Photo of the Week: Lego Rendition of SLAC National Laboratory's Linear

Energy.gov (U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)) Indexed Site

Lego Rendition of SLAC National Laboratory's Lego Rendition of SLAC National Laboratory's Linear Particle Accelerator Photo of the Week: Lego Rendition of SLAC National Laboratory's Linear Particle Accelerator February 4, 2013 - 10:26am Addthis At two miles long, SLAC's linear particle accelerator is a monster of a machine. But now, thanks to an old collection of Legos and some creative work by SLAC graphic designer Greg Stewart, the two-mile accelerator has been drastically reduced in size. After happening upon his Legos at home one night, Stewart decided to spend his evening designing, building and photographing this Lego diorama homage to the inside of the SLAC linac, a place that's 20 feet underground and not often seen by anyone besides the accelerator engineers who work there. SLAC's safety officers will even be pleased to see the Lego workers wearing their "PPE" (personal protective equipment, in this case helmets). See an actual photo of the SLAC linac. | Photo courtesy of Greg Stewart, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

Advocacy for the Archives and History Office of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory: Stages and Methods

SciTech Connect

Advocating for the good of the SLAC Archives and History Office (AHO) has not been a one-time affair, nor has it been a one-method procedure. It has required taking time to ascertain the current and perhaps predict the future climate of the Laboratory, and it has required developing and implementing a portfolio of approaches to the goal of building a stronger archive program by strengthening and appropriately expanding its resources. Among the successful tools in the AHO advocacy portfolio, the Archives Program Review Committee has been the most visible. The Committee and the role it serves as well as other formal and informal advocacy efforts are the focus of this case study My remarks today will begin with a brief introduction to advocacy and outreach as I understand them, and with a description of the Archives and History Office's efforts to understand and work within the corporate culture of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. I will then share with you some of the tools we have employed to advocate for the Archives and History Office programs and activities; and finally, I will talk about how well - or badly - those tools have served us over the past decade.

Diagnostics with an X-ray Laser? Lessons from the First Diagnostics with an X-ray Laser? Lessons from the First Nanoscale Imaging of Airborne Particles Mike Bogan Stanford PULSE Institute, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, 2575 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park, CA 94025, USA What does airborne particulate matter look like? How do we develop quantitative descriptors for particles of complex morphology? These challenges were highlighted in the NIST workshop report "Aerosol Metrology Needs for Climate Science" (Dec, 2011). Sure, we can capture aerosol particles on surfaces - removing them from their airborne state - and probe them with high resolution optical and chemical imaging tools, but what information do we lose about the airborne particles? How can we follow dynamics? In this talk we will explore these very basic questions and their importance to combustion

History of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) History of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) You are here: DOE-ID Home > Inside ID > Brief History Site History The Idaho National Laboratory (INL), an 890-square-mile section of desert in southeast Idaho, was established in 1949 as the National Reactor Testing Station. Initially, the missions at the INL were the development of civilian and defense nuclear reactor technologies and management of spent nuclear fuel. Fifty-two reactors—most of them first-of-a-kind—were built, including the Navy’s first prototype nuclear propulsion plant. Of the 52 reactors, three remain in operation at the site. In 1951, the INL achieved one of the most significant scientific accomplishments of the century—the first use of nuclear fission to produce a usable quantity of electricity at the Experimental Breeder Reactor No.

About Nuclear Weapons at Sandia About Nuclear Weapons at Sandia Weapons Researcher World-class scientists and engineers come to Sandia to conduct breakthrough research in nuclear weapons. Sandia designs more than 6,300 parts of a modern nuclear weapon's 6,500 components. Our state-of-the-art laboratories facilitate large-scale testing and computer simulation. Sandia's work is of the highest consequence and those doing the work face awesome responsibilities. Unlike other national labs, which focus on the physics package, Sandia's work is to weaponize the physics package. Sandia must ensure that the other 95% of the weapon's parts work perfectly at every point of contact with the delivery systems. This requires the broadest competencies in engineering, with a deep science foundation. At the core of Sandia's nuclear weapons program is warhead systems

Design Standards for the NETL Logo Design Standards for the NETL Logo May 2013 The Logo Display of the NETL logo is critical because this symbol represents who we are - it's our signature. Consistent application of the logo is crucial to the success of our identity. As the primary identifier of the National Energy Technology Laboratory, it is essential that the logo's appearance is consistent throughout all of the Laboratory's communications. Over time, consistent and repeated use of the logo will establish a strengthened visual identity for the laboratory. To ensure consistency it is critical for every user of the logo, regardless of personal preference, to use it in accordance with the guidelines that follow. The height of the NETL logo is .75 times the length, a 3 by 4 ratio. This relationship is always the same, regardless of

We would like to be able to compare measurements made at the plant with those made at ANL and potentially with those made at the STI facility. Since there are no permanent magnet standard samples, measurement systems are compared by trading sets of magnets set aside as standards. APS has ten NdFeB permanent magnet blocks supplied by Sumitomo [2] that we use to make these comparisons. These magnet samples have been exten- sively measured on the APS system. ICE SLURRY PHASE-CHANGE COOLANTS FOR ICE SLURRY PHASE-CHANGE COOLANTS FOR INDUSTRIAL AND MEDICAL APPLICATIONS K. Kasza*, Y. Wu, J. Heine, D. Sheradon, and Steve Lake * Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Argonne Illinois, 60439, USA kasza@anl.gov Abstract Over the last 15 years, interest in using phase-change ice slurry coolants has grown significantly. Because of the high energy content of ice slurry, which is due to the phase change (melting) of the ice particles under a cooling load, the cooling capacity of ice slurry is many times greater than that of single phase fluids. Research is focused on understanding ice slurry behavior and developing highly-loaded, storable, and pumpable ice slurry coolants. Research has shown that the ice slurry must be engineered to have the correct

FACET: SLAC___s New User Facility

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

FACET (Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests) is a new User Facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The first User Run started in spring 2012 with 20 GeV, 3 nC electron beams. The facility is designed to provide short (20 {micro}m) bunches and small (20 {micro}m wide) spot sizes, producing uniquely high power beams. FACET supports studies from many fields but in particular those of Plasma Wakefield Acceleration and Dielectric Wakefield Acceleration. The creation of drive and witness bunches and shaped bunch profiles is possible with 'Notch' Collimation. FACET is also a source of THz radiation for material studies. Positrons will be available at FACET in future user runs. We present the User Facility and the available tools and opportunities for future experiments.

Argonne's Nobelists Argonne's Nobelists Three Argonne physicists have been honored with Nobel Prizes: Enrico Fermi, Argonne's founding director, won the 1938 Nobel Prize in physics for his demonstrations of the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation and for his related discovery of nuclear reactions brought about by slow neutrons. Maria Goeppert Mayer shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in physics. While working at Argonne in 1948, she developed the "nuclear shell model" to explain how neutrons and protons within atomic nuclei are structured. Alexei A. Abrikosov shared the 2003 Nobel Prize in physics for research on condensed-matter physics and superconductivity. Our history sparked the nation's future AVIDAC, Argonne's first digital computer, began operation in January 1953.
