''Solar Resource Knowledge Management'' will be a new task under the International Energy Agency's Solar Heating and Cooling Programme. The task development has involved researchers from Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Canada, the U.S. that have been engaged in the use of satellite imagery to develop solar resource maps and datasets around the world. The task will address three major areas: (1) ''Benchmarking'' of satellite-based solar resource methods so that resource information derived from approaches developed in one country or based on a specific satellite can be quantitatively intercompared with methods from other countries using different satellites, as well as with ground data; (2) Data archiving and dissemination procedures, especially focusing on access to the data by end users; and (3) basic R&D for improving the reliability and usability of the data, and for examining new types of products important to the solar industry, such as solar resource forecasts.

4 - Quantization of Knowledge

In this chapter, we introduce an analytical framework for constructing new modules of knowledge. This analytical foundation is then used for evaluating the quantity of knowledge and later a chain of procedures to quantify parameters of knowledge. Knowledge is acquired by a series of logical steps that rest on prior knowledge, and it extends the embedded knowledge as logical and deterministic deductive processes, such as connectivity, inference building, derivation, extension, and theorem proving. Typically, these processes are immune to time and place. The derived knowledge thus gains the status of being as stable and becomes itself a basis of new knowledge. We present the tools for the convoluting “force” of the verb function upon noun objects or “molecular knowledge objects.” The term convoluting conveys how the different verb functions and noun objects “behave” differently depending on the context and environment of the interaction between various objects. This type behavior object exists in other disciplines, such as chemistry, biology, and even molecules of water as glacier ice or as superheated steam.

A solar collector is disclosed which is tiltable about a horizontal axis so as to vary the angle at which solar radiation is received by the collector. The solar collector, which uses air as the heat transfer medium, has connected to it a pair of fixed, well-insulated air transfer passages which penetrate through into the interior of the collector at the lateral sides thereof aligned with the horizontal axis about which the collector is pivoted. The air transfer passages are insulated and are gasketed to the sides of the collector so as to improve the efficiency of the solar energy system by avoiding losses of heat from the heat transfer fluid during transfer of the fluid from the collector to the space being heated.

The prospect of studying the solar energy generation process directly by observing the solar neutrino radiation has been discussed for many years. The main difficulty with this approach is that the sun emits predominantly low energy neutrinos, and detectors for observing low fluxes of low energy neutrinos have not been developed. However, experimental techniques have been developed for observing neutrinos, and one can foresee that in the near future these techniques will be improved sufficiently in sensitivity to observe solar neutrinos. At the present several experiments are being designed and hopefully will be operating in the next year or so. We will discuss an experiment based upon a neutrino capture reaction that is the inverse of the electron-capture radioactive decay of argon-37. The method depends upon exposing a large volume of a chlorine compound, removing the radioactive argon-37 and observing the characteristic decay in a small low-level counter.

Thermodynamics offers a conceptual entry into the domain of knowledge. The behavior of biological and life-form knowledge centric objects or \\{KCOs\\} tend to be probabilistic because their decision-making becomes individualistic, time, and situation dependent. Such variations are accommodated in the equations for kenergy and kentropy by suitable constants that traditionally relate energy and entropy in thermodynamics. These constants are initially “borrowed” from thermodynamics and then the equations are “modeled” after the classic equations in electrical engineering, yet again modified to fit into the science of knowledge. As it is seen in this chapter, the traditional physical sciences start to buckle under stress and psyche and emotions of humanist \\{KCOs\\} and the so-called constants start to become coefficients. These constants are not constants at all in the knowledge domain, but time- and nature-dependent (psychological and emotional) coefficients and attributes of humanist type KCOs. The equations that served as models start to show uncertainties generally associated with quantum mechanics. The methodologies in knowledge sciences converge into a discipline in its own right.

Reasoning about quantum knowledge

We construct a formal framework for investigating epistemic and temporal notions in the context of distributed quantum computation. While we rely on structures developed earlier, we stress that our notion of quantum knowledge makes sense more generally in any agent-based model for distributed quantum systems. Several arguments are given to support our view that an agent's possibility relation should not be based on the reduced density matrix, but rather on local classical states and local quantum operations. In this way, we are able to analyse distributed primitives such as superdense coding and teleportation, obtaining interesting conclusions as to how the knowledge of individual agents evolves. We show explicitly that the knowledge transfer in teleportation is essentially classical, in that eventually, the receiving agent knows that its state is equal to the initial state of the sender. The relevant epistemic statements for teleportation deal with this correlation rather than with the actual quantum state, which is unknown throughout the protocol.

Solar Neutrinos

Experimental work with solar neutrinos has illuminated the properties of neutrinos and tested models of how the sun produces its energy. Three experiments continue to take data, and at least seven are in various stages of planning or construction. In this review, the current experimental status is summarized, and future directions explored with a focus on the effects of a non-zero theta-13 and the interesting possibility of directly testing the luminosity constraint. Such a confrontation at the few-percent level would provide a prediction of the solar irradiance tens of thousands of years in the future for comparison with the present-day irradiance. A model-independent analysis of existing low-energy data shows good agreement between the neutrino and electromagnetic luminosities at the +/- 20 % level.

The disclosure is a solar collector consisting of glass rods enclosed in a housing and mounted vertically on a roof or other elevated place to gather solar rays. The collector is fixed, with no tracking device or other moving parts. The glass rods are 6 mm or smaller in diameter, and there can be several thousand, depending on the sizes of the rods and collector. The upper ends of the rods are inclined at an angle of thirty degrees from horizontal, with the inclined surfaces occupying a plane which faces south so as to obtain maximum exposure to the winter sun. Solar rays striking the inclined ends of the rods are refracted into the rods. The rays travel down through the rods, with a predominantly parallel path of propagation being established by repeated reflections off the inside walls of the rods. The rays are emitted from the lower perpendicular ends of the rods as parallel rays of incoherent light which are directed into beam concentrators.

The human thought and machine processes are rendered (almost) seamless. The genius of amorphous creativity and steps of integrated creativity programmed into knowledge machines are bonded together. The machine processes are made subservient to human thought process, and machine will serve well in the structured segment of the unstructured creativity and hasten the overall processes of creativity. The synergy is enhanced by a new flavor of artificial creativity by hopping between skillful thought (at computer interfaces) and computational rigor (of knowledgeware).The basic methodology for the flow of knowledge is borrowed from thermodynamics and from electrical systems. The noise control principles are taken from signal processing where the signal contamination is examined by power spectrum analyzers (and Fourier analysis), and the reason for the contamination is systematically tracked and eliminated or canceled out to insignificant levels. The basis of transfer functions in the flow of signals through transmission media is driven deeper to derive the transformation matrices for the flow of information and knowledge through social media.

Solar neutrinos and the solar composition problem

Standard solar models (SSM) are facing nowadays a new puzzle: the solar composition problem. New determinations of solar metal abundances lead SSM calculations to conflict with helioseismological measurements, showing discrepancies that extend from the convection zone to the solar core and can not be easily assigned to deficiencies in the modelling of the solar convection zone. We present updated solar neutrino fluxes and uncertainties for two SSM with high (old) and low (new) solar metallicity determinations. The uncertainties in iron and carbon abundances are the largest contribution to the uncertainties of the solar neutrino fluxes. The uncertainty on the ^14N+p -> ^15O+g rate is the largest of the non-composition uncertainties to the CNO neutrino fluxes. We propose an independent method to help identify which SSM is the correct one. Present neutrino data can not distinguish the solar neutrino predictions of both models but ongoing measurements can help to solve the puzzle.

The field of this invention is solar collectors, and more particularly, the invention pertains to a flat plate collector that employs high performance thin films. The solar collector of this invention overcomes several problems in this field, such as excessive hardware, cost and reliability, and other prior art drawbacks outlined in the specification. In the preferred form, the apparatus features a substantially rigid planar frame (14). A thin film window (42) is bonded to one planar side of the frame. An absorber (24) of laminate construction is comprised of two thin film layers (24a, 24b) that are sealed perimetrically. The layers (24a, 24b) define a fluid-tight planar envelope (24c) of large surface area to volume through which a heat transfer fluid flows. Absorber (24) is bonded to the other planar side of the frame. The thin film construction of the absorber assures substantially full envelope wetting and thus good efficiency. The window and absorber films stress the frame adding to the overall strength of the collector.

A reflective shutter rotates within a skylight housing in such a fashion as to control solar energy thereby providing a combination of heating, lighting, and ventilation. The skylight housing has three faces: a glazed southern face, a glazed northern face, and an open downwardly oriented face to the interior of the structure. Counter-weighted pivot arms support the shutter at either end causing the center of rotation to pass through the center of gravity. The shutter has three basic positions: In the first position, during the winter day, the shutter closes off the northern face, allowing solar energy to enter directly into the supporting structure providing heat gain and daylighting. In the second position, during the winter night, the shutter closes off the open face to the interior, providing insulation between the structure and the skylight housing. In the third position, during the non-heating season, the shutter closes off the southern face blocking unwanted heat gain but allowing diffuse northern light to penetrate for daylighting. In this last position, a means is provided for ventilating by natural convection. The apparatus can be operated either manually or by motor.

A solar energy water heating unit is provided which heats water from a swimming pool by passing the water through a series of spiral hoses mounted on a supporting surface. The supporting surface is mounted on a platform raised from the ground and is cone-shaped to allow for at least a portion of each hose line to be exposed to the sun at all times of the day. The spiral hose lines are mounted in spiral grooves provided on the supporting surface. A pump pumps the water from the swimming pool to the inlet of the hose lines, which inlet is adjacent the lowermost edge of the supporting surface so that the water is always pumped upwardly to the outlet end of the hose lines adjacent the apex of the supporting surface.

This invention consists of a planar photovoltaic concentrator module for producing an electrical signal from incident solar radiation which includes an electrically insulating housing having a front wall, an opposing back wall and a hollow interior. A solar cell having electrical terminals is positioned within the interior of the housing. A planar conductor is connected with a terminal of the solar cell of the same polarity. A lens forming the front wall of the housing is operable to direct solar radiation incident to the lens into the interior of the housing. A refractive optical element in contact with the solar cell and facing the lens receives the solar radiation directed into the interior of the housing by the lens and directs the solar radiation to the solar cell to cause the solar cell to generate an electrical signal. An electrically conductive planar member is positioned in the housing to rest on the housing back wall in supporting relation with the solar cell terminal of opposite polarity. The planar member is operable to dissipate heat radiated by the solar cell as the solar cell generates an electrical signal and further forms a solar cell conductor connected with the solar cell terminal to permit the electrical signal generated by the solar cell to be measured between the planar member and the conductor.

Tandem Polymer Solar Cells Featuring a Spectrally Matched Low-Bandgap Polymer  

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Tandem solar cells provide an effective way to harvest a broader spectrum of solar radiation by combining two or more solar cells with different absorption bands. However, for polymer solar cells, the performance of tandem devices lags behind single-layer solar cells mainly due to the lack of a suitable low-bandgap polymer. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient single and tandem polymer solar cells featuring a low-bandgap conjugated polymer (PBDTT-DPP: bandgap, {approx}1.44 eV). A single-layer device based on the polymer provides a power conversion efficiency of {approx}6%. When the polymer is applied to tandem solar cells, a power conversion efficiency of 8.62% is achieved, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest certified efficiency for a polymer solar cell to date.

Apparatus is disclosed for converting solar energy to more useful forms, I.E., thermal and electrical energy. Such apparatus includes a photoelectric transducer (E.G., an array of photovoltaic cells), means for concentrating solar energy on the transducer, and means for circulating a liquid between the transducer and the solar energy concentrator. The spectral properties of the liquid are such that the liquid functions as a bandpass filter, transmitting solar energy to which the transducer is responsive and absorbing solar energy to which the transducer is non-responsive. The transmitted solar energy is converted to electrical energy by the transducer, and the absorbed solar energy is converted to heat by the liquid. Preferably, the liquid is circulated through a container which, in the vicinity of the transducer, is constructed so as to provide optical gain to the system and to integrate incident solar energy for the purpose of eliminating ''hot spots'' which could overheat, and thereby damage, the transducer.

In this chapter, a typical American university is chosen as a model for the quantitative analysis for the flow of knowledge in a reasonably well-defined academic setting. Knowledge flow assumes quantifiable patterns and much like the flow and retention of rain water over a given terrain of land; the quality (of teaching) and quantity (number of credit hours) of knowledge retained by students is estimated on a qualitative and quantitative basis. The model presented in this chapter is entirely generic. It can be applied in any center of learning and during any period of training, residency in limited time frame, or even to the evolution of species as they gain survival skills, and build their knowledge potential to survive, another generation, calamity, meteor fall, a catastrophic disaster, or a global nuclear fall-out. Though the probability of outcome is not accurately known, it is still bounded by confidence limits.

A photovoltaic solar concentrator is disclosed with one or more transverse-junction solar cells (also termed point contact solar cells) and a lens located above each solar cell to concentrate sunlight onto the solar cell to generate electricity. Piezoelectric actuators tilt or translate each lens to track the sun using a feedback-control circuit which senses the electricity generated by one or more of the solar cells. The piezoelectric actuators can be coupled through a displacement-multiplier linkage to provide an increased range of movement of each lens. Each lens in the solar concentrator can be supported on a frame (also termed a tilt plate) having three legs, with the movement of the legs being controlled by the piezoelectric actuators.

Solar Radiation Estimated Through Mesoscale Atmospheric Modeling over Northeast Brazil

The use of renewable energy sources like solar wind and biomass is rapidly increasing in recent years with solar radiation as a particularly abundant energy source over Northeast Brazil. A proper quantitative knowledge of the incoming solar radiation is of great importance for energy planning in Brazil serving as basis for developing future projects of photovoltaic power plants and solar energy exploitation. This work presents a methodology for mapping the incoming solar radiation at ground level for Northeast Brazil using a mesoscale atmospheric model (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System—RAMS) calibrated and validated using data from the network of automatic surface stations from the State Foundation for Meteorology and Water Resources from Ceará (Fundação Cearense de Meteorologia e Recursos Hídricos? FUNCEME). The results showed that the model exhibits systematic errors overestimating surface radiation but that after the proper statistical corrections using a relationship between the model?predicted cloud fraction the ground?level observed solar radiation and the incoming solar radiation estimated at the top of the atmosphere a correlation of 0.92 with a confidence interval of 13.5? W / m 2 is found for monthly data. Using this methodology we found an estimate for annual average incoming solar radiation over Ceará of 215? W / m 2 (maximum in October: 260? W / m 2 ).

We asked him five (okay, six) questions to learn more about him and his role. 1. When was your first Solar Decathlon? I first had the idea to launch a student-centered solar competition in 1999. I had been working at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for 10 years conducting research on solar photovoltaic systems. We had developed highly reliable solar panels, but few people trusted them or thought they looked appealing on rooftops. Organizational knowledge and the Intranet

The Intranet phenomenon has been driven by the push of technology standards and the pull of organizational need to (1) communicate across geographic, organizational and functional barriers, and (2) collaborate among sites and with suppliers and customers. The objective of this study is to generate a theoretical framework for the interaction between organizational knowledge and the Intranet. The contribution of this paper is 4-fold. First, we generate a theoretical framework using the paradigm model of grounded theory. We show interactions between the Intranet and three organizational knowledge strategies taking into account drivers, the context, and intervening conditions. Second, previous research on organizational knowledge creation theory is incorporated into the framework. Third, the framework forms the basis for future empirical research on the business value of the Intranet. Finally, the study raises implications for IS developers, IS departments, management and researchers.

An innovative technique operating only by means of water and solar energy, is desiccant cooling. The principle is evaporative cooling with the introduction of a dehumidification unit, the desiccant wheel to control the humidity levels. The regeneration of the desiccant wheel requires a preheated airstream. A solar installation is a very interesting option for providing the preheated airstream. The solar argon abundance cannot be directly derived by spectroscopic observations of the solar photosphere. The solar Ar abundance is evaluated from solar wind measurements, nucleosynthetic arguments, observations of B stars, HII regions, planetary nebulae, and noble gas abundances measured in Jupiter's atmosphere. These data lead to a recommended argon abundance of N(Ar) = 91,200(+/-)23,700 (on a scale where Si = 10^6 atoms). The recommended abundance for the solar photosphere (on a scale where log N(H) = 12) is A(Ar)photo = 6.50(+/-)0.10, and taking element settling into account, the solar system (protosolar) abundance is A(Ar)solsys = 6.57(+/-)0.10.

The project will identify promising locations for photovoltaic installations and create a roadmap for commercial and residential system developers. The roadmap, published as the Solar Developers Guide to Philadelphia, will be used to promote and attract solar energy investment. Philadelphia’s long-term goal for solar energy is to fully utilize the potential of solar energy to safely, reliably, and cost-effectively displace the use of energy generated by fossil fuels. To achieve its solar energy goals, the City of Philadelphia must add large commercial scale (> 500 kW) solar installations to its ongoing efforts on the smaller scale (we note that a new 1 MW PV installation will be installed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard by the end of 2008).

Several investigations of FGK stars in the solar neighborhood have suggested that thin-disk stars with an iron abundance similar to the Sun appear to show higher abundances of other elements, such as silicon, titanium, or nickel. Offsets could arise if the samples contain stars with ages, mean galactocentric distances, or kinematics, that differ on average from the solar values. They could also arise due to systematic errors in the abundance determinations, if the samples contain stars that are different from the Sun regarding their atmospheric parameters. We re-examine this issue by studying a sample of 80 nearby stars with solar-like colors and luminosities. Among these solar "analogs", the objects with solar iron abundances exhibit solar abundances of carbon, silicon, calcium, titanium and nickel.

A solar thermal powered aircraft powered by heat energy from the sun. A heat engine, such as a Stirling engine, is carried by the aircraft body for producing power for a propulsion mechanism, such as a propeller. The heat engine has a thermal battery in thermal contact with it so that heat is supplied from the thermal battery. A solar concentrator, such as reflective parabolic trough, is movably connected to an optically transparent section of the aircraft body for receiving and concentrating solar energy from within the aircraft. Concentrated solar energy is collected by a heat collection and transport conduit, and heat transported to the thermal battery. A solar tracker includes a heliostat for determining optimal alignment with the sun, and a drive motor actuating the solar concentrator into optimal alignment with the sun based on a determination by the heliostat.

City of Grand Rapids Building Solar Roof Demonstration

Grand Rapids, Michigan is striving to reduce it environmental footprint. The municipal government organization has established environmental sustainability policies with the goal of securing 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. This report describes the process by which the City of Grand Rapids evaluated, selected and installed solar panels on the Water/Environmental Services Building. The solar panels are the first to be placed on a municipal building. Its new power monitoring system provides output data to assess energy efficiency and utilization. It is expected to generate enough clean solar energy to power 25 percent of the building. The benefit to the public includes the economic savings from reduced operational costs for the building; an improved environmentally sustainable area in which to live and work; and increased knowledge about the use of solar energy. It will serve as a model for future energy saving applications.

This paper analyzes the behaviour of an absorption chiller lithium bromide installation fed by a field of flat-plate solar collectors and condensed by swimming pool water. A method of calculation in a variable regime is developed in terms of the obtained experimental results. Starting from the meteorological variables of a clear summer day and from the project data (collector normalization curve, collector and installation mass), the minimum solar radiation level necessary to initiate the process, I[sub min], and the instantaneous available solar energy, Q[sub u] + W[sub 1] is determined. The solar radiation threshold, I[sub min], necessary to obtain the process temperature, t[sub ave], in each instant, is obtained by adding to the corrected Klein radiation threshold, I[sub k,c], the heat capacity effects of the collector, HCE[sub CO], and of the installation, HCE[sub ins], as well as the losses of heat of the pipes to the surroundings, Q[sub 1]. The instantaneous available solar energy, available useful heat, in addition to the wind collector losses to the surroundings, Q[sub u] + W[sub 1], is the difference, in each instant, between the radiation, I[sub g1T], and the radiation threshold, I[sub min].The integration during the day of the instantaneous available solar energy allows us to calculate the daily available function, H[sub T]. The value of H[sub T], measured in the swimming-pool water condensation installation reached 6.92 MJ/(m[sup 2] day ). The calculated values of H[sub T] for a conventional installation condensed by tower water, or air, have been 6.35 and 0.56 MJ/(m[sup 2] day). respectively.

The engineering of solar power applications, such as photovoltaic energy (PV) or thermal solar energy requires the knowledge of the solar resource available for the solar energy system. This solar resource is generally obtained from datasets, and is either measured by ground-stations, through the use of pyranometers, or by satellites. The solar irradiation data are generally not free, and their cost can be high, in particular if high temporal resolution is required, such as hourly data. In this work, we present an alternative method to provide free hourly global solar tilted irradiation data for the whole European territory through a web platform. The method that we have developed generates solar irradiation data from a combination of clear-sky simulations and weather conditions data. The results are publicly available for free through Soweda, a Web interface. Treatment of Solar Generation in Electric Utility Resource Planning

Today's utility planners have a different market and economic context than their predecessors, including planning for the growth of renewable energy. State and federal support policies, solar photovoltaic (PV) price declines, and the introduction of new business models for solar PV 'ownership' are leading to increasing interest in solar technologies (especially PV); however, solar introduces myriad new variables into the utility resource planning decision. Most, but not all, utility planners have less experience analyzing solar than conventional generation as part of capacity planning, portfolio evaluation, and resource procurement decisions. To begin to build this knowledge, utility staff expressed interest in one effort: utility exchanges regarding data, methods, challenges, and solutions for incorporating solar in the planning process. Through interviews and a questionnaire, this report aims to begin this exchange of information and capture utility-provided information about: 1) how various utilities approach long-range resource planning; 2) methods and tools utilities use to conduct resource planning; and, 3) how solar technologies are considered in the resource planning process.
