Magnetic Moments of 69-min Ag104 and 27-min Ag104m

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The hyperfine structure separations of 69-min Ag104 and of 27-min Ag104m have been measured using the atomic beam magnetic resonance method. The results are: ??I=5(69-minAg104)=33 500-1000+2000 Mc/sec, ??I=2(27-minAg104m)=35 0002000 Mc/sec. The sign of the nuclear magnetic dipole moment has been found to be positive for both states, and by use of the Fermi-Segr formula one obtains ?I(I=5)=+4.0-0.1+0.2 nm, ?I(I=2)=+3.70.2 nm. Nuclear configurations which give these moments are discussed and we comment on the difference between Ag104 which shows a 2+, 5+ angular momentum recoupling doublet and Ag106 and Ag110 which show a 1+, 6+ doublet.

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Sources of Th235 and Pa235 were prepared by medium energy neutron and proton irradiations of uranium followed by radiochemical separations. Gamma-ray spectroscopy showed 13 new ? rays in the decay of Th235. Its half-life is 7.30.1 min, and that of Pa235 is 24.60.2 min. A partial decay scheme is proposed for Th235, and a large anomalous retardation is reported in one branch of the Pa235 ?- decay.

Decay of 37.5-min Th236 and 9.1-min Pa236

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The decays of Th236 and its Pa236 daughter were studied by ?-ray spectroscopy. By means of radiochemical methods and a continuous separation technique pure sources of parent and daughter were prepared so that each was free (or almost free) of the other. For Th236, 14 of the 17 observed ? rays are new; for Pa236 16 new ? rays were found. Absolute intensities of all the ? rays were determined with the aid of 4? beta measurements on Pa236. A new decay scheme is proposed for Th236 and a considerably expanded one is given for Pa236. The half-lives determined are 37.50.2 min for Th236 and 9.10.1 min for Pa236.

Min CSP on Four Elements: Moving Beyond Submodularity

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We report new results on the complexity of the valued constraint satisfaction problem (VCSP). Under the unique games conjecture, the approximability of finite-valued VCSP is fairly well-understood. However, there is yet no characterisation of VCSPs that can be solved exactly in polynomial time. This is unsatisfactory, since such results are interesting from a combinatorial optimisation perspective; there are deep connections with, for instance, submodular and bisubmodular minimisation. We consider the Min and Max CSP problems (i.e. where the cost functions only attain values in {0,1}) over four-element domains and identify all tractable fragments. Similar classifications were previously known for two- and three-element domains. In the process, we introduce a new class of tractable VCSPs based on a generalisation of submodularity. We also extend and modify a graph-based technique by Zivny and Kolmogorov (originally introduced by Takhanov) for efficiently obtaining hardness results in our setting. This allow us...

Stuttering Min oscillations within E. coli bacteria: a stochastic polymerization model

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We have developed a 3D off-lattice stochastic polymerization model to study subcellular oscillation of Min proteins in the bacteria Escherichia coli, and used it to investigate the experimental phenomenon of Min oscillation stuttering. Stuttering was affected by the rate of immediate rebinding of MinE released from depolymerizing filament tips (processivity), protection of depolymerizing filament tips from MinD binding, and fragmentation of MinD filaments due to MinE. Each of processivity, protection, and fragmentation reduces stuttering, speeds oscillations, and reduces MinD filament lengths. Neither processivity or tip-protection were, on their own, sufficient to produce fast stutter-free oscillations. While filament fragmentation could, on its own, lead to fast oscillations with infrequent stuttering; high levels of fragmentation degraded oscillations. The infrequent stuttering observed in standard Min oscillations are consistent with short filaments of MinD, while we expect that mutants that exhibit highe...

A note on the generalized min-sum set cover problem

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In this paper, we consider the generalized min-sum set cover problem, introduced by Azar, Gamzu, and Yin (STOC 2009). Bansal, Gupta, and Krishnaswamy (SODA 2010) give a 485-approximation algorithm for the problem. We are able to alter their algorithm and analysis to obtain a 28-approximation algorithm, improving the performance guarantee by an order of magnitude. We use concepts from ? -point scheduling to obtain our improvements.

ARM Energy Balance Bowen Ratio (EBBR) station: surf. heat flux and related data, 30-min

DOE Data Explorer (OSTI)

The Energy Balance Bowen Ratio (EBBR) system produces 30-min estimates of the vertical fluxes of sensible and latent heat at the local surface. Flux estimates are calculated from observations of net radiation, soil surface heat flux, and the vertical gradients of temperature and relative humidity. Meteorological data collected by the EBBR are used to calculate bulk aerodynamic fluxes, which are used in the Bulk Aerodynamic Technique (BA) EBBR value-added product (VAP) to replace sunrise and sunset spikes in the flux data. A unique aspect of the system is the automatic exchange mechanism (AEM), which helps to reduce errors from instrument offset drift.

Neutron-induced fission of the 26 min U235 isomer

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

We have measured the neutron-induced-fission cross section of the U235 isomer with cold and with thermal neutrons. Because of its short half-life (26 min), preparation of an adequate isomeric target is the major difficulty. A simple and easy-to-operate technique has been developed. The cross-section ratio of isomer to ground state is measured to be 1.610.44 and 2.470.45 for the cold and the thermal neutrons, respectively.

Gamma-Ray Studies on the Decay of 2.41-min Ag108

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

?-ray singles and coincidence measurements following the decay of 2.41-min Ag108 have been performed with Ge(Li) and NaI(Tl) detectors. A total of 13 ? rays have been assigned to Ag108 decay and their energies and intensities have been measured accurately. From the coincidence measurements and energy-sum relationships 12 ? rays have been fitted into six excited states of Pd108 with the following energies in keV and spins: 433.96, 2+; 931.09, 2+; 1052.82, 0+; 1314.22, 0+; 1441.16, 2+; and 1539.97, 1, 2. The first excited 2+ state of Cd108 at 632.98 keV is also populated by the ? decay of Ag108. The spins of the 1052.82- and 1314.22-keV levels were determined uniquely as 0 from the NaI(Tl)-Ge(Li) directional-correlation measurements. These data also yield a spin of 2 for the 1441.16-keV level and E2+?2%M1 multipolarity for the 1007.22-keV transition. A discussion of the Pd108 levels within the vibrational framework is presented.

Cd doping effects in the heavy-fermion compounds Ce2MIn8 (M=Rh and Ir)

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Low-temperature magnetic properties of Cd-doped Ce2MIn8 (M=Rh and Ir) single crystals are investigated. Experiments of temperature-dependent magnetic-susceptibility, heat-capacity, and electrical-resistivity measurements revealed that Cd doping enhances the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature from TN=2.8?K (x=0) to TN=4.8?K (x=0.21) for Ce2RhIn8?xCdx and induces long-range AFM ordering with TN=3.8?K (x=0.21) for Ce2IrIn8?xCdx. Additionally, x-ray and neutron magnetic scattering studies showed that Cd-doped samples present below TN a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector ??=(12,12,0). The resolved magnetic structures for both compounds indicate that the Cd doping tends to rotate the direction of the ordered magnetic moments toward the ab plane. This result suggests that the Cd doping affects the Ce3+ ground-state single-ion anisotropy modifying the crystalline electrical field (CEF) parameters at the Ce3+ site. Indications of CEF evolution induced by Cd doping were also found in the electrical-resistivity measurements. Comparisons between our results and the general effects of Cd doping on the related compounds CeMIn5 (M=Co, Rh, and Ir) confirms the claims that the Cd doping induced electronic tuning is the main effect favoring AFM ordering in these compounds.

A one-dimensional Lattice Boltzmann method for modeling the dynamic pole-to-pole oscillations of Min proteins for determining the position of the midcell division plane

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Determining the middle of the bacteria cell and the proper placement of the septum is essential to the division of the bacterial cell. In E. coli, this process depends on the proteins MinC, MinD, and MinE. Here, the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used to study the dynamics of the oscillations of the min proteins from pole to pole. This determines the midcell division plane at the cellular level. The LBM is applied to the set of the deterministic reaction diffusion equations proposed by Howard et. al. [1] to describe the dynamics of the Min proteins. The LBM results are in good agreement with those of Howard et al, and agree qualitatively with the experimental results. Our good results indicate that the LBM can be an alternative computational tool for simulating problems dealing with complex biological system which are described by the reaction-diffusion equations.

Min-Bias and the Underlying Event at the LHC

E-Print Network (OSTI)

In a very short time the experiments at the LHC have collected a large amount of data that can be used to study minimum bias (MB) collisions and the underlying event (UE) in great detail. The CDF PYTHIA 6.2 Tune DW predictions for the LHC UE data at 900 GeV and 7 TeV are examined in detail. The behavior of the UE at the LHC is roughly what we expected. The LHC PYTHIA 6.4 Tune Z1 does an excellent job describing the LHC UE data. The modeling of MB (i.e. the overall inelastic cross section) is more complicated because one must include a model of diffraction. The ability of PYTHIA Tune DW and Tune Z1 to simultaneously describe both the UE in a hard scattering process and MB collisions are studied. No model describes perfectly all the features of MB collisions at the LHC.

The Decay of Rh104m (4.3 Min) and Rh104 (44 Sec)

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The radiations of neutron-activated rhodium are studied with 180 constant field conversion electron spectrometers and a gamma-ray scintillation spectrometer. Internal conversion electrons are observed to be associated with the 4.3-minute activity. These are interpreted as arising from two isomeric transitions of 51.10.2 and 77.20.2 kev in rhodium. By coincidence studies these two transitions are shown to be in cascade. The character of the radiations, as determined from the KL ratios and lifetime considerations, appears to be M1 and E3, respectively. Additional gamma-rays of energy 55010 kev and ?1.2 Mev (weak) are observed with the scintillation spectrometer. The 550-kev transition is associated with both the 44-second and the 4.3-minute periods and is assumed to follow the beta-decay and hence be in Pd104.

Hydrolysis of DFP and the Nerve Agent (S)-Sarin by DFPase Proceeds Along Two Different Reaction Pathways: Implica-tions for Engineering Bioscavengers

SciTech Connect

Organophosphorus (OP) nerve agents such as (S)-sarin are among the most highly toxic compounds that have been synthesized. Engineering enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of nerve agents ( bioscavengers ) is an emerging prophylactic approach to diminishing their toxic effects. Although its native function is not known, diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase) from Loligo vulgaris catalyzes the hydrolysis of OP compounds. Here, we investigate the mechanisms of diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) and (S)-sarin hydrolysis by DFPase with quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) umbrella sampling simulations. We find that the mechanism for hydrolysis of DFP involves nucleophilic attack by Asp229 on phosphorus to form a pentavalent intermediate. P F bond dissociation then yields a phosphoacyl enzyme intermediate in the rate-limiting step. The simulations suggest that a water molecule, coordinated to the catalytic Ca2+, donates a proton to Asp121 and then attacks the tetrahedral phosphoacyl intermediate to liberate the diisopropylphosphate product. In contrast, the calculated free energy barrier for hydrolysis of (S)-sarin by the same mechanism is highly unfavorable, primarily due to the instability of the pentavalent phosphoenzyme species. Instead, simulations suggest that hydrolysis of (S)-sarin proceeds by a mechanism in which Asp229 could activate an intervening water molecule for nucleophilic attack on the substrate. These findings may lead to improved strategies for engineering DFPase and related six-bladed -propeller folds for more efficient degradation of OP compounds.

Momentum transport in the vicinity of q{sub min} in reverse shear tokamaks due to ion temperature gradient turbulence

SciTech Connect

We present an analytic study of momentum transport of tokamak plasmas in the vicinity of minimum safety factor (q) position in reversed magnetic shear configuration. Slab ion temperature gradient modes with an equilibrium flow profile are considered in this study. Quasi-linear calculations of momentum flux clearly show the novel effects of q-curvature on the generation of intrinsic rotation and mean poloidal flow without invoking reflectional symmetry breaking of parallel wavenumber (k{sub ?}). This q-curvature effect originates from the inherent asymmetry in k{sub ?} populations with respect to a rational surface due to the quadratic proportionality of k{sub ?} when q-curvature is taken into account. Discussions are made of possible implications of q-curvature induced plasma flows on internal transport barrier formation in reversed shear tokamaks.

Uncertainty in Particle Number Modal Analysis during Transient Operation of Compressed Natural Gas, Diesel, and Trap-Equipped Diesel Transit Buses

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

A number of recent studies have examined the mass- and number-weighted particulate emissions from diesel engines and vehicles, chiefly using laboratory tests under steady-state vehicle or engine operation. ... However, there remains little fundamental data on the relationships between vehicle operating mode (cruise, idle, acceleration, decelera tion) and ultrafine particle emissions, both for diesel and especially for diesel alternatives. ... The number of ELPI data points measured for individual test cycles ranged from 120 to 1000, depending on the recorded ELPI time resolution and overall length of the driving cycle (?10?35 min). ...
