    1995-05-01

Waste logistics modeling is a powerful analytical technique that can be used for effective planning of future solid waste storage, treatment, and disposal activities. Proper waste management is essential for preventing unacceptable environmental degradation from ongoing operations, and is also a critical part of any environmental remediation activity. Logistics modeling allows for analysis of alternate scenarios for future waste flowrates and routings, facility schedules, and processing or handling capacities. Such analyses provide an increased understanding of the critical needs for waste storage, treatment, transport, and disposal while there is still adequate lead time to plan accordingly. They also provide a basis for determining the sensitivity of these critical needs to the various system parameters. This paper discusses the application of waste logistics modeling concepts to regional planning. In addition to ongoing efforts to aid in planning for a large industrial complex, the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) is currently involved in implementing waste logistics modeling as part of the planning process for material recovery and recycling within a multi-city region in the western US.

A system of coupled two logistic maps, one periodic and the other chaotic, is studied. It is found that with the variation of the coupling strength, the system displays several curious features such as the appearance of quadrupling of period, occurrence of isolated period three attractor and the coexistence of the Hopf and pitchfork bifurcations. Possible applications and extensions are discussed.

  9. Route to chaos in generalized logistic map

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    Rafa? Rak; Ewa Rak

    2015-02-01

Motivated by a possibility to optimize modelling of the population evolution we postulate a generalization of the well-know logistic map. Generalized difference equation reads: \\begin{equation} x_{n+1}=rx^p_n(1-x^q_n), \\end{equation} $x\\in[0,1],\\;(p,q)>0,\\;n=0,1,2,...$, where the two new parameters $p$ and $q$ may assume any positive values. The standard logistic map thus corresponds to the case $p=q=1$. For such a generalized equation we illustrate the character of the transition from regularity to chaos as a function of $r$ for the whole spectrum of $p$ and $q$ parameters. As an example we consider the case for $p=1$ and $q=2$ both in the periodic and chaotic regime. We focus on the character of the corresponding bifurcation sequence and on the quantitative nature of the resulting attractor as well as its universal attribute (Feigenbaum constant).

    Nadav M. Shnerb

    2004-03-25

Logistic growth process with nonlocal interactions is considered in one dimension. Spontaneous breakdown of translational invariance is shown to take place at some parameter region, and the bifurcation regime is identified for short and long range interactions. Domain walls between regions of different order parameter are expressed as soliton solutions of the reduced dynamics for nearest neighbor interactions. The analytic results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

We consider regular lattices of coupled chaotic maps. Depending on lattice size, there may exist a window in parameter space where complete synchronization is eventually attained after a transient regime. Close outside this window, an intermittent transition to synchronization occurs. While asymptotic transversal Lyapunov exponents allow to determine the synchronization threshold, the distribution of finite-time Lyapunov exponents, in the vicinity of the critical frontier, is expected to provide relevant information on phenomena such as intermittency. In this work we scrutinize the distribution of finite-time exponents when the local dynamics is ruled by the logistic map $x \\mapsto 4x(1-x)$. We obtain a theoretical estimate for the distribution of finite-time exponents, that is markedly non-Gaussian. The existence of correlations, that spoil the central limit approximation, is shown to modify the typical intermittent bursting behavior. The present scenario could apply to a wider class of systems with different local dynamics and coupling schemes.

The 2012 Gap Analysis of Department of Energy Radiological Sealed Sources, Standards, and Materials for Safeguards Technology Development [1] report, and the subsequent Reconciliation of Source Needs and Surpluses across the U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory Complex [2] report, resulted in the identification of 33 requests for nuclear or radiological sealed sources for which there was potentially available, suitable material from within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) complex to fill the source need. Available, suitable material was defined by DOE laboratories as material slated for excess, or that required recertification or refurbishment before being used for safeguards technology development. This report begins by outlining the logistical considerations required for the shipment of nuclear and radiological materials between DOE laboratories. Then, because of the limited need for transfer of matching sources, the report also offers considerations for an alternative approach – the shipment of safeguards equipment between DOE laboratories or technology testing centers. Finally, this report addresses repackaging needs for the two source requests for which there was available, suitable material within the DOE complex.

Logistics modeling is a powerful analytical technique for effective planning of waste storage, treatment, and disposal activities. Logistics modeling facilitates analyses of alternate scenarios for future waste flows, facility schedules, and processing or handling capacities. These analyses provide an increased understanding of the specific needs for waste storage, treatment, and disposal while adequate time remains to plan accordingly. They also help to determine the sensitivity of these needs to various system parameters. This paper discusses a logistics modeling system developed by the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) to aid in solid waste planning for a large industrial complex managing many different types and classifications of waste. The basic needs for such a system are outlined, and the approach adopted in developing the system is described. A key component of this approach is the development of a conceptual model that provides a flexible framework for modeling the waste management system and addressing the range of logistics and economic issues involved. Developing an adequate description of the waste management system being analyzed is discussed. Examples are then provided of the types of analyses that have been conducted. The potential application of this modeling system to different settings is also examined.

There exists in nature many examples of systems presenting self-limiting behaviour: population dynamics, structure engineering, Townsend's electron breakdown, nuclear decay in radioactive equilibrium, histeresis process, meteorological models, etcetera. In this work we call attention to the advantages the use of a variational formulation should provide to the study of self-regulated systems, such as a unified description of the related phenomena, further comprehension of the internal structure and symmetries of the related equations, and the determination of the equilibria points via the energy function. We study the case of logistic systems, obtaining explicitly several s-equivalent Lagrangeans corresponding to the Verhulst's equation. Some dynamical properties are discussed in the light of this approach. Expressions for the mean energy function are also obtained. Keywords: logistic equation, Verhulst's Lagrangean, self-regulated systems. PACS: 02.30.Zz, 45.20.Jj, 87.23.Cc

Logistic growth of diffusing reactants on spatial domains with long range competition is studied. The bifurcations cascade involved in the transition from the homogenous state to a spatially modulated stable solution is presented, and a distinction is made between a modulated phase, dominated by single or few wavenumbers, and the spiky phase, where localized colonies are separated by depleted region. The characteristic defects in the periodic structure are presented for each phase, together with the invasion dynamics in case of local initiation. It is shown that the basic length scale that controls the bifurcation is the width of the Fisher front, and that the total population grows as this width decreases. A mix of analytic results and extensive numerical simulations yields a comprehensive examination of the possible phases for logistic growth in the presence of nonlocal competition.

A construction of reversible extensions of dynamical systems which applies to arbitrary mappings (not necessarily with open range) is presented. It is based on calculating the maximal ideal space of C*-algebras that extends endomorphisms to partial automorphisms via partial isometric representations, and involves a newfound set of "parameters" (the role of parameters play chosen sets or ideals). Additionally, it is characterised as a universal object. As model examples, we give a thorough description of reversible extensions of logistic maps, and a classification of systems associated with compression of unitaries generating homeomorphisms of the circle.

The objectives of the radiological confirmatory survey were to collect adequate radiological data for use in evaluating the radiological condition of NHD land areas, warehouses, and support buildings. The data generated from the confirmatory survey activities were used to evaluate the results of the Final Status Survey Report (FSSR) submitted by Cabrera Services (Cabrera 2009). Cabrera has stated that all radioactive materials have been removed and that remediation of the open land areas and structure surfaces was complete, and that the NHD meets the criteria for unrestricted use.

Urban morphology has presented significant intellectual challenges to mathematicians and physicists ever since the eighteenth century, when Euler first explored the famous Konigsberg bridges problem. Many important regularities and allometries have been observed in urban studies, including Zipf's law and Gibrat's law, rendering cities attractive systems for analysis within statistical physics. Nevertheless, a broad consensus on how cities and their boundaries are defined is still lacking. Applying percolation theory to the street intersection space, we show that growth curves for the maximum cluster size of the largest cities in the UK and in California collapse to a single curve, namely the logistic. Subsequently, by introducing the concept of the condensation threshold, we show that natural boundaries of cities can be well defined in a universal way. This allows us to study and discuss systematically some of the allometries that are present in cities, thus casting light on the concept of ergodicity as relat...

There is relatively little literature that characterizes transportation and logistics challenges and the associated effects on U.S. wind markets. The objectives of this study were to identify the transportation and logistics challenges, assess the associated impacts, and provide recommendations for strategies and specific actions to address the challenges. The authors primarily relied on interviews with wind industry project developers, original equipment manufacturers, and transportation and logistics companies to obtain the information and industry perspectives needed for this study. They also reviewed published literature on trends and developments in increasing wind turbine size, logistics, and transportation issues.

    2014-11-01

To meet Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) cellulosic biofuel mandates, the United States will require an annual domestic supply of about 242 million Mg of biomass by 2022. To improve the feedstock logistics of lignocellulosic biofuels and access available biomass resources from areas with varying yields, commodity systems have been proposed and designed to deliver on-spec biomass feedstocks at preprocessing “depots”, which densify and stabilize the biomass prior to long-distance transport and delivery to centralized biorefineries. The harvesting, preprocessing, and logistics (HPL) of biomass commodity supply chains thus could introduce spatially variable environmental impacts into the biofuel life cycle due to needing to harvest, move, and preprocess biomass from multiple distances that have variable spatial density. This study examines the uncertainty in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of corn stover logisticsHPL within a bio-ethanol supply chain in the state of Kansas, where sustainable biomass supply varies spatially. Two scenarios were evaluated each having a different number of depots of varying capacity and location within Kansas relative to a central commodity-receiving biorefinery to test GHG emissions uncertainty. Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the spatial uncertainty in the HPL gate-to-gate sequence. The results show that the transport of densified biomass introduces the highest variability and contribution to the carbon footprint of the logistics HPL supply chain (0.2-13 g CO2e/MJ). Moreover, depending upon the biomass availability and its spatial density and surrounding transportation infrastructure (road and rail), logistics HPL processes can increase the variability in life cycle environmental impacts for lignocellulosic biofuels. Within Kansas, life cycle GHG emissions could range from 24 to 41 g CO2e/MJ depending upon the location, size and number of preprocessing depots constructed. However, this range can be minimized through optimizing the siting of preprocessing depots where ample rail infrastructure exists to supply biomass commodity to a regional biorefinery supply system

Sokhansanj, Shahabaddine [ORNL; Webb, Erin [ORNL; Turhollow Jr, Anthony F [ORNL

    2008-06-01

The Integrated Biomass Supply & Logistics (IBSAL) model is a dynamic (time dependent) model of operations that involve collection, harvest, storage, preprocessing, and transportation of feedstock for use at a biorefinery. The model uses mathematical equations to represent individual unit operations. These unit operations can be assembled by the user to represent the working rate of equipment and queues to represent storage at facilities. The model calculates itemized costs, energy input, and carbon emissions. It estimates resource requirements and operational characteristics of the entire supply infrastructure. Weather plays an important role in biomass management and thus in IBSAL, dictating the moisture content of biomass and whether or not it can be harvested on a given day. The model calculates net biomass yield based on a soil conservation allowance (for crop residue) and dry matter losses during harvest and storage. This publication outlines the development of the model and provides examples of corn stover harvest and logistics.

    2012-06-25

Many open problems in biology, as in the physical sciences, display nonlinear and 'chaotic' dynamics, which, to the extent possible, cannot be reasonably understood. Moreover, mathematical models which aim to predict/estimate unknown aspects of a biological system cannot provide more information about the set of biologically meaningful (e.g., 'hidden') states of the system than could be understood by the designer of the model ab initio. Here, the case is made for the utilization of such models to shift from a 'predictive' to a 'questioning' nature, and a simple natural-logarithm variation of the logistic polynomial map is presented that can invoke questions about protein trafficking in eukaryotic cells.

    V. Pankovic; M. Krmar; R. Glavatovic

    2009-07-30

In this work we consider the Peter principle and anti-Peter principle as the discrete logistic and discrete inverse logistic equation. Especially we discuss imprecisely estimated (by hierarchical control mechanism) carrying capacity, i.e. boundary (in)competence level of a hierarchy member. It implies that Peter principle holds two sub-principles. In the first one objective boundary competence level is increased for estimation error. In the second one objective boundary competence level is decreased for estimation error. Similarly, anti-Peter principle holds two sub-principles too. All this implies that paradoxical situations that follow from Peter and anti-Peter principle can be simply removed by decrease of the error of hierarchical (social) control. Also we discuss cases by Peter principle when error of the boundary competence level by estimation grows up. (Then, in fact, there is no estimation error but stimulation of the boundary level by control mechanism.) By first Peter sub-principle it implies anarchy in the social structure or, correspondingly, cancer in the biology and medicine, schizophrenia in the psychology and inflation in the economy. By second Peter sub-principle it implies a totalitary social structure (dictature or caste regime) or multiplex sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases in biology and medicine, servile mentality or low value complex in psychology and depression by hyperactive political influences in economy. Finally, monotonus changes of the stimulated part of boundary level cause corresponding phase transitions discussed on the example of the introspection in the psychology.

    2015-04-23

We point out the joint occurrence of Pascal triangle patterns and power-law scaling in the standard logistic map, or more generally, in unimodal maps. It is known that these features are present in its two types of bifurcation cascades: period and chaotic- band doubling of attractors. Approximate Pascal triangles are exhibited by the sets of lengths of supercycle diameters and by the sets of widths of opening bands. Additionally, power-law scaling manifests along periodic attractor supercycle positions and chaotic band splitting points. Consequently, the attractor at the mutual accumulation point of the doubling cascades, the onset of chaos, displays both Gaussian and power-law distributions. Their combined existence implies both ordinary and exceptional statistical-mechanical descriptions of dynamical properties.

  17. A closer look at coupled logistic maps at the edge of chaos

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    Ugur Tirnakli; Constantino Tsallis

    2015-03-30

We focus on a linear chain of $N$ first-neighbor-coupled logistic maps at their edge of chaos in the presence of a common noise. This model, characterised by the coupling strength $\\epsilon$ and the noise width $\\sigma_{max}$, was recently introduced by Pluchino et al [Phys. Rev. E {\\bf 87}, 022910 (2013)]. They detected, for the time averaged returns with characteristic return time $\\tau$, possible connections with $q$-Gaussians, the distributions which optimise, under appropriate constraints, the nonadditive entropy $S_q$, basis of nonextensive statistics mechanics. We have here a closer look on this model, and numerically obtain probability distributions which exhibit a slight asymmetry for some parameter values, in variance with simple $q$-Gaussians. Nevertheless, along many decades, the fitting with $q$-Gaussians turns out to be numerically very satisfactory for wide regions of the parameter values, and we illustrate how the index $q$ evolves with $(N, \\tau, \\epsilon, \\sigma_{max})$. It is nevertheless instructive on how careful one must be in such numerical analysis. The overall work shows that physical and/or biological systems that are correctly mimicked by the Pluchino et al model are thermostatistically related to nonextensive statistical mechanics when time-averaged relevant quantities are studied.

  18. IMPROVING BIOMASS LOGISTICS COST WITHIN AGRONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY CONSTRAINTS AND BIOMASS QUALITY TARGETS

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    J. Richard Hess; Kevin L. Kenney; Christopher T. Wright; David J. Muth; William Smith

    2012-10-01

Equipment manufacturers have made rapid improvements in biomass harvesting and handling equipment. These improvements have increased transportation and handling efficiencies due to higher biomass densities and reduced losses. Improvements in grinder efficiencies and capacity have reduced biomass grinding costs. Biomass collection efficiencies (the ratio of biomass collected to the amount available in the field) as high as 75% for crop residues and greater than 90% for perennial energy crops have also been demonstrated. However, as collection rates increase, the fraction of entrained soil in the biomass increases, and high biomass residue removal rates can violate agronomic sustainability limits. Advancements in quantifying multi-factor sustainability limits to increase removal rate as guided by sustainable residue removal plans, and mitigating soil contamination through targeted removal rates based on soil type and residue type/fraction is allowing the use of new high efficiency harvesting equipment and methods. As another consideration, single pass harvesting and other technologies that improve harvesting costs cause biomass storage moisture management challenges, which challenges are further perturbed by annual variability in biomass moisture content. Monitoring, sampling, simulation, and analysis provide basis for moisture, time, and quality relationships in storage, which has allowed the development of moisture tolerant storage systems and best management processes that combine moisture content and time to accommodate baled storage of wet material based upon “shelf-life.” The key to improving biomass supply logistics costs has been developing the associated agronomic sustainability and biomass quality technologies and processes that allow the implementation of equipment engineering solutions.

    2014-05-01

The average size of land based wind turbines installed in the United States has increased dramatically over time. As a result wind turbines are facing new transportation and logistics barriers that limit the size of utility scale land based wind turbines that can be deployed in the United States. Addressing these transportation and logistics barriers will allow for even further increases in U.S. turbine size using technologies under development for offshore markets. These barriers are important because larger taller turbines have been identified as a path to reducing the levelized cost of energy for electricity. Additionally, increases in turbine size enable the development of new low and moderate speed markets in the U.S. In turn, wind industry stakeholder support, market stability, and ultimately domestic content and manufacturing competitiveness are potentially affected. In general there is very little recent literature that characterizes transportation and logistics barriers and their effects on U.S. wind markets and opportunities. Accordingly, the objective of this paper is to report the results of a recent NREL study that identifies the barriers, assesses their impact and provides recommendations for strategies and specific actions.

  18. Some logistical considerations in designing a system of deep boreholes for disposal of high-level radioactive waste.

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Gray, Genetha Anne; Brady, Patrick Vane; Arnold, Bill Walter

    2012-09-01

Deep boreholes could be a relatively inexpensive, safe, and rapidly deployable strategy for disposing Americas nuclear waste. To study this approach, Sandia invested in a three year LDRD project entitled %E2%80%9CRadionuclide Transport from Deep Boreholes.%E2%80%9D In the first two years, the borehole reference design and backfill analysis were completed and the supporting modeling of borehole temperature and fluid transport profiles were done. In the third year, some of the logistics of implementing a deep borehole waste disposal system were considered. This report describes what was learned in the third year of the study and draws some conclusions about the potential bottlenecks of system implementation.

  19. The B-Exponential Map: A Generalization of the Logistic Map, and Its Applications In Generating Pseudo-random Numbers

Mahesh C Shastry; Nithin Nagaraj; Prabhakar G Vaidya

    2006-07-17

A 1-dimensional generalization of the well known Logistic Map is proposed. The proposed family of maps is referred to as the B-Exponential Map. The dynamics of this map are analyzed and found to have interesting properties. In particular, the B-Exponential Map exhibits robust chaos for all real values of the parameter B >= e^(-4). We then propose a pseudo-random number generator based on the B-Exponential Map by chaotically hopping between different trajectories for different values of B. We call this BEACH (B-Exponential All-Chaotic Map Hopping) pseudo-random number generator. BEACH successfully passes stringent statistical randomness tests such as ENT, NIST and Diehard. An implementation of BEACH is also outlined.

    2013-05-14

Today's most popular CPU can operate in two different computational modes for double precision computations. This fact is not very widely recognized among scientific computer users. The present paper reports the differences the modes bring about using the most thoroughly studied system in chaos theory, the logistic map. Distinct virtual periods due to finite precision come about depending on the computational modes for the parameter value corresponding to fully developed chaos. For other chaotic regime various virtual periods emerge depending on the computational modes and the mathematical expressions of the map. Differences in the bifurcation diagrams due to the modes and the expressions are surveyed exhaustively. A quantity to measure those differences is defined and calculated.

Public agencies like the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) award tens of billions of dollars in annual science funding. How can this money be distributed as efficiently as possible to best promote scientific innovation and productivity? The present system relies primarily on peer review of project proposals. In 2010 alone, NSF convened more than 15,000 scientists to review 55,542 proposals. Although considered the scientific gold standard, peer review requires significant overhead costs, and may be subject to biases, inconsistencies, and oversights. We investigate a class of funding models in which all participants receive an equal portion of yearly funding, but are then required to anonymously donate a fraction of their funding to peers. The funding thus flows from one participant to the next, each acting as if he or she were a funding agency themselves. Here we show through a simulation conducted over large-scale citation data (37M articles, 770M citations) t...

The Defense National Stockpile Center (DNSC), a field level activity of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has stewardship of a stockpile of thorium nitrate that has been in storage for decades. The stockpile is made up of approximately 3.2 million kg (7 million lb) of thorium nitrate crystals (hydrate form) stored at two depot locations in the United States. DNSC sought technical assistance from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to define and quantify the management options for the thorium nitrate stockpile. This paper describes methodologies and results comprising the work in Phase 1 and Phase 2. The results allow the DNSC to structure and schedule needed tasks to ensure continued safe long-term storage and/or phased disposal of the stockpile.

The Port Hope Project is part of the larger CAN$1.28 billion Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI), a community-based program for the development and implementation of a safe, local, long-term management solution for historic Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) in the Municipalities of Port Hope and Clarington, Ontario, Canada. Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) is the Project Proponent, Public Works and Government Services (PWGSC) is managing the procurement of services and the MMM Group Limited - Conestoga Rovers and Associates Joint Venture (MMM-CRA Joint Venture) is providing detailed design and construction oversight and administration services for the Project. The Port Hope Project includes the construction of a long-term waste management facility (LTWMF) in the Municipality of Port Hope and the remediation of 18 (eighteen) large-scale LLRW, numerous small-scale sites still being identified and industrial sites within the Municipality. The total volume to be remediated is over one million cubic metres and will come from sites that include temporary storage sites, ravines, beaches, parks, private commercial and residential properties and vacant industrial sites all within the urban area of Port Hope. Challenges that will need to be overcome during this 10 year project include: - Requirements stipulated by the Environmental Assessment (EA) that affect Project logistics and schedule. - Coordination of site remediation with the construction schedule at the LTWMF. - Physical constraints on transport routes and at sites affecting production rates. - Despite being an urban undertaking, seasonal constrains for birds and fish (i.e., nesting and spawning seasons). - Municipal considerations. - Site-specific constraints. - Site interdependencies exist requiring consideration in the schedule. Several sites require the use of an adjacent site for staging. (authors)

    Janet M Twomey, PhD

    2010-04-30

EXECUTIVE SUMARRY Wind as a source of energy has gained a significant amount of attention because it is free and green. Construction of a wind farm involves considerable investment, which includes the cost of turbines, nacelles, and towers as well as logistical costs such as transportation of oversized parts and installation costs such as crane-rental costs. The terrain effects at the project site exert considerable influence on the turbine assembly rate and the project duration, which increases the overall installation cost. For higher capacity wind turbines (>3MW), the rental cost of the cranes is significant. In this study, the impact of interest rate, sales price of electricity, terrain effects and availability of cranes on the duration of installation and payback period for the project is analyzed. Optimization of the logistic activities involved during the construction phase of a wind farm contributes to the reduction of the project duration and also increases electricity generation during the construction phase.
