Energy.gov (U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)) Indexed Site

Dillons Kwik Shop Dillons Kwik Shop After a tornado destroyed 95% of Greensburg, Kansas, in May 2007, residents needed a convenience store for gas and groceries. Just a year after the storm, Kroger Company broke ground on a prototype for rural grocery stores. Completed in February 2009, the new Dillons Kwik Shop is a hybrid between a convenience store and a gas station. Kroger Company hopes this type of store will serve the grocer needs of several rural county areas. Additionally, this building includes a number of unique green building and energy efficiency features. ENERGY EFFICIENCY FEATURES * Well-insulated roof with an R-value of R-24 that prevents heat loss and maintains cooler temperatures in summer * A high albedo reflective roof coating reflects heat away from the building in

in Autumn in Autumn Nature Bulletin No. 465-A October 7, 1972 Forest Preserve District of Cook County George W. Dunne, President Roland F. Eisenbeis, Supt. of Conservation SCHOOL TRIPS IN AUTUMN Autumn is an ideal season for classrooms out-of-doors, when teachers and their pupils enjoy and learn from trips to convenient natural areas such as our forest preserves. The days are usually sunny, the air is cool and invigorating, the fields and woodlands are clothed with tapestries of rich colors, the birds are flocking southward, and it is harvest time in all the land. Field trips, now or at any time in the school year, make real and vivid those subjects studied in the classroom and its textbooks. On field trips, teachers and youngsters explore and discover together. They employ all five senses: they see, hear, smell, taste and feel. Such learning, by the most natural and enjoyable process, is rapid and sticks with them. Inevitably, a field trip will yield a fund of unforgettable experiences and a wealth of specimens for the classroom or pupils' own collections.

Only a few decades ago, most Illinois people resided on farms or in small towns. They lived close to the soil. From childhood they had been so familiar with the out-of-doors that special schooling in ecology, plant life, wildlife and land management seemed superfluous.

Hunton Group core workshop and field trip

SciTech Connect

The Late Ordovician-Silurian-Devonian Hunton Group is a moderately thick sequence of shallow-marine carbonates deposited on the south edge of the North American craton. This rock unit is a major target for petroleum exploration and reservoir development in the southern Midcontinent. The workshop described here was held to display cores, outcrop samples, and other reservoir-characterization studies of the Hunton Group and equivalent strata throughout the region. A field trip was organized to complement the workshop by allowing examination of excellent outcrops of the Hunton Group of the Arbuckle Mountains.

NLE Websites -- All DOE Office Websites (Extended Search)

& Projects in Spring & Projects in Spring Nature Bulletin No. 484 March 9, 1957 Forest Preserve District of Cook County Daniel Ryan, President Roberts Mann, Conservation Editor David H. Thompson, Senior Naturalist SCHOOL TRIPS & PROJECTS IN SPRINg Spring is the morning of the year when nature reawakens. The days become noticeably longer and warmer. We feel an urge to get out-of- doors and see green growing plants, early wildflowers, and swelling buds on trees and shrubs; see and hear birds returning from their winter homes; hear the mating songs of frogs and toads. The nearest forest preserve, park, meadow or hedgerow -- even a city street or weedy vacant lot -- will have a wealth of plant and animal life. March is a chancy month for field trips but spring can be perking in a classroom before many signs of it appear outdoors. One twig of a forsythia bush, placed in a bottle of water, will soon display its yellow flowers; willow and aspen twigs will develop fat fuzzy catkins; the end of branches from cottonwood, soft maple and elm trees will reveal how some of their winter buds produce flowers and others burst into leaves. The long reddish catkins on a male cottonwood are showy but the small flowers of a maple or an elm are no less beautiful, although seldom noticed on the trees.

Causal models of trip replanning in TravTek

SciTech Connect

The TravTek operational field test was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of route planning, route guidance and various navigational aiding modalities for Advanced Traveler Information Systems in ground vehicles. A causal network was constructed in order to achieve a better understanding of the dependencies among variables implicated in the replanning process. Causal inferences were modeled using path analysis techniques. The original Yoked Driver study reported that addition of real-time navigation planning did not increase trip efficiency during initial trip planning. Data mining of the relatively complete database revealed that the incidence of dynamic trip replanning was only 0.51% or 1 out of every 198 trips. Nevertheless, the replanning acceptance rate was 92.8%, suggesting that less conservative criteria might have been acceptable to drivers. Several points can be made based upon the path analysis techniques. Drivers who rejected better route offers were more likely to be male renters; rejected routes were apparently offered at earlier times with a lower predicted time savings and fewer maneuvers. Failure to accept a better route also apparently resulted in fewer wrong-turn deviations. Contrary to expectations, wrong-turn count and time loss appeared as semi-independent hubs in the resultant causal network. Implications of the path analysis are discussed. Proposals for in-vehicle information systems are formulated to increase driver participation as co-planner, and increase the likelihood that trip replanning will positively impact trip efficiency.

Early embryonic lethality caused by targeted disruption of the TRAF-interacting protein (TRIP) gene

SciTech Connect

Tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR)-associated factors (TRAFs) are key adaptor molecules in the TNFR-signaling complexes that promote a wide variety of signaling cascades including cell proliferation, activation, differentiation, and apoptosis. TRAF-interacting protein (TRIP) is required for the inhibitory regulation of TNF-induced NF-{kappa}B signaling via the TNFR/TRAF-signaling complexes in vitro. TRIP also directly interacts with the familial cylindromatosis tumor suppressor gene (CYLD) and negatively regulates NF-{kappa}B activation in vitro. However, although there appears to be a relationship between TRIP, the TRAFs and also CYLD as modulators of NF-{kappa}B signaling in vitro, the functional role of TRIP in vivo is still unclear. To identify the role of TRIP in vivo, we have generated TRIP-deficient mice. Homozygous mouse embryos were found to die shortly after implantation due to proliferation defects and excessive cell death. These results indicate that TRIP is an essential factor during early mouse embryonic development in vivo.

Commute trip reduction in Washington: Base year worksite characteristics and programs

SciTech Connect

Employers in Washington`s eight most populous counties are engaged in an effort to reduce their employees` use of single occupant automobiles for commuting. This report documents the status of those employers at the beginning of the Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) program as a basis for evaluating the impacts of the program. The first section provides a brief exploration of the Washington CTR Law and a history of the first steps in its implementation. The second section presents a summary of the characteristics of the worksites affected by the law. The CTR Law calls for reductions in single occupant vehicle (SOV) commuting and in vehicle miles traveled (VMT). The third section of this report presents baseline measurements of SOV and VMT and goals for reducing them. The fourth section provides summary information on the first year of programs employers planned to implement. The final section very briefly outlines actions the Commute Trip Reduction law calls for between 1995 and 1999.

Revealing cyclic hardening mechanism of a TRIP steel by real-time in situ neutron diffraction

SciTech Connect

Real-time in situ neutron diffraction was performed on a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steel under cyclic loading at room temperature. By Rietveld refinement and single peak analysis, the volume fraction and average stress estimates as well as dislocation density of individual phases (austenite and martensite phase) were derived. The results reveal that the volume fraction of martensite phase, instead of individual phase strengthening, should be accounted for the remarkable secondary cyclic hardening.

The processing, manufacturing, or "otherwise use" Section313 chemicals are combined to determine TRI reportability. Such is the case with lead metal, which is one of two chemicals for which reportin~ forms were prepared in this pilot study (Task 2;1. The lead shop at ORNL exceeded the reporting threshold, causing a lead activity at a Y-1 2 machine shop and lead in waste at ETTP to be reportable. TRI-P3 report preparation time for lead totaled 36.5 hours. The second chemical investigated and reported (chromium) also required nearly a man-week for report preparation and documentation by experienced TRI personnel. The ORR TRI report typically includes about six chemicals, so an estimate of the TRI-P3 incremental reporting burden for ORR would be six weeks for experienced personnel axI d two/three man-months for first-time ORR preparers.

Sensitivity analysis on the effect of software-induced common cause failure probability in the computer-based reactor trip system unavailability

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The reactor trip system has been digitized in advanced nuclear power plants, since the programmable nature of computer based systems has a number of advantages over non-programmable systems. However, software is still vulnerable to common cause failure (CCF). Residual software faults represent a CCF concern, which threat the implemented achievements. This study attempts to assess the effectiveness of so-called defensive strategies against software CCF with respect to reliability. Sensitivity analysis has been performed by re-quantifying the models upon changing the software failure probability. Importance measures then have been estimated in order to reveal the specific contribution of software CCF in the trip failure probability. The results reveal the importance and effectiveness of signal and software diversity as applicable strategies to ameliorate inefficiencies due to software CCF in the reactor trip system (RTS). No significant change has been observed in the rate of RTS failure probability for the basic software CCF greater than 1נ10?4. However, the related FussellVesley has been greater than 0.005, for the lower values. The study concludes that consideration of risk associated with the software based systems is a multi-variant function which requires compromising among them in more precise and comprehensive studies.

WIPP site and vicinity geological field trip. A report of a field trip to the proposed Waste Isolation Pilot Plant project in Southeastern New Mexico, June 16 to 18, 1980

SciTech Connect

The Environmental Evaluation Group is conducting an assessment of the radiological health risks to people from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. As a part of this work, EEG is making an effort to improve the understanding of those geological issues concerning the WIPP site which may affect the radiological consequences of the proposed repository. One of the important geological issues to be resolved is the timing and the nature of the dissolution processes which may have affected the WIPP site. EEG organized a two-day conference of geological scientists, on January 17-18, 1980. On the basis of the January conference and the June field trip, EEG has formed the following conclusions: (1) it has not been clearly established that the site or the surrounding area has been attacked by deep dissolution to render it unsuitable for the nuclear waste pilot repository; (2) the existence of an isolated breccia pipe at the site unaccompanied by a deep dissolution wedge, is a very remote possibility; (3) more specific information about the origin and the nature of the brine reservoirs is needed. An important question that should be resolved is whether each encounter with artesian brine represents a separate pocket or whether these occurrences are interconnected; (4) Anderson has postulated a major tectonic fault or a fracture system at the Basin margin along the San Simon Swale; (5) the area in the northern part of the WIPP site, identified from geophysical and bore hole data as the disturbed zone, should be further investigated to cleary understand the nature and significance of this structural anomaly; and (6) a major drawback encountered during the discussions of geological issues related to the WIPP site is the absence of published material that brings together all the known information related to a particular issue.

Investigation of main coolant pump trip problem in case of SB LOCA for Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, WWER-440/V230

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract This paper presents the results of thermal-hydraulic calculation of accident scenarios that involve the trip of main coolant pump (MCP) in case of Small break loss of coolant accident (SB LOCA) for WWER-440/V230 units at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP), done in support of the development of Symptom Based Emergency Operating Procedures (SB EOPs) for this plant. The main purpose of these analyses is to show how the different time of MCP switching off results in primary inventory depletion in case of SB LOCA and it is reflect on peak cladding temperature. According to this, the SB LOCA scenario is regarded from the point of view of an inadequate core cooling. Therefore, the primary concern is Critical Safety Function (CSF) Core cooling and Primary inventory. High core residual heat, minimal safety injection flow and other initial conditions challenging the mentioned \\{CSFs\\} are the main particularities of the accepted scenarios. The RELAP5/MOD3.2 computer code has been used to perform the analyses in a WWER-440 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) model. A model of WWER-440 based on Unit 4 of Kozloduy NPP has been developed for the systems thermal-hydraulics code RELAP5/MOD3.2 at the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (INRNE-BAS), Sofia.

Dual Magnetic Separator for TRI$?$P

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The TRI$\\mu$P facility, under construction at KVI, requires the production and separation of short-lived and rare isotopes. Direct reactions, fragmentation and fusion-evaporation reactions in normal and inverse kinematics are foreseen to produce nuclides of interest with a variety of heavy-ion beams from the superconducting cyclotron AGOR. For this purpose, we have designed, constructed and commissioned a versatile magnetic separator that allows efficient injection into an ion catcher, i.e., gas-filled stopper/cooler or thermal ionizer, from which a low energy radioactive beam will be extracted. The separator performance was tested with the production and clean separation of $^{21}$Na ions, where a beam purity of 99.5% could be achieved. For fusion-evaporation products, some of the features of its operation as a gas-filled recoil separator were tested.

Janice Mueller writes that the Gleevec challenge is the latest controversy facing India since its implementation of substantially enhanced patent protection for pharmaceuticals. ...

I traveled to Guatemala City to discuss host country and US Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission interest in an AID/Washington sponsored integrated utility efficiency initiative and to participate in a cogeneration conference. Discussions were held with USAID/Regional Office for Central America Panama (ROCAP), USAID/Guatemala City, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), the Empresa Electrica de Guatemala, and several members of the private sector regarding interest and the appropriateness of the proposed efficiency initiative. I then traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica to participate in a small scale hydro assessment study with a National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) engineer for a newly formed generation and transmission consortium. Data were gathered both on member cooperative annual, seasonal and diurnal energy demand, as well as engineering data for the site analyses. Meetings were held with the cooperative members; USAID/San Jose; and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mines to inform them of our progress.

(Perform quantum chemistry calculations on element 104 using existing computer programs): Foreign trip report, June 1, 1988--May 10, 1989

SciTech Connect

Electron ionization energies and parameters for the atomic radii of elements 104 and 105 are discussed. Values for these properties have not been proposed before. The results are expected to provide part of the basis for the calculation of certain chemical properties of elements 104 and 105. Chemical properties of elements 104 and 105 are difficult to determine experimentally because of the short half-lives and low production rates of these elements. A fully numerical method for the solution of the Schrodinger equation of quantum mechanics is discussed. Fully numerical methods are capable of yielding more accurate results than the method that was used to obtain the ionization energies mentioned above. Compared to other fully numerical methods, the method discussed here requires less computation time and it does not have the mathematical singularities that occur in other such methods. Energy research and development projects at the Gesamthochschule Kassel, Federal Republic of Germany are summarized. These projects involve consultation, wind and solar energy production, storage and distribution, hydroelectricity production, the production of biogas, the design of fuel cells, technology transfer, and the political aspects of energy production and distribution. 12 refs.

(Fluidized bed combustion of high-ash Indian coals): Foreign trip report, January 5, 1988--March 16, 1988

SciTech Connect

The foreign research assignment at BHEL, Trichy, was undertaken to participate in the ongoing USAID/BHEL joint program in fluidized bed combustion (FBC). As part of this program, an experimental FBC research test facility has been designed, erected and commissioned at BHEL, Trichy, to conduct experiments on the combustion of high-ash Indian coals and coal washery rejects. The data will be used to optimize the design and to select the operational parameters for large scale industrial and utility FBC boilers. ORNL has been providing technical assistance to BHEL since the initiation of the project in November 1983. The US team visited at 10 MW(e) FBC boiler fired with coal washery rejects at the Tata Iron and Steel Company (supplied by BHEL). The tour was very informative and gave the US team a good first-hand perspective of the Indian experience and concerns with FBC technology.

Fuel Efficient Stoves for Darfur Camps of Internally DisplacedPersons - Report of Field Trip to North and South Darfur, Nov. 16 -Dec.17, 2005

SciTech Connect

Approximately 2.2 million internally displaced persons (''IDPs'') in Darfur are living in dense camps scattered in arid areas with low fuelwood productivity. Unsustainable harvesting of fuelwood by the IDPs has created ever increasing zones of denudation, that now (in November 2005) have reached several kilometers from the camp boundaries. Leaving the safety of the camps to fetch fuelwood from farther and farther away imposes great risk and hardship on the IDP women. Three different metal fuel efficient stove (''FES'') designs were tested in Darfur IDP camps for their suitability to substantially reduce the fuelwood needs of IDPs. The mud-and-dung ''ITDG'' stoves being promoted under the current FES program were also examined and tested. A modified design of the ITDG mud-and-dung stove, ''Avi'', was developed, built and tested. Systematic informal surveys of IDP households were undertaken in North and South Darfur to understand the household parameters related to family size, food, fuel, cooking habits, cooking pots, expenditure on fuel, and preferences related to alternative ways to spend time/money if fuel could be saved. Surveys found that a significant fraction of families are missing meals for lack of fuel (50% in South Darfur, and 90% in the North Darfur camps visited by the mission). About 60% of women in South Darfur, and about 90% of women in North Darfur camps purchase fuelwood. Selling some of the food rations to purchase fuel to cook meals was significant (40%) in South Darfur and has become common (80%) in North Darfur. The LBNL mission found that two of the metal stoves and the mud-and-dung Avi can significantly reduce fuelwood consumption using the same fuel, pot, cooking methods, and food ingredients used by Darfur IDPs. The most suitable design for Darfur conditions would be a modified ''Tara'' stove. With training of the cooks in tending the fire, this stove can save 50% fuel for the IDPs. The stove costs less than $10 (US) to produce in Darfur, and saves fuelwood worth $160 annually at local market prices. For programmatic and administrative reasons, the LBNL mission do not recommend a mud-and-dung stove, for which control of quality and dimensional accuracy is expensive and cumbersome to administer, particularly in a rapid large rollout effort. A light metal stove, on the other hand, can be rapidly produced in large numbers locally in Darfur, with good quality control exercised on the material and dimensions of the stoves right at the workshop where it is produced. LBNL mission also recommends immediate trials of 50 Tara stoves in a pilot technical rollout, 500 Tara stoves in a pilot social rollout, in parallel with a technical effort to modify the Tara design to make it better suited for Darfur camp conditions. The mission also recommends a program for manufacturing, disseminating the metal stoves, and educating the IDPs in fuel-efficient cooking practices. Monitoring of the stove quality, dissemination effort and training should be an integral part of the program, with systematic summaries planned with 10,000, 50,000 and 100,000 stoves have been disseminated. In the above pilot rollouts as well as in the final implementation, it is important to continue to pay attention to training of the cooks in tending the cooking fire in the stoves, and offer continued social reinforcement to this training (e.g., through periodic competitions to cook normal meals with the least fuelwood use.)
