  3. From Energy Audits to Home Performance: 30 Years of Articles in Home Energy Magazine

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Meier, Alan

    2014-08-11

Home Energy Magazine has been publishing articles about residential energy efficiency for 30 years. Its goal has been to disseminate technically reliable and neutral information to the practitioners, that is, professionals in the business of home energy efficiency. The articles, editorials, letters, and advertisements are a kind of window on the evolution of energy conservation technologies, policies, and organizations. Initially, the focus was on audits and simple retrofits, such as weatherstripping and insulation. Instrumentation was sparse sometimes limited to a ruler to measure depth of attic insulation and a blower door was exotic. CFLs were heavy, awkward bulbs which might, or might not, fit in a fixture. Saving air conditioning energy was not a priority. Solar energy was only for the most adventurous. Thirty years on, the technologies and business have moved beyond just insulating attics to the larger challenge of delivering home performance and achieving zero net energy. This shift reflects the success in reducing space heating energy and the need to create a profitable industry by providing more services. The leading edge of the residential energy services market is becoming much more sophisticated, offering both efficiency and solar systems. The challenge is to continue providing relevant and reliable information in a transformed industry and a revolutionized media landscape.

    2014-03-01

This issue of Continuum focuses on NREL's research to improve the energy efficiency of residential and commercial buildings. Heating, cooling, and lighting our homes and commercial structures account for more than 70% of all electricity used in the United States. That costs homeowners, businesses, and government agencies more than $400 billion annually, about 40% of our nation's total energy costs. Producing that energy contributes almost 40% of our nation's carbon dioxide emissions.By 2030, an estimated 900 billion square feet of new and rebuilt construction will be developed worldwide, providing an unprecedented opportunity to create efficient, sustainable buildings. Increasing the energy performance of our homes alone could potentially eliminate up to 160 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions and lower residential energy bills by $21 billion annually by the end of the decade.

  19. Powering a Home with Just 25 Watts of Solar PV. Super-Efficient Appliances Can Enable Expanded Off-Grid Energy Service Using Small Solar Power Systems

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Phadke, Amol A.; Jacobson, Arne; Park, Won Young; Lee, Ga Rick; Alstone, Peter; Khare, Amit

    2015-04-01

Highly efficient direct current (DC) appliances have the potential to dramatically increase the affordability of off-grid solar power systems used for rural electrification in developing countries by reducing the size of the systems required. For example, the combined power requirement of a highly efficient color TV, four DC light emitting diode (LED) lamps, a mobile phone charger, and a radio is approximately 18 watts and can be supported by a small solar power system (at 27 watts peak, Wp). Price declines and efficiency advances in LED technology are already enabling rapidly increased use of small off-grid lighting systems in Africa and Asia. Similar progress is also possible for larger household-scale solar home systems that power appliances such as lights, TVs, fans, radios, and mobile phones. When super-efficient appliances are used, the total cost of solar home systems and their associated appliances can be reduced by as much as 50%. The results vary according to the appliances used with the system. These findings have critical relevance for efforts to provide modern energy services to the 1.2 billion people worldwide without access to the electrical grid and one billion more with unreliable access. However, policy and market support are needed to realize rapid adoption of super-efficient appliances.

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Riley, M.

    1984-07-01

The energy-efficient building codes adopted by Tacoma, Washington will give the city a reservoir of power comparable to the water stored behind Grand Coulee Dam. The code standards reduce energy requirements 60%, a saving that will continue through the 50- to 60-year service life of the houses. The first to adopt the Northwest Power Planning Council (NWPPC) Model Conservation Stardards, Tacoma recognized that current electric power surpluses are temporary and that conservation is the cheapest way to get new power. The city adopted the plan despite its low rates because economic growth is likely to come from power-intensive industries. A support package for the plan combines building code compliance, an information system, marketing, and financial incentives.

    2006-01-01

With the aim of understanding the complex dynamics of crystal-melt interfaces and associated structural evolution, investigators in the field of Solidification Science are presented with the substantial problem of discerning the various relaxation processes that occur on multiple length and time scales, elucidating the fundamental physical mechanisms that permit them, quantifying the relevant energetic and kinetic contributors, and, ultimately, developing various analytical and numerical models for prediction and control of these phenomena. In recent years, the field of Solidification Science, a mature research area with its roots firmly established in physical metallurgy, has experienced a renaissance of sorts, marked by a great influx of researchers from physics, chemistry and mathematics. Whilst there has always been a clear connection between Solidification Science and the pure sciences, recent developments in theoretical approaches, experimental techniques and computational capabilities have contributed towards a renewed and widespread interest in the fundamentals of solidification phenomena, and to the emergence of new and promising avenues of investigation. Most notably, the continued development of phase-field methods and the emergence of powerful atomistic modelling strategies have given rise to an increased level of understanding and a new set of questions to be addressed regarding the stability and dynamics of crystal-melt interfaces. As new and more fundamental questions are posed, it becomes increasingly clear that continued advancement in this field will require a higher level of interaction between researchers conducting theoretical and experimental investigations, and that the barriers presented by such distinctions must be overcome. In the spirit of this multidisciplinary multi-approach outlook, a symposium, titled Frontiers in Solidification Science, was held on February 14 and 15, 2005, in San Francisco, California. The motivation for this

This issue of Continuum Magazine covers the depth and breadth of NREL's ever-expanding analytical capabilities. For example, in one project we are leading national efforts to create a computer model of one of the most complex systems ever built. This system, the eastern part of the North American power grid, will likely host an increasing percentage of renewable energy in years to come. Understanding how this system will work is important to its success - and NREL analysis is playing a major role. We are also identifying the connections among energy, the environment and the economy through analysis that will point us toward a 'water smart' future.

  13. Keeping the home fires burning

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Valenti, M.

    1993-07-01

Some utilities and thermal researchers are devising thermoelectric and thermophotovoltaic technologies to convert furnace heat to electricity and keep home heating systems functioning during extended power failures. Storms that damage power lines often leave homes without heat, since the electricity supplied to furnace blowers is cut along with all other electricity. One case in points is the March 1991 ice storm that left nearly 200,000 Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. customers without electrical power, some for up to two weeks. This led the Rochester, N.Y., utility, RG and E, to search for an independent power source that could provide homes with heat during prolonged outages. RG and E funded development of a continuous gas furnace by the GE Research and Development Center in Schenectady, N.Y., that would keep its customers' homes heated and provide some electricity during power outages. Since natural gas lines are rarely interrupted during a power outage, the furnace is still a potential source of heat, but only if there is some way to supply electricity that is independent of the grid, said Bruce Snow, manager and chief engineer of the technical services division at RG and E. The electricity would power the furnace blower, which blows hot air through air ducts, or run the motor that pumps water through a piping system to keep the house warm. Such a thermoelectrical system involves heating the two junctions of thermocouples, which are made of dissimilar wires, at two different temperatures in order to create electricity. A newer technology, thermophoto-voltaics, also converts heat to electricity. In this process described here, the heat causes an emitter to radiate a wavelength of light, which is converted into electricity by a photovoltaic unit.

A home energy assessment, also known as a home energy audit, is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. An assessment will show you problems that may, when corrected, save you significant amounts of money over time. This video shows some of the ways that a contractor may test your home during an assessment, and helps you understand how an assessment can help you move toward energy savings. Many public power systems have initiated home energy audit programs in response to the requests of their consumers. The manual provides smaller public power systems with the information and specific skills needed to design and develop a program of residential energy audits. The program is based on the following precepts: locally owned public systems are the best, and in many cases the only agencies available to organize and coordinate energy conservation programs in many smaller communities; consumers' rights to energy conservation information and assistance should not hinge on the size of the utility that serves them; in the short run, public power systems of all sizes should offer residential energy conservation assistance to their consumers, because such assistance is desirable, necessary, and in the public interest; and in the long run, such programs will complement national energy goals and will produce economic benefits for both consumers and the public power system. A detailed description of home audit program planning, organization, and management are given. (MCW)

  12. Formaldehyde measurements in five new unoccupied energy efficient manufactured homes

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Parker, G.B.; Onisko, S.A.

    1986-11-01

Week-long integrated formaldehyde levels were measured over eight weeks in five new unoccupied energy efficient manufactured homes. These homes were constructed to the specifications set forth in the Model Conservation Standards (MCS) established by the Northwest Power Planning Council for site-built homes. The MCS standards exceed the Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) standards that currently apply to manufactured homes nationwide. Two of the homes were located at Richland, Washington, and three homes were located at Vancouver, Washington. Among other features of the MCS, the homes are equipped with air-to-air heat exchangers (AAHX) to supply additional fresh air ventilation. The first four weeks of testing were conducted with the AAHX off and the second four-week measurement period was conducted with the AAHX continuously on the HI setting. Formaldehyde levels ranged from 0.047 ppM the fifth week of the testing in a double wide home (with the AAHX turned on) to 0.164 ppM in the single wide home in the first week of measurements with the AAHX off. At no time did the formaldehyde levels exceed 0.4 ppM, the HUD targeted indoor level based on HUD codes for formaldehyde emissions from plywood and particle board building materials used in the homes. There was no strong correlation between formaldehyde levels and the measured air exchange rate. 9 refs., 2 figs., 3 tabs.
