Hydrosedimentary records and Holocene environmental dynamics in the Yamé Valley (Mali, Sudano-Sahelian West Africa)

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Research conducted in the Yamé Valley (Dogon Country, Mali) provides valuable information about the river systems and their Holocene evolution in Sudano-Sahelian West Africa. Past research in the region has relied primarily on marine and lacustrine records. The new results confirm correlation between palaeoclimatic fluctuations recorded in both the river system and in tropical African lakes. They offer a new continental milestone for understanding of the environmental repercussions of Holocene monsoon oscillations. These studies demonstrate the value of river systems as a palaeoenvironmental record and the role of palaeoclimatic and anthropogenic factors in the Holocene dynamics of Sudano-Sahelian hydrosystems.

Loss and damage from the double blow of flood and drought in Mozambique

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate variability and climate change is currently an important topic being discussed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This study investigated loss and damage from floods and droughts among rural households living near the Limpopo, Zambezi and Save rivers in Mozambique. We used a questionnaire survey (n = 303) and qualitative research tools. The study showed that farmers in the research areas were caught between two evils. In the uplands, conditions for agriculture are extremely poor and crop yields are low; moreover, farmers face considerable risk of crop failure when drought hits. In the lowlands, close to the river, soil and water conditions are more favourable, but these areas experience frequent floods. Evidence from this study shows that farmers in the research areas are severely affected by both floods and droughts, and their capacity to cope and adapt is limited. With very little livelihood diversification and poor access to markets, crop failures translate almost directly into severe food insecurity among the population.

Trade-offs of Water Use for Hydropower Generation and Biofuel Production in the Zambezi Basin in Mozambique

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract In the Zambezi basin in Mozambique, hydropower production is an important economic resource, with substantial development envisaged for the next decades. Irrigated agriculture currently plays a minor role, but irrigation development has a large potential and is an important government policy goal, especially aiming at the cultivation of biofuel crops. This contribution assesses interrelations and trade-offs between these two water-dependent development options. Scenario simulations under different climate and development assumptions show that adverse impacts of irrigation withdrawal on hydropower are low. Consequently, the use of water for irrigated agriculture can generate higher economic benefits than the use for hydropower production.

Sources of PM2.5 impacting on Gran Canaria, Spain

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract This paper reports on sequential aerosol sample sets collected at the Campus de Tafira, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), in 2010. Gran Canaria is located approximately 250 km off the coast of North Africa and at the northern margin of the dominant Saharan dust plumes being blown westward across the Atlantic Ocean. PM2.5 aerosol samples were collected on 47 mm filter substrates of Teflon®, quartz fiber and Nuclepore®, generally at weekly sampling intervals. Subsets of these were analyzed for their mass, as well as elemental and ionic compositions. The 2010 annual geometric mean PM2.5 concentration at Tafira was 6.2 ?g/m3, with only two particularly dusty events. From a simultaneous PM10 study at the same site, a PM2.5/PM10 mass ratio of 0.35 was calculated. Diagnostic chemical ratios for PM2.5, for both moderate and severe Saharan dust events (calimas) in 2010 are: Al : Si : K : Ti : Mn : Fe : Sr 1 : 2.818 : 0.330 : 0.078 : 0.012 : 0.847 : 0.0088 . To better understand the mineralogy of the aerosols and for inter-comparison purposes, normative mineral compositions were calculated from the chemical compositions. Depending on their transport patterns, four source regions, each with a distinct mineralogical signature were distinguished. The Northwest to North sector (Oceanic NW) aerosols contain evaporites, secondary ammonium sulfate, lesser amounts of organic carbon, and minor amounts of quartz and other silicates. The North to Northeast sector (Europe NE) generated aerosols of evaporites, ammonium sulfate and organic carbon. The Northeast (Africa NE) sector, with influx of air from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, contained evaporites and secondary ammonium sulfate with some organic carbon, and minor amounts of silicates and quartz. In 2010, the main African transport pathway from the Sahara region and across northern Mali, northern Mauritania, Western Sahara and Morocco was responsible for elevated concentrations of mineral dust during calima events.

Renewable energy for sustainable development in Africa: a review

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Renewable energy usage in Africa has been reviewed using South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria and Mali as case studies. The various national energy policies of these countries were analysed and areas that require attention to achieve sustainability were highlighted. On the overall, the success of sustainable development in Africa lies in addressing the imminent energy crisis in the continent. Excessive usage of fuel wood is already creating considerable environmental problems especially in the Sahel. Africa has all the potentials to solve its energy problems if appropriate infrastructural support can be provided for harnessing the abundant renewable resources in the continent, and if skills are pooled together and experiences shared in addressing the key issues.

World frontiers beckon oil finders

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This paper discusses the international aspects of the petroleum industry. Most who work in the industry agree that the possibilities for huge are found largely in international regions. Something that is helping fuel that possibility is the way countries are increasingly opening their doors to US oil industry involvement. Listed in this paper is a partial list of the reported projects now underway around the world involving US companies. It is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather an indication of how work continues despite a general lull atmosphere for the oil industry. These include Albania, Bulgaria, Congo, Czechoslovakia, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Ireland, Malta, Madagascar, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Panama, Paraquay, and Senegal.

What is industry's deepwater capability

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Industry now has drilled many wells in water depths of from 2000 to 5000 ft offshore countries like Canada, Surinam, Australia, UK, Spain, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Gabon, Brazil, Mauritania, Indonesia, Morocco and Ireland. The US has the world's best technology and the world's best experience and most of the world's proven deepwater drilling equipment and contractors are in the US. However, the US has not released for exploration its deepwater areas. The OCS out to 600+ ft is being exlored in a routine manner by mobile, bottom-supported and floating drilling equipment. The continental slope (600 to 5000 ft.) is being explored by the special deepwater floating drilling units. The continental rise (5000 to 13,000 ft.) is industry's next objective for exploration. The technology and experience used in exploration drilling is applied to producing oil/gas in deepwater. Production is handled by a floating platform resembling a semi drilling rig with a production riser substituting for the drilling riser. Industry takes small, steady steps to develop its techniques for drilling and producing. (DP)

Pushing the Boundaries in Energy Technology: Materials Design for Battery Applications" Pushing the Boundaries in Energy Technology: Materials Design for Battery Applications" Co-Organizers: Elena Shevchenko (CNM), Mitra Taheri (Drexel University), and Mali Balasubramanian (APS) Batteries are a key element for storing and supplying energy. Transformational battery technologies require tailoring novel materials and/or incorporating new chemical processes. Energy storage devices are intrinsically complex with the relevant materials processes covering time-scales from picoseconds to years and length-scales from angstroms to millimeters. Advanced x-ray and electron microscopy methods have opened a new window by which vital structural and electronic properties of battery materials can be obtained at the appropriate spatio- temporal scales using spectroscopic, scattering and imaging techniques under real world

The potential impacts of border tax adjustments on imports of energy-intensive goods in the EU and USA markets

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Government action to address climate change has been very varied and industries in the developed world, especially those that which are energy intensive, are increasingly concerned about the potential negative impacts of abatement measures on their international competitiveness. This paper looks at the potential impacts of one measure which has been proposed to address these competitiveness concerns – border tax adjustments (BTAs). It finds that the potential impacts of such measures may not justify the complexity of their imposition. The impacts on competitiveness are likely to be limited and potential negative side effects on some poor developing countries cannot be ruled out. The country most likely to be impacted by BTAs in the EU and USA markets is China, while the low-income countries most likely to be affected are Niger, Mozambique and Tadjikistan, in the EU market and Liberia, Tadjikistan, and Uzbekistan in the USA market.

Strontium isotopic variations of Neoproterozoic seawater: Implications for crustal evolution

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The authors report high precision Sr isotopic data on carbonates from the Neoproterozoic Shaler Group, Victoria Island, Northwest Territories, Canada. Samples with low {sup 87}Rb/{sup 86}Sr ratios (<0.01) were selected for Sr isotopic analysis. {delta}{sup 18}O, Mn, Ca, Mg, and Sr data were used to recognize altered samples. The altered samples are characterized by high Mn/Sr ({ge}2) and variable {delta}{sup 18}O; most are dolomites. The data indicate that between ca. 790-850 Ma the {sup 87}Sr/{sup 86}Sr ratio of seawater varied between 0.70676 and 0.70561. The samples show smooth and systematic variation, with the lowest {sup 87}Sr/{sup 86}Sr value of 0.70561 at ca. 830 Ma. The low {sup 87}Sr/{sup 86}Sr ratio of carbonates from the lower parts of the section is similar to a value reported for one sample from the Adrar of Mauritania ({approx}900 Ma), West African Craton. Isotopic ratios from the upper part of the Shaler section are identical to values from the lower part of the Neoproterozoic Akademikerbreen Group, Spitsbergen. Although a paucity of absolute age determinations hinders attempts at the precise correlation of Neoproterozoic successions, it is possible to draw a broad outline of the Sr isotopic composition of seawater for this period. Data from this study and the literature are used to construct a curve of the {sup 87}Sr/{sup 86}Sr ratio of Neoproterozoic seawater. The Sr isotope composition of seawater reflects primarily the balance between continental Sr input through river input and mantle input via hydrothermal circulation of seawater through mid-ocean ridges. Coupling of Nd and Sr isotopic systems allows the authors to model changes in seafloor spreading rates (or hydrothermal flux) and continental erosion. The Sr hydrothermal flux and the erosion rate (relative to present-day value) are modeled for the period 500-900 Ma.

International energy outlook. Volume 1. Mideast, Far East, and Africa

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The developing nations of the Mideast, Far East, and Africa face a bleaker - and more-complicated - energy picture than that of the West. Rapid industrial and agricultural expansion in the region severely drains already-inadequate energy systems. Energy-importing countries find they must diversify and develop indigenous resources, but often lack the technical known-how to do so. Volume 1 is a compilation of official US government intelligence reports examining the way 22 countries in the Mideast, Far East, and Africa are responding to the energy problems. The countries covered are: Algeria, Australia, Burma, China, Egypt, Gabon, India, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Mozambique, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sudan, Taiwan, Tunisia and Turkey. The range and detail of country reports vary, due to availability of reports. Although the book details current energy situations, its main emphasis is on the future, including estimates of future production and consumption, and descriptions of energy development plans. Some of the countries in this region are fortunate to have petrochemical resources, while electric energy expansion is crucial to national development in all. Coal will be filling the gap left by diminishing oil supplies. 61 tables.
