Circumveiloped by Obscuritads. The nature of interpretation in quantum mechanics, hermeneutic circles and physical reality, with cameos of James Joyce and Jacques Derrida

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The quest for finding the right interpretation of Quantum Mechanics (QM) is as old als QM and still has not ended, and may never end. The question what an interpretation of QM is has hardly ever been raised explicitly, let alone answered. We raise it and answer it. Then the quest for the right interpretation can continue self-consciously, for we then know exactly what we are after. We present a list of minimal requirements that something has to meet in order to qualify as an interpretation of QM. We also raise, as a side issue, the question how the discourse on the interpretation of QM relates to hermeneutics in Continental Philosophy.

Abrupt Climate Change Scenario Technologies Abrupt Climate Change Scenario Technologies Speaker(s): Tina Kaarsberg Date: April 27, 2006 - 12:00pm Location: Bldg. 90 Seminar Host/Point of Contact: Jayant Sathaye This talk examines the potential for several types of technologies that hitherto have not been a focus of U.S. climate technology planning. It was inspired by the latest climate science data and modeling which suggest that an abrupt warming (+10oF in 10 years), is an increasingly plausible scenario. The technologies described in the session rapidly reduce the risk of climate change and increase our ability to respond quickly. All of the technologies also have other public benefits. (Summary follows): For more information about this seminar, please contact: JoAnne Lambert 510.486.4835, or send e-mail to JMLambert@lbl.gov

Effects on Effects on Liquid-Water Path of Thin Stratocumulus Clouds Seoung-Soo Lee (University of Michigan) Joyce E. Penner (University of Michigan) Stephen M. Saleeby (Colorado State University) Motivation International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) reports that thin clouds with liquid-water path (LWP) of ~ 50 g m -2 cover 28 % of the globe. Top of the atmosphere (TOA) and surface (SFC) radiative flux variations become very sensitive to the LWP variation for LWP smaller than ~ 50 g m -2 [Turner et al., 2007]. Sensitivity of the Radiation Variation to the LWP Variation Aerosols modify the LWP and thus aerosol-cloud interactions in thin clouds can play an important role in global radiation budget. The Particle Adventure | What is the world made of? | The naming of quarks

Broader source: All U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office Webpages (Extended Search)

The naming of quarks The naming of quarks The naming of quarks The naming of quarks... ...began when, in 1964, Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig suggested that hundreds of the particles known at the time could be explained as combinations of just three fundamental particles. Gell-Mann chose the name "quarks," pronounced "kworks," for these three particles, a nonsense word used by James Joyce in the novel Finnegan's Wake: "Three quarks for Muster Mark!" In order to make their calculations work, the quarks had to be assigned fractional electrical charges of 2/3 and -1/3. Such charges had never been observed before. Quarks are never observed by themselves, and so initially these quarks were regarded as mathematical fiction. Experiments have since convinced physicists that not only do quarks exist, but there are six of them, not three.

graciosos quarks graciosos quarks Volver Principal ESTOY PERDIDO!!!

Improved Improved Tissue Culture System for Embryogenic Callus Production and Plant Regeneration in Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) Jason N. Burris & David G. J. Mann & Blake L. Joyce & C. Neal Stewart Jr. Published online: 10 October 2009 # Springer Science + Business Media, LLC. 2009 Abstract The increased emphasis on research of dedicated biomass and biofuel crops begs for biotechnology method improvements. For switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), one limitation is inefficient tissue culture and transformation systems. The objectives of this study were to investigate the utility of a new medium described here, LP9, for the production and maintenance of switchgrass callus and its regeneration, which also enables genetic transformation. LP9 medium is not based on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, the basal medium that all published switchgrass transformation has been

The first set of simulations with high humidity (~ 80 %) around the top of the PBL is referred to as WET and the second set with low humidity (~40%) as DRY. Each set of simulations is composed of high- and low-aerosol runs. Table 2 shows comparisons of the simulated LWP to the MODIS-observed LWP. The difference is within ~ 5 % relative to the MODIS LWP, demonstrating that the simulations are reasonably good. The LWP at high aerosol in WET (DRY) is higher

Price Responsive Demand in New York Wholesale Electricity Market using Price Responsive Demand in New York Wholesale Electricity Market using OpenADR Title Price Responsive Demand in New York Wholesale Electricity Market using OpenADR Publication Type Report LBNL Report Number LBNL-5557E Year of Publication 2012 Authors Kim, Joyce Jihyun, and Sila Kiliccote Date Published 06/2012 Publisher LBNL/NYSERDA Keywords commercial, demand response, dynamic pricing, mandatory hourly pricing, open automated demand response, openadr, pilot studies & implementation, price responsive demand Abstract In New York State, the default electricity pricing for large customers is Mandatory Hourly Pricing (MHP), which is charged based on zonal day-ahead market price for energy. With MHP, retail customers can adjust their building load to an economically optimal level according to hourly electricity prices. Yet, many customers seek alternative pricing options such as fixed rates through retail access for their electricity supply. Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) is an XML (eXtensible Markup Language) based information exchange model that communicates price and reliability information. It allows customers to evaluate hourly prices and provide demand response in an automated fashion to minimize electricity costs. This document shows how OpenADR can support MHP and facilitate price responsive demand for large commercial customers in New York City.

Enumerating finite racks, quandles and kei

E-Print Network [OSTI]

A rack of order $n$ is a binary operation $\\rack$ on a set $X$ of cardinality $n$, such that right multiplication is an automorphism. More precisely, $(X,\\rack)$ is a rack provided that the map $x\\mapsto x\\rack y$ is a bijection for all $y\\in X$, and $(x\\rack y)\\rack z=(x\\rack z)\\rack (y\\rack z)$ for all $x,y,z\\in X$. The paper provides upper and lower bounds of the form $2^{cn^2}$ on the number of isomorphism classes of racks of order $n$. Similar results on the number of isomorphism classes of quandles and kei are obtained. The results of the paper are established by first showing how an arbitrary rack is related to its operator group (the permutation group on $X$ generated by the maps $x\\mapsto x\\rack y$ for $y\\in Y$), and then applying some of the theory of permutation groups. The relationship between a rack and its operator group extends results of Joyce and of Ryder; this relationship might be of independent interest.

Test of Sabines reverberation time in ergodic auditoriums within geometrical acoustics

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In room acoustics Sabines formula for the reverberation time as a function of its volume and effective surface absorption is valid in the limit of a perfectly diffuse sound. In the spirit of the general discussion of Joyce [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 5 8 643 (1975)] in the geometrical acoustic limit and as a paradigm of the complex three?dimensional problem here a simple two?dimensional (2?D) room with the shape of a stadium with smooth boundaries is considered. In this system it is known that almost all trajectories are chaotic in the strongest sense of the term namely ergodic mixing and K?complex. Numerical results are reported on the decay law of an impulse sound and on its characteristic reverberation time as a function of room volume (in 2D the stadium surface) and effective surface absorption (in 2D effective perimeter absorption). In the limit of very small absorptions Sabines law is verified with good accuracy. However these results show that larger but still small absorptions lead to a departure from a pure exponential decay. This stems from the existence of finite time correlations that are important at short times.

Automated Demand Response Technologies and Demonstration in New York City

Technologies and Demonstration in New York City Technologies and Demonstration in New York City using OpenADR Title Automated Demand Response Technologies and Demonstration in New York City using OpenADR Publication Type Report LBNL Report Number LBNL-6470E Year of Publication 2013 Authors Kim, Joyce Jihyun, Sila Kiliccote, and Rongxin Yin Date Published 09/2013 Publisher LBNL/NYSERDA Abstract Demand response (DR) - allowing customers to respond to reliability requests and market prices by changing electricity use from their normal consumption pattern - continues to be seen as an attractive means of demand-side management and a fundamental smart-grid improvement that links supply and demand. Since October 2011, the Demand Response Research Center at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority have conducted a demonstration project enabling Automated Demand Response (Auto-DR) in large commercial buildings located in New York City using Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) communication protocols. In particular, this project focuses on demonstrating how OpenADR can automate and simplify interactions between buildings and various stakeholders in New York State including the independent system operator, utilities, retail energy providers, and curtailment service providers. In this paper, we present methods to automate control strategies via building management systems to provide event-driven demand response, price response and demand management based on OpenADR signals. We also present cost control opportunities under day-ahead hourly pricing for large customers and Auto-DR control strategies developed for demonstration buildings. Lastly, we discuss the communication architecture and Auto-DR system designed for the demonstration project to automate price response and DR participation.
