Pigment protein complexes involved in photosynthesis are remarkably efficient in transferring excitation energy from light harvesting antenna molecules to a reaction centre where it is converted to and stored as chemical energy. Recent experimental and theoretical studies suggest that quantum coherence and correlations may play a role in explaining this efficiency. We examine whether bipartite nonlocality, a property that verifies a strong correlation between two quantum systems, exists between different pairs of chromophore states in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex and how this is connected to the amount of bipartite entanglement. In particular, it is tested in what way these correlation properties are affected by different initial conditions (i.e., which chromophore is initially excited). When modeling the excitation energy transfer (EET) in the FMO complex with the hierarchically coupled equations of motions (HEOM), it is found that bipartite nonlocality indeed exists for some pairs of chromophore s...

We develop and present an improvement to the conventional technique for solving the Hierarchical Equations of Motion which reduces the memory cost by more than 75% while retaining the same convergence rate and accuracy. This allows for a full calculation of the population dynamics of the 24-site FMO trimer for long timescales with very little effort, and we present the first fully converged, exact results for the 7-site subsystem of the monomer, and for the full 24-site trimer. Owing to this new approach, our numerically exact 24-site, 2-exponential results are the most demanding HEOM calculations performed to date, surpassing the 50-site, 1-exponential results of Strumpfer and Schulten [2012, J. Chem. Thy. & Comp., 8, 2808]. We then show where our exact 7-site results deviate from the approximation of Ishizaki and Fleming [2009, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 106, 17255]. Our exact results are then compared to calculations using the incoherent Forster theory, and it is found that the energy transfer from the antenna to the reaction center occurs more than 50 times faster than the fluorescence lifetime of the excitation, whether or not coherence is considered. This means that coherence is not likely to improve the efficiency of the photosynthesis. In fact, the incoherent theory often tends to over-predict the rates of energy transfer, suggesting that in some cases electronic coherence may actually slow down the photosynthetic process.

The Fenna Mathews Olson (FMO) complex of green sulphur bacteria is an example of a photosynthetic pigment protein complex, in which the electronic properties of the pigments are modified by the protein environment to promote efficient excitonic energy transfer from antenna complexes to the reaction centres. Many of the electronic properties of the FMO complex can be extracted from knowledge of the static crystal structure. However, the recent observation and analysis of long lasting quantum dynamics in the FMO complex point to protein dynamics as a key factor in protecting and generating quantum coherence under laboratory conditions. While fast inter and intra molecular vibrations have been investigated extensively, the slow dynamics which effectively determine the optical inhomogeneous broadening of experimental ensembles has received less attention. Our study employs constrained geometric dynamics to study the flexibility in the protein network by efficiently generating the accessible conformational states ...

Our study employs constrained geometric dynamics to study the flexibility in the protein network by efficiently generating the accessible conformational states from the published crystal structure. Statistical and principle component analysis reveal highly correlated low frequency motions between functionally relevant elements, including strong correlations between pigments that are excitonically coupled. Our analysis reveals a hierarchy of structural interactions which enforce these correlated motions, from the level of monomer monomer interfaces right down to the alpha helices, beta sheets and pigments. In addition to inducing strong spatial correlations across the conformational ensemble, we find that the overall rigidity of the FMO complex is exceptionally high. We suggest that these observations support the idea of highly correlated inhomogeneous disorder of the electronic excited states, which is further supported by the remarkably low variance of the excitonic couplings of the conformational ensemble.
