Free Energy of D_n Quiver Chern-Simons Theories

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We apply the matrix model of Kapustin, Willett and Yaakov to compute the free energy of N=3 Chern-Simons matter theories with D_n quivers in the large N limit. We conjecture a general expression for the free energy that is explicitly invariant under Seiberg duality and show that it can be interpreted as a sum over certain graphs known as signed graphs. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, this leads to a prediction for the volume of certain tri-Sasaki Einstein manifolds. We also study the unfolding procedure, which relates these D_n quivers to A_{2n-5} quivers. Furthermore, we consider the addition of massive fundamental flavor fields, verifying that integrating these out decreases the free energy in accordance with the F-theorem.

Precision Measurement of the Neutron Twist-3 Matrix Element dn2: Probing Color Forces

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Double-spin asymmetries and absolute cross sections were measured at large Bjorken x (0.25 lte x lte 0.90), in both the deep-inelastic and resonance regions, by scattering longitudinally polarized electrons at beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV from a transversely and longitudinally polarized 3He target. In this dedicated experiment, the spin structure function g2 on 3He was determined with precision at large x, and the neutron twist-three matrix element dn2 was measured at ?Q2? of 3.21 and 4.32 GeV2/c2, with an absolute precision of about 10?5. Our results are found to be in agreement with lattice QCD calculations and resolve the disagreement found with previous data at ?Q2?= 5 GeV2/c2. Combining dn2 and a newly extracted twist-four matrix element, fn2, the average neutron color electric and magnetic forces were extracted and found to be of opposite sign and about 60 MeV/fm in magnitude.

Computed oscillator strengths and energy levels for Fe III, Fe IV, Fe V, and Fe VI with calculated wavelengths and wavelengths derived from established data

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Calculated weighted oscillator strengths are tabulated for spectral lines of Fe III, Fe IV, Fe V, and Fe VI. The lines belong to transition arrays 3d6-3d54p and 3d54s-3d54p in Fe III, 3d5-3d44p and 3d44s-3d44p in Fe IV, 3d4-3d34p and 3d34s-3d34p in Fe V, and 3d3-3d24p and 3d24s-3d24p in Fe VI. For the calculations, Slater parameters are optimized on the basis of minimizing the discrepancies between observed and computed wavelengths. Configuration interaction was included among the 3dn, 3dn?14s, 3dn?24s2, 3dn?14d, and 3dn?15s even configurations and among the 3dn?14p, 3dn?24s4p, and 3dn?15p odd configurations, with 3p53dn+1 added for Fe VI. Calculated wavelengths are compared with observational data, and the compositions of energy levels are listed. This completes a series of similar computations for these complex configurations covering Fe I to Fe VI.

Delayed neutron measurements of 232Th neutron-induced fission

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Delayed neutrons (DN) play an important role in nuclear reactor physics. Innovative critical reactor studies bring to light the need of new DN yields data. For the thorium fuel cycle DN data for 232Th is needed. In the literature, significant discrepancies were observed for energies below 4MeV and data are dispersed around 14MeV. Therefore DN absolute yields from 232Th fission have been determined at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility in Braunschweig. A consistent set of data has been measured for incident neutrons with energies of 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10 and 16MeV.

Growing Cutting-edge X-ray Optics

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Ever imagined that an Xbox controller could help open a window into a world spanning just one billionth of a meter? Brookhaven Lab's Ray Conley grows cutting-edge optics called multilayer Laue lenses (MLL) one atomic layer at a time to focus high-energy x-rays to within a single nanometer. To achieve this focusing feat, Ray uses a massive, custom-built atomic deposition device, an array of computers, and a trusty Xbox controller. These lenses will be deployed at the Lab's National Synchrotron Light Source II, due to begin shining super-bright light on pressing scientific puzzles in 2015

Simplicial Multivalued Maps and the Witness Complex for Dynamical Analysis of Time Series

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Topology based analysis of time-series data from dynamical systems is powerful: it potentially allows for computer-based proofs of the existence of various classes of regular and chaotic invariant sets for high-dimensional dynamics. Standard methods are based on a cubical discretization of the dynamics, and use the time series to construct an outer approximation of the underlying dynamical system. The resulting multivalued map can be used to compute the Conley index of isolated invariant sets of cubes. In this paper we introduce a discretization that uses---by contrast---a simplicial complex constructed from a witness-landmark relationship. The goal is to obtain a natural discretization that is more tightly connected with the invariant density of the time series itself. The time-ordering of the data also directly leads to a map on this simplicial complex that we call the witness map. We obtain conditions under which this witness map gives an outer approximation of the dynamics, and thus can be used to compute the Conley index of isolated invariant sets. The method is illustrated by a simple example using data from the classical H\\'enon map.

Teleportation of arbitrary $n$-qudit state with multipartite entanglement

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We propose a protocol ${\\cal D}_n$ for faithfully teleporting an arbitrary $n$-qudit state with the tensor product state (TPS) of $n$ generalized Bell states (GBSs) as the quantum channel. We also put forward explicit protocol ${\\cal D}'_n$ and ${\\cal D}''_n$ for faithfully teleporting an arbitrary $n$-qudit state with two classes of $2n$-qudit GESs as the quantum channel, where the GESs are a kind of genuine entangled states we construct and can not be reducible to the TPS of $n$ GBSs.

The electric dipole moment of the neutron from 2+1 flavor lattice QCD

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We compute the electric dipole moment d_n of the neutron from a fully dynamical simulation of lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of clover fermions and nonvanishing theta term. The latter is rotated into the pseudoscalar density in the fermionic action using the axial anomaly. To make the action real, the vacuum angle theta is taken to be purely imaginary. The physical value of d_n is obtained by analytic continuation. We find d_n = -3.8(2)(9) x 10^{-16} [theta e cm], which, when combined with the experimental limit on d_n, leads to the upper bound theta < 7.6 x 10^{-11}.

Detecting and evaluating climate change effect on frequency analysis of wind speed

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The purpose of this study is to detect an existing trend in wind speed and to evaluate the effect of climate change on frequency analysis of wind speed in Iran. Twenty-two stations with a length of records higher than 50 years have been selected. Five statistical methods that were used to detect the trends are Mann-Kendall, Spearman-Conley, cumulative deviation, autocorrelation coefficient and regression analysis. It is revealed that 11 stations have a positive or a negative trend while the rest has no trend. Climate change leads to a lack of homogeneity in a number of stations. Therefore, it is impossible to use frequency analysis for those stations. One appropriate approach is dividing the stations into two smaller parts, and for each part, frequency analysis could be taken if the part is homogenous.

A DWARF NOVA IN THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER M13

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Dwarf novae (DNe) in globular clusters (GCs) seem to be rare with only 13 detections in the 157 known Galactic GCs. We report the identification of a new DN in M13, the 14th DN identified in a GC to date. Using the 2 m Faulkes Telescope North, we conducted a search for stars in M13 that show variability over a year (2005-2006) on timescales of days and months. This led to the detection of one DN showing several outbursts. A Chandra X-ray source is coincident with this DN and shows both a spectrum and variability consistent with that expected from a DN, thus supporting the identification. We searched for a counterpart in Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys/Wide Field Camera archived images and found at least 11 candidates, of which we could characterize only the 7 brightest, including one with a 3{sigma} H{alpha} excess and a faint blue star. The detection of one DN when more could have been expected likely indicates that our knowledge of the global Galactic population of cataclysmic variables is too limited. The proportion of DNe may be lower than found in catalogs, or they may have a much smaller mean duty cycle ({approx}1%) as proposed by some population synthesis models and recent observations in the field.
