Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract This paper aims to test weak-form efficiency in the top five Latin American stock markets, using two approaches. Firstly, by evaluating the normality of the series using basic statistics, then by using the Jarque-Bera test and Chi-Square goodness of fit test, contrasting the RW1 (Runs test and BDS test), RW2 (Alexander filters with genetic algorithms) and RW3 (Ljung-Box test and Bartlett Interval) of the random walk (RW) of the assets. It was found that the five major Latin American economies studied have experienced a change from non-efficiency to market efficiency in recent years, according to the following chronological order: Mexico (2007), Brazil (2008), Colombia (2008), Chile (2011) and Peru (2012).

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Previous national and international evidence show that firms going public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) underprice. In this research we investigate whether IPO underpricing differs between family firms and non-family firms. We employ a sample of 59 \\{IPOs\\} conducted in Spain over the period 1994 to 2012. We find that both family or non-family firms exhibit significant underpricing, being significantly lower in the case of family firms. Results do not suggest any linkage between underpricing and IPO activity in the Spanish market.

Wind effects on a stretched membrane heliostat

SciTech Connect

Wind effects on stretched membrane heliostat were investigated in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The membrane response was measured at stow and representative operational conditions. It was found that both at the stow and operational conditions the mean response was much higher than the rms response. At stow conditions the largest response occurred near the leading edge of the membrane, while the rms response was the largest at the membrane center point. For the operational conditions, the largest mean and rms responses were found at the membrane centerpoint. The membrane response was significantly reduced by the membrane focusing induced through the internal underpressure.

Solar heating and hot water system installed at the Senior Citizen Center, Huntsville, Alabama. [Includes engineering drawings

SciTech Connect

Information is provided on the solar energy system installed at the Huntsville Senior Citizen Center. The solar space heating and hot water facility and the project involved in its construction are described in considerable detail and detailed drawings of the complete system and discussions of the planning, the hardware, recommendations, and other pertinent information are included. The facility was designed to provide 85 percent of the hot water and 85 percent of the space heating requirements. Two important factors concerning this project for commercial demonstration are the successful use of silicon oil as a heat transfer fluid and the architecturally aesthetic impact of a large solar energy system as a visual centerpoint. There is no overheat or freeze protection due to the characteristics of the silicon oil and the design of the system. Construction proceeded on schedule with no cost overruns. It is designed to be relatively free of scheduled maintenance, and has experienced practically no problems.

Eye-to-Eye with a Wind Turbine Eye-to-Eye with a Wind Turbine Photo of the Week: Eye-to-Eye with a Wind Turbine August 7, 2013 - 10:35am Addthis At the National Renewables Energy Laboratory (NREL), scientists use the Insight Center Collaboration Room to examine and interact with their data. In this simulation, the room is converted into a virtual wind tunnel, allowing scientists to study the complex, turbulent flow fields around wind turbines. Pictured here, NREL Senior Scientist Kenny Gruchalla examines the velocity field surrounding a wind turbine, using a 3-D model projected onto the center's 16-by-8 foot wall. The simulation helps scientists better understand flow patterns, and further, how turbines can better avoid gearbox failures. System and method for chromatography and electrophoresis using circular optical scanning

DOE Patents (OSTI)

A system and method is disclosed for chromatography and electrophoresis using circular optical scanning. One or more rectangular microchannel plates or radial microchannel plates has a set of analysis channels for insertion of molecular samples. One or more scanning devices repeatedly pass over the analysis channels in one direction at a predetermined rotational velocity and with a predetermined rotational radius. The rotational radius may be dynamically varied so as to monitor the molecular sample at various positions along a analysis channel. Sample loading robots may also be used to input molecular samples into the analysis channels. Radial microchannel plates are built from a substrate whose analysis channels are disposed at a non-parallel angle with respect to each other. A first step in the method accesses either a rectangular or radial microchannel plate, having a set of analysis channels, and second step passes a scanning device repeatedly in one direction over the analysis channels. As a third step, the scanning device is passed over the analysis channels at dynamically varying distances from a centerpoint of the scanning device. As a fourth step, molecular samples are loaded into the analysis channels with a robot.

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract This article provides evidence of the effect the quality of corporate information disclosure has on the market, particularly the share of ownership that have the pension fund adminstrators who have shares in the company, and the level of debt that the companies have. Cross-sectional econometric models and panel data were use to measure and quantify this evidence, found by using information published by Chilean Corporations between 2001-2009. The study shows that, for this sample, information disclosure increases when the pension funds ownership is higher, and decreases when the leverage is higher.

English: Industry does not give attention to the small domestic or professional market of digital technologies for 3D images. What was done on the XX century by using photographic film is not know available to the common people, though the facilities are even better. Some technique developed in Brasil twenty years ago and the use of conventional domestic photo or video cameras allows fot making pictures and films at home by using digital conversions for editing, and two-color goggles. The anaglyphic technique, the same NASA employs to show Mars images to the public, is not employed in Brazil yet. We must analize the reasons for that.

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In this paper, the policy-sensitive imbalances in the health professional markets are discussed. In Spain, the current staffing levels are still the result of unforeseen demographic and socio-economic developments. In some specialties and areas, there are selective shortages which in all likelihood will become more serious in the coming years due to the objective causes analyzed in this text. We propose a gradual increase in the medical schools numerus clausus and in the number of resident's positions, the use of a variety of incentives to attract professionals to specific positions and, particularly, to increase the standing and quality of primary care.

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract This paper presents an estimate of per capita agricultural income in the second half of the Eighteenth century for the Ro de la Plata's region. Based on primary and secondary sources the text makes a reconstruction of the total agricultural output per capita taking into account the two main commodities of regional agricultural structure: foodstuff for the domestic markets and hides leathers for export markets. The results show that farm output as a whole tripled since 1760 to 1800, driven primarily by a significant population growth accompanied by an expansion of the agricultural frontier, and secondly by the production of leather for the Atlantic trade. Finally, the trajectory of the farm output of Buenos Aires and Montevideo along the period was uneven among places, decades and branches of production.

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Research and development into prosthetic materials designed to repair abdominal wall defects has sought to create the ideal prosthesis. Industry has been adopting new designs and new materials and this has generated confusion among surgeons, especially those working in the field of hernia repair. Thus, today's surgeon has a certain obligation to find out about these new existing materials and to acquire in-depth knowledge of the settings in which they can be used. In this study, we develop a classification system for the different prostheses available on the market by correlating their behavior regarding tissue integration with their structure. This classification scheme, which is an updated version of another scheme proposed by us, should enable the surgeon to select the best prosthetic material for a given surgical setting according to its structure.

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Consumers are thought to be rational in their choices. But sometimes their choices comprise intransitivities. Current paper presents a mathematically supported experimental study of consumers intransitive preferences concerning product attributes. We used a personalized experimental design developed on the basis of Q methodology to maintain subjectivity. In our experimental study we are investigating intransitivity occurring in participants preferences during selection between simple, medium complex, and complex products. By the Q method we gain the same number of less important (middle level) attribute dimensions for all participants. The participants task is to make pairwise comparisons of preference between specific realizations of each product group. Since conjoint analysis is based on the measurement and testing of consumer preferences, reassessment of the phenomenon may have impact on marketing research methodology. This research is to test an experimental design whichwith some adjustmentcould be able to measure revealed preferences in a more precise way.
