A Remark of the Sanders-Wang's Theorem on Symmetry-integrability

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We extend the integrability analysis for scalar evolution equations of type $$u_t=u_m+f(u,u_1,...,u_{m-1})$$ from the case that the right hand side is a $\\lambda$-homogeneous formal power series to the case that it is a nonhomogeneous formal power series. It is proved that the existence of one nontrivial symmetry implies the existence of infinitely many, more precisely, the orders of the infinite integrable hierarchy must be one of the following cases: $\\mathbb{Z}_++1$, $2\\mathbb{Z}_++1$, $6\\mathbb{Z}_+\\pm1$, or $6\\mathbb{Z}_++1$. Moreover, if the nonlinear part of the equation is a polynomial of order less than $m-1$, we show that any generalized symmetry is also of polynomial type.

Chapter 6 - The Circuitous Journey from Malonamides to BTPhens: Ligands for Separating Actinides from Lanthanides

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract This account describes the scientific events that have led from malonamides which coextract minor actinide and lanthanide fission products, to the 1,2,4-triazines such as BTBP and \\{BTPhen\\} reagents that are capable of separating Am(III) from Eu(III). The journey started with Mike Hudson having a walk in hot and dusty Rome with Claude Musikas of the CEA in 1980 and continues to Mike enjoying a celebratory beer (or two) in Reading (2012) with Laurence Harwood and Frank Lewis. Throughout the journey, organic synthesis, coupled with coordination chemistry, has been the engine by which successful science has developed.

Kalkstein Date: March 5, 2013 - 11:30am Location: 90-3122 Seminar Host/Point of Contact: Ronnen Levinson Human response to climate consists of physiological and behavioral reactions to extreme events, but in many climate/health analyses, the identification of these events is poorly expressed. For example, most studies rely on some combination of temperature and humidity to identify extreme heat events, but there is a much larger dimension to understand how these episodes could lead to human stress. This presentation will review a suggested approach to identify particularly dangerous heat episodes, and it will link these events to negative human health outcomes in urban areas.

Environmentally-conscious product stewardship at The Boeing Company

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Environmentally-conscious product stewardship involves attempts to limit the impact of products on the environment. Early stewardship efforts within facilities (i.e., end of the pipe reduction) have given way to broader concepts of limiting environmental impact and extending efforts beyond the facility walls. The implementation of stewardship at The Boeing Company differs from that which might typically be found in a consumer products company. As Laurence Weinberg reveals in this article, this difference stems from the nature of Boeing as a company, the characteristics of its customers, the attributes of its products, and the areas of environmental concern associated with the life cycle of these products. At Boeing, stewardship is diffused throughout the company rather than being the responsibility of one organization.

Student's Story Student's Story At Brookhaven National Laboratory, we have many opportunities for interaction with students and the public. An unusual opportunity arose in the summer of 1995. A high school student, Erica Sanders, wrote to the Lab asking for a chance to do research. Her exceptional resume indicated that she had completed calculus as a sophomore and possessed a strong interest in science. We interviewed her and found her quite poised and interested. Her first project involved analyzing test beam data from the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeter, destined for use at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. She learned the tools of the particle physicists' trade: Unix, PAW, tex, etc. But Erica wanted to have a project of her own. We eventually selected development of Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) for medical imaging. (We used

An Investigation of the effect of graphite degradation on irreversible An Investigation of the effect of graphite degradation on irreversible capacity in lithium-ion cells. Title An Investigation of the effect of graphite degradation on irreversible capacity in lithium-ion cells. Publication Type Journal Article Year of Publication 2008 Authors Hardwick, Laurence J., Marek Marcinek, Leanne Beer, John B. Kerr, and Robert Kostecki Journal Electrochemical Society Volume 155 Start Page A442 Issue 6 Pagination A442-A447 Keywords chromatography, electrochemical electrodes, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Fourier transform spectra, graphite, infrared spectra, lithium, mass spectra, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy, secondary cells, sputtering, surface structure Abstract The effect of surface structural damage on graphitic anodes, commonly observed in tested Li-ion cells, was investigated. Similar surface structural disorder was artificially induced in Mag-10 synthetic graphite anodes using argon-ion sputtering. Raman microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements confirmed that Ar-ion sputtered Mag-10 electrodes display a similar degree of surface degradation as the anodes from tested Li-ion cells. Artificially modified Mag-10 anodes showed double the irreversible charge capacity during the first formation cycle compared to fresh unaltered anodes. Impedance spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy on surface-modified graphite anodes indicated the formation of a thicker and slightly more resistive solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy analysis of solvent extracts from the electrodes detected the presence of new compounds with Mw on the order of 1600gmol-1 for the surface-modified electrode with no evidence of elevated Mw species for the unmodified electrode. The structural disorder induced in the graphite during long-term cycling may be responsible for the slow and continuous SEI layer reformation, and consequently, the loss of reversible capacity due to the shift of lithium inventory in cycled Li-ion cells.

Dynamical separation of spherical bodies in supersonic flow

SciTech Connect

An experimental and computational investigation of the unsteady separation behaviour of two spheres in a highly supersonic flow is carried out. The spherical bodies, initially touching, are released with negligible relative velocity, an arrangement representing the idealized binary fragmentation of a meteoritic body in the atmosphere. In experiments performed in a Mach-4 Ludwieg tube, nylon spheres are initially suspended in the test section by weak threads and, following detachment of the threads by the arrival of the flow, fly freely according to the aerodynamic forces experienced. The resulting sphere motions and unsteady flow structures are recorded using high-speed shadowgraphy. The qualitative separation behaviour and the final lateral velocity of the smaller sphere are found to vary strongly with both the radius ratio and the initial alignment angle of the two spheres. More disparate radii and initial configurations in which the smaller sphere centre lies downstream of that of the larger sphere both increase the tendency for the smaller sphere to be entrained within the flow region bounded by the bow-shock of the larger body, rather than expelled from this region. At a critical angle for a given radius ratio (or a critical radius ratio for a given angle), transition from entrainment to expulsion occurs; at this critical value, the final lateral velocity is close to maximum due to the surfing effect noted by Laurence & Deiterding (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 676, 2011, pp. 396-431) at hypersonic Mach numbers. A high-precision tracking algorithm is used to provide quantitative comparisons between experiments and high-resolution inviscid numerical simulations, with generally favourable agreement.

Integrated Framework toward a Closed Loop Measurement and Verification Integrated Framework toward a Closed Loop Measurement and Verification Approach Title Integrated Framework toward a Closed Loop Measurement and Verification Approach Publication Type Conference Proceedings Year of Publication 2011 Authors Earni, Shankar, Philip Coleman, and Mark D. Sanders Conference Name ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry Volume 1 Pagination 68-79 Date Published 1/2011 Abstract This study reviews a sample set of measurement and verification (M&V) plans from federal ESPC projects to understand and assess the overall status of M&V practices. The review identifies some of the key issues that need to be addressed to improve the rigor and transparency of M&V practices. To mitigate some of the identified M&V issues, this work also reviews existing M&V protocols, guidelines and other pertinent literature to identify strategies that can augment traditional M&V approaches. The authors provide a framework to identify ways to integrate M&V and commissioning activities into the ESPC process, combining M&V activities and advanced meter data into a monitoring-based commissioning approach that reduces the uncertainty of savings while ensuring their persistence.

Application of stochastic weighted algorithms to a multidimensional silica particle model

SciTech Connect

Highlights: Stochastic weighted algorithms (SWAs) are developed for a detailed silica model. An implementation of SWAs with the transition kernel is presented. The SWAs solutions converge to the direct simulation algorithms (DSA) solution. The efficiency of SWAs is evaluated for this multidimensional particle model. It is shown that SWAs can be used for coagulation problems in industrial systems. -- Abstract: This paper presents a detailed study of the numerical behaviour of stochastic weighted algorithms (SWAs) using the transition regime coagulation kernel and a multidimensional silica particle model. The implementation in the SWAs of the transition regime coagulation kernel and associated majorant rates is described. The silica particle model of Shekar et al. [S. Shekar, A.J. Smith, W.J. Menz, M. Sander, M. Kraft, A multidimensional population balance model to describe the aerosol synthesis of silica nanoparticles, Journal of Aerosol Science 44 (2012) 8398] was used in conjunction with this coagulation kernel to study the convergence properties of SWAs with a multidimensional particle model. High precision solutions were calculated with two SWAs and also with the established direct simulation algorithm. These solutions, which were generated using large number of computational particles, showed close agreement. It was thus demonstrated that SWAs can be successfully used with complex coagulation kernels and high dimensional particle models to simulate real-world systems.

Testing recognition of computer?generated speech with elementary school children

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Recently two experiments were performed on recognition of computer?generated speech. One experiment tested recognition of letter sounds by first graders the other tested fifth graders' recognition of consonant sounds in monosyllabic words. The systems tested were the Allen/Klatt system [J. Allen 1977 IEEE Int. Conf. ASSP p. 579 (1977)] the Votrax VS6 and ML1 systems (all phoneme synthesizers) and the institute's MISS system (linear predictive compression of recorded speech) [Sanders and Laddaga J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 60 Suppl. 1 S76(A) (1976)]. Human speech was used as a control. A sign test was used to rank the systems; in both experiments the ordering was human speech MISS Allen/Klatt Votrax. The pairwise comparisons were significant at less than the 1% level except for three cases involving the control MISS and Allen/Klatt. A learning study was done for the letter experiment using linear probability models whose results corroborated the ranking determined from the sign test. Study was made of individual problem sounds for each system in terms of human vocal parameters. [Supported by NSF grant SED74?15016?A02.

Modeling shallow?water propagation with an appropriate sea?surface roughness spectrum

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Predictions for shallow?water acoustic propagation are usually accomplished assuming a deep?water spectrum for the sea surface roughness. In addition the effect of surface roughness is normally included through a loss mechanism. However for waveguide propagation the surface roughness mainly causes a redistribution of energy and therefore the use of an accurate model to handle roughness is essential to obtaining accurate results. In order to properly model shallow?water surface roughness the parametric spectrum GONO [Sanders and Bruinsma Wave Dynamics and Radio Probing of the Ocean Surface edited by O. M. Phillips and K. Hassemann (Plenum New York 1986) pp. 615637] has been implemented. This spectrum is appropriate for wind?driven surfaces in waters ranging in depth from 15 to 100 m. To investigate the impact that different spectra has on the propagating field predictions using GONO and PiersonMoskowitz spectra are compared for different environments and at frequencies typical of active and passive sonars. An acoustic propagationmodel which includes a conformal mapping algorithm to properly handle sea surface roughness [Norton et al. J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 97 21732180 (1995)] is used to generate the numerical results. [Work supported by ONR.

Energy content of young yellow perch and walleye in Saginaw Bay

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract We evaluated seasonal energy content of age-0 yellow perch Perca flavescens and walleye Sander vitreus in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron in 2009 and 2010. We also determined the energy content of age-1 fish from the 2009 and 2010 cohorts the following spring (i.e., for fish that had survived one winter) to evaluate overwinter energy losses. As expected, larger fish within each species had disproportionately higher energy content (i.e., slope relating length and energy >3.0) than smaller conspecifics. By contrast to expectations, allometric slopes were >3.0 in nearly all months, not just the fall, and were higher for age-0 yellow perch than for walleye, even though increased allocation to growth would have seemingly been beneficial to even the largest yellow perch during summer. Seasonal energy allocation patterns differed between years. In 2009, length specific energy content increased from late summer to fall for both species. However, for the 2010 cohorts of fish, length specific energy content decreased between late summer and fall for yellow perch and did not change for walleye. There were 1317% overwinter declines in length specific energy content between the fall (October or November) and the spring (May) with no major differences between cohorts within a species or between species for a given year. Because young yellow perch and walleye are similar physiologically but differ in size (i.e., yellow perch are smaller), it is possible that overwinter energy losses are more important for yellow perch than for walleye.

Electrochemical Society Volume 156 Issue 2 Pagination A120-A127 Keywords electrochemical electrodes, Fourier transform spectra, infrared spectra, lithium compounds, manganese compounds, Raman spectra, titanium compounds Abstract This work demonstrates the protective effect of partial titanium substitution in LixTi0.11Mn0.89O2 against surface decomposition in room-temperature ionic liquid (RTILs) cells. Raman microscopy and reflectance Fourier transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to analyze electrodes recovered from cycled Li/LixTiyMn1-yO2 (y=0,0.11) cells containing the 0.5mol/kg LiTFSI in P13FSI RTIL electrolyte. [TFSI=bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide .] Raman and FTIR spectra of cycled LixMnO2 cathodes showed many distinct bands that can be attributed to both the electrolyte and electrode decomposition products. The thickness of the amorphous porous layer on the LixMnO2 cathode increased during cycling. The surface degradation of LixMnO2 and precipitation of electrolyte decomposition products contributed to the film growth. Improved cycling behavior was observed in cells containing LixTi0.11Mn0.89O2 , yet Raman spectroscopy also showed possible surface degradation. The FTIR spectra of cycled LixMnO2 and LixTi0.11Mn0.89O2 cathodes displayed bands characteristic for LiSO3CF3 and Li2NSO2CF3 , which originate from the reaction of the TFSI anion with traces of water present in the cell.

Chief Joseph Kokanee Enhancement Project; Strobe Light Deterrent Efficacy Test and Fish Behavior Determination at Grand Coulee Dam Third Powerplant Forebay, 2005-2006 Annual Report.

SciTech Connect

The construction of Grand Coulee and Chief Joseph dams on the Columbia River resulted in the complete extirpation of the anadromous fishery upstream of these structures. Today, this area is totally dependent upon resident fish resources to support local fisheries. The resident fishing is enhanced by an extensive stocking program for target species in the existing fishery, including kokanee (Oncorhynchus nerka kennerlyi) and rainbow trout (O. mykiss). The kokanee fishery in Lake Roosevelt has not been meeting the return goals set by fisheries managers despite the stocking program. Investigations of physical and biological factors that could affect the kokanee population found predation and entrainment had a significant impact on the fish population. In 1999 and 2000, walleye (Sander vitreum) consumed between 15% and 9%, respectively, of the hatchery kokanee within 41 days of their release, while results from a study in the late 1990s estimated that entrainment at Grand Coulee Dam could account for up to 30% of the total mortality of the stocked fish. To address the entrainment loss, the Bonneville Power Administration commissioned a study to determine if fish would avoid areas illuminated by strobe lights in the forebay of the third powerplant. This work was conducted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in conjunction with the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation (Colville Confederated Tribes). From 2002 through 2004, six strobe lights were suspended in the center of the opening to the third powerplant forebay during summer months. Results from those studies indicated that fish appeared to be attracted to the illuminated area but only at night and when flow conditions within the third powerplant forebay were minimal. However, small but consistent results from these studies indicated that under high flow conditions, fish might be avoiding the lights. The 2005 study was designed to examine whether, under high flow conditions near the penstock openings, fish would avoid the lighted regions. Four omnidirectional strobe lights were deployed on the one trash rack directly in front of one turbine penstock. Seven splitbeam transducers were deployed to monitor fish approaching three penstock openings either from in front of the trash racks or moving down the dam behind the trash racks. Four key results emerged from the 2005 study. The results provide insight into the current level of entrainment and how fish respond to strobe lights under high flow conditions. First, very few fish were detected inside the trash racks. Of the more than 3,200 targets identified by the data processing, less than 100 were detected inside the trash racks. Only 23 fish were found inside the trash racks behind the strobe lights. Of those 21 fish, 13 were detected when the lights were on. Most of the fish detected behind the trash racks were above the turbine penstock but were headed downward. No fish were detected at night when minimal flows occurred between midnight and 4:00 a.m. Second, significantly more fish (P < 0.001) were detected in front of the trash racks when the lights were on at night. On a count-per-hour basis, the difference between lights off and lights on was apparent in the early morning hours at depths between 25 m and 50 m from the transducers. The lights were approximately 34 m below the splitbeam transducers, and fish detected at night with lights on were found at a median depth of approximately 35 m, compared to a median depth of from 20.6 to 23.5 m when the lights were off. The differences in depth between lights on and off at night were also significant (P < 0.001). Additionally, the increase in fish occurred only in front of the trash rack where the strobe lights were mounted; there was no increase in the number of detections by the transducers aimed away from the lights. Third, fish clearly manifested a behavioral response to the strobe lights during the day. When the lights were on, fish detected by three of the four transducers generally were swimming north, parallel to the face of the dam. Howeve
