobs as well as through volunteering or nonprofit organizations - when they take their next career step. These skills form the stepping stones that lead from one career to the next. And with a solid grounding in STEM, the opportunities are endless.

Cheryl Kuske-Microbiology expertise aids in biothreat detection March 14, 2014 Microbiology expertise aids in biothreat detection The soil beneath our feet may seem inanimate, but it houses trillions of microscopic organisms that break down matter such as fallen trees and dead leaves, protect (and even prey on) crops and filter groundwater. One gram of soil may contain at least a billion microorganisms; critically important to the ecological system, less than one percent of these organisms have

  14. The nature of Martian fluids based on mobile element studies in salt-assemblages from Martian meteorites

The S, Cl, and Br abundances determined in salt assemblages in Nakhla and Lafayette olivine fracture fillings and in gas-rich impact-melt (GRIM) glasses from Shergotty and EET79001 Lithologies A & B using EMPA/EDS/APS X-ray Microprobe techniques are compared with the S and Cl abundances determined by Gooding and coworkers in similar samples using quadrupole mass-spectrometric techniques. All the analytical methods yield relatively high Cl and low SO{sub 3} abundances in Nakhla indicating a SO{sub 3}/Cl ratio of {approx}0.2. The same ratio in Lafayette secondary salts seems to be {approx}2. In the case of GRIM glasses from Shergotty and EET79001 Lith A & Lith B, the SO{sub 3} abundance is found to be high whereas the Cl abundance is low yielding a SO{sub 3}/Cl ratio of {approx}5--300 (large errors are associated with these ratios because of low Cl signals). The salts found in Nakhla fracturefillings are inferred to have formed from Cl-rich fluids (high pH) near nakhlite source region on Mars, whereas the secondary minerals found in shergottite GRIM glasses seem to be associated with SO{sub 3}-rich fluids (low pH) near shergottite source region on Mars. The Cl-rich fluids seem to have infiltrated into the nakhlite source region {approx}600 Ma ago, whereas the SO{sub 3}-rich fluids likely percolated into the shergottite source region at {approx}180 Ma (or less) suggesting the possible existence of two types of fluid sources on Mars.

Technical success is one thing, but commercial success is another. ARPA-E’s unique Technology-to-Market program was designed to help our awardees move their research out of the lab and into the market, accelerating the adoption of potentially game-changing technologies. The Technology-to-Market team is dedicated to the common goal of answering the fundamental question: if it works, will it matter? Featuring remarks from Cheryl Martin, ARPA-E’s Deputy Director for Commercialization, as well as interviews with three members of the Technology-to-Market team, this video demonstrates ARPA-E’s commitment to both the development and deployment of transformational energy technologies. The video also incorporates footage shot on site with several ARPA-E awardees, much of which will be highlighted in other videos shown throughout the 2015 ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit.

  18. Cross-Linked Conjugated Polymer Fibrils: Robust Nanowires from Functional Polythiophene Diblock Copolymers

A series of poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT)-based diblock copolymers were prepared and examined in solution for their assembly into fibrils, and post-assembly cross-linking into robust nanowire structures. P3HT-b-poly(3-methanol thiophene) (P3MT), and P3HT-b-poly(3-aminopropyloxymethyl thiophene) (P3AmT) diblock copolymers were synthesized using Grignard metathesis (GRIM) polymerization. Fibrils formed from solution assembly of these copolymers are thus decorated with hydroxyl and amine functionality, and cross-linking is achieved by reaction of diisocyanates with the hydroxyl and amine groups. A variety of cross-linked structures, characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), were produced by this method, including dense fibrillar sheets, fibril bundles, or predominately individual fibrils, depending on the chosen reaction conditions. In solution, the cross-linked fibrils maintained their characteristic vibronic structure in solvents that would normally disrupt (dissolve) the structures.

Summary of SMIRT20 Preconference Topical Workshop – Identifying Structural Issues in Advanced Reactors William Richins1, Stephen Novascone1, and Cheryl O’Brien1 1Idaho National Laboratory, US Dept. of Energy, Idaho Falls, Idaho, USA, e-mail: William.Richins@inl.gov The Idaho National Laboratory (INL, USA) and IASMiRT sponsored an international forum Nov 5-6, 2008 in Porvoo, Finland for nuclear industry, academic, and regulatory representatives to identify structural issues in current and future advanced reactor design, especially for extreme conditions and external threats. The purpose of this Topical Workshop was to articulate research, engineering, and regulatory Code development needs. The topics addressed by the Workshop were selected to address critical industry needs specific to advanced reactor structures that have long lead times and can be the subject of future SMiRT technical sessions. The topics were; 1) structural/materials needs for extreme conditions and external threats in contemporary (Gen. III) and future (Gen. IV and NGNP) advanced reactors and 2) calibrating simulation software and methods that address topic 1 The workshop discussions and research needs identified are presented. The Workshop successfully produced interactive discussion on the two topics resulting in a list of research and technology needs. It is recommended that IASMiRT communicate the results of the discussion to industry and researchers to encourage new ideas and projects. In addition, opportunities exist to retrieve research reports and information that currently exists, and encourage more international cooperation and collaboration. It is recommended that IASMiRT continue with an off-year workshop series on select topics.
