The Hanford Internal Dosimetry Program has adopted the computer code IMBA (Integrated Modules for Bioassay Analysis) as its primary code for bioassay data evaluation and dose assessment using methodologies of ICRP Publications 60, 66, 67, 68, and 78. The adoption of this code was part of the implementation plan for the June 8, 2007 amendments to 10 CFR 835. This information release includes action items unique to IMBA that were required by PNNL quality assurance standards for implementation of safety software. Copie of the IMBA software verification test plan and the outline of the briefing given to new users are also included.

MODIFICATION OF THE MOOG SPECTRAL SYNTHESIS CODES TO ACCOUNT FOR ZEEMAN BROADENING OF SPECTRAL LINES

In an attempt to widen access to the study of magnetic fields in stellar astronomy, I present MOOGStokes, a version of the MOOG one-dimensional local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer code, overhauled to incorporate a Stokes vector treatment of polarized radiation through a magnetic medium. MOOGStokes is a suite of three complementary programs, which together can synthesize the disk-averaged emergent spectrum of a star with a magnetic field. The first element (a pre-processing script called CounterPoint) calculates for a given magnetic field strength, wavelength shifts, and polarizations for the components of Zeeman-sensitive lines. The second element (a MOOG driver called SynStokes derived from the existing MOOG driver Synth) uses the list of Zeeman-shifted absorption lines together with the existing machinery of MOOG to synthesize the emergent spectrum at numerous locations across the stellar disk, accounting for stellar and magnetic field geometry. The third and final element (a post-processing script called DiskoBall) calculates the disk-averaged spectrum by weighting the individual emergent spectra by limb darkening and projected area, and applying the effects of Doppler broadening. All together, the MOOGStokes package allows users to synthesize emergent spectra of stars with magnetic fields in a familiar computational framework. MOOGStokes produces disk-averaged spectra for all Stokes vectors ( I, Q, U, V ), normalized by the continuum. MOOGStokes agrees well with the predictions of INVERS10 a polarized radiative transfer code with a long history of use in the study of stellar magnetic fields. In the non-magnetic limit, MOOGStokes also agrees with the predictions of the scalar version of MOOG.

A computational tool is described that can be used for designing magnetic focusing or defocusing systems. A fully three-dimensional classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulation has been developed. Ion trajectories are simulated in the presence of magnetic elements that can be modeled as any combination of current loops and current lines. Each current loop or line may be located anywhere in the system and oriented along any of the three coordinate axes. The configuration need not be axisymmetric. The solutions are obtained using normalized parameters, which can be used for easily scaling the results. Examples are provided of the utility of the code.

While the methodology used in developing test items can vary significantly, to ensure quality examinations, test items should be developed systematically. Test design and development is discussed in the DOE Guide to Good Practices for Design, Development, and Implementation of Examinations. This guide is intended to be a supplement by providing more detailed guidance on the development of specific test items. This guide addresses the development of written examination test items primarily. However, many of the concepts also apply to oral examinations, both in the classroom and on the job. This guide is intended to be used as guidance for the classroom and laboratory instructor or curriculum developer responsible for the construction of individual test items. This document focuses on written test items, but includes information relative to open-reference (open book) examination test items, as well. These test items have been categorized as short-answer, multiple-choice, or essay. Each test item format is described, examples are provided, and a procedure for development is included. The appendices provide examples for writing test items, a test item development form, and examples of various test item formats.

Binary classification of items of interest in a repeatable process

A system includes host and learning machines in electrical communication with sensors positioned with respect to an item of interest, e.g., a weld, and memory. The host executes instructions from memory to predict a binary quality status of the item. The learning machine receives signals from the sensor(s), identifies candidate features, and extracts features from the candidates that are more predictive of the binary quality status relative to other candidate features. The learning machine maps the extracted features to a dimensional space that includes most of the items from a passing binary class and excludes all or most of the items from a failing binary class. The host also compares the received signals for a subsequent item of interest to the dimensional space to thereby predict, in real time, the binary quality status of the subsequent item of interest.

The possibil- ity to realize a multidimensional bar code symbology is proposed as an option for a new labeling method. The results of the first tests and evaluations of this are shown and discussed in the paper. The invention is suitable for use in items assigned to long-term (hundreds of years) storing or for final repositories. Alternative field of use includes fresh nuclear fuel handling and shipment of goods.

Doubles counting of highly multiplying items in reflective surroundings

When a neutrons are counted from a spontaneously fissile multiplying item in a reflecting environment the temporal behavior of the correlated signal following neutron birth is complex. At early times the signal is dominated by prompt fission events coming from spontaneous fission bursts and also from prompt fast-neutron induced fission events. At later times neutrons 'returning' from the surroundings induce fission and give rise to an additional chain of correlated events. The prompt and returning components probe the fissile and fertile constituents of the item in different ways and it is potentially beneficial to exploit this fact. In this work we look at how the two components can be represented using a linear combination of two simple functions. Fitting of the composite function to the capture time distribution represents one way of quantifying the proportion of each contribution. Another approach however is to use a dual shift register analysis where after each triggering event two coincidence gates are opened, one close to the trigger that responds preferentially to the prompt dynamics and one later in time which is more sensitive to the returning neutron induced events. To decide on the best gate positions and gate widths and also to estimate the counting precision we can use the analytical fit to work out the necessary gate utilization factors which are required in both these calculations. In this work, we develop the approach. Illustrative examples are given using spent Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) Pressurized light Water Reactor (LWR) fuel assemblies submersed in borated water and counted in a ring of {sup 3}He gas-filled proportional counters. In this case the prompt component is dominated by {sup 244}Cm spontaneous fission and induced fast neutron fission in for example {sup 238}U while the returning low energy neutrons induce fission mainly in the fissile nuclides such as {sup 239}Pu, {sup 241}Pu and {sup 235}U. One requirement is to calculate the Random Triggered Interrogation Gate Utilization Factor needed to make a priori precision estimates but not available from Monte Carlo simulation code MCNPX.

Multi-parameter on-line coal bulk analysis

This was a four-year grant that was given a no cost extension for one more year. The purpose of the grant was to develop a pulsed neutron-based technique that could measure on-line all the major and minor elements in coal. Such measurements would allow the continuous monitoring of bulk parameters such as coal heating value (BTU/lb), volatile matter, moisture etc., deemed important to the coal industry. Such parameters, along with the continuous measurement of elements such as sulfur and sodium, are of major economic and environmental concern, and their measurement would assist in a more efficient use of the coal-fired boilers, as well as limiting emissions controlled by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. It was hoped that this study would lead to the development of a technique able to create a marketable product, an On-Line Elemental Coal Analyzer. The study was separated in the following major parts: (1) Devise an efficient system for the detection of gamma rays; (2) Prior to experimentation, perform modeling and simulations for items such as detector shielding, coal sample configuration, and neutron tube collimation; (3) Develop a computer code for data reduction and analysis; (4) Measure the elemental composition of various coal samples; and (5) Design a prototype, on-line elemental coal analyzer, based on the PFTNA principle.

It can simulate as pulse-to-pulse feedback on timescale corresponding to 5-100 Hz, as slower feedbacks, operating in the 0.1-1 Hz range in the Main Linac and Beam Delivery System. The code LFSC is running under Matlab for MS Windows operating system. It contains about 30,000 lines of source code in more than 260 subroutines. The code uses the LIAR ('Linear Accelerator Research code') for particle tracking under ground motion and technical noise perturbations. It uses the Guinea Pig code to simulate the luminosity performance. A set of input files includes the lattice description (XSIF format), and plane text files with numerical parameters, wake fields, ground motion data etc. The Matlab environment provides a flexible system for graphical output.

Counterfeiting of industrial and commercial grade items is an international problem that places worker safety, program objectives, expensive equipment, and security at risk. In order to prevent the introduction of Suspect/Counterfeit Items (S/CI), this information sheet is being made available as a guide to assist in the implementation of S/CI awareness and controls, in conjunction with subcontractor's/supplier's quality assurance programs. When it comes to counterfeit goods, including industrial materials, items, and equipment, no market is immune. Some manufactures have been known to misrepresent their products and intentionally use inferior materials and processes to manufacture substandard items, whose properties can significantly cart from established standards and specifications. These substandard items termed by the Department of Energy (DOE) as S/CI, pose immediate and potential threats to the safety of DOE and contractor workers, the public, and the environment. Failure of certain systems and processes caused by an S/CI could also have national security implications at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Nuclear Safety Rules (federal Laws), DOE Orders, and other regulations set forth requirements for DOE contractors to implement effective controls to assure that items and services meet specified requirements. This includes techniques to implement and thereby minimizing the potential threat of entry of S/CI to LANL. As a qualified supplier of goods or services to the LANL, your company will be required to establish and maintain effective controls to prevent the introduction of S/CI to LANL. This will require that your company warrant that all items (including their subassemblies, components, and parts) sold to LANL are genuine (i.e. not counterfeit), new, and unused, and conform to the requirements of the LANL purchase orders/contracts unless otherwise approved in writing to the Los Alamos National Security (LANS) contract administrator/procurements specialist.

Research finds that a significant portion of data collected on EIA’s primary monthly natural gas consumption survey reflects billing data that does not strictly coincide with the actual calendar month, which creates an aggregate-level discrepancy with EIA’s other natural gas supply and disposition data series. This discrepancy is especially observable during the fall and spring as one transitions into and out of the winter heating season. The report also outlines improved data collection and estimation procedures that will be implemented later this year to more closely align reported and actual calendar month consumption. A new class of mechanical code comparators is described which have broad potential for application in safety, surety, and security applications. These devices can be implemented as micro-scale electromechanical systems that isolate a secure or otherwise controlled device until an access code is entered. This access code is converted into a series of mechanical inputs to the mechanical code comparator, which compares the access code to a pre-input combination, entered previously into the mechanical code comparator by an operator at the system security control point. These devices provide extremely high levels of robust security. Being totally mechanical in operation, an access control system properly based on such devices cannot be circumvented by software attack alone.

The FEDC Tokamak Systems Code calculates tokamak performance, cost, and configuration as a function of plasma engineering parameters. This version of the code models experimental tokamaks. It does not currently consider tokamak configurations that generate electrical power or incorporate breeding blankets. The code has a modular (or subroutine) structure to allow independent modeling for each major tokamak component or system. 6 6 Residential Building Code Compliance: Recent Findings and Implications Energy use in residential buildings in the U.S. is significant-about 20% of primary energy use. While several approaches reduce energy use such as appliance standards and utility programs, enforcing state building energy codes is one of the most promising. However, one of the challenges is to understand the rate of compliance within the building community. Utility companies typically use these codes as the baseline for providing incentives to builders participating in utility-sponsored residential new construction (RNC) programs. However, because builders may construct homes that fail to meet energy codes, energy use in the actual baseline is higher than would be expected if all buildings complied with the code. Also,

Compiling Codes Compiling Codes Compiling Codes on Hopper Overview Cray provides a convenient set of wrapper commands that should be used in almost all cases for compiling and linking parallel programs. Invoking the wrappers will automatically link codes with MPI libraries and other Cray system software. All MPI and Cray system include directories are also transparently imported. In addition the wrappers append the compiler's target processor arguments for the hopper compute node processors. NOTE: The intention is that programs are compiled on the login nodes and executed on the compute nodes. Because the compute nodes and login nodes have different operating systems, binaries created for compute nodes may not run on the login node. The wrappers mentioned above guarantee that

This is a report on the CSNI Workshop on Transient Thermal-Hydraulic and Neutronic Codes Requirements held at Annapolis, Maryland, USA November 5-8, 1996. This experts` meeting consisted of 140 participants from 21 countries; 65 invited papers were presented. The meeting was divided into five areas: (1) current and prospective plans of thermal hydraulic codes development; (2) current and anticipated uses of thermal-hydraulic codes; (3) advances in modeling of thermal-hydraulic phenomena and associated additional experimental needs; (4) numerical methods in multi-phase flows; and (5) programming language, code architectures and user interfaces. The workshop consensus identified the following important action items to be addressed by the international community in order to maintain and improve the calculational capability: (a) preserve current code expertise and institutional memory, (b) preserve the ability to use the existing investment in plant transient analysis codes, (c) maintain essential experimental capabilities, (d) develop advanced measurement capabilities to support future code validation work, (e) integrate existing analytical capabilities so as to improve performance and reduce operating costs, (f) exploit the proven advances in code architecture, numerics, graphical user interfaces, and modularization in order to improve code performance and scrutibility, and (g) more effectively utilize user experience in modifying and improving the codes.

Nested Quantum Error Correction Codes

The theory of quantum error correction was established more than a decade ago as the primary tool for fighting decoherence in quantum information processing. Although great progress has already been made in this field, limited methods are available in constructing new quantum error correction codes from old codes. Here we exhibit a simple and general method to construct new quantum error correction codes by nesting certain quantum codes together. The problem of finding long quantum error correction codes is reduced to that of searching several short length quantum codes with certain properties. Our method works for all length and all distance codes, and is quite efficient to construct optimal or near optimal codes. Two main known methods in constructing new codes from old codes in quantum error-correction theory, the concatenating and pasting, can be understood in the framework of nested quantum error correction codes.

BECP supports successful compliance by making no-cost compliance tools, REScheck(tm) and COMcheck(tm), and other resources widely available to everyone. BECP has also developed several resources to help states uniformly assess the rate of compliance with their energy codes for residential and commercial buildings. It is important to note that regardless of the level of enforcement, as a law the building owner/developer is ultimately responsible to comply with the energy code. Compliance will be increased if the adopting agency prepares the building construction community to comply with the energy code and provides resources to code officials to enforce it.

Implementing New Methods of Laser Marking of Items in the Nuclear Material Control and Accountability System at SSC RF-IPPE: An Automated Laser Marking System

For over ten years SSC RF-IPPE, together with the US DOE National Laboratories, has been working on implementing automated control and accountability methods for nuclear materials and other items. Initial efforts to use adhesive bar codes or ones printed (painted) onto metal revealed that these methods were inconvenient and lacked durability under operational conditions. For NM disk applications in critical stands, there is the additional requirement that labels not affect the neutron characteristics of the critical assembly. This is particularly true for the many stainless-steel clad disks containing highly enriched uranium (HEU) and plutonium that are used at SSC RF-IPPE for modeling nuclear power reactors. In search of an alternate method for labeling these disks, we tested several technological options, including laser marking and two-dimensional codes. As a result, the method of laser coloring was chosen in combination with Data Matrix ECC200 symbology. To implement laser marking procedures for the HEU disks and meet all the nuclear material (NM) handling standards and rules, IPPE staff, with U.S. technical and financial support, implemented an automated laser marking system; there are also specially developed procedures for NM movements during laser marking. For the laser marking station, a Zenith 10F system by Telesis Technologies (10 watt Ytterbium Fiber Laser and Merlin software) is used. The presentation includes a flowchart for the automated system and a list of specially developed procedures with comments. Among other things, approaches are discussed for human-factor considerations. To date, markings have been applied to numerous steel-clad HEU disks, and the work continues. In the future this method is expected to be applied to other MC&A items.

The Western genre, that is frontier adventure stories set west of the Mississippi River, has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity, yet there has been no substantive look at the collection of Western genre novels and films in libraries. The online catalogs of 100 libraries across the United States were examined, and a follow-up questionnaire was sent, to determine the scope of Western genre item holdings and the institutional attitudes towards this genre. This study found that Western genre items are still well represented in most collections. However, it also revealed weaknesses in the way genre collection development is conducted.

The Landaude Gennes model for nematic liquid crystal bulk and interfaces has been extended to nematic triple lines involving the intersection of two isotropic fluids and one nematic liquid crystalline phase. A complete set of bulk, interface, and triple line force and torque balance equations has been formulated. The triple line force and torque balance equations have linear, interfacial, and bulk contributions. The bulk contributions appear as junction integrals, the surface contributions as junctions sums, and the line contributions as gradients of stresses. Reduction of dimensionality from three to one dimensional creates the following effects: (a) bulk terms enter interfacial balances as surface jumps and line balances as junction integrals, and (b) surface terms enter linear balances as junction sums. Line stress and torque equations are derived using classical liquid crystal models. The correspondence between line stress and line torque and their surface and bulk analogs is established. The triple line force and torque balance equations are use to analyze the contact angle in a nematic lens lying at the interface between two isotropic fluids, when the prefered surface orientation is tangential. The effect of anisotropy and long range elasticity on triple line phases is established. Under weak anchoring the contact angle is shown to be a function of the anchoring energy at the nematic-isotropic interface, while under strong anchoring conditions the contact angle is a function of the Peach-Koehler force that originates from bulk long range elasticity and acts on the triple line. The use of the complete set of balance equations removes the classical inconsistency in force balances at a contact line by properly taking into account long range (bulk gradient elasticity) and anisotropic (interfacial anchoring elasticity) effects.

Abstract Audio Coding has proliferated as a mainstream enabling digital technology for all types of applications that provide audio and multimedia to consumers using transmission or storage channels with limited capacity. Since its infancies in the eighties and early nineties, the technology behind low bitrate audio coding has developed rapidly until today. Nonetheless, the technology generations seen to date follow several common themes, including the use of time/frequency-domain processing, redundancy reduction (entropy coding), and irrelevancy removal through the pronounced exploitation of perceptual effects. The latter aspect is of paramount importance to the understanding and the performance of the coding systems and has gained more and more in importance over time. Starting from basic principles, this article provides an overview of methods for low bitrate perceptual audio coding and its evolution over time along with some related coding standards (e.g., mp3) and typical applications.

Repeatability of measurements of residential magnetic fields and wire codes

Several epidemiological studies have been based on wire codes (i.e., categories of electrical wiring configurations near residences) or on in-home spot measurements of magnetic flux density (MFD) as surrogates for short- and long-term exposure of children and adults to residential magnetic fields. We used wire code and MFD measurements that were made in 81 Colorado homes in 1985 and again in 1990 to assess their repeatability over periods of 0-24 h and 5 years. These homes, a subset of those lived in by subjects from the case-control study of Savitz et al. [Am J Epidemiol 128:21-38, 1988], were divided into four approximately equally sized groups that were differentiated by wire code and by case-control status. Eight homes were assigned wire codes in 1990 that differed from the 1985 coding of Savitz and colleagues [1988]; of these, seven were coded as high-current configuration (HCC) and one as low-current configuration (LCC) in 1985. Overall, 37 homes were coded as HCC in 1990 compared with 38 homes in 1985. Coding differences were due to differing distance measurements (four homes), differing thick vs. thin categorization of primary-distribution line-conductor sizes (two homes), differing first-span vs. second-span categorization of secondary wires (one home), and physical changes in proximate electrical wiring (one home). Coefficients of correlation between MFD spot measurements that were separated in time by 0-24 h range between 0.70 and 0.90. The coefficient between spot measurements made in 1985 and then again in 1990 is 0.70. These coefficients are similar for HCC and LCC homes and do not depend on whether residential appliances were turned on or off. The data show (at least for the portion of Colorado studied) that residential wire code and, more surprisingly, spot MFD measurements, are fairly reliable over 0-24-h and 5-year periods.

In connection with the study of shear-free null geodesics in Minkowski space, we investigate the real geometric effects in real Minkowski space that are induced by and associated with complex world-lines in complex Minkowski space. It was already known, in a formal manner, that complex analytic curves in complex Minkowski space induce shear-free null geodesic congruences. Here we look at the direct geometric connections of the complex line and the real structures. Among other items, we show, in particular, how a complex world-line projects into the real Minkowski space in the form of a real shear-free null geodesic congruence.

SEAMOPT - Stirling engine optimization code

Experience is described with use of a fast-running Stirling engine optimization code developed at Argonne intended for public release. Stirling engine modeling is provided by the SEAM1 thermodynamic code. An interface was written to combine SEAM1 with a general optimization code and assess maximum component stress levels. Thus full engine thermodynamic and structural simulation is done during the optimization process. Several examples of the use of this code to optimize the GPU-3 engine are described. In one case efficiency was improved by over 25%.

The International Code Council (ICC) published the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code{reg_sign} (IECC) in early 2012. The 2012 IECC is based on revisions, additions, and deletions to the 2009 IECC that were considered during the ICC code development process conducted in 2011. Solid vertical lines, arrows, or asterisks printed in the 2012 IECC indicate where revisions, deletions, or relocations of text respectively were made to 2009 IECC. Although these marginal markings indicate where changes have been made to the code, they do not provide any further guidance, leaving the reader to consult and compare the 2009 and 2012 IECC for more detail.

The relative simplicity and design of the Fortran 77 language allowed for reasonable interoperability with C and C++. Fortran 90, on the other hand, introduces several new and complex features to the language that severely degrade the ability of a mixed Fortran and C++ development environment. Major new items added to Fortran are user-defined types, pointers, and several new array features. Each of these items introduce difficulties because the Fortran 90 procedure calling convention was not designed with interoperability as an important design goal. For example, Fortran 90 arrays are passed by array descriptor, which is not specified by the language and therefore depends on a particular compiler implementation. This paper describes a set of software tools that parses Fortran 90 source code and produces mediating interface functions which allow access to Fortran 90 libraries from C++.

Accomplishments and objectives of the PNC codes and standards working group

This paper describes the activities of the Pacific Nuclear Council Codes and Standards Working Group during the past several years, and discuss its objectives. The Working Group has met regularly since 1985 to discuss ways to implement the following mission statement: [open quotes]To encourage the use of reasonably consistent criteria for the design, fabrication, construction, testing, operations and maintenance of hardware components, systems, subsystems and structures for the commercial nuclear power plants in the Pacific Basin so as to: Promote comparable safety standards; Encourage commerce among PBNCC member countries; Reduce the costs of fabrication, construction, testing, operation and maintenance; and, Facilitate the sharing of spare parts inventories[close quotes]. During the first few meetings it became apparent that further clarification of the mission statement was necessary to recognize the point that each member country has their own codes and standards and that uniformity of these codes and standards was not the objective of the working group. The objective is more oriented toward achieving a mutual understanding of the codes and standards used in each country so that purchase of items from other countries or sharing spare parts could be accomplished more efficiently. In addition, this prior knowledge of the codes and standards to which components were fabricated could be useful if a problem with a component developed in one country and assistance in solving the problem were to be provided by another country. Evaluation of the differences in codes and standards used by other countries also provides an opportunity to consider other opinions.

Enhancing Electron Photoemission with Nanopillar Array Enhancing Electron Photoemission with Nanopillar Array Figures: An array of nano-sized gold pillars, (a), creates a plasmonic surface resonance. (B), photoelectron kinetic energy spectrum for electrons ejected from the nanopillar array, showing significant increases compared to a flat gold surface. Working with the Molecular Foundry's Bruce Harteneck, researchers in the Lab's Ultrafast Materials and Chemical Sciences programs have verified and measured a boost in photoemitted-electron energies when assisted by the plasmonic field of a gold nanopillar array. Such enhancement provides a way to investigate plasmon dynamics, important for possible coupling to active electronics. Groups of electrons on a metal surface can oscillate coherently, a phenomenon known as a surface plasmon resonance. When excited by ultrafast

This is a two-phase system where aqueous droplets containing cells are produced and transported in inert carrier oil. Droplets are anchored into an array by the reduction in their surface energy as they enter into microfabricated depressions. Thus, microdroplets are anchored and arranged in a 2-dimensional array against the flow of the carrier oil. This is the longest cycle life reported so far for any lithium-sulfur battery. Demand for high-performance batteries for electric and hybrid electric vehicles capable of matching the range and power of the combustion engine encourages scientists to develop new battery chemistries that could deliver more power and energy than lithium-ion batteries, currently the best

Porous Semiconducting Films Tailored for Future Energy Storage and Porous Semiconducting Films Tailored for Future Energy Storage and Conversion Devices Mesoporous films switch composition from CdSe to PbSe, Cu2Se, and Ag2Se through cation exchange: The architecture of these porous films remained intact and the chemical transformations were demonstrated to be reversible. This robustness is promising for various applications as it suggests that electronic and mechanical properties can be maintained through multiple processing and transformation stages. Scientific Achievement Molecular Foundry researchers have developed a method to create and control mesoporous architecture in metal chalcogenides (a class of semiconductors used in light- and energy-harvesting devices) that was maintained during reversible chemical transformations.

He performed both his undergraduate and Ph.D. work at UC Santa Cruz under Professor Jin Z. Zhang in Physical Chemistry. While at Santa Cruz, he also worked at Lawrence Livermore National Labs as a graduate research fellow under Professor Thomas Huser. In graduate school, his work focused on metal nanoparticle synthesis and the application of metal nanoparticles, including surface enhanced Raman for sensing, and ultrafast electron dynamics. He received two postdoctoral research fellowships, first with Professor Stephen R. Leone at UC Berkeley, then with Dr. Jeff Urban of the Molecular. Both of these positions involved the

The Molecular Foundry's Delia Milliron and colleagues have employed a powerful combinatorial approach to synthesize nanocrystals that glow in bright, pure colors when excited with near infrared light. - a process known as upconversion. These nanocrystals may allow for biological imaging with less harmful radiation than current methods, and can be more easily tracked and quantified due to their single color emission. Milliron's team used a wide-sweeping approach to identify promising lanthanide ion combinations, using the automatic synthesis robot, WANDA, able to perform 96 different reactions in parallel. A Spectral Verification of the HELIOS-2 Lattice Physics Code

Core modeling of the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at INL is currently undergoing a significant update through the Core Modeling Update Project1. The intent of the project is to bring ATR core modeling in line with todays standard of computational efficiency and verification and validation practices. The HELIOS-2 lattice physics code2 is the lead code of several reactor physics codes to be dedicated to modernize ATR core analysis. This presentation is concerned with an independent verification of the HELIOS-2 spectral representation including the slowing down and thermalization algorithm and its data dependency. Here, we will describe and demonstrate a recently developed simple cross section generation algorithm based entirely on analytical multigroup parameters for both the slowing down and thermal spectrum. The new capability features fine group detail to assess the flux and multiplication factor dependencies on cross section data sets using the fundamental infinite medium as an example.
