GAiN: Distributed Array Computation with Python

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Scientific computing makes use of very large, multidimensional numerical arrays - typically, gigabytes to terabytes in size - much larger than can fit on even the largest single compute node. Such arrays must be distributed across a "cluster" of nodes. Global Arrays is a cluster-based software system from Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory that enables an efficient, portable, and parallel shared-memory programming interface to manipulate these arrays. Written in and for the C and FORTRAN programming languages, it takes advantage of high-performance cluster interconnections to allow any node in the cluster to access data on any other node very rapidly. The "numpy" module is the de facto standard for numerical calculation in the Python programming language, a language whose use is growing rapidly in the scientific and engineering communities. numpy provides a powerful N-dimensional array class as well as other scientific computing capabilities. However, like the majority of the core Python modules, numpy is inherently serial. Our system, GAiN (Global Arrays in NumPy), is a parallel extension to Python that accesses Global Arrays through numpy. This allows parallel processing and/or larger problem sizes to be harnessed almost transparently within new or existing numpy programs.

The limiting behavior of the Liu-Yau quasi-local energy

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The small- and large-sphere limits of the quasi-local energy recently proposed by Liu and Yau are carefully examined. It is shown that in the small-sphere limit, the non-vacuum limit of the Liu-Yau quasi-local energy approaches the expected value \\frac{4\\pi}{3} r^3 T(e_0, e_0)$. Here, T is the energy-stress tensor of matter, e_0 \\in T_p M is unit time-like and future-directed at the point p located at the center of the small sphere of radius $r$ in the limit r \\to 0. In vacuum, however, the limiting value of the Liu-Yau quasi-local energy contains the desired limit \\frac{r^5}{90} B(e_0, e_0, e_0, e_0), where B is the Bel-Robinson tensor, as well as an extra term. In the large-sphere limit at null infinity, for isolated gravitational sources, the Liu-Yau quasi-local energy is shown to recover the Bondi mass and Bondi news flux, in space-times that are asymptotically empty and flat at null infinity. The physical validity of the Liu-Yau model in view of these results is discussed.

The WEI6K, a 6-kW 7-m Small Wind Turbine: Final Technical Report

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This project was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy under a DOE solicitation Low Wind Speed Technology for Small Turbine Development. The objective of this project has been to design a new small wind turbine with improved cost, reliability and performance in grid-connected residential and small business applications, in order to achieve the overall DOE goal of cost effectiveness in Class 3 wind resources that can now be achieved in Class 5 resources. The scope of work for this project has been to complete the preliminary design of an improved small wind turbine, including preliminary loads and strength analyses; analysis and design of all major components; systems integration and structural dynamic analysis; estimation of life-cycle cost of energy; and design documentation and review. The project did not entail hardware fabrication or testing. The WEI6K Turbine resulting from this project is an upwind horizontal-axis wind turbine rated at 6 kW. It features a 3-blade 7-m diameter rotor. The generator is a direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous machine generating 3-phase power at 240 VAC. The turbine is maintained oriented in to the wind via active yaw control using electromechanical servos. Power is regulated with active blade pitch control. The turbine is presently designed to be placed on a 100-foot (30m) tower. The turbine is predicted to generate electricity at a levelized cost of energy (COE) between 7.3 and 8.9 /kWh at an IEC Class II site, with an average wind speed of 8.5 m/s at hub height, depending upon whether the customer uses a guyed truss tower (the lower figure) or a monopole tower. For the NREL Reference Site, with a mean wind speed of 5.35 m/s at 10 m height, the turbine would generate at a levelized cost of energy of between 9.7 and 11.9 /kWh. The lowest of these numbers is presently competitive with retail electricity rates in most of the country. The 8.9 /kWh is still competitive with retail rates in many regions of the country with high electricity costs. The study further concludes that several design changes could shave 10-14% from the cost of energy determined in the preliminary design. These changes include a new tower design that offers tilt-up capability without guy wires and takes better advantage of the lowered loads produced by pitch control; design a family of airfoils more appropriate for pitch regulation on a turbine of this size; tune the pitch controller properly to minimize shedding of power during turbulent operation in the transition from Region 2 to 3; value engineer the pitch system to shave costs, including consideration of a collective pitch system; and refine the design of the hub and main frame castings to minimize weight and cost. We are generally encouraged by the results. These preliminary numbers show that we can produce a turbine that is competitive with retail electric rates at relatively windy IEC Class II sites. With further improvements in the design, we believe the turbine could be competitive at sites with lesser wind resource.

Thermoelasticity of SSP Materials: An Integrated Ultrasonic and X-radiation Study

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

It has been a very productive year for accomplishing the tasks outlined in the original proposal. Quite a few crystalline materials [tantalum (Ta), molybdenum (Mo), cerium (Ce) beryllium (Be)] and amorphous materials [zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8), SiO2, and germanium diselenide (GeSe2) glasses] have been assessed at high pressures up to 12 GPa and acoustic velocities and densities have been obtained simultaneously using our unique technique. Major activities include sample preparation, high pressure cell assembly testing, and conducting ultrasonic and X-ray diffraction measurements at BNL as well as resonance ultrasonic spectroscopy (RUS) measurements at UCLA on appropriate samples. Sample preparations for Ce and Be were made at Los Alamos National Lab for which special grades and specialized machining of the sample are required. Pilot experiments for optimizing high pressure cell assemblies were conducted using the 1000-ton multi-anvil press (USCA-1000) in the High Pressure Lab at Stony Brook, and simultaneous ultrasonic and X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted using the DDIA apparatus installed at X17B2 of NSLS at BNL. New data analysis protocols have been developed for deriving density of amorphous materials at high pressure and therefore its equation of state. Following on previous years effort, attempts have been made to derive single crystal elastic constants based on the current measurements on polycrystalline samples at high pressure in conjunction with previous data as well as the current RUS measurements at ambient conditions. Single crystal elastic constants of Tantalum have been measured using RUS techniques at room pressure and high temperature. Educational and training opportunities have been provided for postdoctoral associate researchers, Drs. Wei Liu (project leader for Mo, and ZrW2O8 and SiO2 glass) and Qiong Liu (Ta project leader) and graduate students Mr. Matthew Whitaker (Project Ce and FeSi) and Sytle Antao (GeSe2 glass project). A total of 6 undergraduate students (2 summer students at Stony Brook University, and 4 undergraduates from Azusa Pacific University) participated in the experiments at various stages and benefited from the discussions about the science and research work conducted by our collaborators of the current project at DoE national labs.
