Thermoregulation in Steller Sea Lions: a modelling approach

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The Steller sea lion, largest of the otariids, is currently listed as endangered, in parts of its range, due to a substantial population decline over the past three decades. The most prominent hypothesis for this decrease is a reduced juvenile survival resulting from increased nutritional stress. Consequently, energetic demands are unable to be met by energy input. To better understand this relationship, an energetics model using relevant published data incorporating environmental conditions commonly experienced by sea lions in the wild has been constructed for otariids, focusing on Stellers. This predictive, individual-based physiological model allows the assessment of heat loss, from which costs of thermoregulation can be estimated for both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The main aim of this system is to incorporate possible interactions between a number of factors, including the compensatory effects of the heat increment of feeding, the heat generated by locomotion, and the effect of body condition. Under the environmental conditions tested in water, Steller sea lions appear to require additional energy for thermoregulation, unless they are moving and generating additional heat as a result of the locomotion. While resting in air sea lions are within their thermal neutral zone during sunny conditions on clear days. However, when there is a lack of direct solar radiation, either at night or when it is cloudy, or under very cold conditions, sea lions must generate extra heat for thermoregulation. These costs are in part offset if the sea lion has recently fed and is therefore generating additional energy from the heat increment of feeding. For all the conditions tested, smaller sea lions, or those with poorer body condition, are most at risk from the effects of the cold and incur the greatest thermoregulatory cost. Using this model, the physical and environmental conditions under which sea lions utilize extra energy for thermoregulation can be established in addition to the key factors that may ultimately cause an energetic imbalance in Steller sea lions.

Gas from the top of the barrel

SciTech Connect

Refining management has recently entailed a search for that special niche in all the refinery process options that will make the overall operation profitable in the face of increasing impact of environmental regulation, decreasing demand through conservation, and variations in crude oil pricing. One such niche, bottom of the barrel processing, was attractive enough to result in major new and revamp projects which have contributed positively to direct refinery cost economics but not significantly to profitability. Today, proposed regulations reducing gasoline vapor pressure and forecasts of excess LPG supplies suggest that the other end of the barrel - the top - should be considered. Conventional uses of LPG in home heating and cooling, as petrochemical feedstocks, in gasoline blending, and, in limited amounts, as transportation fuels are well, or over, served. At the same time, recovery of LPG's from gas and refinery processing is increasing the supply. Those C/sub 3/-C/sub 4/ paraffin hydrocarbons can be converted economically to transportation fuels.

Effects of core barrel on vessel seismic loadings. [LMFBR

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Reliability of reactor systems under seismic events is a major concern for the safety of the nuclear power plants. This paper deals with the effects of the core barrel on the seismic response of reactor tanks. The main emphases are the effects of core barrel on the free-surface wave height and the fluid coupling effects between the core barrel and primary tank. This study represents an initial step to investigate the effects of in-tank components, structures on the seismically-induced hydrodynamic behavior of the reactor tanks. To simplify the analysis, the tank used in the study is simulated by a two-dimensional model. Two parametric studies were carried out in which the wall flexibility and location of core barrel were used as parameters respectively.

The Sodium Dichromate Barrel Disposal Site was used in 1945 for disposal of crushed barrels. The site location is the sole waste site within the 100-IU-4 Operable Unit. The Waste Information Data System (WIDS 1992) assumes that the crushed barrels contained 1% residual sodium dichromate at burial time and that only buried crushed barrels are at the site. Burial depth is shallow since visual inspection finds numerous barrel debris on the surface. A non-time-critical ERA proposal includes preparation of an engineering evaluation and cost analysis (EE/CA) section. The EE/CA is a rapid, focused evaluation of available technologies using specific screening factors to assess feasibility, appropriateness, and cost. The ERA goal is to reduce the potential for any contaminant migration from the landfill to the soil column, groundwater, and Columbia River. Since the landfill is the only waste site within the operable unit, the ERA will present a final remediation of the 100-IU-4 operable unit.

Thermoregulation in Steller sea lions: an experimental approach

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The availability of baseline thermal flux data is important for testing hypotheses of endangered species such as the Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), whose numbers have declined since the 1960s by more than 80% in portions of their range. The overall objective of this study was to quantify heat flow in Steller sea lions under controlled conditions at various water temperatures, flow speeds, and for stationary versus foraging animals. Heat flux and skin temperature data were collected from seven captive Steller sea lions using heat flux sensors (HFSs) with embedded thermistors. Optimal sensor placement was determined using infrared thermography to measure the major pathways of heat flow along the surface of the animals. Experiments were conducted on swimming animals in a large habitat tank with and without a harness to test for effects of increased hydrodynamic drag, and on stationary animals in a temperature controlled swim flume. In the latter, measurements were taken at three water temperatures (9.0 0.2 C, n=5; 7.0 0.2 C, n=5; and 4.0 0.0 C, n=5) and five current settings (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.0 m/s). The novel sensor attachment technique designed and utilized in this study allowed for the collection of heat flux data independent of human manipulation during actual measurements. Results from infrared thermography and HFSs revealed consistent spatial patterns in heat loss for foraging animals, suggesting that the body trunk plays an important role in temperature regulation. Mean heat flux for animals swimming with a harness was significantly greater than mean heat flux for unencumbered animals, and heat flux increased with decreasing water temperatures. These data provide insight into the thermoregulatory responses of Steller sea lions, and show that although animals lose more heat in colder water, they also unload rather than conserve excess heat when swimming with drag. These data represent valuable new direct measurements of heat flux for Steller sea lions in water using animal-borne heat flux sensors, and may be useful for comparison with other swimming otariids.

Statistics don't just help us answer trivia questions - they also help us make intelligent decisions. If I heat my home with natural gas, I'm probably interested in what natural gas prices are likely to be this winter. If my business manufactures solar panels, I would want to know how

MIL-L-87177 and CLT:X-10 Lubricants Improve Electrical Connector Fretting Corrosion Behavior

SciTech Connect

We have conducted a fretting research project using MIL-L-87177 and CLT: X-10 lubricants on Nano-miniature connectors. When they were fretted without lubricant, individual connectors first exceeded our 0.5 ohm failure criteria from 2,341 to 45,238 fretting cycles. With additional fretting, their contact resistance increased to more than 100,000 ohms. Unmodified MIL-L-87177 lubricant delayed the onset of first failure to between 430,000 and over 20,000,000 fretting cycles. MIL-L-87177 modified by addition of Teflon powder delayed first failure to beyond 5 million fretting cycles. Best results were obtained when Teflon was used and also when both the straight and modified lubricants were poured into and then out of the connector. CLT: X-10 lubricant delayed the onset of first failure to beyond 55 million cycles in one test where a failure was actually observed and to beyond 20 million cycles in another that was terminated without failure. CLT: X-10 recovered an unlubricated connector driven deeply into failure, with six failed pins recovering immediately and four more recovering during an additional 420 thousand fretting cycles. MIL-L-87177 was not able to recover a connector under similar conditions.

Bottom-up forcing and the decline of Steller sea lions

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Declines of Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) populations in the Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska could be a consequence of physical oceanographic changes associated with the 1976--77 climate regime shift. Changes in ocean climate are hypothesized to have affected the quantity, quality, and accessibility of prey, which in turn may have affected the rates of birth and death of sea lions. Recent studies of the spatial and temporal variations in the ocean climate system of the North Pacific support this hypothesis. Ocean climate changes appear to have created adaptive opportunities for various species that are preyed upon by Steller sea lions at mid-trophic levels. The east--west asymmetry of the oceanic response to climate forcing after 1976-- 77 is consistent with both the temporal aspect (populations decreased after the late 1970s) and the spatial aspect of the decline (western, but not eastern, sea lion populations decreased). These broad-scale climate variations appear to be modulated by regionally sensitive biogeographic structures along the Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska, which include a transition point from coastal to open-ocean conditions at Samalga Pass westward along the Aleutian Islands. These transition points delineate distinct clusterings of different combinations of prey species, which are in turn correlated with differential population sizes and trajectories of Steller sea lions. Archaeological records spanning 4000 yr further indicate that sea lion populations have experienced major shifts in abundance in the past. Shifts in ocean climate are the most parsimonious underlying explanation for the broad suite of ecosystem changes that have been observed in the North Pacific Ocean in recent decades.

On the property of measurements with the PTW microLion chamber in continuous beams

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Purpose: The performance of liquid ionization chambers, which may prove to be useful tools in the field of radiation dosimetry, is based on several chamber and liquid specific characteristics. The present work investigates the performance of the PTW microLion liquid ionization chamber with respect to recombination losses and perturbations from ambient electric fields at various dose rates in continuous beams. Methods: In the investigation, experiments were performed using two microLion chambers, containing isooctane (C{sub 8}H{sub 18}) and tetramethylsilane [Si(CH{sub 3}){sub 4}] as the sensitive media, and a NACP-02 monitor chamber. An initial activity of approximately 250 GBq {sup 18}F was employed as the radiation source in the experiments. The initial dose rate in each measurement series was estimated to 1.0 Gy min{sup -1} by Monte Carlo simulations and the measurements were carried out during the decay of the radioactive source. In the investigation of general recombination losses, employing the two-dose-rate method for continuous beams, the liquid ionization chambers were operated at polarizing voltages 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 300 V. Furthermore, measurements were also performed at 500 V polarizing voltage in the investigation of the sensitivity of the microLion chamber to ambient electric fields. Results: The measurement results from the liquid ionization chambers, corrected for general recombination losses according to the two-dose-rate method for continuous beams, had a good agreement with the signal to dose linearity from the NACP-02 monitor chamber for general collection efficiencies above 70%. The results also displayed an agreement with the theoretical collection efficiencies according to the Greening theory, except for the liquid ionization chamber containing isooctane operated at 25 V. At lower dose rates, perturbations from ambient electric fields were found in the microLion chamber measurement results. Due to the perturbations, measurement results below an estimated dose rate of 0.2 Gy min{sup -1} were excluded from the present investigation of the general collection efficiency. The perturbations were found to be more pronounced when the chamber polarizing voltage was increased. Conclusions: By using the two-dose-rate method for continuous beams, comparable corrected ionization currents from experiments in low and medium energy photon beams can be achieved. However, the valid range of general collection efficiencies has been found to vary in a comparison between experiments performed in continuous beams of 120 kVp x ray, and the present investigation of 511 keV annihilation photons. At very high dose rates in continuous beams, there are presently no methods that can be used to correct for general recombination losses and at low dose rates the microLion chamber may be perturbed by ambient electric fields. Increasing the chamber polarizing voltage, which diminishes the general recombination effect, was found to increase the microLion chamber sensitivity to ambient electric fields. Prudence is thus advised when employing the microLion chamber in radiation dosimetry, as ambient electric fields of the strength observed in the present work may be found in many common situations. Due to uncertainties in the theoretical basis for recombination losses in liquids, further studies on the underlying theories for the initial and general recombination effect are needed if liquid ionization chambers are to become a viable option in high precision radiation dosimetry.

Gopherus Agassizii (Desert Tortoise). Predation/Mountain Lions (Pre-Print)

SciTech Connect

During a long-term study on tortoise growth within 3 fenced 9-ha enclosures in Rock Valley, Nevada Test Site (NTS), Nye County, Nevada, USA, tortoises have been captured annually since 1964 (Medica et al. 1975. Copeia 1975:630-643; Turner et al. 1987. Copeia 1987:974-979). Between early August and mid October 2003 we observed a significant mortality event. The Rock Valley enclosures were constructed of 6 x 6 mm mesh 1.2 m wide hardware cloth, buried 0.3 m in the soil with deflective flashing on both sides on the top to restrict the movement of small mammals and lizards from entering or leaving the enclosures (Rundel and Gibson 1996, Ecological communities and process in a Mojave Desert ecosystem: Rock Valley, Nevada, Cambridge University Press, Great Britain. 369 pp.). On August 6, 2003, the carcass of an adult female Desert Tortoise No.1411 (carapace length 234 mm when alive) was collected while adult male tortoise No.4414 (carapace length 269 mm) was observed alive and in good health on the same day. Subsequently the carcass of No.4414 was found on October 16, 2003. Between October 16-17, 2003, the remains of 6 (5 adult and 1 juvenile) Desert Tortoises were found, some within each of the 3 enclosures in Rock Valley. A seventh adult tortoise was found on September 26, 2006, its death also attributed to the 2003 mortality event based upon the forensic evidence. Each of the 7 adult Desert Tortoises had the central portion of their carapace broken open approximately to the dorsal portion of the marginal scutes while the plastron was still intact (Figure 1A). Adjacent to 7 of the 8 remains we located numerous bone fragments including parts of the carapace and limbs as well as dried intestines in a nearby Range Rhatany (Krameria parvifolia) shrub. The significance of the frequent use of this shrub is puzzling. Three of the Desert Tortoise shell remains possessed distinctive intercanine punctures measuring 55-60 mm center to center indicating that this was an adult sized Mountain Lion. By comparison, a 2 year old male Mountain Lion salvaged on NTS had an upper intercanine bite width of 45 mm, and a 6 month old kitten measured 35mm respectively. The Mountain Lion (Puma concolor) is the only predator that exists in southern Nevada that could possibly have a bite with a gap between its upper canine teeth that large (Murmann et al. 2006. J. Forensic Sci. 51:846-860). The appearance of the shell remains in Figure 1A is similar to that depicting Jaguar (Panthera onca) predation, on the Amazonian Tortoise (Geochelone denticulata) as illustrated by Emmons (1989. J. Herpetol. 23:311-314) with the majority of the carapace broken open and the plastron still intact. Predation of Desert Tortoises by Mountain Lions was also documented in 1993 in southern Arizona (Little Shipp Wash Plot), where 7 of 8 carcasses found were attributed to Mountain Lion predation (Averill-Murray et al. 2002. In. T.R.Van Devender [ed.], The Sonoran Desert Tortoise: Natural History, Biology, and Conservation, pp.109-134. University of Arizona Press and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson, Arizona). Similarly, predation by a Mountain Lion has been reported on the Argentine Tortoise (Chelonoidis chilensis) in Argentina (Acosta et al. 2004. Herpetol. Review 35:53-54), and a Mountain Lion kitten was observed to kill and consume a portion of the carapace of a Texas Tortoise (Gopherus berlandieri) in west Texas (Adams et al. 2006. Southwestern Nat. 51:581-581). Over the past 45 years this Desert Tortoise population has been monitored yearly, with no prior evidence of predation to tortoises within the fenced enclosures. On several occasions other predators such as Bobcats (Lynx rufus) have been observed within the study enclosures for as long as a week. Evidence of Kit Fox (Vulpes macrotus) sign has been observed on numerous occasions, and a Spotted Skunk (Spilogale putorius) and Longtail Weasels (Mustela frenata) have been captured and released (B.G. Maza, pers. comm.; Medica 1990. Great Basin Nat. 50:83-84), while Coyotes (Canis latrans) were never observed within th

Site geotechnical considerations for expansion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to one billion barrels

SciTech Connect

Eight Gulf Coast salt domes have emerged as candidate sites for possible expansion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to one billion barrels. Two existing SPR sites, Big Hill, TX, and Weeks Island, LA, are among the eight that are being considered. To achieve the billion barrel capacity, some 25 new leached caverns would be constructed, and would probably be established in two separate sites in Louisiana and Texas because of distribution requirements. Geotechnical factors involved in siting studies have centered first and foremost on cavern integrity and environmental acceptability, once logistical suitability is realized. Other factors have involved subsidence and flooding potential, loss of coastal marshlands, seismicity, brine injection well utility, and co-use by multiple operators. 5 refs., 11 figs., 2 tabs.

Stratigraphy and depositional environment of upper Cambrian Red Lion Formation, southwestern Montana

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The Red Lion Formation was examined along a northwest-southeast transect from Missoula to Bozeman, Montana. Lateral equivalents are the Snowy Range Formation east of Bozeman and the upper Fishtrap Dolomite in northwest Montana. The basal Dry Creek Member (0-5 m) consists of shale interbedded with quartz siltstones and sandstones. The overlying Sage Member, up to 115 meters in thickness, is characterized by ribbon carbonate beds containing lime mudstone and quartzose calcisiltite couplets arranged in fining-upward sequences 1-5 cm thick. Couplets are interlayered in places with thin (1-5 cm) to medium bedded (6-70 cm) units of laminated and non-laminated calcareous siltstones, flat-pebble conglomerates, trilobite packstones, cryptalgal boundstones, bioturbated lime mudstones and shales. In places, the upper Sage contains columnar and domal algal features. The Red Lion Formation is considered to be one Grand Cycle with the Dry Creek representing a lower inner detrital half-cycle and the Sage an upper carbonate half-cycle. The Dry Creek formed as the result of a westward clastic pulse from the inner detrital belt across an intrashelf basin onto outer middle carbonate peritidal complexes of the underlying Pilgrim Formation. Lower Sage ribbon rocks were deposited in storm-crossed, below wave-base areas. During deposition of the upper Sage, shallowing formed discontinuous algal-peritidal complexes over much of western and central Montana. These complexes were less extensive than earlier Cambrian buildups owing to slower rates of basin subsidence and clastic input suppressing carbonate production.

South Belridge Field reaches milestone with its billionth barrel of crude oil

SciTech Connect

An 84-year-old California oil field which for at least the first two decades of its life was regarded as one of the minor fields of Kern County in May reached a plateau attained previously by only 11 fields in the United States. The South Belridge field 35 miles west of Bakersfield produced its one billionth barrel of oil, thus qualifying for membership in oil production`s most exclusive club. The other billion-barrel fields are Alaska`s Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk River; California`s Wilmington and Huntington Beach; Oklahoma`s ShoVel-Tum; and Texas` East Texas, Yates, Kelly-Snyder, Slaughter, Wasson and Panhandle. California`s Ventura field presently is believed to be the only other field in the United States with the potential to produce one billion barrels. The field, to the first of this year had produced 930.2 MMbo and had estimated reserves of 81.8 MMbo. Production in the South Belridge field last year totaled 43.8 MMbo, or an average of 120 Mbo/d, which was enough to make the field the fifth most productive in the United States.

Oil output increased by 1 million barrels per day in 2013...and is expected to repeat that growth rate during 2014....according to the new forecast from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. U.S. crude oil production is forecast to average 8.5 million barrels per day this year and then rise to 9.3 million barrels per day in 2015. That would be the highest yearly oil output since 1972, and just 300,000 barrels per day below the all-time production high of 9.6 million barrels per day set in 1970. Most of the oil production growth will come from increased drilling in the shale formations in

OPTIMIZING CENTRIFUGAL BARREL POLISHING FOR MIRROR FINISH SRF CAVITY AND RF TESTS AT JEFFERSON LAB

SciTech Connect

We performed Centrifugal Barrel Polishing (CBP) on a 1.3 GHz fine grain TESLA single cell cavity and 1.5 GHz fine grain CEBAF high gradient superconducting radio frequency (SRF) single cell cavity following a modified recipe originally developed at Fermi National Accelerator Lab (FNAL). We were able to obtain a mirror like surface similar to that obtained at FNAL, while reducing the number of CBP steps and total processing time. This paper will discuss the change in surface and subsequent cavity performance post CBP, after a 800 C bake (no pre-bake chemistry) and minimal controlled electro-polishing (10 micron). In addition to Q vs. E{sub ACC} thermometry mapping with preheating characteristics and optical inspection of the cavity after CBP will also be shown.

Analysis of refiners' total barrel costs and revenues from the sale of petroleum products, 1976 to 1979

SciTech Connect

In this report, the Economic Regulatory Administration has evaluated refiners' costs and revenues from the sale of major petroleum products from July 1976 through December 1979. This report represents a continuing effort to assess No. 2 heating oil prices and margins in that it updates prior middle distillate studies through March 1980. The analysis examines selling prices and costs associated with each major petroleum product category and a combination of petroleum products (total barrel) from a sample of nine refiners. The total barrel approach was adopted to reduce distortions caused by varying methods of allocation of costs among regulated and unregulated products by refiners. This report determines the extent to which increased costs were recovered on controlled products and whether refiners obtained greater cost recoupment on decontrolled products than would have been allowed under continued controls. The principal methods of measurement used to evaluate product pricing levels for the nine refiners surveyed were cost recoupment (Chapter III), gross margins (Chapter IV), and net margins (Chapter V). Gross margins were derived by subtracting average crude oil costs from average product selling prices for individual product categories and the total barrel. Net margins were derived by subtracting average crude oil costs as well as average marketing, manufacturing, and purchased product costs from average selling prices for individual product categories and the total barrel.

Characterizing the winter movements and diving behavior of subadult Steller sea lions (eumetopias jubatus) in the north-central Gulf of Alaska

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Recent studies indicate a 70% decrease in the Alaskan Steller sea lion (SSL) population (ca. 5% per year) since the early 1980's. In accordance with a 1997 status classification of the Western Steller sea lion (WSSL) stock as endangered, the "critical habitat" for the species was to be defined. This habitat has now been designated to include 10-20 nautical mile buffer zones around most rookeries and haulouts in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) and Aleutian Islands. However, these zones were based on limited, summer, foraging data. The primary objective of this study was to characterize juvenile SSL diving behavior and habitat use along the Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound (PWS) from winter to spring. Fifteen free ranging, subadult SSL of both sexes were captured and equipped with satellite telemeters at five haulout sites in PWS and Resurrection Bay, Alaska. Telemeters transmitted for an average of 122 days (range 38-181 days). A total of 11,692 locations were received and 217,419 dives recorded. All sea lions exhibited localized movements parallel or close to shore (3-15 km offshore). Young of the year (YOY) exhibited high site fidelity. Older juvenile sea lion lions were less restricted in their movements and traveled greater distances (200-400km) visiting a variety of islands, buoys, and other locations in PWS. Most dives were short (mean duration = 1.1 min) and shallow (mean depth = 10.8 m), with animals diving to an average maximum depth of 193 m. During winter (January and February), many dives (>40%) occurred during the daytime (0900-1500 LT). However, by April and May this pattern shifted and the animals made most of their dives (>40%) during the night (2100-0300 LT). This relationship was more pronounced for dives deeper than 20 m and coincided with the seasonal increase in photoperiod. Subadult SSL, especially YOY, remained within the 20 nautical mile coastal zone during winter and spring. Shallow, nearshore waters provide important habitat during this critical period of transition to nutritional independence. However, more conclusive data on SSL foraging ecology is necessary to better understand locations and depths preferred by the species.

NEW GUN CAPABILITY WITH INTERCHANGABLE BARRELS TO INVESTIGATE LOW VELOCITY IMPACT REGIMES AT THE LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY HIGH EXPLOSIVES APPLICATIONS FACILITY

SciTech Connect

A new gas gun capability is being activated at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories located in the High Explosives Applications Facility (HEAF). The single stage light gas (dry air, nitrogen, or helium) gun has interchangeable barrels ranging from 25.4 mm to 76.2 mm in diameter with 1.8 meters in length and is being fabricated by Physics Applications, Inc. Because it is being used for safety studies involving explosives, the gun is planned for operation inside a large enclosed firing tank, with typical velocities planned in the range of 10-300 m/s. Three applications planned for this gun include: low velocity impact of detonator or detonator/booster assemblies with various projectile shapes, the Steven Impact test that involves impact initiation of a cased explosive target, and the Taylor impact test using a cylindrical explosive sample impacted onto a rigid anvil for fracture studies of energetic materials. A highlight of the gun features, outline on work in progress for implementing this capability, and discussion of the planned areas of research will be included.

Extrusion of electrode material by liquid injection into extruder barrel

DOE Patents (OSTI)

An electrode sheet product is formed using an extruder having a feed throat and a downstream section by separately mixing an active electrode material and a solid polymer electrolyte composition that contains lithium salt. The active electrode material is fed into the feed throat of the extruder, while a portion of at least one fluid component of the solid polymer electrolyte composition is introduced to the downstream section. The active electrode material and the solid polymer electrolyte composition are compounded in a downstream end of the extruder. The extruded sheets, adhered to current collectors, can be formed into battery cells. 1 fig.

Extrusion of electrode material by liquid injection into extruder barrel

SciTech Connect

An electrode sheet product is formed using an extruder having a feed throat and a downstream section by separately mixing an active electrode material and a solid polymer electrolyte composition that contains lithium salt. The active electrode material is fed into the feed throat of the extruder, while a portion of at least one fluid component of the solid polymer electrolyte composition is introduced to the downstream section. The active electrode material and the solid polymer electrolyte composition are compounded in a downstream end of the extruder. The extruded sheets, adhered to current collectors, can be formed into battery cells.

Mil-hdbk-817, system development radiation hardness assurance. Technical report, 23 September 1988-29 June 1993

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The development program for a system with a radiation survivability program is very complex. Careful planning and execution of all phases of the development are necessary from the beginning. When there is a nuclear radiation requirement, Hardness Assurance (HA) must be part of the planning. While this document focuses primarily on activities related to the effects of nuclear radiation on electronic components and materials, a hardness assurance program must include all hostile environments employ balanced hardening concepts at all levels. It is the intent of this document to point out the agencies and aids available to help in constructing the most effective HA program for a given system and its mission. It is intended to provide guidance to both the system development Project Manager at the sponsoring agency and the Project Manager for the prime contractor.

Wastewater recycling and heat reclamation at the Red Lion Central Laundry, Portland, Oregon

SciTech Connect

This report discusses water, energy, and cost savings that can be achieved in a commercial laundry through the use of a wastewater recycling and heat recovery system. Cost savings are achieved through reductions in water use, reduction in sewage charges, reductions in water heating energy, and potential reductions in water treatment chemicals. This report provides an economic analysis of the impact of capital investment, daily consumption, and local utility rates on the payback period.

Continuous Cyclone Barrel Flame Temperature Measurement Using Ultraviolet-Visible Emission Spectroscopy

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Cyclone boilers represent more than 10 of the coal-fired boiler capacity in the United States and exhibit low electricity generation costs. Production of cyclone boilers, however, ended in the 1970s due to the Clean Air Act and the difficulty of cost-effectively meeting NOx emission requirements under New Source Review standards. By burning coal at high turbulence and temperature in cyclone boilers, coal ash is removed as molten slag, reducing the fly ash content of the flue gas. The high heat release ra...

Radiation Hardness Tests of SiPMs for the JLab Hall D Barrel Calorimeter

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We report on the measurement of the neutron radiation hardness of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) manufactured by Hamamatsu Corporation in Japan and SensL in Ireland. Samples from both companies were irradiated by neutrons created by a 1 GeV electron beam hitting a thin lead target at Jefferson Lab Hall A. More tests regarding the temperature dependence of the neutron radiation damage and self-annealing were performed on Hamamatsu SiPMs using a calibrated Am-Be neutron source from the Jefferson Lab Radiation Control group. As the result of irradiation both dark current and dark rate increase linearly as a function of the 1 MeV equivalent neutron fluence and a temperature dependent self-annealing effect is observed.

Three-Dimensionality in Quasi-Two Dimensional Flows: the Barrel Effects

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A scenario is put forward for the appearance of three-dimensionality both in quasi-2D rotating flows and quasi-2D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. We distinguish two forms of threedimensionalities, establish how both are ignited by the presence of walls, and how they relate to each other. One form involves velocities or currents along the rotation direction or the magnetic field, while the other leads to quadratic variations of these quantities along this direction. It is shown that the common tendency of these flows to two-dimensionality and the mechanisms of the first form of three-dimensionality can be explained through a single formal analogy between rotating flows, MHD flows and a wider class of flows, whereas the second form involves a distinct mechanism. Because of this trans-disciplinary character, these phenomena are active in such diverse flows as those in atmospheres, oceans and the cooling blankets of nuclear fusion reactors.

Wind Powering America (EERE)

Vol. 9, No. 5 - December 5, 2007 Vol. 9, No. 5 - December 5, 2007 PJM on wind Wind power is growing rapidly in the United States and in Pennsylvania where 8 wind farms that total 259 megawatts now operate. Those wind farms already generate enough power for about 80,000 homes. Another 4,714 megawatts are in various stages of development within Pennsylvania, which would create enough power for an additional 1.4 mil- lion homes. Just in the Keystone state, wind power is creating thousands of jobs. Across the nation, wind power provides hundreds of millions of dollars of tax payments and rental fees to land- owners, and displaces more and more electricity that would otherwise be made by burning coal, oil, or natural gas. Wind farms create zero air pollution; require no destructive

Hanford Treats Record Amount of Groundwater

Energy.gov (U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)) Indexed Site

September 13, 2011 September 13, 2011 Hanford Treats Record Amount of Groundwater RICHLAND, Wash. - Workers have treated more than 800 million gallons of groundwater at the Hanford Site so far this year, a record annual amount. Last year, workers with DOE contractor CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company treated 600 mil- lion gallons of groundwater at the site. "It's great to know the amount of treated groundwater is increasing. We are meeting our goals, which means we are protecting the Columbia River," said Bill Barrett, CH2M HILL director of pump and treat operations and maintenance. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act work to expand Hanford's capacity for treating contami- nated groundwater led to the 2011 record amount. The Recovery Act funded the installation of more

With American Recovery and Reinvestment Act With American Recovery and Reinvestment Act work now two-thirds of the way complete at Hanford's tank farms, the DOE Office of River Protection (ORP) is engaged in essential projects that will reduce the risk posed to the environment by more than 53 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored in 177 un- derground tanks. The waste is left over from decades of Cold War plutonium production. ORP and its prime contractor, Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS), have spent $209 million of $326 mil- lion from the Recovery Act to upgrade tank farm infrastruc- ture, extend the life of critical operating nuclear facilities and prepare the waste for delivery to the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) now under construction at Hanford.
