Video Gallery of the National Ignition Facility

DOE Data Explorer (OSTI)

NIF houses the world’s largest and highest-energy laser, which has the goal of achieving nuclear fusion and energy gain in the laboratory for the first time - in essence, creating a miniature star on Earth. NIF, a program of the DOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) focuses the intense energy of 192 giant laser beams on a BB-sized target filled with hydrogen fuel, fusing the hydrogen atoms' nuclei and releasing many times more energy than it took to initiate the fusion reaction. NIF is capable of creating temperatures and pressures similar to those that exist only in the cores of stars and giant planets and inside nuclear weapons. Achieving nuclear fusion in the laboratory is at the heart of three complementary missions: 1) Helping ensure the nation’s security without nuclear weapons testing; 2) Blazing the path to a safe, virtually unlimited, carbon-free energy future; and 3) Achieving breakthroughs in a wide variety of scientific disciplines, including astrophysics, materials science, the use of lasers in medicine, radioactive and hazardous waste treatment, particle physics and X-ray and neutron science [taken, with editing, from https://lasers.llnl.gov/about/]. NIF’s Video Gallery presents several narrated clips from the construction phase and short videos about the science behind NIF. These include, “The Power of Light,” “From the Sun to a Sun,” and “A Legacy of Lasers.” One of the videos allows the user to watch a synthetic seed crystal grow into an 800 pound potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystal for use in the facility. The most unique clip is “Stellar Gest,” the narration of a poem by Charan Sue Wollard, Poet Laureate for the city of Livermore, home of Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and NIF.

The bike enabled students to pedal for power and experience the difference in physical effort necessary to power incandescent, compact fluorescent, and LED lighting. This lesson highlighted Energy Principle 4, which states that various sources of energy can be used to power human activities, and often this energy must be transferred from source to destination. Whisper gallery mirrors reflectivities from 100 [angstrom] to 500 [angstrom

SciTech Connect

We have examined optical constants and predicted reflectivities of candidate surface coatings for whisper gallery mirrors in the extreme ultraviolet (100 [Angstrom] to 500 [Angstrom]). Previous work of Vinogradov and coworkers have identified the spectral regime near 100-150 [Angstrom] as particularly promising due to the high whisper gallery mirror reflectivities of the noble metals in the vicinity of their Cooper minima in this regime. We confirm this basic result using newer optical data, and we have sought surface materials which would extend the range over which the whisper gallery mirrors may be used: between 100 to 500 [Angstrom]. We find that substantial whisper gallery mirror reflectivities (near or greater than 50%) are predicted for a variety of elements, and that the TE peak reflection is larger than TM peak reflection by on the order of 10%. However, most of the elements which do reflect well have surfaces that are vulnerable to oxygen contamination, which seriously degrades mirror performance. A cryogenic mirror design using a dynamic solid rare gas surface which has the potential to defeat such surface contaminations is described: it has peak reflectivity of more than 50% centered near 280 [Angstrom]. 8 figs, 18 refs.

cMsg - A publish/subscribe interprocess communication package and framework

SciTech Connect

Asynchronous publish/subscribe messaging is a simple but powerful interprocess communication technique that is widely used in industry. It is less widely used in the academic/research world, partly because commercial implementations are fairly expensive. cMsg is both a full-featured publish/subscribe package and a framework within which one can deploy multiply underlying communication packages. The underlying packages need not implement asynchronous publish/subscribe messaging. This framework feature allows one to unify all communications under a single, flexible API, and allows for integration of legacy communication packages. Performance is excellent, making cMsg suitable for use in controls applications as well as in high-speed data transfer applications. cMsg will be used extensively by the next generation of experiments at JLab.

A Hybrid Multicast-Unicast Infrastructure for Efficient Publish-Subscribe in Enterprise Networks

E-Print Network (OSTI)

One of the main challenges in building a large scale publish-subscribe infrastructure in an enterprise network, is to provide the subscribers with the required information, while minimizing the consumed host and network resources. Typically, previous approaches utilize either IP multicast or point-to-point unicast for efficient dissemination of the information. In this work, we propose a novel hybrid framework, which is a combination of both multicast and unicast data dissemination. Our hybrid framework allows us to take the advantages of both multicast and unicast, while avoiding their drawbacks. We investigate several algorithms for computing the best mapping of publishers' transmissions into multicast and unicast transport. Using extensive simulations, we show that our hybrid framework reduces consumed host and network resources, outperforming traditional solutions. To insure the subscribers interests closely resemble those of real-world settings, our simulations are based on stock market data and on recor...

Microwave whispering gallery resonator for efficient optical up-conversion

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Conversion of microwave radiation into the optical range has been predicted to reach unity quantum efficiency in whispering gallery resonators made from an optically nonlinear crystal and supporting microwave and optical modes simultaneously. In this work we theoretically explore and experimentally demonstrate a resonator geometry that can provide the required phase matching for such a conversion at any desired frequency in the sub-THz range. We show that such a ring-shaped resonator not only allows for the phase matching, but also maximizes the overlap of the interacting fields. As a result, unity-efficient conversion is expected in a resonator with feasible parameters.

Video Gallery from the Census of Marine Life

DOE Data Explorer (OSTI)

Two video galleries provide different views of the Census effort. One contains videos of activities from the various individual projects and informational, overview videos. The other presents interviews with researchers, speeches and presentations, and clips from artistic films. The Census of Marine Life is a global network of researchers in more than 80 nations engaged in a 10-year scientific initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of life in the oceans. The Census has evolved a strategy of field projects to touch the major habitats and groups of species in the global ocean. Some address habitats, such as seamounts or the Arctic Ocean. Others look globally at animals that either traverse the seas or appear globally distributed: the top predators such as tuna and the plankton and the microbes. The projects employ a mix of technologies. These include acoustics or sound, optics or cameras, tags placed on individual animals that store or report data, and genetics, as well as some actual capture of animals. Image Gallery from the Census of Marine Life

DOE Data Explorer (OSTI)

The Census has evolved a strategy of 14 field projects to touch the major habitats and groups of species in the global ocean. Eleven field projects address habitats, such as seamounts or the Arctic Ocean. Three field projects look globally at animals that either traverse the seas or appear globally distributed: the top predators such as tuna and the plankton and the microbes. The projects employ a mix of technologies. These include acoustics or sound, optics or cameras, tags placed on individual animals that store or report data, and genetics, as well as some actual capture of animals. The Census of Marine Life provides a much clearer picture of what lives below the surface around the globe. Several reasons make such a report timely, indeed urgent. Better information is needed to fashion the management that will sustain fisheries, conserve diversity, reverse losses of habitat, reduce impacts of pollution, and respond to global climate change. Hence, there are biological, economic, philosophical and political reasons to push for greater exploration and understanding of the ocean and its inhabitants. Indeed, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity requires signatories to collect information on living resources, but, as yet, no nation has a complete baseline of such information. The Census of Marine Life's global network of researchers will help to fill this knowledge gap, providing critical information to help guide decisions on how to manage global marine resources for the future. [This information was copied from http://www.coml.org/about, then edited and shortened.] The Image Gallery from the Census provides close-up photography of species, many never before seen. In addition, the maps and visualizations produced at Duke University's Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab provide striking visual overviews of the Census projects and activities as a whole.

cMsg - A general purpose, publish-subscribe, interprocess communication implementation and framework

SciTech Connect

cMsg is software used to send and receive messages in the Jefferson Lab online and runcontrol systems. It was created to replace the several IPC software packages in use with a single API. cMsg is asynchronous in nature, running a callback for each message received. However, it also includes synchronous routines for convenience. On the framework level, cMsg is a thin API layer in Java, C, or C++ that can be used to wrap most message-based interprocess communication protocols. The top layer of cMsg uses this same API and multiplexes user calls to one of many such wrapped protocols (or domains) based on a URL-like string which we call a Uniform Domain Locator or UDL. One such domain is a complete implementation of a publish-subscribe messaging system using network communications and written in Java (user APIs in C and C++ too). This domain is built in a way which allows it to be used as a proxy server to other domains (protocols). Performance is excellent allowing the system not only to be used for messaging but also as a data distribution system.

Coupling of a single diamond nanocrystal to a whispering-gallery microcavity: Photon transport benefitting from Rayleigh scattering

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

We study the Rayleigh scattering induced by a diamond nanocrystal in a whispering-gallery-microcavity-waveguide coupling system and find that it plays a significant role in the photon transportation. On the one hand, this study provides insight into future solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics aimed at understanding strong-coupling physics. On the other hand, benefitting from this Rayleigh scattering, effects such as dipole-induced transparency and strong photon antibunching can occur simultaneously. As a potential application, this system can function as a high-efficiency photon turnstile. In contrast to B. Dayan et al. [Science 319, 1062 (2008)], the photon turnstiles proposed here are almost immune to the nanocrystal's azimuthal position.

Mobile systems capability plan

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

This plan was prepared to initiate contracting for and deployment of these mobile system services. 102,000 cubic meters of retrievable, contact-handled TRU waste are stored at many sites around the country. Also, an estimated 38,000 cubic meters of TRU waste will be generated in the course of waste inventory workoff and continuing DOE operations. All the defense TRU waste is destined for disposal in WIPP near Carlsbad NM. To ship TRU waste there, sites must first certify that the waste meets WIPP waste acceptance criteria. The waste must be characterized, and if not acceptable, subjected to additional processing, including repackaging. Most sites plan to use existing fixed facilities or open new ones between FY1997-2006 to perform these functions; small-quantity sites lack this capability. An alternative to fixed facilities is the use of mobile systems mounted in trailers or skids, and transported to sites. Mobile systems will be used for all characterization and certification at small sites; large sites can also use them. The Carlsbad Area Office plans to pursue a strategy of privatization of mobile system services, since this offers a number of advantages. To indicate the possible magnitude of the costs of deploying mobile systems, preliminary estimates of equipment, maintenance, and operating costs over a 10-year period were prepared and options for purchase, lease, and privatization through fixed-price contracts considered.

Mobile Biomass Pelletizing System

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

This grant project examines multiple aspects of the pelletizing process to determine the feasibility of pelletizing biomass using a mobile form factor system. These aspects are: the automatic adjustment of the die height in a rotary-style pellet mill, the construction of the die head to allow the use of ceramic materials for extreme wear, integrating a heat exchanger network into the entire process from drying to cooling, the use of superheated steam for adjusting the moisture content to optimum, the economics of using diesel power to operate the system; a break-even analysis of estimated fixed operating costs vs. tons per hour capacity. Initial development work has created a viable mechanical model. The overall analysis of this model suggests that pelletizing can be economically done using a mobile platform.

Mobilization across social networks is becoming increasingly influential, but little is known about what traits of individuals and their relationships affect their speed of mobilization between them. We ran a global social mobilization contest and recorded personal traits of the participants and those they mobilized. We examined how those traits influenced the speed of mobilization. Individuals mobilized faster when they heard about the contest directly from the contest organization, and decreased in speed when hearing from less personal source types (e.g. family vs. media). Mobilization was faster when the mobilizer and

Mobile Window Thermal Test

NLE Websites -- All DOE Office Websites (Extended Search)

Mobile Window Thermal Test (MoWiTT) Facility Mobile Window Thermal Test (MoWiTT) Facility winter.jpg (469135 bytes) The window has come a long way since the days when it was a single pane of glass in a wood frame. Low-emissivity windows were designed to help buildings retain some of the energy that would have leaked out of less efficient windows. Designing efficient window-and-frame systems is one strategy for reducing the energy use of buildings. But the net energy flowing through a window is a combination of temperature- driven thermal flows and transmission of incident solar energy, both of which vary with time. U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), the window properties that control these flows, depend partly on ambient conditions. Window energy flows can affect how much energy a building uses, depending on when the window flows are available to help meet other energy demands within the building, and when they are adverse, adding to building energy use. This leads to a second strategy for reducing building energy use: using the beneficial solar gain available through a window, either for winter heating or for daylighting, while minimizing adverse flows.

Because of the chemical similarity of Po to S (both occupy the same column in the periodic table), studies were begun to determine whether bacteria, particularly those species active in sulfur cycling, could account for the selective solubilization and mobilization of Po. Possible sources of Po are the U-rich phosphate rock and phosphogypsum (gypsum), a byproduct in the manufacture of phosphoric acid. This paper reports on a series of experiments involving the interaction of bacteria with this waste gypsum that resulted in the solubilization of Po. Bacteria were isolated from gypsum that were capable of mediating Po release in column experiments of Po. Bacteria were isolated from gypsum that were capable of mediating Po release in column experiments when fed a growth medium. Sulfate-reducing bacteria were particularly effective at mediating Po release provided the sulfide levels did not rise above 10 {mu}M, in which case Po was apparently coprecipitated as a metal sulfide. Conversely, the ability of sulfate-reducing bacteria to effectively remove dissolved Po when sulfide levels are high suggests that these bacteria may be used as an effective bioremediation tool at reducing groundwater Po levels. 22 refs., 10 figs.

Mobile Energy Laboratory Procedures

SciTech Connect

Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) has been tasked to plan and implement a framework for measuring and analyzing the efficiency of on-site energy conversion, distribution, and end-use application on federal facilities as part of its overall technical support to the US Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). The Mobile Energy Laboratory (MEL) Procedures establish guidelines for specific activities performed by PNL staff. PNL provided sophisticated energy monitoring, auditing, and analysis equipment for on-site evaluation of energy use efficiency. Specially trained engineers and technicians were provided to conduct tests in a safe and efficient manner with the assistance of host facility staff and contractors. Reports were produced to describe test procedures, results, and suggested courses of action. These reports may be used to justify changes in operating procedures, maintenance efforts, system designs, or energy-using equipment. The MEL capabilities can subsequently be used to assess the results of energy conservation projects. These procedures recognize the need for centralized NM administration, test procedure development, operator training, and technical oversight. This need is evidenced by increasing requests fbr MEL use and the economies available by having trained, full-time MEL operators and near continuous MEL operation. DOE will assign new equipment and upgrade existing equipment as new capabilities are developed. The equipment and trained technicians will be made available to federal agencies that provide funding for the direct costs associated with MEL use.

Sketch Recognition on Mobile Devices

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Sketch recognition allows computers to understand and model hand drawn sketches and diagrams. Traditionally sketch recognition systems required a pen based PC interface, but powerful mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones can provide a new platform for sketch recognition systems. We describe a new sketch recognition library, Strontium (SrL) that combines several existing sketch recognition libraries modified to run on both personal computers and on the Android platform. We analyzed the recognition speed and accuracy implications of performing low-level shape recognition on smartphones with touch screens. We found that there is a large gap in recognition speed on mobile devices between recognizing simple shapes and more complex ones, suggesting that mobile sketch interface designers limit the complexity of their sketch domains. We also found that a low sampling rate on mobile devices can affect recognition accuracy of complex and curved shapes. Despite this, we found no evidence to suggest that using a finger as an input implement leads to a decrease in simple shape recognition accuracy. These results show that the same geometric shape recognizers developed for pen applications can be used in mobile applications, provided that developers keep shape domains simple and ensure that input sampling rate is kept as high as possible.

Combinatorial mobile IP: a new efficient mobility management using minimized paging and local registration

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Abstract. Combinatorial Mobile IP, a new mobility management scheme for Mobile IP, is proposed and analyzed. We present how to adopt mobility management schemes on cellular networks and adapt them in Mobile IP without disrupting the nature of the Internet. We apply widely used mobility management schemes such as hierarchical architecture and paging in cellular networks to Mobile IP. We restrict paging to the area that has to be paged using local registrations. In this way, we show that the total signaling costs of Combinatorial Mobile IP are reduced compared to other micro-mobility protocols such as Mobile IP Regional Registration and P-MIP. Random walk on a connected graph is used to analyze the performance of Combinatorial Mobile IP.

The Economic Mobility in Money Transfer Models

E-Print Network (OSTI)

In this paper, we investigate the economic mobility in some money transfer models which have been applied into the research on monetary distribution. We demonstrate the mobility by recording the agents' ranks time series and observing the volatility. We also compare the mobility quantitatively by employing an index, "the per capita aggregate change in log-income", raised by economists. Like the shape of distribution, the character of mobility is also decided by the trading rule in these transfer models. It is worth noting that even though different models have the same type of distribution, their mobility characters may be quite different.

in print: Mobile Communities – New Business Opportunities for Mobile Network Operators

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This paper presents the results of an analysis of potential revuenue streams and business models for mobile communities from a mobile network operator’s perspective. It gives a contribution to the answer of the actual business challenges in the mobile carrier sector where operators are continously searching for new innovative services and business models to increase their revenues and financial performance in the age of 3 rd generation mobile technology. Mobile communities are considered to be the next logical evolutional step of the existing virtual communities on the internet. The extension of web-based virtual communities with new community-orientated mobile services is expected to be enormously attractive – from the community user’s point of view as well as from the mobile operators ’ point of view: Mobile operators are playing the central part in terms of realisation and provision of these new services, since they own and build up the necessary technical infrastructure of mobile communication networks. Furthermore, mobile operators are considered to generate direct revenue streams out of mobile community-services, since they bill the connection fees of mobile services. Mobile communities and mobile community services are a very innovative topic. Despite all these great expectations, no empirical experiences have been made yet regarding this topic, since mobile communities are

Mobility control of caustic flood

SciTech Connect

Displacement tests to date of oil field core with alkaline solutions at reservoir temperature show low tertiary oil recovery. Inadequate mobility control is singled out as the reason for such poor recovery. To test the validity of this reasoning, a laboratory study was undertaken in which a high heat resistant polymer was used as the mobility control agent in a hot alkaline solution recovery technique. A combination of varying concentration and volumes of the polymer solution was injected into the sandpack which was then flooded with hot sodium hydroxide solution. The range of polymer concentration was between 0.0% and 3.0%, while the volume varied between 0.0 pore volume and 1.7 pore volume. It was observed that polymer injection actually did improve recovery substantially and that there is an optimum concentration and slug size of polymer for a particular reservoir. Higher concentrations of pore volumes injected did not improve recovery significantly.

Distributed services for mobile ad hoc networks

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A mobile ad hoc network consists of certain nodes that communicate only through wireless medium and can move arbitrarily. The key feature of a mobile ad hoc network is the mobility of the nodes. Because of the mobility, communication links form and disappear as nodes come into and go out of each other's communica- tion range. Mobile ad hoc networks are particularly useful in situations like disaster recovery and search, military operations, etc. Research on mobile ad hoc networks has drawn a huge amount of attention recently. The main challenges for mobile ad hoc networks are the sparse resources and frequent mobility. Most of the research work has been focused on the MAC and routing layer. In this work, we focus on distributed services for mobile ad hoc networks. These services will provide some fundamental functions in developing various applications for mobile ad hoc networks. In particular, we focus on the clock synchronization, connected dominating set, and k-mutual exclusion problems in mobile ad hoc networks.

Planet-scale Human Mobility Measurement

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Research into, and design and construction of mobile systems and algorithms requires access to large-scale mobility data. Unfortunately, the wireless and mobile research community lacks such data. For instance, the largest available human contact traces contain only 100 nodes with very sparse connectivity, limited by experimental logistics. In this paper we pose a challenge to the community: how can we collect mobility data from billions of human participants? We re-assert the importance of large-scale datasets in communication network design, and claim that this could impact fundamental studies in other academic disciplines. In effect, we argue that planet-scale mobility measurements can help to save the world. For example, through understanding large-scale human mobility, we can track and model and contain the spread of epidemics of various kinds.

Ion mobility analysis of lipoproteins

DOE Patents (OSTI)

A medical diagnostic method and instrumentation system for analyzing noncovalently bonded agglomerated biological particles is described. The method and system comprises: a method of preparation for the biological particles; an electrospray generator; an alpha particle radiation source; a differential mobility analyzer; a particle counter; and data acquisition and analysis means. The medical device is useful for the assessment of human diseases, such as cardiac disease risk and hyperlipidemia, by rapid quantitative analysis of lipoprotein fraction densities. Initially, purification procedures are described to reduce an initial blood sample to an analytical input to the instrument. The measured sizes from the analytical sample are correlated with densities, resulting in a spectrum of lipoprotein densities. The lipoprotein density distribution can then be used to characterize cardiac and other lipid-related health risks.

Dynamic Analysis of Mobile Device Applications

SciTech Connect

The On-Device Dynamic Analysis of Mobile Applications (ODAMA) project was started in an effort to protect mobile devices used in Industrial Control Systems (ICS) from cyber attack. Because mobile devices hide as much of the “computer” as possible, the user’s ability to assess the software running on their system is limited. The research team chose Google’s Android platform for this initial research because it is open source and it would give us freedom in our approach, including the ability to modify the mobile device’s operating system itself. The research team concluded that a Privileged Application was the right approach, and the result was ODAMA. This project is an important piece of the work to secure the expanding use of mobile devices with our nation’s critical infrastructure.
