Broader source: All U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office Webpages (Extended Search)

IPM IPM IPM Description and Overview IPM is a portable profiling infrastructure which provide a high level report on the execution of a parallel job. IPM reports hardware counters data, MPI function timings, and memory usage. It provides a low overhead means to generate scaling studies or performance data for ERCAP submissions. When you run a job using the IPM module you will get a performance summary (see below) to stdout as well as a web accessible summary of all your IPM jobs. The two main objectives of IPM are ease-of-use and scalability in performance analysis. Usage % module load ipm On HPC architectures that support shared libraries that's all you need to do. Once the module is loaded you can run as you normally and get a performance profile once the job has successfully completed. You do not

PERFORMANCE OF THE RHIC IPM.

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Four ionization beam profile monitors (IPM's) are in RHIC to measure vertical and horizontal profiles in the two rings. Each IPM collects and measures the distribution of electrons in the beamline resulting from residual gas ionization during bunch passage. The IPM's performed well during the 1999 commissioning run and early in the 2000 run. However as the bunch intensity increased there was a beam-induced ringing that increased in amplitude until it saturated the amplifiers and made the IPM's unusable. Near the end of the run the cause of the ringing was found and one IPM was fixed. At the start of the 2001 run all four IPM have EM1 shielding installed.

Italian hybrid and fission reactors scenario analysis

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Italy is a country where a long tradition of studies both in the fission and fusion field is consolidated; nevertheless a strong public opinion concerned with the destination of the Spent Nuclear Fuel hinders the development of nuclear power. The possibility to a severe reduction of the NSF mass generated from a fleet of nuclear reactors employing an hypothetical fusionfission hybrid reactor has been investigated in the Italian framework. The possibility to produce nuclear fuel for the fission nuclear reactors with the hybrid reactor was analyzed too.

Flexible approach to the Italian cogeneration market

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Demand for energy is growing in Italy under new regulations issued by the Italian government in 1991 and 1992. While the national electrical authority, ENEL, is in the process of being privatized, independent power producers (IPPs) and several companies using large amounts of energy in their production processes have been active in setting up cogeneration and combined-cycle plants based purely on economics. In order to minimize emissions and make best use of fuel energy, the law commonly known as CIP 6/92 states that ENEL will grant a premium rate for electric power handled to the national grid from plants having an annual `energetic index` above 0.6, i.e., an efficiency higher than 60% measured over a one-year period. In order to benefit from the high rates granted by the law, it is necessary to build very efficient plants. Very high reliability is also required so the plan can operate at full load the year around, with only short stops for planned maintenance. This paper describes the activities of the major manufacturers of turbines in Italy.

Alienation in Italian cities. Social network fragmentation from collective data

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We study the structure of a social network of strong ties (trust network) investigating its property of connectedness versus fragmentation. To this purpose we analyse an extensive set of census data, about marrying or having children with immigrants, collected by Italian national statistical institute for all Italian municipalities from 2001 to 2011. Not using neither obtaining personal local information but only average ones, our method fully complies with privacy and confidentiality. Our findings show that large cities display the behaviour of highly fragmented trust networks where individuals face possible phenomena of alienation. Smaller cities and villages instead behave like fully connected social systems with a rich tie structure, where isolation is rare or completely absent. While confirming classical sociological theories on alienation in large urban areas our approach provides a quantitative method to test them and a predictive tool for policy makers.

Heavy metal balances of an Italian soil as affected by sewage sludge and Bordeaux mixture applications

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Applications of sewage sludge and Bordeaux mixture (Bm) (a mixture of copper sulfate and lime) add heavy metals to the soil. At an experimental farm in the Cremona district (Italy), the authors measured current heavy metal contents in soil and their removal via harvested products. They also measured heavy metal adsorption by soil from this farm. With these data, projections were made of the long-term development of heavy metal (Cd, Cu, and Zn) contents in soil, crop removal, and leaching at different application rates of sewage sludge and Bm. These projections were compared with existing quality standards of the European Union (EU) and Italy with regard to soil and groundwater. The calculations reveal that the permitted annual application rates of sewage sludge and Bm are likely to result in exceedance of groundwater and soil standards. Sewage sludge applications, complying with the Italian legal limits, may pose problems for Cd, Cu, and Zn within 30, 70, and 100 yr, respectively. Furthermore, severe Cu pollution of integrated and especially organic (Bm only) vineyards is unavoidable with the currently allowed application rates of Bm. The results suggest that the current Italian soil protection policy as well as the EU policy are not conducive of a sustainable heavy metal management in agroecosystems.

Investment efficiency in the Italian water service industry: a benchmarking study using data envelopment analysis (DEA)

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The paper presents a benchmarking study of the Italian water service industry using data envelopment analysis. Sample investigated in the study includes 38 optimal territorial areas (ATOs), where the ATO is a well circumscribed geographical area where the provision of integrated water services is considered efficient. Results of DEA implementation show that the average pure technical and scale efficiency are situated at 92.62% and 93.91%, respectively, while the average technical efficiencies score is 87.61%. Findings also support the idea that there might be an optimal size of ATOs which is associated to higher efficiency scores and that agglomeration economies are important in the provision of water integrated services. Large scale operations and ATO size are associated to lower efficiency rates.

The doping effect of Italian feed-in tariffs on the PV market

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract In less than six years, Italy has become one of the leading markets for PV power plants and one of the countries in the world with the largest number of installations and installed peak power. Such a quick and large growth is due to a series of feed-in tariff schemes that have been uncapped until 2012. As a matter of fact, any size or any number of PV power plants could be installed during a period of three years. Since the feed-in tariffs are not paid by national taxes but are charged on the electricity bills, Italian energy users are now due to pay each year a surcharge of 9billioneuros on their energy bills. This paper aims at discussing this development by highlighting the benefits but also some significant drawbacks that the application of uncontrolled feed-in tariffs has produced.

Real Estate market, energy rating and cost. Reflections about an Italian case study

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The Directive EPBD introduced Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) an energy policy tool. The aim of EPC is to inform building buyer about energy performance (and energy cost) of buildings. They represent a specific energy policy tool to orientate building sector and retail market toward higher energy efficiency building. The Real Estate market was built in different periods, and in each of these periods the building envelope or the heating plant had different kinds of energy performance. Therefore, in real estate, each building-period has a determinate incidence respect total existing buildings, and they have different energy consumption incidence respect total energy national consumption. The EPBD recast highlight the relation between building elements or technical building system, energy rating and cost-optimal levels of minimum energy performance requirements. In present paper a discussion about Directive's news, Italian EPC and real estate market prospective is presented. Furthermore we proposed a reflection about link between energy cost, energy rating and building property value.

Professional competence, management capabilities and customer satisfaction: the case of the Italian Public Hospital

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The study starts with some remarks concerning the culture and the role of the service management within the Italian Public Hospital (IPH). A first analysis reveals little attention to the development of service and managerial culture. This is characterised by a low presence of functions relative to service coordination, management and control. More particularly, three problematic areas can be identified by focusing respectively on personnel motivation, ability to face uncertainties, modalities of management and control. Therefore, in the diagnosis of the difficulties of a service supply, a single element or problem rarely proves to be the root cause. Generally, we get better results if we analyse problems in terms of a vicious circle in which many different factors influence each other.

Assessment of Cost-optimal Energy Performance Requirements for the Italian Residential Building Stock

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Directive 2010/31/EU establishes that Member States must ensure that minimum energy performance requirements for buildings are set with a view to achieve cost-optimal levels. The paper presents a methodology for identifying the cost-optimal levels for the Italian residential building stock, following the Guidelines accompanying the Commission Delegated Regulation No. 244/2012. The methodology is applied to a reference building of the IEE-TABULA project and considering different energy efficiency measures. The energy performance and the global cost calculations are performed according to UNI/TS 11300 and UNI EN 15459, respectively. A new cost optimisation procedure based on a sequential search-optimisation technique considering discrete options is applied.

Polluted online information? Surfing Italian websites dealing with the topic of waste and

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In the field of health communication, a particularly critical issue is communication to the public of environmental risks, especially on topics for which there is still a high degree of scientific uncertainty regarding risk estimates. One such topic is undoubtedly the impact of waste on people's health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence and characteristics of Italian websites dealing with the topic of waste and health. The keywords 'waste' and 'health' were entered in 2010 in the three most commonly used search engines, and the first five pages were analysed. The selected websites were coded according to the content analysis method. For websites of interest we evaluated the 'page rank'. Out of the 150 occurrences analysed, the number of websites found to deal with this subject was only 19, four of which were of an institutional nature. The majority of websites gave a message of increased health risk associated with the three kinds of waste disposal tackled. As regards visibility, only one of the four institutional websites maintained its position on the first page of the three search engines. We found that institutional health websites have low visibility, despite extensive media coverage of waste and health issues in Italy as a result of the Naples case, which was debated globally. This indicates that public health institutions' web strategies are basically unable to meet people's health information requirements, which could strengthen rival health information providers.

Influence of the topology on the power flux of the Italian high-voltage electrical network

E-Print Network [OSTI]

A model of the Italian 380 kV electrical transmission network has been analyzed under the topological and the functional viewpoints. The DC power flow model used to evaluate the power flux has been solved on the basis of input conditions (injected power - extracted power, line's reactances and the maximum flux capacity of each line) taken from real data. The vulnerability of the network under load conditions has been estimated by evaluating the power flux redistribution along the lines subsequent to line's removal. When the perturbed network cannot sustain a given input--output demand, the maximum power sustainable by the network has been evaluated to optimize the \\texttt{Quality of Service}, defined as the difference between the expected and the effective dispatched power. The functional relevance of the different lines of the network has been classified according to the amount of power that the network must reduce, to keep alive, upon their removal. Results show that topological and functional relevances ar...

Time-of-use pricing and electricity demand response: evidence from a sample of Italian industrial customers

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The introduction of real time pricing in many wholesale market as well as the liberalisation process involving the retail market poses the attention over the measurement of demand response to time differentiated price signals. This paper shows an example of how to estimate elasticities of substitution across time using a sample of Italian industrial customers facing time-of-use (TOU) pricing schemes. The model involves the estimation of a nested constant elasticity of substitution (CES) input demand function, which allows estimating substitutability of electricity usage across hourly intervals within a month and across different months.

What about behaviours in swimming pools? Results of an Italian multicentre study

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract The behaviour of swimming pool users plays an important role in the prevention of chemical, microbial and physical risks associated with these recreational water environments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hygiene-related behaviours and knowledge of users of indoor swimming pools in five Italian cities. A cross-sectional study was carried out using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. The association between specific variables and patterns of behaviours and knowledge was assessed. A total of 4315 questionnaires were analysed. Of all respondents, 41.7% declared they had never read the swimming pool rules; 70.9% take a shower before entering the swimming pool; 13.5% said they urinated at least once in a swimming pool; 93.9% always wear proper footwear; 92.1% know what warts are and 69.3% know what mycosis is. A significant association was found between not reading the pool rules and unsafe behaviours, such as not showering (OR: 1.44, 95% CI 1.251.65), urinating in the pool (OR: 1.70, 95% CI 1.412.03) and not wearing any footwear (OR: 1.24, 95% CI 0.961.62). Male gender was significantly associated with urinating in the swimming pool (OR: 1.45, 95% CI 1.211.74) and not wearing footwear (OR: 1.71, 95% CI 1.322.23), but it showed to be protective against not showering (OR: 0.78, 95% CI 0.680.89). An age ?18years was a risk factor for not reading the pool rules (OR: 2.32, 95% CI 2.052.63), not wearing footwear (OR: 2.16, 95% CI 1.672.82) and not knowing what mycosis (OR: 7.04, 95% CI 5.349.27) and warts (OR: 7.94, 95% CI 6.869.20) are. Results reveal that incorrect behaviours are widespread among swimming pool users and that there is little awareness of the importance of reading pool rules for reducing health risks.

Synthesis of zeolite from Italian coal fly ash: Differences in crystallization temperature using seawater instead of distilled water

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

In this study Italian coal fly ash was converted into several types of zeolite in laboratory experiments with temperatures of crystallization ranging from 35 up to 90 deg. C. Distilled and seawater were used during the hydrothermal synthesis process in separate experiments, after a pre-treatment fusion with NaOH. The results indicate that zeolites could be formed from different kind of Italian coal fly ash at low temperature of crystallization using both distilled and seawater. SEM data and the powder patterns of X-ray diffraction analysis show that faujasite, zeolite ZK-5 and sodalite were synthesized when using both distilled and seawater; zeolite A crystallized only using distilled water. In particular the experiments indicate that the synthesis of zeolite X and zeolite ZK-5 takes place at lower temperatures when using seawater (35 and 45 deg. C, respectively). The formation of sodalite is always competitive with zeolite X which shows a metastable behaviour at higher temperatures (70-90 deg. C). The chemical composition of the fly ash source could be responsible of the differences on the starting time of synthesized zeolite with distilled water, in any case our data show that the formation of specific zeolites takes place always at lower temperatures when using seawater.

Private health care expenditure and quality in Beveridge systems: Cross-regional differences in the Italian NHS

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Private health care expenditure ranges from 15% to 30% of total healthcare spending in OECD countries. The literature suggests that there should be an inverse correlation between quality of public services and private expenditures. The main objective of this study is to explore the association between quality of public healthcare and private expenditures in the Italian Regional Healthcare Systems (RHSs).The institutional framework offered by the Italian NHS allows to investigate on the differences among the regions while controlling for institutional factors. The study uses micro-data from the ISTAT Household Consumption Survey (HCS) and a rich set of regional quality indicators. The results indicate that there is a positive and significant correlation between quality and private spending per capita across regions. The study also points out the strong association between the distribution of private consumption and income. In order to account for the influence of income, the study segmented data in three socio-economic classes and computed cross-regional correlations of \\{RHSs\\} quality and household healthcare expenditure per capita, within each class. No correlation was found between the two variables. These findings are quite surprising and call into question the theory that better quality of public services crowds out private spending, or, at the very least, it undermines the simplistic notions that higher levels of private spending are a direct consequence of poor quality in the public sector. This suggests that policies should avoid to simplistically link private spending with judgements or assessments about the functioning or efficacy of the public system and its organizations.

GIS-based energy-economic model of low temperature geothermal resources: A case study in the Italian Marche region

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

This paper presents a computational procedure designed to derive a regional model of the low temperature geothermal potential and its economic exploitability. The model was applied to the Italian Marche region and developed with the support of a Geographic Information System (GIS), which highlights the spatial dependencies in the distribution of geothermic resources. The Low Temperature Geothermal Energy has already gained attention as a renewable energy resource for domestic heating and represents a growing opportunity for investment. Although it is common practice to conduct an accurate evaluation of the geothermal potential and its exploitability on a site during the construction of a single installation, there is not an established practice or guidelines for estimating this resource over large territories. This information could support an institutions ability to conduct regional energy planning and guide private entrepreneurship to meet new economic opportunities. To address these issues, the main contribution of this work is a model that reduces the distance between the physical knowledge of the territory/environment and economic analysis. The model is based on a useful assessment of low temperature geothermal potential obtained from physical parameters on a regional scale, from which a set of economic indicators are calculated to evaluate the actual economic accessibility to the geothermal energy resource.

The 2007 Research Experiment in Carbon Sequestration (RECS) met at the Montana State University (MSU) and a variety of field sites over the 10-day period of July 29 - Aug 10. This year's group consisted of 17 students from graduate and doctoral programs in the United States and Canada, as well as early career professionals in fields related to carbon mitigation. Appropriately, because greenhouse gas reduction and storage is a global problem, the group included seven international students, from France, Iran, Paraguay, Turkey, Russia and India. Classroom talks featured experts from academia, government, national laboratories, and the private sector, who discussed carbon capture and storage technologies and related policy issues. Then, students traveled to Colstrip, Montana to visit PPL Montana's coal-fired power plant and view the local geology along the Montana/Wyoming border. Finally, students spent several days in the hands-on work at ZERT, using carbon dioxide detection and monitoring equipment. 1 photo.

Swimming pools and health-related behaviours: results of an Italian multicentre study on showering habits among pool users

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Objectives Showering before entering a swimming pool is highly recommended to reduce the risk of biological and chemical contamination. This study evaluated the behaviour of indoor swimming pool users; analysed the variables associated with lack of showering; and assessed awareness of the importance of showering. Study design Cross-sectional study. Methods A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data about users of swimming pools located in five different Italian cities. The association between specific variables and the lack of showering was assessed. Ppool. The main reason given for pre-swim showering was to wash oneself (50.5%); or to get used to the temperature of the water (44.3%); and 5.2% answered for both reasons. Risk factors significantly associated with lack of showering were: female sex (odds ratio (OR) 1.37, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.21.59), age 1417 years (OR 5.09, 95% CI 3.407.64); not reading the swimming pool rules (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.101.41); living in Central Italy (OR 3.3, 95% CI 2.654.1) or Southern Italy (OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.181.55); and previous/current attendance of a swimming course (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.481.97). Conclusions The results revealed low compliance with the rule of showering before entering a swimming pool, and little awareness of the preventive role of showering in the hygienic management of swimming pools. There is a need for targeted educational interventions to inform swimming pool users of the reasons for the importance of showering before entering a pool.

Effects of a temporary HDPE cover on landfill gas emissions: Multiyear evaluation with the static chamber approach at an Italian landfill

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

According to the European Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC and the related Italian Legislation (D. Lgs. No. 36/2003), monitoring and control procedures of landfill gas emissions, migration and external dispersions are clearly requested. These procedures could be particularly interesting in the operational circumstance of implementing a temporary cover, as for instance permitted by the Italian legislation over worked-out landfill sections, awaiting the evaluation of expected waste settlements. A possible quantitative approach for field measurement and consequential evaluation of landfill CO2, CH4 emission rates in pairs consists of the static, non-stationary accumulation chamber technique. At the Italian level, a significant and recent situation of periodical landfill gas emission monitoring is represented by the sanitary landfill for non-hazardous waste of the Fano town district, where monitoring campaigns with the static chamber have been annually conducted during the last 5years (20052009). For the entire multiyear monitoring period, the resulting CO2, CH4 emission rates varied on the whole up to about 13,100g CO2 m?2d?1 and 3800g CH4 m?2d?1, respectively. The elaboration of these landfill gas emission data collected at the Fano case-study site during the monitoring campaigns, presented and discussed in the paper, gives rise to a certain scientific evidence of the possible negative effects derivable from the implementation of a temporary HDPE cover over a worked-out landfill section, notably: the lateral migration and concentration of landfill gas emissions through adjacent, active landfill sections when hydraulically connected; and consequently, the increase of landfill gas flux velocities throughout the reduced overall soil cover surface, giving rise to a flowing through of CH4 emissions without a significant oxidation. Thus, these circumstances are expected to cause a certain increase of the overall GHG emissions from the given landfill site.

There is an electron beam in the oscilloscope that moves in a nearly straight line from back to front, as a result of a potential difference of tens of thousands of volts. To show how a magnetic field can deflect a beam of charged particles, set an oscilloscope to produce a well-focused spot near the center of the screen. Position the north pole of one bar magnet directly above the beam of the oscilloscope, and position the south pole of another magnet directly below the beam as shown here. Visualization of longitudinal student data

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

We use visualization to find patterns in educational data. We represent student scores from high-stakes exams as flow vectors in fluids, define two types of streamlines and trajectories, and show that differences between streamlines and trajectories are due to regression to the mean. This issue is significant because it determines how quickly changes in long-term educational patterns can be deduced from score changes in consecutive years. To illustrate our methods, we examine a policy change in Texas that put increased pressure on public school students to pass several exams, and gave them resources to accomplish it. The response to this policy is evident from the changes in trajectories, although previous evaluation had concluded the program was ineffective. We pose the question of whether increased expenditure on education should be expected to correspond to improved student scores, or whether it should correspond to an increased rate of improvement in student scores.

Most of the energy generated by power plants in the United States comes from burning fossil fuels. Greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change, are released into the atmosphere as these fossil fuels are burned. When we use less energy at school, at work, and at home, fewer fossil fuels are consumed, which means less pollution and a way to help mitigate global warming. REU Students Initial Perceptions of Scientific Ethics

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

One goal of undergraduate research particularly Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs is to help students become aware of the importance of ethical conduct in research. The Survey of Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) indicates that biology students believe they learn more about ethical conduct from their research experiences than physics students. Motivated by this we initiated a study of both biology and physics REU students at Kansas State University consisting of pre? and post?interviews regarding their understanding of ethics with results to be compared to the SURE. This paper presents the students initial perceptions (from the pre?interview) of how ethical issues impact science in general as well as their own specific work. We also discuss the differences in the interview responses of the two groups.

Students difficulties with integration in electricity

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

This study investigates the common difficulties that students in introductory physics experience when solving problems involving integration in the context of electricity. We conducted teaching-learning interviews with 15 students in a second-semester calculus-based introductory physics course on several problems involving integration. We found that although most of the students could recognize the need for an integral in solving the problem, they failed to set up the desired integral. We provide evidence that this failure can be attributed to students inability to understand the infinitesimal term in the integral and/or failure to understand the notion of accumulation of an infinitesimal physical quantity. This work supports and extends previous research on students difficulties with integration in physics.

Enhanced training effectiveness using automated student assessment.

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Training simulators have become increasingly popular tools for instructing humans on performance in complex environments. However, the question of how to provide individualized and scenario-specific assessment and feedback to students remains largely an open question. In this work, we follow-up on previous evaluations of the Automated Expert Modeling and Automated Student Evaluation (AEMASE) system, which automatically assesses student performance based on observed examples of good and bad performance in a given domain. The current study provides an empirical evaluation of the enhanced training effectiveness achievable with this technology. In particular, we found that students given feedback via the AEMASE-based debrief tool performed significantly better than students given only instructor feedback.

Student Support-Radiochemistry Conference

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The objectives of this program were to provide bursaries to assist students and post-doctoral fellows being trained in radiochemistry to actively participate in the 18th International Symposium in Radiopharmaceutical Sciences (ISRS-2009) held in Edmonton, Canada on July 12-19, 2009. The critical shortage of scientists in the U.S. trained radiochemistry and imaging scientists is well documented. Scientific meetings such as ISRS-2009 provide an outstanding opportunity to recruit active researchers and trainees in a venue that can inspire and mentor them to join the next generation of radiochemical scientists. The ISRS-2009 was particularly important in this meeting this objective since it is regarded as the premier international meeting that features investigators from across the globe involved in cutting-edge research to synthesize and characterize radiolabeled biomolecules for molecular imaging in living systems. For example, radiochemistry and radionuclide imaging scientists presented new approaches and technologies for synthesis of novel radiolabeled biomolecules with PET (including, 11C and 18F) and SPECT (including 99mTc and 111In). The radiochemical and radionuclide imaging research presented at the ISRS-2009 are directly related to and supportive of the biomolecular radioisotope, radiochemistry and imaging programs in the DOE, Office of Science (BER). There were a total of fifteen students or post-doctoral fellows from a variety of radiochemistry and radionuclide imaging research and educational institutions from across the country (Table 1). Announcements of the SRS/DOE bursary award program were made on the ISRS-2009 meeting web site (www.ISRS18.com), on the SRS website (www.srsweb.org), and via SRS email blasts (announcement Figure 1). The applications were reviewed and awardees selected by a committee composed of Dr. Ken Krohn, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, Dr. William Eckelman, Bethesda, MD,Dr. Michael Welch, Washington University, St. Louis, MO and Dr. Wynn Volkert, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO. The trainees presented results of their work via either an oral or a poster presentation. Abstracts of their papers presented at the ISRS-2009 meeting were published in the Journal of Labelled Compounds and Radiopharmaceuticals, Volume 52, Supplement 1, 2009 (www.interscience.wiley.com/journal/jier), the official Abstract Book for the ISRS-2009 meeting. A copy of the published abstracts presented by each of the fifteen trainees receiving the SRS/DOE Bursary Award is provided on the following pages. The list of the fifteen trainees receiving the 2009 Bursary awards funded by this DOE grant was published in the July 2010 issue of Nuclear Medicine and Biology (Volume 37(5), July 2010) and in the SRS website with appropriate acknowledgement to the U.S. Department [See Appendix 1 for copies of the 15 student/trainee abstracts].

Podcasting: are student competencies hindering its potential?

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Currently, podcasting has been overwhelmingly embraced by commercial and community media sources such as T.V. and radio to expand their listening audience. This same concept can be utilised from an educational point of view, where podcasting has the potential to expand flexible learning environments to give students more control over where and when they engage with their learning experience. This paper presents a study on the impact of short podcasts on students and academic staff in the Faculty of Economics and Business, The University of Sydney and has exposed a potential concern about the technical competencies of the student community.
