CFD Simulation and Measurement Validation of Air Distribution at the Hunan International Exhibition Center

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The Hunan International Exhibition Center (HIEC) is a large space building. A stratified air-conditioning system on the second floor of the building has been adopted. Due to some problems with the air supply jet diffuser, CFD simulations were carried out to predict air distribution. Meanwhile, field measurement results were used to validate the CFD simulation results. A good agreement of simulated and test results was obtained. Based on simulation results, some analyses and suggestions are put forward to improve air distribution.

The Application of Frequency-Conversion Technology in Groundwater Source Heat Pump System Reconstruction

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Deep well pump power is relatively ubiquitous in the groundwater heat pump air-conditioning system in some hotels in Hunan, and the heat pump usually meets the change of the load by throttling. Therefore, frequency conversion technology is proposed to be applied in the deep well pump so as to save energy.

On the Inefficiency of Portfolio Insurance and Caveats to the Mean/Downside-Risk Framework

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Portfolio insurance strategies based on options typically treat the investment in the risky asset, e.g., stock, as fixed. We show in a mean/downside-risk framework that such a strategy is inefficient. Using at the money put options, expected returns can be increased by more than 250 basis points without taking on more risk. Gains can become arbitrarily large when one uses options with extremely high strike prices. This is due to a serious caveat to the mean/downside-risk framework that is typically adopted in the literature by substituting downside-risk measures for standard risk measures such as the variance of returns. These pathologic results vanish when one maximizes an appropriately chosen HARA utility function. In this framework, fixing the holding of the risky asset in advance leads to efficiency losses that vary between 250 and 650 basis points depending on the degree of risk aversion.

Inclusion of exact exchange in the noniterative partial-differential-equation method of electron-molecule scattering: Application to e-N/sub 2/

SciTech Connect

A method for including exchange exactly in the framework of the noniterative partial-differential-equation (PDE) approach (Phys. Rev. A 28, 621 (1983)) to electron-molecule scattering is presented. The method consists of breaking down the exchange equation into a set of inhomogeneous equations without integral terms. The difference form of the latter can then be solved by a straightforward generalization of the uncoupled noniterative PDE technique. Application is made to e-N/sub 2/ scattering in the fixed-nuclei approximation. The method is checked by comparing with other static- (exact) exchange calculations; agreement is found to be satisfactory particularly with new (unpublished) linear-algebraic results of Collins. A polarization potential, previously derived on the basis of a polarized-orbital treatment generalized to molecular targets, is then added; comparison is made with our previous results based on a Hara local exchange (HFEGE) approximation. The results show that HFEGE, as we had previously modified it, was less attractive than exact exchange. With exact exchange we are led alternatively to weaken the short-range part of the polarization potential with the consequence that agreement with other (exact) exchange-adiabatic calculations is excellent. The modified polarization potential is expected to be very useful in more elaborate scattering calculations.

NF-kB activation by ultraviolet light not dependent on a nuclear signal

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Exposure of mammalian cells to radiation triggers the ultraviolet (UV) response, which includes activation of activator protein-1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB). This was postulated to occur by induction of a nuclear signaling cascade by damaged DNA. Recently, induction of AP-1 by UV was shown to be mediated by a pathway involving Src tyrosine kinases and the Ha-Ras small guanosine triphosphate-binding protein, proteins located at the plasma membrane. It is demonstrated here that the same pathway mediates induction of NF-kB by UV. Because inactive NF-kB is stored in the cytosol, analysis of its activation directly tests the involvement of a nuclear-initiated signaling cascade. Enucleated cells are fully responsive to UV both in NF-kB induction and in activation of another key signaling event. Therefore, the UV response does not require a signal generated in the nucleus and is likely to be initiated at or near the plasma membrane.

Update on maintenance and service costs of commercial building ground-source heat pump systems

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

An earlier paper showed that commercial ground-source heat pump systems have significantly lower service and maintenance costs than alternative HVAC systems. This paper expands on those results by adding 13 more buildings to the original 25 sites and by comparing the results to the latest ASHRAE survey of HVAC maintenance costs. Data from the 38 sites are presented here including total (scheduled and unscheduled) maintenance costs in cents per square foot per year for base cost, in-house, and contractor-provided maintenance. Because some of the new sites had maintenance costs that were much higher than the industry norm, the resulting data are not normally distributed. Analysis (O'Hara Hines 1998) indicated that a log-normal distribution is a better fit; thus, the data are analyzed and presented here as log-normal. The log-mean annual total maintenance costs for the most recent year of the survey ranged from 6.07 cents per square foot to 8.37 cents per square foot for base cost and contractor-provided maintenance, respectively.

Shock tube and theoretical studies on the thermal decomposition of propane : evidence for a roaming radical channel.

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The thermal decomposition of propane has been studied using both shock tube experiments and ab initio transition state theory-based master equation calculations. Dissociation rate constants for propane have been measured at high temperatures behind reflected shock waves using high-sensitivity H-ARAS detection and CH{sub 3} optical absorption. The two major dissociation channels at high temperature are C{sub 3}H{sub 8} {yields} CH{sub 3} + C{sub 2}H{sub 5} (eq 1a) and C{sub 3}H{sub 8} {yields} CH{sub 4} + C{sub 2}H{sub 4} (eq 1b). Ultra high-sensitivity ARAS detection of H-atoms produced from the decomposition of the product, C{sub 2}H{sub 5}, in (1a), allowed measurements of both the total decomposition rate constants, k{sub total}, and the branching to radical products, k{sub 1a}/k{sub total}. Theoretical analyses indicate that the molecular products are formed exclusively through the roaming radical mechanism and that radical products are formed exclusively through channel 1a. The experiments were performed over the temperature range 1417-1819 K and gave a minor contribution of (10 {+-} 8%) due to roaming. A multipass CH{sub 3} absorption diagnostic using a Zn resonance lamp was also developed and characterized in this work using the thermal decomposition of CH{sub 3}I as a reference reaction. The measured rate constants for CH{sub 3}I decomposition agreed with earlier determinations from this laboratory that were based on I-atom ARAS measurements. This CH{sub 3} diagnostic was then used to detect radicals from channel 1a allowing lower temperature (1202-1543 K) measurements of k1a to be determined. Variable reaction coordinate-transition state theory was used to predict the high pressure limits for channel (1a) and other bond fission reactions in C{sub 3}H{sub 8}. Conventional transition state theory calculations were also used to estimate rate constants for other tight transition state processes. These calculations predict a negligible contribution (<1%) from all other bond fission and tight transition state processes, indicating that the bond fission channel (1a) and the roaming channel (1b) are indeed the only active channels at the temperature and pressure ranges of the present experiments. The predicted reaction exo- and endothermicities are in excellent agreement with the current version of the Active Thermochemical Tables. Master equation calculations incorporating these transition state theory results yield predictions for the temperature and pressure dependence of the dissociation rate constants for channel 1a. The final theoretical results reliably reproduce the measured dissociation rate constants that are reported here and in the literature. The experimental data are well reproduced over the 500-2500 K and 1 x 10{sup -4} to 100 bar range (errors of {approx}15% or less) by the following Troe parameters for Ar as the bath gas: k{sub {infinity}} = 1.55 x 10{sup 24}T{sup -2.034} exp(-45490/T) s{sup -1}, k{sub 0} = 7.92 x 10{sup 53}T{sup -16.67} exp(-50380/T) cm{sup 3} s{sup -1}, and F{sub c} = 0.190 exp(-T/3091) + 0.810 exp(-T/128) + exp(-8829/T).
