  18. Double Chooz: Latest results

    E-Print Network [OSTI]

    J. I. Crespo-Anadón; for the Double Chooz collaboration

    2014-12-11T23:59:59.000Z

The latest results from the Double Chooz experiment on the neutrino mixing angle $\\theta_{13}$ are presented. A detector located at an average distance of 1050 m from the two reactor cores of the Chooz nuclear power plant has accumulated a live time of 467.90 days, corresponding to an exposure of 66.5 GW-ton-year (reactor power $\\times$ detector mass $\\times$ live time). A revised analysis has boosted the signal efficiency and reduced the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties compared to previous publications, paving the way for the two detector phase. The measured $\\sin^2 2\\theta_{13} = 0.090^{+0.032}_{-0.029}$ is extracted from a fit to the energy spectrum. A deviation from the prediction above a visible energy of 4 MeV is found, being consistent with an unaccounted reactor flux effect, which does not affect the $\\theta_{13}$ result. A consistent value of $\\theta_{13}$ is measured in a rate-only fit to the number of observed candidates as a function of the reactor power, confirming the robustness of the result.

Distributed collections are made of metadata entries that contain references to artifacts not controlled by the collection curators. These collections often have limited forms of change; for digital distributed collections, primarily creation and deletion of additional resources. However, there exists a class of digital collection that undergoes additional kinds of change. These collections consist of resources that are distributed across the Internet and brought together via hyperlinking. Resources in these collections can be expected to change as time goes on. Part of the difficulty in maintaining these collections is determining if a changed page is still a valid member of the collection. Others have tried to address this by defining a maximum allowed threshold of change, however, these methods treat change as a potential problem and treat web content as static despite its intrinsic dynamicism. Instead we acknowledge change on the web as a normal part of a web document and determine the difference between what a maintainer expects a page to do and what it actually does. In this work we evaluate options for extractors and analyzers from a suite of techniques against a human-generated ground-truth set of blog changes. The results of this work show a statistically significant improvement over traditional threshold techniques for our collection.

The PPM devices built to date which fit this class of operation consist of a variety of 50 MW and 75 MW devices constructed by SLAC, KEK (Tsukuba, Japan) and industry. All these tubes follow from the successful SLAC design of a 50 MW PPM klystron in 1996. In 2004 the latest two klystrons were constructed and tested with preliminary results reported at EPAC2004. The first of these two devices was tested to the full NLC specifications of 75 MW, 1.6 microseconds pulse length, and 120 Hz. This 14.4 kW average power operation came with a tube efficiency >50%. The most recent testing of these last two devices will be presented here. Design and manufacturing issues of the latest klystron, due to be tested by the Fall of 2005, are also discussed.

  1. Enhancing Graduate Student Communication to General Audiences through Blogging about Nanotechnology and Sustainability

We have developed and assessed a multiauthor science blog on the topic of nanotechnology and sustainability as a tool to improve the written communication and public engagement skills of graduate students. Focus group studies revealed that after participation in the blog, student authors felt more confident and capable of communicating technical topics to general audiences. Students' research mentors viewed this as an important component of their students' education, as indicated by survey data. Important design aspects of this effort include participation of an editor as well as having flexible content and target-audience guidelines. We have explicitly outlined aspects of the effort we see as critical in order to enable others to replicate this model in related settings.

Nonmarine to paralic detrital deposits accumulated in six large basins between Algeria and the Arabo-Nubian shield during major regression in latest Jurassic and Early Cretaceous time. The Ghadames Sirte (north-central Libya), and Northern (Egypt) basins lay along the cratonic margin of northeastern Africa. The Murzuk, Kufra, and Southern (Egypt) basins lay in the south within the craton. Data for reconstructing distribution, facies, and thickness of relevant sequences are adequate for the three northern basins only. High detrital influx near the end of Jurassic time and in mid-Cretaceous time produced regressive nubian facies composed largely of low-sinuosity stream and fahdelta deposits. In the west and southwest the Ghadames, Murzuk, and Kufra basins were filled with a few hundred meters of detritus after long-continued earlier Mesozoic aggradation. In northern Egypt the regressive sequence succeeded earlier Mesozoic marine sedimentation; in the Sirte and Southern basins correlative deposits accumulated on Precambrian and Variscan terranes after earlier Mesozoic uplift and erosion. Waning of detrital influx into southern Tunisia and adjacent Libya in the west and into Israel in the east initiated an Albian to early Cenomanian transgression of Tethys. By late Cenomanian time it had flooded the entire cratonic margin, and spread southward into the Murzuk and Southern basins, as well as onto the Arabo-Nubian shield. Latest Jurassic-earliest Cretaceous, mid-Cretaceous, and Late Cretaceous transgressions across northeastern Africa recorded in these sequences may reflect worldwide eustatic sea-level rises. In contrast, renewed large supply of detritus during each regression and a comparable subsidence history of intracratonic and marginal basins imply regional tectonic control. 6 figures.

  15. Bay Marchand revisited (again): Field development using the latest technology

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    McTigue, J.W. Jr.; Knecht, S.W.

    1995-12-31T23:59:59.000Z

Low-risk well recompletion and side-track opportunities are identified within the Bay Marchand-Timbalier Bay salt complex using 3D depth migration and multi-dimensional reservoir characterization technology. In 1992 Neomar Resources hit pay zones in 12 out of 14 wells located over amplitude anomalies ({open_quotes}bright spots{close_quotes}) in a proprietary 3D survey covering all or part of Bay Marchand Block 1-5. Production from several of these wells has been disappointing, however, and problems with structural position, trap integrity, and reservoir continuity are not obvious in the 3D time migrated data. Zydeco Exploration has obtained a license and has re-processed the Bay Marchand seismic survey in-house using interactive 3D velocity analysis and 3D pre-stack and post-stack depth migration. The new data reveal systematic changes in the positions of faults and smaller reservoirs that account for structural problems, such as missed objectives, and premature pressure depletion in several of the wells. Interpretation of the depth migrated data, seismic attribute analysis of 12 Miocene reservoirs, and multi-dimensional visual correlation and geo-statistical analysis between seismic attributes and log petrophysical data yields a reliable reservoir quality classification scheme within the 3D survey area. Reservoir classification color schemes overlain on their respective horizon surfaces in the presence of fault planes and salt surfaces in a dynamic 3D display reveals reservoir continuity or trap integrity problems which account for disappointing production in several of the wells. Surface enhancement techniques highlight subtle lineations that may also indicate reservoir compartmentalization. Improved structural imaging and reservoir characterization provide more than 20-20 hindsight. We have identified several relatively low-risk recompletions, sidetrack opportunities and proposed well locations.

Using the QGP motivated threshold model, where all the $J/\\psi$'s are suppressed above a threshold density, we have analyzed the latest version of the NA50 data on the centrality dependence of the $J/\\psi$ over Drell-Yan ratio. The data are not well explain in the model, unless the threshold density is largely smeared. Large smeared threshold density effectively excludes creation of any deconfined medium in the collision.

    2007-02-28T23:59:59.000Z

Recently, many efforts have been made to build dark energy models whose equation-of-state parameter can cross the so-called phantom divide $w_{de}=-1$. One of them is the so-called hessence dark energy model in which the role of dark energy is played by a non-canonical complex scalar field. In this work, we develop a simple method based on Hubble parameter $H(z)$ to reconstruct the hessence dark energy. As examples, we use two familiar parameterizations for $H(z)$ and fit them to the latest 182 type Ia supernovae Gold dataset. In the reconstruction, measurement errors are fully considered.

In this paper, a parameterized deceleration parameter $q(z)= 1/2 - a/(1 + z)^b$ is reconstructed from the latest type Ia supernovae gold dataset. It is found out that the transition redshift from decelerated expansion to accelerated expansion is at $z_T=0.35^{+0.14}_{-0.07}$ with $1\\sigma$ confidence level in this parameterized deceleration parameter. And, the best fit values of parameters in $1\\sigma$ errors are $a=1.56^{+0.99}_{-0.55}$ and $b=3.82^{+3.70}_{-2.27}$.

  17. Latest development in seismic texture analysis for subsurface structure, facies, and reservoir characterization: A review

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Gao, Dengliang

    2011-03-01T23:59:59.000Z

In exploration geology and geophysics, seismic texture is still a developing concept that has not been sufficiently known, although quite a number of different algorithms have been published in the literature. This paper provides a review of the seismic texture concepts and methodologies, focusing on latest developments in seismic amplitude texture analysis, with particular reference to the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and the texture model regression (TMR) methods. The GLCM method evaluates spatial arrangements of amplitude samples within an analysis window using a matrix (a two-dimensional histogram) of amplitude co-occurrence. The matrix is then transformed into a suite of texture attributes, such as homogeneity, contrast, and randomness, which provide the basis for seismic facies classification. The TMR method uses a texture model as reference to discriminate among seismic features based on a linear, least-squares regression analysis between the model and the data within an analysis window. By implementing customized texture model schemes, the TMR algorithm has the flexibility to characterize subsurface geology for different purposes. A texture model with a constant phase is effective at enhancing the visibility of seismic structural fabrics, a texture model with a variable phase is helpful for visualizing seismic facies, and a texture model with variable amplitude, frequency, and size is instrumental in calibrating seismic to reservoir properties. Preliminary test case studies in the very recent past have indicated that the latest developments in seismic texture analysis have added to the existing amplitude interpretation theories and methodologies. These and future developments in seismic texture theory and methodologies will hopefully lead to a better understanding of the geologic implications of the seismic texture concept and to an improved geologic interpretation of reflection seismic amplitude

  2. Exploring the Latest Union2 SNIa Dataset by Using Model-Independent Parametrization Methods

    2011-01-04T23:59:59.000Z

We explore the cosmological consequences of the recently released Union2 sample of 557 Type Ia supernovae (SNIa). Combining this latest SNIa dataset with the Cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 7 year (WMAP7) observations and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) results from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7), we measure the dark energy density function $f(z)\\equiv \\rho_{de}(z)/\\rho_{de}(0)$ as a free function of redshift. Two model-independent parametrization methods (the binned parametrization and the polynomial interpolation parametrization) are used in this paper. By using the $\\chi^2$ statistic and the Bayesian information criterion, we find that the current observational data are still too limited to distinguish which parametrization method is better, and a simple model has advantage in fitting observational data than a complicated model. Moreover, it is found that all these parametrizations demonstrate that the Union2 dataset is still consistent with a cosmological constant at 1$\\sigma$ confidence level. Therefore, the Union2 dataset is different from the Constitution SNIa dataset, which more favors a dynamical dark energy.

    1991-01-01T23:59:59.000Z

The nuclear test Dalhart, U4u, was executed at a depth of 2100 ft on October 13, 1988. This test has multiple radioactive isotopes or fission products associated with it and knowledge of the distribution of these isotopes is desirable for the Nuclear Test Program. A slant post shot hole was drilled in late August 1990 to sample the geologic material from the collapsed zone or chimney above Dalhart. This 9 7/8 inch borehole was drilled at approximately 19 degrees from the vertical toward the Dalhart executive depth. This borehole started at approximately 734 ft due south of the Dalhart event. Drilling circulation was lost at a slant depth of 1030 ft (980 ft True Vertical Depth, TVD). Drilling was completed to 2280 ft (2156 ft TVD). The water level was encountered at a depth of 1063 ft (1513 ft TVD). A Halliburton 1 11/16 in diameter TracerScan gamma-ray-spectroscopy log was run inside the drill string at a speed of 10 ft/min. Spectra were obtained from TD to the surface. Radioactive material produced by the test was present from TD to 1850 ft (1746 ft TVD). Spectra were acquired at .025 ft depth intervals and averages recorded digitally every ten ft and thirty ft were displayed on the blue line log together with the total observed gamma ray and casing collar locater signal. Also a DOE high intensity gamma log was run by Atlas Wireline Services from TD to the surface. This log did not detect any radioactive activity in the hole. The gamma-ray photo peaks on the spectroscopy log were used to determine the depths for sampling with the Hunt sidewall sampling tool. Eleven samples were acquired from the depth interval 2212 ft to 1823 ft (2089 to 1721 ft TVD). None of these samples contained enough activity to be measured with normal drillback survey instruments. 7 refs., 8 figs., 3 tabs.

The AMS-02 experiment is measuring the high energy charged cosmic rays with unprecedented accuracy. We explore the possibility of determining the cosmic-ray propagation models using the AMS-02 data $alone$. A global Bayesian analysis of the constraints on the cosmic-ray propagation models from the latest AMS-02 data on the Boron to Carbon nuclei flux ratio and proton flux is performed, with the assumption that the primary nucleon source is a broken power law in rigidity. The ratio of the diffusion coefficient $D_{0}$ to the diffusive halo height $Z_{h}$ is found to be determined with high accuracy $D_{0}/Z_{h}\\simeq 2.00\\pm0.07\\text{cm}^{2}\\text{s}^{-1}\\text{kpc}^{-1}$. The best-fit value of the halo width is $Z_{h}\\simeq 3.3$ kpc with uncertainty less than $50\\$. As a consequence, the typical uncertainties in the positron fraction is within a factor of two, and that in the antiproton flux is within an order of magnitude. Both of them are significantly smaller than that from the analyses prior to AMS-02. Taking into account all the uncertainties and correlations in the propagation parameters we derive conservative upper limits on the cross sections for DM annihilating into various standard model final states from the current PAMELA antiproton data. We also investigate the reconstruction capability of the future AMS-02 antiproton data on the DM properties. The result shows that for DM particles lighter than 100 GeV and with typical thermal annihilation cross section, the cross section can be well reconstructed with uncertainties about a factor of two for the AMS-02 three-year data taking.

  5. Latest developments and application of DB Riley's low NOx CCV{reg{underscore}sign} burner technology

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Penterson, C.; Ake, T.

    1998-07-01T23:59:59.000Z

Recent developments in DB Riley (DBR) low NOx burner technology and the application of this technology in coal fired utility boilers are discussed. Since the promulgation of the Clean Air Act Amendment in 1990, DBR has sold nearly 1,500 Controlled Combustion Venturi (CCV{reg{underscore}sign}) burners on pulverized coal fired utility boilers reducing NOx emissions 50--70% from uncontrolled levels. This technology has been retrofitted on boiler designs ranging in size and type from 50 MW front wall fired boilers to 1,300 MW opposed fired cell type boilers. In DBR's latest version of the CCV{reg{underscore}sign} burner, a second controlled flow air zone was added to enhance NOx control capability. Other developments included improved burner air flow measurement accuracy and several mechanical design upgrades such as new coal spreader designs for 3 year wear life. Test results of the CCV{reg{underscore}sign} dual air zone burner in DBR's 100 million Btu/hr (29 MW) coal burner test facility are presented. In the test program, coals from four utility boiler sites were fired to provide a range of coal properties. A baseline high volatile bituminous coal was also fired to provide a comparison with 1992 test data for the CCV{reg{underscore}sign} single register burner. The tests results showed that the second air zone enhanced NOx reduction capability by an additional 20% over the single register design. Computational fluid dynamic (DFD) modeling results of the CCV{reg{underscore}sign} dual air zone burner are also presented showing near field mixing patterns conducive to low NOx firing. DBR was recently awarded Phase IV of the Low Emission Boiler System (LEBS) program by the US Department of Energy to build a proof of concept facility representing the next major advancement in pulverized coal burning technology. A key part of winning that award were test results of the CCV{reg{underscore}sign} dual air zone burner with advanced air staging and coal reburning in a 100 million Btu/hr (20 MW) U-fired slagging combustor test facility. These results showed NOx emissions of less than 0.2 lb/million Btu (0.086 g/MJ) while converting the coal ash into an inert, non-leachable solid. This results is an 80% reduction in NOx emissions from currently operating U-fired slagging boilers.

The invention of ventilation cannot be ascribed to a certain date. It started with simple aeration when man brought fire into his abode and continued through different stages including air cooling using ice to finally arrive at the time when ventilation and air conditioning has become an essential part of our life and plays an important role in human evolution. This paper presents the history of ventilation and air conditioning, explains the key constraints over the centuries, and shows its influence on everyday life. Some examples of previous air-conditioning plants are described and different approaches to the way of calculation of ventilation systems discussed. It gives an overview of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) installations at CERN and points out their particularities. It also compares them with the latest technological developments in the field as well as showing the new trends that are being applied at CERN.

The model of holographic dark energy (HDE) with massive neutrinos and/or dark radiation is investigated in detail. The background and perturbation evolutions in the HDE model are calculated. We employ the PPF approach to overcome the gravity instability difficulty (perturbation divergence of dark energy) led by the equation-of-state parameter $w$ evolving across the phantom divide $w=-1$ in the HDE model with $cradiation on the CMB anisotropy power spectrum and the matter power spectrum in the HDE scenario are discussed. Furthermore, we constrain the models of HDE with massive neutrinos and/or dark radiation by using the latest measurements of expansion history and growth of structure, including the Planck CMB temperature data, the baryon acoustic oscillation data, the JLA supernova data, the Hubble constant direct measurement, the cosmic shear data of weak lensing, the Planck CMB lensing data, and the redshift space distortions data. On September 26, Cris Lombardi and I presented a paper at the ARIPPA. The economic and environmental advantages available to CFB operators through the firing of tire-derived fuel (TDF) are discussed. The bottom line savings to the operation can be significant. It is believed that a regional scrap tire processing facility, capable of making properly-sized fuel, can be supported in Pennsylvania. An effort to develop such an operation is described. The technology for shredding and sizing TDF is well-proven. The proper equipment has been identified and reliable sources of scrap tires have been located. What is needed is to establish a certain minimum annual TDF usage so that fuel user permit modification activity can begin. Data are presented on the production and use of TDF.

  5. Latest developments and application of DB Riley`s low NOx CCV{reg_sign} burner technology

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Penterson, C.; Ake, T. [DB Riley, Inc., Worcester, MA (United States)

    1998-04-01T23:59:59.000Z

Recent developments in DB Riley (DBR) low NO{sub x} burner technology and the application of this technology in coal fired utility boilers are discussed. Since the promulgation of the Clean Air Act Amendment in 1990, DBR has sold nearly 1500 Controlled Combustion Venturi (CCV{reg_sign}) burners on pulverized coal fired utility boilers reducing NOx emissions 50 - 70% from uncontrolled levels. This technology has been retrofitted on boiler designs ranging in size and type from 50 MW front wall fired boilers to 1300 MW opposed fired cell type boilers. In DBR`s latest version of the CCV{reg_sign} burner, a second controlled flow air zone was added to enhance NO{sub x} control capability. Other developments included improved burner air flow measurement accuracy and several mechanical design upgrades such as new coal spreader designs for 3 year wear life. Test results of the CCV{reg_sign} dual air zone burner in DBR`s 100 million Btu/hr (29 MW) coal burner test facility are presented. In the test program, coals from four utility boiler sites were fired to provide a range of coal properties. A baseline high volatile bituminous coal was also fired to provide a comparison with 1992 test data for the CCV{reg_sign} single register burner. The test results showed that the second air zone enhanced NO{sub x} reduction capability by an additional 20% over the single register design. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling results of the CCV{reg_sign} dual air zone burner are also presented showing near field mixing patterns conducive to low NO{sub x} firing.

  6. Post-Retrofit Residential Assessments

    2012-04-30T23:59:59.000Z

This study examined a range of factors influencing energy consumption in households that had participated in residential energy-efficiency upgrades. The study was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and was conducted by faculty and staff of Portland State University Center for Urban Studies and Department of Economics. This work was made possible through the assistance and support of the Energy Trust of Oregon (ETO), whose residential energy-efficiency programs provided the population from which the sample cases were drawn. All households in the study had participated in the ETO Home Performance with Energy Star (HPwES) program. A number of these had concurrently pursued measures through other ETO programs. Post-retrofit energy outcomes are rarely investigated on a house-by-house basis. Rather, aggregate changes are ordinarily the focus of program impact evaluations, with deviation from aggregate expectations chalked up to measurement error, the vagaries of weather and idiosyncrasies of occupants. However, understanding how homes perform post-retrofit on an individual basis can give important insights to increase energy savings at the participant and the programmatic level. Taking a more disaggregated approach, this study analyzed energy consumption data from before and after the retrofit activity and made comparisons with engineering estimates for the upgrades, to identify households that performed differently from what may have been expected based on the estimates. A statistical analysis using hierarchal linear models, which accounted for weather variations, was performed looking separately at gas and electrical use during the periods before and after upgrades took place. A more straightforward comparison of billing data for 12-month periods before and after the intervention was also performed, yielding the majority of the cases examined. The later approach allowed total energy use and costs to be assessed but did not account for weather variation. From this statistical analysis, 18 study participants were selected and interviewed. The participants completed an in-home interview covering a range of topics, including changes in occupancy and additional changes to the homes that may have affected energy use. The goal of the interviews was to identify factors that may have contributed to unusual energy performance. These factors were identified by their frequency of occurrence in outperforming or underperforming homes, or simply by identifying factors that had the largest impact on overall savings. The motivations and levels of satisfaction with the outcomes of the upgrades were covered in detail, as well as extensive discussions of behaviors pertaining to thermal control, lighting, water, and appliance use. Most of cases studied achieved substantial energy savings, although it was more common for the projected savings to be greater than the demonstrated savings. Two factors that played a very large role in savings variation were 1) changes in occupancy and 2) fenestration improvements outside of the incentive programs. Motivation for pursuing the upgrades (e.g., environmental sustainability vs. comfort or cost savings) did not seem to play any role in achieving savings. Participants generally were more concerned with maintaining aesthetics through lighting than comfort through heating or cooling. They also seemed more likely to turn the lights off when leaving a room than to turn the heat off when leaving the home.

  3. TRIMPWR: A post processor for TRIMHX

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Trumble, E.F.

    1989-11-01T23:59:59.000Z

The TRIMPWR code has been developed as a post processor for TRIMHX (transient 3D diffusion code) in support of the reactor limits program. TRIMPWR is designed to produce JOSHUA files containing: core power as a function of time, assembly power by hex as a function of time, assembly power post peaking as a function of time, and axial power shapes for each assembly as a function of time (formatted for use by the FLOWTRAN code) from the output of a TRIMHX run. In an attempt to simplify the reactor limits process by reducing the number of assemblies which must be run through FLOWTRAN, TRIMPWR also sorts the assemblies by the product of the power post peaking and the maximum normalized axial power density for each assembly. This follows from the assumption that those assemblies having the maximum value of this product will have the most restrictive limits.
