Measurements with wire mesh stacks in thermoacoustic prime movers.

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Measurements with various wire mesh stacks in two different thermoacoustic prime movers are presented. Stirling engine regenerators are commonly constructed by stacking disks cut from wire mesh (i.e. wire cloth or wire screen) in a tube. In addition to simplicity this has two advantages for prime movers. First the wire is relatively impervious to moderately high temperatures and second the effective thermal conductivity of the structure is one to two orders of magnitude lower than a comparable metal parallel plate structure. Since no linear theoretical thermoacoustic models exist for these wire mesh stacks this approach is simply to measure the performance of several different mesh stacks. Initial results indicate reasonably good onset temperature and amplitude performance. [Work supported by Office of Naval Research.

Experimental study and analysis on components of a thermoacoustic refrigerator and thermoacoustic prime mover

SciTech Connect

A thermoacoustic refrigerator and a thermoacoustic prime mover, due to its simple structure, would serve as very desirable systems because thermoacoustic prime movers can be driven with the waste heat such as an exhaust gas from engines, and with heat from the nature such as sunlight and a geothermal heat. The thermoacoustic refrigerator and the thermoacoustic prime mover combined would serve as a perfect cooling system without moving parts, CFC's and HFC's. Thus this Thermoacoustic-driven Thermoacoustic Refrigerator will replace the previous paper compression refrigeration system. The authors set up the thermoacoustic refrigerator and thermoacoustic prime mover to investigate the fundamental characteristics. On the refrigerator tests, dimensions of the stack are varied as a parameter of experiments. As a result, influences of the stack configuration on the performance are confirmed, so the design method for the optimum dimension to attain the large temperature difference can be indicated. About the prime mover tests, fundamental characteristics of stack dimensions is checked. The way to improve the thermal efficiency of the prime mover is mentioned in terms of the operating condition. Numerical calculations about the refrigerator are made which is based on the enthalpy flow model by Radebaugh. The result of calculations has a good agreement in quality with the experimental results, so the propriety of this model is confirmed.

GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTION POTENTIAL WITH COMBINED HEAT AND POWER WITH DISTRIBUTED GENERATION PRIME MOVERS - ASME 2012

SciTech Connect

Pending or recently enacted greenhouse gas regulations and mandates are leading to the need for current and feasible GHG reduction solutions including combined heat and power (CHP). Distributed generation using advanced reciprocating engines, gas turbines, microturbines and fuel cells has been shown to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) compared to the U.S. electrical generation mix due to the use of natural gas and high electrical generation efficiencies of these prime movers. Many of these prime movers are also well suited for use in CHP systems which recover heat generated during combustion or energy conversion. CHP increases the total efficiency of the prime mover by recovering waste heat for generating electricity, replacing process steam, hot water for buildings or even cooling via absorption chilling. The increased efficiency of CHP systems further reduces GHG emissions compared to systems which do not recover waste thermal energy. Current GHG mandates within the U.S Federal sector and looming GHG legislation for states puts an emphasis on understanding the GHG reduction potential of such systems. This study compares the GHG savings from various state-of-the- art prime movers. GHG reductions from commercially available prime movers in the 1-5 MW class including, various industrial fuel cells, large and small gas turbines, micro turbines and reciprocating gas engines with and without CHP are compared to centralized electricity generation including the U.S. mix and the best available technology with natural gas combined cycle power plants. The findings show significant GHG saving potential with the use of CHP. Also provided is an exploration of the accounting methodology for GHG reductions with CHP and the sensitivity of such analyses to electrical generation efficiency, emissions factors and most importantly recoverable heat and thermal recovery efficiency from the CHP system.

Threshold condition for traveling wave excitation in an annular prime?mover

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The threshold condition for thermoacoustic instability in an annular prime?mover is derived. The region of spatially inhomogeneous temperature distribution (due to the presence of a stack and hot and cold heat exchangers) is assumed to be acoustically thin. The interaction of acoustic waves with the stack is assumed to be quasiadiabatic. Theoretical approach (based on the transformation of differential wave equation into Volterra integral equation which is solved by iterative procedure) is valid for arbitrary spatial temperature distribution. Nevertheless it was found that the threshold for the excitation of a traveling acoustic wave does not depend on the details of temperature spatial distribution but just on the ratio of the temperatures of hot and cold heat exchangers. Moreover the critical temperature ratio does not depend on the thickness of the stack if the acoustic losses inside the heated region are negligible in comparison with acoustic losses in the rest part of the annular system. In this important limiting case critical temperature ratio diminishes when the dimensions of the system are scaled up. [Work supported by DGA.

Simulation studies on the standing and traveling wave thermoacoustic prime movers

SciTech Connect

Thermoacoustic systems have been a focus of recent research due to its structural simplicity, high reliability due to absence of moving parts, and can be driven by low grade energy such as fuel, gas, solar energy, waste heat etc. There has been extensive research on both standing wave and traveling wave systems. Towards the development of such systems, simulations can be carried out by several methods such as (a) solving the energy equation, (b) enthalpy flow model, (c) DeltaEC, a free software available from LANL, USA (d) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) etc. We present here the simulation studies of standing wave and traveling wave thermoacoustic prime movers using CFD and DeltaEC. The CFD analysis is carried out using Fluent 6.3.26, incorporating the necessary boundary conditions with different working fluids at different operating pressures. The results obtained by CFD are compared with those obtained using DeltaEC. Also, the CFD simulation of the thermoacoustically driven refrigerator is presented.

Magic state distillation in all prime dimensions using quantum Reed-Muller codes

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We propose families of protocols for magic state distillation -- important components of fault tolerance schemes --- for systems of odd prime dimension. Our protocols utilize quantum Reed-Muller codes with transversal non-Clifford gates. We find that in higher dimensions smaller codes can be used than one might expect based on qubit codes. All our protocols produce magic states at a resource cost that increases only polynomially with the inverse of the final ouput error probability. We give specific details for 3-dimensional systems, where we find that certain magic states can be distilled provided an initial error probability of less than 20.02% or a depolarizing noise rate of less than 31.7%. This is the largest error probability threshold of all known protocols with polynomial resource cost. For a depolarizing noise model we also give distillation thresholds for odd prime dimensions up-to 19.

Quadratic Primes

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The subset of quadratic primes {p = an^2 + bn + c : n => 1} generated by an irreducible polynomial f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c over the integers is widely believed to be an unbounded subset of prime numbers. This note provides the details of a possible proof of this quadratic primes counting problem. In particular, it is shown that the cardinality of the simplest subset of quadratic primes {p = n^2 + 1 : n => 1} is infinite.

This paper presents an investigation into integrated wind + combustion engine high penetration electrical generation systems. Renewable generation systems are now a reality of electrical transmission. Unfortunately, many of these renewable energy supplies are stochastic and highly dynamic. Conversely, the existing national grid has been designed for steady state operation. The research team has developed an algorithm to investigate the feasibility and relative capability of a reciprocating internal combustion engine to directly integrate with wind generation in a tightly coupled Hybrid Energy System. Utilizing the Idaho National Laboratory developed Phoenix Model Integration Platform, the research team has coupled demand data with wind turbine generation data and the Aspen Custom Modeler reciprocating engine electrical generator model to investigate the capability of reciprocating engine electrical generation to balance stochastic renewable energy.

Fuel supply system and method for coal-fired prime mover

DOE Patents (OSTI)

A coal-fired gas turbine engine is provided with an on-site coal preparation and engine feeding arrangement. With this arrangement, relatively large dry particles of coal from an on-site coal supply are micro-pulverized and the resulting dry, micron-sized, coal particulates are conveyed by steam or air into the combustion chamber of the engine. Thermal energy introduced into the coal particulates during the micro-pulverizing step is substantially recovered since the so-heated coal particulates are fed directly from the micro-pulverizer into the combustion chamber.

The 4 phase VSR motor: The ideal prime mover for electric vehicles

SciTech Connect

4 phase variable switched reluctance motors are gaining acceptance in many applications due to their fault tolerant characteristics. A 4 phase variable switched reluctance motor (VSR) is modelled and its performance is predicted for several operating points for an electric vehicle application. The 4 phase VSR offers fault tolerance, high performance, and an excellent torque to weight ratio. The actual system performance was measured both on a teststand and on an actual vehicle. While the system described is used in a production electric motorscooter, the technology is equally applicable for high efficiency electric cars and buses. 4 refs.

On existence of infinite primes and infinite twin primes

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The twin primes conjecture is a very old problem. Tacitly it is supposed that the primes it deals with are finite. In the present paper we consider three problems that are not related to finite primes but deal with infinite integers. The main tool of our investigation is a numeral system proposed recently that allows one to express various infinities and infinitesimals easily and by a finite number of symbols. The problems under consideration are the following and for all of them we give affermative answers: (i) do infinite primes exist? (ii) do infinite twin primes exist? (ii) is the set of infinite twin primes infinite? Examples of these three kinds of objects are given.

Prime number generation and factor elimination

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We have presented a multivariate polynomial function termed as factor elimination function,by which, we can generate prime numbers. This function's mapping behavior can explain the irregularities in the occurrence of prime numbers on the number line. Generally the different categories of prime numbers found till date, satisfy the form of this function. We present some absolute and probabilistic conditions for the primality of the number generated by this method. This function is capable of leading to highly efficient algorithms for generating prime numbers.

This note presents a result on the maximal prime gap of the form p_(n+1) - p_n 0 is a constant, for any arbitrarily small real number e > 0, and all sufficiently large integer n > n_0. Equivalently, the result shows that any short interval [x, x + y], y => C(log x)^(1+e), contains prime numbers for all sufficiently large real numbers x => x_0 unconditionally. An application demonstrates that a prime p => x > 2 can be determined in deterministic polynomial time O(log(x)^8).

Observation of $?^{\\prime}\\to?^{+}?^{-}?^{+}?^{-}$ and $?^{\\prime}\\to?^{+}?^{-}?^{0}?^{0}$

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Using a sample of $1.3\\times 10^9$ $J/\\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of $\\eta^{\\prime}\\to\\pi^{+}\\pi^{-}\\pi^{+}\\pi^{-}$ and $\\eta^{\\prime}\\to\\pi^{+}\\pi^{-}\\pi^{0}\\pi^{0}$. The measured branching fractions are $\\mathcal{B}$($\\eta^{\\prime}\\to\\pi^{+}\\pi^{-}\\pi^{+}\\pi^{-}$) = $(8.53\\pm0.69({\\rm stat.})\\pm0.64({\\rm syst.}))\\times10^{-5}$ and $\\mathcal{B}$($\\eta^{\\prime}\\to\\pi^{+}\\pi^{-}\\pi^{0}\\pi^{0}$) = $(1.82\\pm0.35({\\rm stat.})\\pm0.18({\\rm syst.}))\\times10^{-4}$, which are consistent with theoretical predictions based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and vector-meson dominance.

Phase transition in a stochastic prime-number generator

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

We introduce a stochastic algorithm that acts as a prime-number generator. The dynamics of this algorithm gives rise to a continuous phase transition, which separates a phase where the algorithm is able to reduce a whole set of integers into primes and a phase where the system reaches a frozen state with low prime density. We present both numerical simulations and an analytical approach in terms of an annealed approximation, by means of which the data are collapsed. A critical slowing-down phenomenon is also outlined.

Is there quantum chaos in the prime numbers?

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A statistical analysis of the prime numbers indicates possible traces of quantum chaos. We have computed the nearest neighbor spacing distribution, number variance, skewness, and excess for sequences of the first N primes for various values of N. All four statistical measures clearly show a transition from random matrix statistics at small N toward Poisson statistics at large N. In addition, the number variance saturates at large lengths as is common for eigenvalue sequences. This data can be given a physical interpretation if the primes are thought of as eigenvalues of a quantum system whose classical dynamics is chaotic at low energy but regular at high energy. We discuss some difficulties with this interpretation in an attempt to clarify what kind of physical system might have the primes as its quantum eigenvalues.

They can serve as a proving ground for future standards, and incorporate elements beyond the scope of the model energy codes, such as water and resource efficiency. As regional and national green building codes and programs become more available, they provide jurisdictions with another tool for guiding construction and development in an overall less impactful, more sustainable manner. Power spectrum of the fluctuation of Chebyshev's prime counting function

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The one-sided power spectrum of the fluctuation of Chebyshev's weighted prime counting function is numerically estimated based on samples of the fluctuating function of different sizes. The power spectrum is also estimated analytically for large frequency based on Riemann hypothesis and the exact formula for the fluctuating function in terms of all the non-trivial Riemann zeroes. Our analytical estimate is consistent with our numerical estimate of a 1/f^2 power spectrum.

Detection and discrimination of the periodicity of prime numbers by discrete Fourier transform

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A novel representation of a quasi-periodic modified von Mangoldt function L(n) on prime numbers and its decomposition into Fourier series has been investigated. We focus on some particular quantities characterizing the modified von Mangoldt function. The results indicate that prime number progression can be decomposed into periodic sequences. The main approach is to decompose it into sin or cosine function. Basically, it is applied to extract hidden periodicities in seemingly quasi periodic prime function. Numerical evidences were provided to confirm the periodic distribution of primes.

Computing prime factors with a Josephson phase qubit quantum processor

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A quantum processor (QuP) can be used to exploit quantum mechanics to find the prime factors of composite numbers[1]. Compiled versions of Shor's algorithm have been demonstrated on ensemble quantum systems[2] and photonic systems[3-5], however this has yet to be shown using solid state quantum bits (qubits). Two advantages of superconducting qubit architectures are the use of conventional microfabrication techniques, which allow straightforward scaling to large numbers of qubits, and a toolkit of circuit elements that can be used to engineer a variety of qubit types and interactions[6, 7]. Using a number of recent qubit control and hardware advances [7-13], here we demonstrate a nine-quantum-element solid-state QuP and show three experiments to highlight its capabilities. We begin by characterizing the device with spectroscopy. Next, we produces coherent interactions between five qubits and verify bi- and tripartite entanglement via quantum state tomography (QST) [8, 12, 14, 15]. In the final experiment, we run a three-qubit compiled version of Shor's algorithm to factor the number 15, and successfully find the prime factors 48% of the time. Improvements in the superconducting qubit coherence times and more complex circuits should provide the resources necessary to factor larger composite numbers and run more intricate quantum algorithms.

Performance analysis of an integrated CHP system with thermal and Electric Energy Storage for residential application

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The aim of this paper is the evaluation of the profitability of micro-CHP systems for residential application. An integrated CHP system composed of a prime mover, an Electric Energy Storage system, a thermal storage system and an auxiliary boiler has been considered. The study has been carried out taking into account a particular electrochemical storage system which requires also thermal energy, during its operation, for a better exploitation of the residual heat discharged by the prime mover. The prime mover could be a conventional Internal Combustion Engine or also an innovative system, such as fuel cell or organic Rankine cycle. An investigation of this integrated CHP system has been carried out, by means of an in-house developed calculation code, performing a thermo-economic analysis. This paper provides useful results, in order to define the optimum sizing of components of the integrated CHP system under investigation; the developed code allows also to evaluate the profitability and the primary energy saving with respect to the separate production of electricity and heat.

On prime-generating linear polynomials and x^2+1

E-Print Network (OSTI)

In this paper we use Dirichlet's theorem in order to elementally prove two theorems. The first says that since a polynomial ax+b generates one prime, it also generates infinites. The second theorem (which is proved in a very simillar way to the first) says that x^2+1 generates infinitely many primes.

Mechanical code comparator

DOE Patents (OSTI)

A new class of mechanical code comparators is described which have broad potential for application in safety, surety, and security applications. These devices can be implemented as micro-scale electromechanical systems that isolate a secure or otherwise controlled device until an access code is entered. This access code is converted into a series of mechanical inputs to the mechanical code comparator, which compares the access code to a pre-input combination, entered previously into the mechanical code comparator by an operator at the system security control point. These devices provide extremely high levels of robust security. Being totally mechanical in operation, an access control system properly based on such devices cannot be circumvented by software attack alone.

Tokamak Systems Code

SciTech Connect

The FEDC Tokamak Systems Code calculates tokamak performance, cost, and configuration as a function of plasma engineering parameters. This version of the code models experimental tokamaks. It does not currently consider tokamak configurations that generate electrical power or incorporate breeding blankets. The code has a modular (or subroutine) structure to allow independent modeling for each major tokamak component or system. A primary benefit of modularization is that a component module may be updated without disturbing the remainder of the systems code as long as the imput to or output from the module remains unchanged.

Residential Building Code Compliance

NLE Websites -- All DOE Office Websites (Extended Search)

6 6 Residential Building Code Compliance: Recent Findings and Implications Energy use in residential buildings in the U.S. is significant-about 20% of primary energy use. While several approaches reduce energy use such as appliance standards and utility programs, enforcing state building energy codes is one of the most promising. However, one of the challenges is to understand the rate of compliance within the building community. Utility companies typically use these codes as the baseline for providing incentives to builders participating in utility-sponsored residential new construction (RNC) programs. However, because builders may construct homes that fail to meet energy codes, energy use in the actual baseline is higher than would be expected if all buildings complied with the code. Also,

Invoking the wrappers will automatically link codes with MPI libraries and other Cray system software. All MPI and Cray system include directories are also transparently imported. In addition the wrappers append the compiler's target processor arguments for the hopper compute node processors. NOTE: The intention is that programs are compiled on the login nodes and executed on the compute nodes. Because the compute nodes and login nodes have different operating systems, binaries created for compute nodes may not run on the login node. The wrappers mentioned above guarantee that

Nested Quantum Error Correction Codes

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The theory of quantum error correction was established more than a decade ago as the primary tool for fighting decoherence in quantum information processing. Although great progress has already been made in this field, limited methods are available in constructing new quantum error correction codes from old codes. Here we exhibit a simple and general method to construct new quantum error correction codes by nesting certain quantum codes together. The problem of finding long quantum error correction codes is reduced to that of searching several short length quantum codes with certain properties. Our method works for all length and all distance codes, and is quite efficient to construct optimal or near optimal codes. Two main known methods in constructing new codes from old codes in quantum error-correction theory, the concatenating and pasting, can be understood in the framework of nested quantum error correction codes.

Investigation of the electromagnetic structure of. eta. and. eta. prime mesons by two-photon interactions

SciTech Connect

The TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} storage ring PEP was used to study the reactions {gamma}{gamma}{sup *}{r arrow}{eta} and {gamma}{gamma}{sup *}{r arrow}{eta}{prime}. The {eta}{gamma}{sup *}{gamma} and {eta}{prime}{gamma}{sup *}{gamma} transition form factors were measured as functions of {ital Q}{sup 2}, the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the range 0.1{lt}{ital Q}{sup 2}{lt}7 GeV{sup 2}. These determinations of the electromagnetic structure of the {eta} and {eta}{prime} mesons are consistent with both vector-meson dominance and QCD. They also provide new measurements of the pseudoscalar mixing angle and decay constants.

Nuclear structure of {sup 10}B studied with (e,e{prime}), ({pi},{pi}{prime}) and ({gamma},{pi}) reactions

SciTech Connect

The authors studied nuclear structure of {sup 10}B using (e,e{prime}),({pi},{pi}{prime}) and ({gamma},{pi}) reactions under the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA). For this purpose the off-shell dependence of the amplitude was taken into account in the momentum space DWIA. They used the off-shell elementary amplitude of ({pi},{pi}) and ({gamma},{pi}) by the model of Nozawa, Blankleider and Lee. The first order core polarization effects were incorporated with the p-shell wave functions of Cohen and Kurath and Hauge and Maripuu. It was shown that the core-polarization effects greatly improve the agreement with the experimental data and that the simultaneous study of these reactions is useful to probe the spin structure of p-shell nuclei.

Invisible $Z\\prime$ as a probe of extra dimensions at the CERN LHC

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A class of extra dimensional models with a warped metric predict tunneling of a massive particle localized on our brane and escaping into additional dimensions. The experimental signature of this effect is the disappearance of the particle from our world, i.e. the particle $\\to invisible$ decay. We point out that measurements of $Z\\prime \\to invisible$ decay width of a new heavy gauge boson $Z\\prime$ at the CERN LHC can be effectively used to probe the existence of large extra dimensions. This result enhances motivations for a more sensitive search and study for this decay mode and suggests additional direction for testing extra dimensions in collider experiments.

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The interacting polytropic gas dark energy model is investigated from the viewpoint of statefinder diagnostic tool and $w-w^{\\prime}$ analysis. The dependency of the statefinder parameters on the parameter of the model as well as the interaction parameter between dark matter and dark energy is calculated. We show that different values of the parameters of model and different values of interaction parameter result different evolutionary trajectories in $s-r$ and $w-w^{\\prime}$ planes. The polytropic gas model of dark energy mimics the standard $\\Lambda$CDM model at the early time.

Compliance with Energy Codes | Building Energy Codes Program

NLE Websites -- All DOE Office Websites (Extended Search)

Compliance with Energy Codes Compliance with Energy Codes Energy code compliance must be achieved to realize the considerable benefits inherent in energy codes. BECP supports successful compliance by making no-cost compliance tools, REScheck(tm) and COMcheck(tm), and other resources widely available to everyone. BECP has also developed several resources to help states uniformly assess the rate of compliance with their energy codes for residential and commercial buildings. It is important to note that regardless of the level of enforcement, as a law the building owner/developer is ultimately responsible to comply with the energy code. Compliance will be increased if the adopting agency prepares the building construction community to comply with the energy code and provides resources to code officials to enforce it.

Method for high-volume sequencing of nucleic acids: random and directed priming with libraries of oligonucleotides

DOE Patents (OSTI)

Random and directed priming methods for determining nucleotide sequences by enzymatic sequencing techniques, using libraries of primers of lengths 8, 9 or 10 bases, are disclosed. These methods permit direct sequencing of nucleic acids as large as 45,000 base pairs or larger without the necessity for subcloning. Individual primers are used repeatedly to prime sequence reactions in many different nucleic acid molecules. Libraries containing as few as 10,000 octamers, 14,200 nonamers, or 44,000 decamers would have the capacity to determine the sequence of almost any cosmid DNA. Random priming with a fixed set of primers from a smaller library can also be used to initiate the sequencing of individual nucleic acid molecules, with the sequence being completed by directed priming with primers from the library. In contrast to random cloning techniques, a combined random and directed priming strategy is far more efficient.

Inter-rater reliability and convergent validity of F1000Prime peer review

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Peer review is the backbone of modern science. F1000Prime is a post-publication peer review system of the biomedical literature (papers from medical and biological journals). This study is concerned with the inter-rater reliability and convergent validity of the peer recommendations formulated in the F1000Prime peer review system. The study is based on around 100,000 papers with recommendations from Faculty members. Even if intersubjectivity plays a fundamental role in science, the analyses of the reliability of the F1000Prime peer review system show a rather low level of agreement between Faculty members. This result is in agreement with most other studies which have been published on the journal peer review system. Logistic regression models are used to investigate the convergent validity of the F1000Prime peer review system. As the results show, the proportion of highly cited papers among those selected by the Faculty members is significantly higher than expected. In addition, better recommendation scores ...

Chapter 28 - Perceptual Audio Coding

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Audio Coding has proliferated as a mainstream enabling digital technology for all types of applications that provide audio and multimedia to consumers using transmission or storage channels with limited capacity. Since its infancies in the eighties and early nineties, the technology behind low bitrate audio coding has developed rapidly until today. Nonetheless, the technology generations seen to date follow several common themes, including the use of time/frequency-domain processing, redundancy reduction (entropy coding), and irrelevancy removal through the pronounced exploitation of perceptual effects. The latter aspect is of paramount importance to the understanding and the performance of the coding systems and has gained more and more in importance over time. Starting from basic principles, this article provides an overview of methods for low bitrate perceptual audio coding and its evolution over time along with some related coding standards (e.g., mp3) and typical applications.

Disordering and dissolution of [gamma][prime] precipitates under ion irradiation

SciTech Connect

The stability of the [gamma][prime] phase of the nickel-base alloy Nimonic PE16 under irradiation with Ni[sup +] ions of 300-keV energy is studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The disordering of the [gamma][prime] phase could be followed as a function of fluence. The main finding is the observation of weak but measurable superlattice reflections between 0.1 and 1 dpa after irradiation at room temperature. The superlattice reflections disappear in two steps. Their intensities decrease considerably within a fluence of 0.1 dpa, while weak intensities are observed up to a fluence of 1 dpa. These reflections disappear completely after a fluence of 2 dpa. The results are discussed within a model which considers both disordering and dissolution of precipitates under cascade producing irradiation.

SDC hadronic mass resolutions in Z and Z{prime} decays

SciTech Connect

In order to investigate the performance as a function of calorimeter characteristics, events were simulated in the SDC detector for Z and Z{prime} (m{sub Z}{prime} = 1TeV) production at two different P{sub T} values (50GeV/c and 500GeV/C). This initial study concentrated on the effects of clustering (including jet fragmentation fluctuations and contributions from underlying events), segmentation and calorimeter energy resolution. These studies were intended to explore the capabilities of the SDC detector for reconstruction of hadronic decays of massive particles (Z mass or greater). We find that detector-independent contributions dominate the mass resolution for the range of parameters being considered by SDC.

A reclamation approach for mined prime farmland by adding organic wastes and lime to the subsoil

SciTech Connect

Surface mined prime farmland may be reclaimed by adding organic wastes and lime to subsoil thus improving conditions in root zone. In this study, sewage sludge, poultry manure, horse bedding, and lime were applied to subsoil (15-30 cm) during reclamation. Soil properties and plant growth were measured over two years. All organic amendments tended to lower the subsoil bulk density and increase organic matter and total nitrogen. Liming raised exchangeable calcium, slightly increased pH, but decreased exchangeable magnesium and potassium. Corn ear-leaf and forage tissue nitrogen, yields, and nitrogen removal increased in treatments amended with sewage sludge and poultry manure, but not horse bedding. Subsoil application of sewage sludge or poultry manure seems like a promising method in the reclamation of surface mined prime farmland based on the improvements observed in the root zone environment.

Experience is described with use of a fast-running Stirling engine optimization code developed at Argonne intended for public release. Stirling engine modeling is provided by the SEAM1 thermodynamic code. An interface was written to combine SEAM1 with a general optimization code and assess maximum component stress levels. Thus full engine thermodynamic and structural simulation is done during the optimization process. Several examples of the use of this code to optimize the GPU-3 engine are described. In one case efficiency was improved by over 25%.

LFSC - Linac Feedback Simulation Code

SciTech Connect

The computer program LFSC (Code>) is a numerical tool for simulation beam based feedback in high performance linacs. The code LFSC is based on the earlier version developed by a collective of authors at SLAC (L.Hendrickson, R. McEwen, T. Himel, H. Shoaee, S. Shah, P. Emma, P. Schultz) during 1990-2005. That code was successively used in simulation of SLC, TESLA, CLIC and NLC projects. It can simulate as pulse-to-pulse feedback on timescale corresponding to 5-100 Hz, as slower feedbacks, operating in the 0.1-1 Hz range in the Main Linac and Beam Delivery System. The code LFSC is running under Matlab for MS Windows operating system. It contains about 30,000 lines of source code in more than 260 subroutines. The code uses the LIAR ('Linear Accelerator Research code') for particle tracking under ground motion and technical noise perturbations. It uses the Guinea Pig code to simulate the luminosity performance. A set of input files includes the lattice description (XSIF format), and plane text files with numerical parameters, wake fields, ground motion data etc. The Matlab environment provides a flexible system for graphical output.

Tributyltin potentiates 3,3{prime},4,4{prime},5-pentachlorobiphenyl-induced cytochrome P-4501A-related activity

SciTech Connect

Induction of cytochrome P-4501A protein and induction of related enzyme activity are hallmark physiological responses following exposure to planar halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (HAHs) such as 3,3{prime},4,4{prime},5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126; PeCB). Environments contaminated by HAHs are often contaminated by mixtures of anthropogenic contaminants, including organometallic compounds. Both HAHs and organometallics easily bioconcentrate in aquatic food chains that may be linked to humans through seafood consumption. Tributyltin (TBT), a marine biocide, has been detected in many aquatic environments. Exposure to TBT, as well as several PCBs, has been associated with immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and endocrine disruption. Recently TBT has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P-4501A activity in vitro. Female mice were exposed to 0.07, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/kg PeCB, TBT or both. P-4501A levels and BaP-OHase activity were significantly elevated in mice exposed to PeCB alone. This effect was enhanced by coexposure to low levels of TBT; PeCB-induced P-4501A-related activity was potentiated at the low range of each. The highest dose of TBT, however, inhibited these activities when given in combination with PeCB. Thymic atrophy was evident only in mice exposed daily to 0.1 and 1.0 mg/kg PeCB alone, or to a combination of the lowest and highest dose of PeCB and TBT, respectively. Because environmental levels of. TBT are not expected to be as high as the highest level used in our toxicological studies, we conclude that environmental exposure to TBT may potentiate, rather than inhibit, the activity of environmental levels of HAHs that are associated with P-4501A induction. 31 refs., 8 figs.
