Automatic Testing Tool for OSCAR Using System-level Virtualization

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

To ensure quality, software development has to include testing mechanisms. OSCAR today supports several Linux distributions and several architectures. In such a context, the release cycle suffers of a important overhead created by the testing and stabilization phase. To address this issue, an approach is to implement a tool for automatic testing. This paper presents such a tool which is based on the OSCAR command line interface. This tool, based on system-level virtualization techniques, creates a virtual cluster to perform the test. This approach has the benefit of not corrupting the system of the physical machine and guarantee that the environment used for testing has not been corrupted before testing.

Challenging human and sporting boundaries: The case of Oscar Pistorius

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The controversy surrounding Oscar Pistorius's disputed eligibility for Olympic participation serves here as a focal point for a number of debates regarding the ethics of human enhancement, conceptions of ability and disability, and the transformative effects of technology upon the nature of sports competition itself. A world beating Paralympics athlete, Pistorius attempted to gain eligibility to represent South Africa in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. An account is given as to the process of his initial rejection, based upon scientific experiments that argued his performance was unacceptably boosted, and the subsequent successful appeal that undermined the scientific basis of the judgement while leaving unchallenged the deeper question of the role that biotechnology might play in transforming athletic performance. We show how what began as an eligibility dispute in the sports arena, became a political debate that raised fundamental questions about how society at large regarding the place for technological and enhanced humans, and of performers of exceptional ability.

Comparing Finesse simulations, analytical solutions and OSCAR simulations of Fabry-Perot alignment signals

E-Print Network [OSTI]

This document records the results of a comparison of the interferometer simulation Finesse against an analytic (MATLAB based) calculation of the alignment sensing signals of a Fabry Perot cavity. This task was started during the commissioning workshop at the LIGO Livingston site between the 28.1. and 1.02 2013 with the aim of creating a reference example for validating numerical simulation tools. The FFT based simulation OSCAR joined the battle later.

Inspection Inspection Proof-of-Concept Test Phase 1A - Generating SDMS PeopleNet, a producer of current electronic on- board recorder (EOBR) technology, designed a system to produce a Safety Data Message Set (SDMS). Data obtained during a 10-hour test was compared to similar data obtained through an ORNL monitoring system comprised of an eDAQ- lite, VBOX III, Air-Weigh, and custom software. DESCRIPTION RESULTS The majority of the data obtained from the PeopleNet SDMS was accurate. However, the tested system was unable to include the weight and ABS flag components of the SDMS. Also, over an hour was required in some cases for driver status changes to be reflected in the SDMS. Safety inspections are performed on commercial vehicles to promote safety on the roadways;

Energy Efficient Electric Motors BY OSCAR BRANDSER Improvements in

E-Print Network [OSTI]

three-phase induction motors present a strong opportunity to reduce plant operating costs. Iff iciency Gap: Motors account for as much as 90 percent of the total electrical usage in commercial and industrial applications. Even small improvements in motor efficiency result in substantial energy savings. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 1992 E lectric motors are among the most energy efficient devices man has ever created. Today, more efficient electric motors are available than ever before. Simple economics will justify investing in energy efficient motors for most commercial and industrial applications. Energy costs are on the rise and conservation practices- such as the use of energy efficient motors-will help control future energy costs. Conservation practices can help slow down electric load growth and offset the need to add generation capacity. Conservation can help improve productivity by using resources more efficiently and will also help to keep electric costs low. This is an age of increasing costs of electricity due mainly to higher demands for a limited resource and increasingly higher capital costs of new power plants. These and other factors have encouraged many utilities to develop conservation programs and increase energy efficiency awareness among their customers. Required generation capacity will be greater than available capacity in the U.S. by the Year 2000, according to some projections, without conservation and elec-

Objective Supply Capability Adaptive Redesign Objective Supply Capability Adaptive Redesign Problem Statement: - The National Guard Bureau relies on standard Army systems that do not "talk" to each other and fail to meet requirements unique to the National Guard Technical Approach: - OSCAR is an integrated system of off-the-shelf hardware and custom-developed software - By interfacing with multiple legacy army systems, OSCAR bridges the gaps between these systems - OSCAR tracks the movement of assets and automates many equipment redistribution tasks that would otherwise be performed manually Benefit: - OSCAR streamlines the movement of high-end equipment, increases readiness, reduces excess, saves money, and improves asset visibility Technology Readiness Level 9 Kevin Rasch

Coordinated Multi-layer Multi-domain Optical Network (COMMON) for Large-Scale Science Applications (COMMON)

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We intend to implement a Coordinated Multi-layer Multi-domain Optical Network (COMMON) Framework for Large-scale Science Applications. In the COMMON project, specific problems to be addressed include 1) anycast/multicast/manycast request provisioning, 2) deployable OSCARS enhancements, 3) multi-layer, multi-domain quality of service (QoS), and 4) multi-layer, multidomain path survivability. In what follows, we outline the progress in the above categories (Year 1, 2, and 3 deliverables).

A New Approach in Advance Network Reservation and Provisioning for High-Performance Scientific Data Transfers

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Scientific applications already generate many terabytes and even petabytes of data from supercomputer runs and large-scale experiments. The need for transferring data chunks of ever-increasing sizes through the network shows no sign of abating. Hence, we need high-bandwidth high speed networks such as ESnet (Energy Sciences Network). Network reservation systems, i.e. ESnet's OSCARS (On-demand Secure Circuits and Advance Reservation System) establish guaranteed bandwidth of secure virtual circuits at a certain time, for a certain bandwidth and length of time. OSCARS checks network availability and capacity for the specified period of time, and allocates requested bandwidth for that user if it is available. If the requested reservation cannot be granted, no further suggestion is returned back to the user. Further, there is no possibility from the users view-point to make an optimal choice. We report a new algorithm, where the user specifies the total volume that needs to be transferred, a maximum bandwidth that he/she can use, and a desired time period within which the transfer should be done. The algorithm can find alternate allocation possibilities, including earliest time for completion, or shortest transfer duration - leaving the choice to the user. We present a novel approach for path finding in time-dependent networks, and a new polynomial algorithm to find possible reservation options according to given constraints. We have implemented our algorithm for testing and incorporation into a future version of ESnet?s OSCARS. Our approach provides a basis for provisioning end-to-end high performance data transfers over storage and network resources.

Final Report on DOE Project entitled Dynamic Optimized Advanced Scheduling of Bandwidth Demands for Large-Scale Science Applications

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

In this project, developed scheduling frameworks for dynamic bandwidth demands for large-scale science applications. In particular, we developed scheduling algorithms for dynamic bandwidth demands in this project. Apart from theoretical approaches such as Integer Linear Programming, Tabu Search and Genetic Algorithm heuristics, we have utilized practical data from ESnet OSCARS project (from our DOE lab partners) to conduct realistic simulations of our approaches. We have disseminated our work through conference paper presentations and journal papers and a book chapter. In this project we addressed the problem of scheduling of lightpaths over optical wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks. We published several conference papers and journal papers on this topic. We also addressed the problems of joint allocation of computing, storage and networking resources in Grid/Cloud networks and proposed energy-efficient mechanisms for operatin optical WDM networks.

New fuels based on Thorium have been tested: Thorium/Plutonium and Thorium/Uranium- 233, with different fissile isotope contents. Changes in the geometry of the assemblies were also explored to modify the moderation ratio, and consequently the neutron flux spectrum. A core equivalent assembly methodology was introduced as an exploratory approach and to reduce the computation time. Several basic safety analyses were also performed. We have finally developed a new scenario code, named OSCAR (Optimized Scenario Code for Advanced Reactors), to study the efficiency of these modified reactors in transition to Gen IV reactors or in symbiotic fleet. Broader source: All U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office Webpages (Extended Search)

Ani Sumant Garners Two R&D100 Awards Ani Sumant Garners Two R&D100 Awards Ani Sumant Nanocrystalline diamond-related (NCD) devices developed by Anirudha Sumant of the Nanofabrication & Devices Group garnered two of the 2013 R&D 100 awards. Nicknamed the "Oscars of Innovation," the awards recognize a year's most important scientific and technological breakthroughs. The winners include the Miraj Diamond(tm) platform, a manufacturing process developed with AKHAN Technologies, Inc., and the Nanocrystalline Diamond Technologies NCD Plus coating, developed with NCD Technologies. With these awards, Sumant becomes the first Argonne scientist to win two R&D 100 awards in the same year. The Miraj Diamond(tm) platform resulted from the marriage of two scientific breakthroughs: the ability to deposit nanocrystalline diamond films at relatively low temperatures and a doping process that makes NCD into a good semiconducting material. Sumant and his colleagues developed the low-temperature NCD deposition technology at Argonne's Center for Nanoscale Materials, while the doping technique was developed at AKHAN Technologies, an industry partner based in Illinois. These technologies together will allow manufacturers to create better integrated circuits for telecommunications, defense and aviation electronics.

A novel PPAR{gamma} agonist, KR62776, suppresses RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation and activity by inhibiting MAP kinase pathways

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We investigated the effects of a novel peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor {gamma} (PPAR{gamma}) agonist, KR62776, on osteoclast differentiation and function, and on the underlying signaling pathways. KR62776 markedly suppressed differentiation into osteoclasts in various osteoclast model systems, including bone marrow mononuclear (BMM) cells and a co-culture of calvarial osteoblasts and BMM cells. KR62776 suppressed the activation of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and the expression of genes associated with osteoclast differentiation, such as TRAP, dendritic cell-specific transmembrane protein (DC-STAMP), and osteoclast-associated receptor (OSCAR). Furthermore, KR62776 reduced resorption pit formation in osteoclasts, and down-regulated genes essential for osteoclast activity, such as Src and {alpha}v{beta}3 integrin. An analysis of a signaling pathway showed that KR62776 inhibited the receptor activator of nuclear factor-{kappa}B ligand (RANKL)-induced activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK), extracellular regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and nuclear factor-{kappa}B (NF-{kappa}B). Together, these results demonstrate that KR62776 negatively affects osteoclast differentiation and activity by inhibiting the RANKL-induced activation of MAP kinases and NF-{kappa}B.

Flue gas desulfurization: Physicochemical and biotechnological approaches

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Various flue gas desulfurization processes - physicochemical, biological, and chemobiological - for the reduction of emission of SO{sub 2} with recovery of an economic by-product have been reviewed. The physicochemical processes have been categorized as 'once-through' and 'regenerable.' The prominent once-through technologies include wet and dry scrubbing. The wet scrubbing technologies include wet limestone, lime-inhibited oxidation, limestone forced oxidation, and magnesium-enhanced lime and sodium scrubbing. The dry scrubbing constitutes lime spray drying, furnace sorbent injection, economizer sorbent injection, duct sorbent injection, HYPAS sorbent injection, and circulating fluidized bed treatment process. The regenerable wet and dry processes include the Wellman Lord's process, citrate process, sodium carbonate eutectic process, magnesium oxide process, amine process, aqueous ammonia process, Berglau Forchung's process, and Shell's process. Besides these, the recently developed technologies such as the COBRA process, the OSCAR process, and the emerging biotechnological and chemobiological processes are also discussed. A detailed outline of the chemistry, the advantages and disadvantages, and the future research and development needs for each of these commercially viable processes is also discussed.

Open standards for cascade models for RHIC: Volume 1. Proceedings of RIKEN BNL Research Center workshop

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

It is widely recognized that cascade models are potentially effective and powerful tools for interpreting and predicting multi-particle observables in heavy ion physics. However, the lack of common standards, documentation, version control, and accessibility have made it difficult to apply objective scientific criteria for evaluating the many physical and algorithmic assumptions or even to reproduce some published results. The first RIKEN Research Center workshop was proposed by Yang Pang to address this problem by establishing open standards for original codes for applications to nuclear collisions at RHIC energies. The aim of this first workshop is: (1) to prepare a WWW depository site for original source codes and detailed documentation with examples; (2) to develop and perform standardized test for the models such as Lorentz invariance, kinetic theory comparisons, and thermodynamic simulations; (3) to publish a compilation of results of the above work in a journal e.g., ``Heavy Ion Physics``; and (4) to establish a policy statement on a set of minimal requirements for inclusion in the OSCAR-WWW depository.

Manhattan Project: Nuclear Energy and the Public's Right to Know

Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)

The Smyth Report, August 1945. NUCLEAR ENERGY AND THE The Smyth Report, August 1945. NUCLEAR ENERGY AND THE PUBLIC'S RIGHT TO KNOW Resources > Openness Given ongoing concerns with terrorism and nuclear proliferation, a word about secrecy, the information presented on this web site, and the public's right to know is in order. The information on this web site is currently available, and has long been available, in any major university library. The basic story of the Manhattan Project was first released to the public in August 1945 in the "Smyth Report" (right), a book-length study of the Manhattan Project. It was personally reviewed by Leslie Groves, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Ernest O. Lawrence, and others, to ensure that it contained no information that would be of assistance to anyone who might try to build a nuclear weapon. The information from the Smyth Report and other contemporary MED press releases has been supplemented in subsequent years by numerous other histories of the Manhattan Project, including a comprehensive official history produced by the Atomic Energy Henry D. Smyth confers with Ernest O. Lawrence about the Smyth Report, Berkeley, fall 1944. Commission (AEC) historians Richard G. Hewlett and Oscar E. Anderson, Jr. As for the most potentially-sensitive category of entries on this web site, "Science," most of the text for these entries was taken directly from an unclassified 1963 AEC publication, The Atomic Energy Deskbook. Created under the personal supervision of AEC Chairman Glenn T. Seaborg, the Deskbook was intended from the start to be a reference work for the public. The intent of all of these publications was to reveal what could be revealed and to keep secret what needed to be kept secret. Accordingly, this web site has been reviewed by the Department of Energy's Office of Classification and confirmed to be unclassified. (For more information on Manhattan Project-related publications, see the list of "Suggested Readings.")

Takes Top Honors for Innovation Takes Top Honors for Innovation From the start of a project, NETL researchers aim to create something that changes lives for the better, improving our health, our environment, and our way of living. Inspired by the world around them, they thrive on pushing technology past the threshold of what is possible, ever-pioneering the future of energy. NETL is always thrilled when our exceptional researchers and the products and technologies they develop are acknowledged. On October 13, R&D Magazine held its annual R&D 100 Awards ceremony during which it recognized collaborative efforts by NETL that brought three new technologies to the marketplace in the past year. Each year, R&D Magazine honors 100 of the year's most technologically significant inventions with its R&D 100 Awards. These "Oscars of Innovation" commend the hard work of our nation's scientists for their newly commercialized products and confer a mark of excellence for their efforts. Many of the products recognized by R&D Magazine in the past are common today. The automated teller machine (ATM) was showcased by R&D Magazine in 1973. The halogen lamp, which made the top 100 list in 1974, is now a replacement for the less-efficient incandescent bulb. And today, movies are watched across the nation on HDTV, a novel concept recognized by R&D Magazine in 1998. With technologies like these on its list of favorites, R&D Magazine is certainly a prophet on the topic of revolutionary innovations.
