Market Market Luciana Juvenal y Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Ivan Petrella z Birkbeck, University of London 26 June 2012 Abstract The run-up in oil prices since 2004 coincided with growing investment in commod- ity markets and increased price comovement among di¤erent commodities. We assess whether speculation in the oil market played a role in driving this salient empirical pattern. We identify oil shocks from a large dataset using a factor-augmented vector autoregressive (FAVAR) model. This method is motivated by the fact that a small scale VAR is not infomationally su¢ cient to identify the shocks. The main results are as follows: (i) While global demand shocks account for the largest share of oil price ‡ uc- tuations, speculative shocks are the second most important driver. (ii) The comovement between oil prices and the prices of other commodities is mainly explained by global

While the peak crude oil production loss from Hurricane Katrina was similar to 2004's Hurricane Ivan and even less than Hurricane Dennis earlier this year, the pace of restoration is expected to be much more similar to Hurricane Ivan than any of the other recent hurricanes. For example, while the peak daily loss in crude oil production during Hurricane Dennis was slightly more than suffered following Hurricane Katrina, within a week of the peak loss, crude oil production following Hurricane Dennis was back to normal while it will likely be months before crude oil production is back to normal following Hurricane Katrina. New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) prices increased initially following the hurricane. Since early September, product prices generally have declined (increasing on September 19 with news of Tropical Storm Rita approaching the Gulf of Mexico).

6 (next release 2:00 p.m. on September 23) 6 (next release 2:00 p.m. on September 23) Natural gas spot and futures price movements were mixed for the week, as Hurricane Ivan pushed prices upward in Gulf of Mexico production areas and in consuming markets east of the Mississippi, but had little effect on prices elsewhere. Likewise, on the NYMEX, the price for the near-month contract (for October delivery) got a significant, brief boost from Ivan, while the November contract price was nearly flat for the week and out-month contracts fell in price. At yesterday's price of $5.16 per MMBtu, the Henry Hub spot price reflected a gain of 47 cents or 10 percent on the week. The October futures contract price increased $0.193 per MMBtu, or about 4 percent, on the week to settle yesterday at $4.824. EIA

Fluctuating voltage signals on the potential taps of the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) 5.0 Tesla MHD Superconducting Dipole Magnet have been observed during MHD power generation at the U-25 B Facility at the High Temperature Institute (IVAN), Moscow, U.S.S.R. The voltage fluctuations are analyzed with special emphasis on magnet stability. Various other thermodynamic and electrical parameters of the U-25 B flow train have been recorded and statistical correlations between these signals and the signals observed at the magnet terminals are described.

I do have a grasp of the concept of expansion. What I do not understand is and it bothers me: It is said that the outer galaxies of our observable universe are expanding between them faster than closer ones. First I am correct in saying that? Second, if I interpreted what I read correctly, would an observer at the edge of our observable universe, looking towards our galaxy see the opposing situation: an observable universe that is reducing in expansion, with that other observer's outer galaxies progressively expanding less (as this would be the galaxies closer to us)? Replies: Hi Ivan -- If you were in that far-away galaxy, you would make the same observation about galaxies near the milky way: that the farther-away galaxies are moving away from you faster than galaxies closer to you.

For the week (Wednesday-Wednesday, October 6-13), the price at the Henry Hub decreased 61 cents or about 10 percent to $5.39 per MMBtu. Prices in production areas along the Gulf Coast and Texas generally fell between 40 and 75 cents per MMBtu, while Midcontinent price declines were less than 36 cents per MMBtu. The price of the NYMEX futures contract for November delivery ended the week at $6.851, a decline of roughly 19 cents per MMBtu or slightly more than 2.8 percent since last

For the week (Wednesday-Wednesday), prices at the Henry Hub increased 43 cents, or about 8 percent, to $5.59 per MMBtu. Yesterday (September 22), the price of the NYMEX futures contract for October delivery at the Henry Hub settled at $5.629 per MMBtu, increasing roughly 81 cents or about 17 percent since last Wednesday (September 15). Natural gas in storage was 2,942 Bcf as of September 17, which is 7 percent above the 5-year average. The spot price for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil increased $4.58 per barrel, or about 10 percent, on the

Widener, Kevin Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Category: Instruments Two W-band ARM Cloud Radars (WACR) have been developed for the SGP and the ARM Mobile Facility (AMF) by ProSensing. The SGP WACR was successfully deployed in the same shelter as the MMCR in 2005. It is currently collecting co-polarization and cross-polarization spectral moments (reflectivity, Doppler velocity, and spectral width) along with spectra data. The AMF WACR will be deployed with the AMF in Niamey, Niger early in 2006. We will present ingested WACR data formats available from the ARM Archive, a selected comparisons of WACR and MMCR data at SGP, and data from

This document is the final report for the Sandia National Laboratory funded Student Fellowship position at New Mexico State University (NMSU) from 2008 to 2010. Ivan Mecimore, the PhD student in Electrical Engineering at NMSU, was conducting research into image and video processing techniques to identify features and correlations within images without requiring the decoding of the data compression. Such an analysis technique would operate on the encoded bit stream, potentially saving considerable processing time when operating on a platform that has limited computational resources. Unfortunately, the student has elected in mid-year not to continue with his research or the fellowship position. The student is unavailable to provide any details of his research for inclusion in this final report. As such, this final report serves solely to document the information provided in the previous end of year summary.

Oil and Natural Gas Supply Oil and Natural Gas Supply Energy Infrastructure NETL's Energy Infrastructure and Security Research Group (EISRG) has a key supporting role in emergency preparedness and response. The EISRG develops high-level analytical visualizations that are used to study critical U.S. energy infrastructures and their inter-relationships during natural and manmade emergencies. By deploying resources and providing vital information in a timely manner, EISRG improves the ability of government agencies and the energy sector to prevent, prepare for, and respond to hazards, emergencies, natural disasters, or any other threat to the nation's energy supply. NETL coordinated and provided information on an ongoing basis during every major landfall event of the 2005 hurricane season , including Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, as well as during Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Ivan in 2004. NETL also has participated in exercises to prepare for events with varying degrees of impact, such as pipeline disruptions, local power outages, and transportation interruptions, such as the 2005 Powder River Basin rail service suspension, which resulted in curtailment of coal deliveries to major customers over a six-month period.

For the week (Wednesday-Wednesday), prices at the Henry Hub increased 43 cents, or about 8 percent, to $5.59 per MMBtu. Yesterday (September 22), the price of the NYMEX futures contract for October delivery at the Henry Hub settled at $5.629 per MMBtu, increasing roughly 81 cents or about 17 percent since last Wednesday (September 15). Natural gas in storage was 2,942 Bcf as of September 17, which is 7 percent above the 5-year average. The spot price for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil increased $4.58 per barrel, or about 10 percent, on the week to $48.41 per barrel or $8.347 per MMBtu.

14 (next release 2:00 p.m. on October 21) 14 (next release 2:00 p.m. on October 21) Natural gas spot prices and the near-month futures price showed a week-to-week decline as the pace of storage injections indicate adequate supplies, despite continued shut-in production in the Gulf of Mexico owing to Hurricane Ivan's impact. For the week (Wednesday-Wednesday, October 6-13), the price at the Henry Hub decreased 61 cents or about 10 percent to $5.39 per MMBtu. Prices in production areas along the Gulf Coast and Texas generally fell between 40 and 75 cents per MMBtu, while Midcontinent price declines were less than 36 cents per MMBtu. The price of the NYMEX futures contract for November delivery ended the week at $6.851, a decline of roughly 19 cents per MMBtu or slightly more than 2.8 percent since last Wednesday. Natural gas in storage increased to 3,159 Bcf as of Friday, October 8, which is about 7.2 percent above the 5-year average. The spot price for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil increased $1.88 per barrel, or 3.6 percent, since last Wednesday to trade yesterday (October 13) at $53.86 per barrel or $9.29 per MMBtu.

PNR is intrinsically sensitive to interfacial magnetization; bulk magnetometry is not. Difference between the spin up and down neutron reflectivities normalized by their sum (spin asymmetry) is shown in the figure (symbols). Anticipated spin asymmetry for magnetization (> 10G) assumed to be due to LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces inferred from bulk magnetometry is not consistent with the neutron data. Hurricane Katrina Wind Investigation Report

This investigation of roof damage caused by Hurricane Katrina is a joint effort of the Roofing Industry Committee on Weather Issues, Inc. (RICOWI) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory/U.S. Department of Energy (ORNL/DOE). The Wind Investigation Program (WIP) was initiated in 1996. Hurricane damage that met the criteria of a major windstorm event did not materialize until Hurricanes Charley and Ivan occurred in August 2004. Hurricane Katrina presented a third opportunity for a wind damage investigation in August 29, 2005. The major objectives of the WIP are as follows: (1) to investigate the field performance of roofing assemblies after major wind events; (2) to factually describe roofing assembly performance and modes of failure; and (3) to formally report results of the investigations and damage modes for substantial wind speeds The goal of the WIP is to perform unbiased, detailed investigations by credible personnel from the roofing industry, the insurance industry, and academia. Data from these investigations will, it is hoped, lead to overall improvement in roofing products, systems, roofing application, and durability and a reduction in losses, which may lead to lower overall costs to the public. This report documents the results of an extensive and well-planned investigative effort. The following program changes were implemented as a result of the lessons learned during the Hurricane Charley and Ivan investigations: (1) A logistics team was deployed to damage areas immediately following landfall; (2) Aerial surveillance--imperative to target wind damage areas--was conducted; (3) Investigation teams were in place within 8 days; (4) Teams collected more detailed data; and (5) Teams took improved photographs and completed more detailed photo logs. Participating associations reviewed the results and lessons learned from the previous investigations and many have taken the following actions: (1) Moved forward with recommendations for new installation procedures; (2) Updated and improved application guidelines and manuals from associations and manufacturers; (3) Launched certified product installer programs; and (4) Submitted building code changes to improve product installation. Estimated wind speeds at the damage locations came from simulated hurricane models prepared by Applied Research Associates of Raleigh, North Carolina. A dynamic hurricane wind field model was calibrated to actual wind speeds measured at 12 inland and offshore stations. The maximum estimated peak gust wind speeds in Katrina were in the 120-130 mph range. Hurricane Katrina made landfall near Grand Isle, Louisiana, and traveled almost due north across the city of New Orleans. Hurricane winds hammered the coastline from Houma, Louisiana, to Pensacola, Florida. The severe flooding problems in New Orleans made it almost impossible for the investigating teams to function inside the city. Thus the WIP investigations were all conducted in areas east of the city. The six teams covered the coastal areas from Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, on the west to Pascagoula, Mississippi, on the east. Six teams involving a total of 25 persons documented damage to both low slope and steep slope roofing systems. The teams collected specific information on each building examined, including type of structure (use or occupancy), wall construction, roof type, roof slope, building dimensions, roof deck, insulation, construction, and method of roof attachment. In addition, the teams noted terrain exposure and the estimated wind speeds at the building site from the Katrina wind speed map. With each team member assigned a specific duty, they described the damage in detail and illustrated important features with numerous color photos. Where possible, the points of damage initiation were identified and damage propagation described. Because the wind speeds in Katrina at landfall, where the investigations took place, were less than code-specified design speeds, one would expect roof damage to be minimal. The generated HF was monitored by following the etching rate of a 300 nm thick SiO2 layer, grown on both sides of a silicon wafer substrate, as a function of the immersion time in the electrolyte at 50 °C. It was found that the formation of HF starts after 70 h of exposure time and occurs following several different phases. The amount of generated HF was calculated using an empirical formula correlating the etching rate to the temperature. Combining the results of the HF formation with literature data, a simplified mechanism for the formation of the HF involving LiPF6 degradation, and a simplified catalytical reaction pathway of the formed HF and silicon dioxide are proposed to describe the kinetics of HF formation.

Loads on Tie-Down Systems for Floating Drilling Rigs during Hurricane Conditions

Tie-down systems are used to fasten drilling rigs to the deck of offshore structures during harsh environmental conditions such as hurricanes. During Hurricane Ivan (2004) and Katrina (2005), a number of offshore structures were moved and several tie-down systems were damaged. In the present study, the reaction force and connection capacity of tie-down systems for a TLP and SPAR are investigated. The environmental conditions are taken from the API Bulletin 2INT-MET which has been updated after several major storms during 2004-2005. The hydrodynamic coefficients of the TLP and SPAR are obtained using a 3D diffraction/radiation panel method. The motions of the TLP and SPAR are then simulated in the time domain by using the hull-mooring-riser coupled dynamic analysis tool CHARM3D. Based on the simulated motion and acceleration time series, the inertial and gravity loads on derrick and skid base footing are calculated. In addition to the inertial-gravity loads, wind forces exerted on the derrick are also calculated. All the external forces and resultant hull motions are simulated for 100-year, 200-year and 1000-year storms to observe the derrick structural integrity with increasing environmental intensity. Various environmental headings are also considered to find the maximum reaction forces. In the present method, the phase differences between gravity-inertia forces and wind forces are taken into consideration to obtain more realistic loads on derrick and skid base footings. This research shows that the maximum and minimum load values are appreciably higher for the SPAR. In addition, the direction of external forces is also important to determine maximum reaction forces on footings. The capacities of the clamps in slip, bolt tension, and bolt shear can be also analyzed using the resultant data to provide guidance on appropriate design values.

Extreme wave height estimation for ocean engineering applications in the Gulf of Mexico

Recent hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico (e.g., Ivan, Dennis, Katrina, Rita and Ike) were observed to develop wave conditions that were near or exceeded the predicted 100-year conditions. As a result, many offshore facilities, as well as coastal infrastructure, which were designed to withstand the 100-year condition, were damaged. New estimates of extreme conditions, which incorporate recently observed maxima, are needed to provide better guidelines for design of coastal and offshore structures. Berek et al. (2007) have used modeled data to develop new criteria, but these estimates can be very sensitive to the data and to the statistical methods used in the development. Berek's estimates also do not cover the entire Gulf of Mexico. We have developed updated estimates of the 100-year extreme wave conditions for the entire Gulf of Mexico using a more comprehensive approach. First, the applicability of standard parametric wind models was examined and appropriate adjustments to the Rankine vortex model were developed to reduce the wind field errors during hurricane conditions. The adjusted winds reduced the error by up to 25 percent compared to the original Rankine vortex model. To obtain reliable wave data, merged wind fields were generated using the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 project modeled wind data for background wind and the parametric wind model for hurricane conditions. Next, the SWAN wave model was used for the 51-year period from 1958 to 2008 along with multiple statistical methods (Gumbel, Weibull and GEV-Generalized Extreme Value distribution). The effect of the recent hurricane season (2004-2008) shows that maximum 100-year wave height values and their distribution changes. A resampling technique (bootstrap) is used to evaluate and select the optimum statistical method to estimate more appropriate extreme wave conditions.

NUCLEOSYNTHESIS AND THE INHOMOGENEOUS CHEMICAL EVOLUTION OF THE CARINA DWARF GALAXY

The detailed abundances of 23 chemical elements in nine bright red giant branch stars in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy are presented based on high-resolution spectra gathered at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Magellan telescopes. A spherical model atmospheres analysis is applied using standard methods (local thermodynamic equilibrium and plane-parallel radiative transfer) to spectra ranging from 380 to 680 nm. Stellar parameters are found to be consistent between photometric and spectroscopic analyses, both at moderate and high resolution. The stars in this analysis range in metallicity from -2.9 Car-612, seems to have formed in a pocket enhanced in SN Ia/II products. This latter star provides the first direct link between the formation of stars with enhanced SN Ia/II ratios in dwarf galaxies to those found in the outer Galactic halo (Ivans et al.). Another important result is the potential evidence for SN II driven winds. We show that the very metal-poor stars in Carina have not been enhanced in asymptotic giant branch or SN Ia products, and therefore their very low ratios of [Sr/Ba] suggests the loss of contributions from the early SNe II. Low ratios of [Na/Fe], [Mn/Fe], and [Cr/Fe] in two of these stars support this scenario, with additional evidence from the low [Zn/Fe] upper limit for one star. It is interesting that the chemistry of the metal-poor stars in Carina is not similar to those in the Galaxy, most of the other dwarf spheroidal galaxies, or the ultra faint dwarfs, and suggests that Carina may be at the critical mass where some chemical enrichments are lost through SN II driven winds.

Raman microscopy and reflectance Fourier transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to analyze electrodes recovered from cycled Li/LixTiyMn1-yO2 (y=0,0.11) cells containing the 0.5mol/kg LiTFSI in P13FSI RTIL electrolyte. [TFSI=bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide .] Raman and FTIR spectra of cycled LixMnO2 cathodes showed many distinct bands that can be attributed to both the electrolyte and electrode decomposition products. The thickness of the amorphous porous layer on the LixMnO2 cathode increased during cycling. The surface degradation of LixMnO2 and precipitation of electrolyte decomposition products contributed to the film growth. Improved cycling behavior was observed in cells containing LixTi0.11Mn0.89O2 , yet Raman spectroscopy also showed possible surface degradation. The FTIR spectra of cycled LixMnO2 and LixTi0.11Mn0.89O2 cathodes displayed bands characteristic for LiSO3CF3 and Li2NSO2CF3 , which originate from the reaction of the TFSI anion with traces of water present in the cell.

Calculation of Extreme Wave Loads on Coastal Highway Bridges

Coastal bridges are exposed to severe wave, current and wind forces during a hurricane. Most coastal bridges are not designed to resist wave loads in such extreme situations, and there are no existing analytical methods to calculate wave loads on coastal highway bridges. This study focuses on developing a new scheme to estimate the extreme wave loads on bridges for designing purpose. In order to do this, a 2D wave velocity potential model (2D Model) is set up for the deterministic analysis of wave force on bridge decks. 2D Model is a linear wave model, which has the capability of calculating wave velocity potential components in time domain based on wave parameters such as wave height, wave period and water depth, and complex structural geometries. 2D Model has Laplace equation as general equation. The free surface boundary, incoming and outgoing wave boundary conditions are linearized, decomposed first, and then solved by the finite difference method. Maximum wave forces results calculated by the linear 2D Model are compared with results from CFD software Flow3D that is using Navier Stokes theory up to the 5th order; and 2D Model is validated by comparing results with experiment data. A case study is conducted for calculating extreme wave forces on I-10 Bridge across Escambia Bay, Florida during Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.SWAN model is adapted to investigate the parameters of wave heights and wave periods around bridge sites. SWAN model has the capability of predicting or hindcasting significant wave heights and wave periods as long as the domain and input parameters are given. The predicted significant wave heights are compared with measurements by Buoy Station 42039 and 42040 nearest to Escambia Bay. A new prediction equation of maximum uplift wave forces on bridge decks is developed in terms of wave height, wave period, water depth, bridge width, water clearance and over top water load. To develop the equations, the relationship is investigated between maximum uplift wave forces and wave parameters, water clearance, green water effects and bridge width. 2D Model is used for up to 1886 cases with difference parameters. Flow3D model is adopted to determine coefficients of water clearance and green water effects, which cannot be calculated by 2D Model.

Numerical prediction of mobile offshore drilling unit drift during hurricanes

Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina, and Rita tracked through a high-density corridor of the oil and gas infrastructures in the Gulf of Mexico. Extreme winds and large waves exceeding the 100-year design criteria of the MODUs during these hurricanes, caused the failure of mooring lines to a number of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs) in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the damage MODUs undertook during these severe hurricanes, drifting MODUs might impose a great danger to other critical elements of the oil and gas industry. Drifting MODUs may potentially collide with fixed or floating platforms and transportation hubs or rupture pipelines by dragging anchors over the seabed. Therefore, it is desirable to understand the physics of the drift of a MODU under the impact of severe wind, wave, and current and have the capabilities to predict the trajectory of a MODU that is drifting. In this thesis, a numerical program, named DRIFT, is developed for predicting the trajectory of drifting MODUs given met-ocean conditions (wind, current, and wave) and the characteristics of the MODU. To verify DRIFT, the predicted drift of two typical MODUs is compared with the corresponding measured trajectory recorded by Global Positioning System (GPS). To explore the feasibility and accuracy of predicting the trajectory of a drifting MODU based on real-time or hindcast met-ocean conditions and limited knowledge of the condition of the drift, this study employed a simplified equation describing only the horizontal (surge, sway, and yaw) motions of a MODU under the impact of steady wind, current, and wave forces. The simplified hydrodynamic model neglects the first- and second-order oscillatory wave forces, unsteady wind forces, wave drift damping, and the effects of body oscillation on the steady wind and current forces. It was assumed that the net effects of the oscillatory forces on the steady motion are insignificant. Two types of MODU drift predictions are compared with the corresponding measured trajectories: 1) MODU drift prediction with 30-minute corrections of the trajectory (every 30 minutes the simulation of the drift starts from the measured trajectory), and 2) continuous MODU drift prediction without correction.

PICASSO: A GENERAL INTERACTIVE GRAPHICS MODELING PROGRAM.

This report is intended to serve as a user's manual for PICASSO. The detailed description of the concepts involved and the methods used in implementing those concepts will be treated in a subsequent paper and are incorporated in the Ph.D. thesis of one of the authors. The program evolved from earlier work on a graphics program for printed circuit board design which had a fixed library of elements. The need for a dynamic graphics program (i.e., one which allows the creation of new elements as required) soon became obvious, and the generality of such a program for mathematical modeling was a major factor in the development of PICASSO. It was thought that the present stage of development of this modeling program had reached a point that a report such as this would be useful in creating a broader interest in the field. However, work continues to further generalize the program into such areas as computer animation, 3-D display and modeling, and a more general interface to available ''analysis'' routines, such as the available compilers and interpreters. It should be emphasized that the program is continually changing as new ideas and applications arise. For example, in order to create a modeling system which is complete in some sense, PICASSO was designed explicitly to interface with the CDC analysis program MIMIC. The next step, already under investigation, is to allow for user-defined output templates to specify,the form of the output of a model. This feature, along with the capability for multiple definitions of an element, will allow for several types of analysis to be done on a single model. Another innovation being studied is the provision for ''robot'' commands, with which the user may define a sequence of. commands to be carried out on demand, in much the same way as mechanical ''robots'' are programmed. For this reason there will usually be several versions of PICASSO available, one of which is relatively ''bug-free''. The authors wish to gratefully acknowledge support from the Math and.
