  10. REFRIG-12: a graphics-augmented interactive program for designing vapor-compression refrigeration/heatpump cycles

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Davis, B.W.

    1984-09-07T23:59:59.000Z

REGRIG-12 is an interactive program that serves as a tool for designing and analyzing thermodynamic vapor-compression refrigeration/heatpump cycles. The software, intended for use in the CP/M environment, is formulated so that graphic and alphanumeric responses to design decisions are displayed simultaneously on separate monitors. REFRIG-12 may be modified easily to run on systems that do not have a graphics capability by simply deleting the graphics functions from the source programs. Temperature-Entropy property coordinates are used to describe the thermodynamic processes Freon-12 undergoes as it passes through the various mechanical components which ultimately produce the cycle. The processes are displayed graphically as the user makes the decisions to design a refrigeration cycle. System prompts and software interlocks are designed into REFRIG-12 so the user can proceed comfortably and easily through the operations that lead to a cycle design. When a design has been completed, REFRIG-12 offers the user an opportunity to make changes to it. The effects of design changes become graphically discernible through successive overlays on the graphics monitor. DOTPLOT can be executed to produce a hard copy of the graphics monitor display. Summaries of the cycle performance, pertinent energy transfers, and other engineering consequences of the design specifications can also be presented - at user option - on both the CRT and the printer. REFRIG-12 is organized so that a relatively small main program controls 35 subroutines. Each subroutine has stand-alone characteristics and may be used with programs having other primary purposes. The subroutines can be conveniently merged (or chained) into system memory as needed.

This report covers a two-year program to develop fully dense Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} matrix SiC whisker composites with enhanced properties over monolithic Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} materials. The primary goal was to develop a composite with a fracture toughness > 10 MPa{radical}m, capable of using high pressure glass encapsulated HIP'ing. Coating methods were developed to apply thin (<150nm) stoichiometric BN layers to SiC whiskers and also to apply a dual coating of SiC over carbon to the whiskers. Fracture toughness of the composites was determined to increase as the quantity of whiskers (or elongated grains) with their axis perpendicular to the crack plane increased. Of the interface compositions evaluated in this effort, carbon was determined to be the most effective for increasing toughness. The highest toughnesses (6.8--7.0 MPa{radical}m) were obtained with uniaxially aligned carbon coated whiskers. There was no evidence of the carbon coating compromising the oxidation resistance of the composites at 1370{degree}C.

An expert panel initiated discussion on a number of key questions facing the role of 4-m and small telescopes in the new era of 8-m telescopes. The panel and audience agreed that the 4-m class telescope role would necessarily evolve, but would still be important in the coming years. The need for an active development programme of competitive instrumentation for 4-m class telescopes, and in particular the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) was stressed. In conjunction with this, the need to de-commission instrumentation made redundant by 8-m class telescopes was noted. New operational modes, including greater emphasis on survey programmes, and possibly queue scheduling, coupled with changes to the procedures for allocating time were seen as desirable. The panel and audience supported the Isaac Newton Group's emphasis on the development of instrumentation to exploit its imminent deployment of the WHT's facility Adaptive Optics system.

An array of connected plates mounted on the inside wall of the vacuum vessel of a magnetic confinement reactor in order to provide a protective surface for energy deposition inside the vessel. All fasteners are concealed and protected beneath the plates, while the plates themselves share common mounting points. The entire array is installed with torqued nuts on threaded studs; provision also exists for thermal expansion by mounting each plate with two of its four mounts captured in an oversize grooved spool. A spool-washer mounting hardware allows one edge of a protective plate to be torqued while the other side remains loose, by simply inverting the spool-washer hardware.

We have used high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the VLT and UVES to determine abundances of 17 elements in 4 red giants in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Our [Fe/H] values range from --2.10 to --0.97, confirming previous findings of a large metallicity spread. We have combined our data with similar data for five Sculptor giants studied recently to form one of the largest samples of high resolution abundances yet obtained for a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, covering essentially the full known metallicity range. These properties allow us to establish trends of [X/Fe] with [Fe/H] for many elements, X. The trends are significantly different from the trends seen in galactic halo and globular cluster stars. We compare our Sculptor sample to their most similar Galactic counterparts and find substantial differences remain even with these stars. The many discrepancies in the relationships between [X/Fe] as seen in Sculptor compared with Galactic field stars indicates that our halo cannot be made up in bulk of stars similar to those presently seen in dwarf spheroidal galaxies like Sculptor. These results have serious implications for the Searle-Zinn and hierarchical galaxy formation scenarios. We also find that the most metal-rich star in our sample is a heavy element-rich star. A very high percentage of such heavy element stars are now known in dwarf spheroidals compared to the halo, further mitigating against the formation of the halo from such objects.

Aerosol samples were collected at a pasture site in the Amazon Basin as part of the project LBA-SMOCC-2002 (Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia - Smoke Aerosols, Clouds, Rainfall and Climate: Aerosols from Biomass Burning Perturb Global and Regional Climate). Sampling was conducted during the late dry season, when the aerosol composition was dominated by biomass burning emissions, especially in the submicron fraction. A 13-stage Dekati low-pressure impactor (DLPI) was used to collect particles with nominal aerodynamic diameters (D{sub p}) ranging from 0.03 to 0.10 m. Gravimetric analyses of the DLPI substrates and filters were performed to obtain aerosol mass concentrations. The concentrations of total, apparent elemental, and organic carbon (TC, EC{sub a}, and OC) were determined using thermal and thermal-optical analysis (TOA) methods. A light transmission method (LTM) was used to determine the concentration of equivalent black carbon (BC{sub e}) or the absorbing fraction at 880 nm for the size-resolved samples. During the dry period, due to the pervasive presence of fires in the region upwind of the sampling site, concentrations of fine aerosols (D{sub p} < 2.5 {mu}m: average 59.8 {mu}g m{sup -3}) were higher than coarse aerosols (D{sub p} > 2.5 {mu}m: 4.1 {mu}g m{sup -3}). Carbonaceous matter, estimated as the sum of the particulate organic matter (i.e., OC x 1.8) plus BC{sub e}, comprised more than 90% to the total aerosol mass. Concentrations of EC{sub a} (estimated by thermal analysis with a correction for charring) and BCe (estimated by LTM) averaged 5.2 {+-} 1.3 and 3.1 {+-} 0.8 {mu}g m{sup -3}, respectively. The determination of EC was improved by extracting water-soluble organic material from the samples, which reduced the average light absorption {angstrom} exponent of particles in the size range of 0.1 to 1.0 {mu}m from > 2.0 to approximately 1.2. The size-resolved BC{sub e} measured by the LTM showed a clear maximum between 0.4 and 0.6 m in diameter. The concentrations of OC and BC{sub e} varied diurnally during the dry period, and this variation is related to diurnal changes in boundary layer thickness and in fire frequency.
