Subsurface data is being collected, organized, and a digital database is being prepared for the project. An ACCESS database and PC-Arcview will be used to manage and interpret the data. All of the four 30 X 60 geologic quadrangles have been scanned to produce a digital surface geologic data base for the Crow Reservation and all are nearing completion. Writing of the map explanations has begun. Field investigations were nearly completed during this quarter; only minor field checks remain. With the help of a student field assistant from the Crow Tribe, the entire project area was inventoried for the presence of valley-fill deposits in the Kootenai Formation. Field inventory has resulted in the identification of nine exposures of thick valley-fill deposits. These appear to represent at least four major westward-trending valley systems. All the channel localities have been measured and described in detail and paleocurrent data has been collected from all but one locality. In addition, two stratigraphic sections were measured in areas where channels are absent.

We report on an exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurement of the basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn{yields}d{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} over the full energy region of the ABC effect, a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the {pi}{pi}-invariant mass spectrum. The measurements, which cover also the transition region to the conventional t-channel {Delta}{Delta} process, were performed with the upgraded WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal the Abashian-Booth-Crowe effect to be uniquely correlated with a Lorentzian energy dependence in the integral cross section. The observables are consistent with a narrow resonance with m=2.37 GeV, {Gamma}{approx_equal}70 MeV and I(J{sup P})=0(3{sup +}) in both pn and {Delta}{Delta} systems. Necessary further tests of the resonance interpretation are discussed.

  19. Preliminary Feasibility Assessment of Geologic Carbon Sequestration Potential for TVA's John Sevier and Kingston Power Plants

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Smith, Ellen D; Saulsbury, Bo

    2008-03-01

This is a preliminary assessment of the potential for geologic carbon sequestration for the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) John Sevier and Kingston power plants. The purpose of this assessment is to make a 'first cut' determination of whether there is sufficient potential for geologic carbon sequestration within 200 miles of the plants for TVA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to proceed with a joint proposal for a larger project with a strong carbon management element. This assessment does not consider alternative technologies for carbon capture, but assumes the existence of a segregated CO{sub 2} stream suitable for sequestration.

I urge the Energy view Task Force and other elements of the Dept of Energy to withhold approval for surveying, designing, permitting and construction (or other activities) related to the construction of a natural gas pipeline across northern Massachusetts for these reasons, among others: National energy policy should be directed toward the development and deployment of energy sources which offer long-term sustainability. By incentivizing extraction and shipment of fossil fuels the proposed pipeline delays pursuit of this goal, and distracts attention from projects with better long-term potential. National action should address long-term re-direction of energy planning, focussing on energy conservation and development of renewable sources. Concentration on short-term solutions delays responsible attention to future economic impacts. Expansion of pipeline and rail transport of fuels should have a lower priority than correction of safety and emission shortcomings in existing facilities. Investment in repair of existing pipelines will reduce leaks, and by increasing the usable delivery volume from current pipelineslines will help meet the forecasted growth of energy demand. Reduction in leaks from current pipelines will also reduce emission of "greenhouse gasses," and improve air quality. The proposed pipeline contradicts and impairs our national goals of preservation and conservation of natural resources. Any "job-creation" justification is short-sighted and disingenuous. No project should be justified on these grounds, absent significant benefits, because employment in an environmentally-destructive and economically-disruptive industry undermines other public benefits. In addition, the impact on permanent employment levels will be less than that of expansion of alternative-energy sources. John Hanold

Subsurface data continues to be collected, organized, and a digital database is being prepared for the project. An ACCESS database and PC-Arcview is being used to manage and interpret the data. Well data and base map data have been successfully imported into Arcview and customized to meet the needs of this project. Log tops and other data from about of the exploration wells in the area have been incorporated into the data base. All of the four 30? X 60? geologic quadrangles have been scanned to produce a digital surface geologic data base for the Crow Reservation and all are nearing completion. Formal technical review prior to publication has been completed for all the quadrangles; Billings, Bridger; Hardin, and Lodge Grass. Final GIS edits are being made before being forwarded to the Bureau?s Publications Department. Field investigations were completed during the third quarter, 1997. One channel has bee traced over a distance of about 60 miles and exhibits definite paleostructural control. An abstract describing this channel has been submitted and accepted for presentation at the Williston Basin Symposium in October, 1998.

    1997-12-31

The 28 June 1992 Landers, California, earthquake of M 7.6 created an impressive record of surface rupture and ground deformation. Fractures extend over a length of more than 80 km including zones of right-lateral shift, steps in the fault zones, fault intersections and vertical changes. Among the vertical changes was the growth of a tectonic ridge described here. In this paper the authors describe the Emerson fault zone and the Tortoise Hill ridge including the relations between the fault zone and the ridge. They present data on the horizontal deformation at several scales associated with activity within the ridge and belt of shear zones and show the differential vertical uplifts. And, they conclude with a discussion of potential models for the observed deformation.

I am completely against this Shale Gas Tennessee Pipeline Northeast Extension through the North Quabbin region of Massachusetts. It could be routed less destructively through existing public rights of way that seem to exist already in the southern parts of the state, which already has a pipeline in place. We don't need it and don't want it up here, where it would ruin a landscape that many of us have worked hard to preserve. Sincerely, John Woolsey

  17. Valley filled sand stones In a kootenai formation on the Crow Indian Reservation South Central Montana: Quarterly technical report, January 1, 1997--March 31, 1997

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Lopex, D.A.

    1997-04-04

Field investigation of the Kootenai valley-fill sandstones was begun in the first quarter. About one half of the outcrop belt was inventoried for occurrences of channel sandstone before heavy snows came to the area. Five exposures of valley-fill sandstone have been located, of these two are 15 meters (50 feet) or greater in thickness and have excellent porosity and permeability. These will be measured and studied in detail during the next field season (1997). No further field work was possible during the second and third quarters because of snow cover. Subsurface data is being collected, organized, and a digital database is being prepared for the project. Geographix petroleum software will probably be used to manage and manipulate the data. Regional subsurface cross sections are being constructed for correlation purposes. All of the four 30 X 60 geologic quadrangles, the Billings, Bridger, Hardin, and Lodge Grass, have been scanned to produce a digital surface geologic data base for the Crow Reservation. These maps are currently being proofed and edited for accuracy. A four-day oil and gas training seminar for Crow Tribal members was completed and was quite successful. The purpose was to enable tribal members and employees to understand and evaluate potential exploration prospects and offers that may result from the completion of this research project.

    1992-01-01

Crowley's Ridge is a 320 km long topographic ridge that extends from Thebes, Illinois to Helena, Arkansas. The ridge has been interpreted as an erosional remnant formed during Quaternary incision of the ancestral Mississippi and Ohio rivers; however, the Reelfoot Rift COCORP line identified a down-to-the-west fault bounding the western margin of Crowley's Ridge south of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Subsequent Mini-Sosie seismic reflection profiles confirmed the COCORP data and identified additional faults beneath other margins of the ridge. In each case the faults lie beneath the base of the ridge scarp. The Mini-Sosie data did not resolve the uppermost 150 m and so it was not possible to determine if the faults displace the near-surface Claiborne Group (middle Eocene). A shotgun source seismic reflection survey was subsequently conducted to image the uppermost 250 m across the faulted margins. The shotgun survey across the western margin of the ridge south of Jonesboro reveals displaced reflectors as shallow as 30 m depth. Claiborne Group strata are displaced approximately 6 m and it appears that some of the topographic relief of Crowley's Ridge at this location is due to post middle Eocene fault displacement. Based on the reflection data, the authors suggest that Crowley's Ridge is tectonic in origin.

  6. QER- Comment of John Woolsey 2

    Broader source: Energy.gov [DOE]

Hello Ms. Wayland--- I have three comments regarding the development of energy infrastructure in the United States: 1) NATIVE, NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES SHOULD NOT BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT IN LARGE QUANTITIES. Small or limited amounts could be permissible, but not in large, ongoing quantities since we will obviously need it for our own use. We have been given a reprieve in that we have discovered new ways to make the most of what we have; let us not squander it through exports. If other countries wish to sell energy to us, that is their call. 2) NEITHER PUBLIC FUNDS NOR PUBLIC EMINENT DOMAIN POWERS SHOULD BE USED TO CONSTRUCT TRANSMISSION FACILITIES ON BEHALF OF PRIVATE ENERGY COMPANIES WISHING TO EXPORT NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES. 3) NEW ENERGY TRANSMISSION FACILITIES SHOULD BE ROUTED ALONG EXISTING RIGHTS-OF-WAY OR ALONG EXISTING PUBLIC USE CORRIDORS AND NOT THROUGH LESS DEVELOPED, RURAL OR WILDERNESS AREAS. Small and rural communities should not be taken advantage of merely because the real estate is less expensive. Just as the public would not tolerate a transmission corridor through a national park, neither is it beneficial to disfigure small towns and rural landscapes with utility rights-of-way. State parks and large, undivided tracts of conservation land also serve the public interest, and will continue to do so long after the transmitted energy has run out. Sincerely, John M Woolsey
