While the most stable calcite polymorph can grow as macroscopic single crystals, the process of biomineralisation can alternatively lead to complex polycrystalline assembles that serve as functional materials in nature. Air quality metrics and wireless technology to maximize the energy efficiency of HVAC in a working auditorium

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract HVAC is the single largest consumer of energy in commercial and residential buildings. Reducing its energy consumption without compromising occupants comfort would have environmental and financial benefits. A wireless testbed consisting of a retrofitted wireless Condensation Particle Counter (CPC), 25 wireless temperature sensors, 2 HVAC-embedded temperature and CO2 sensors, and a webcam was deployed in a working auditorium, to monitor the air quality, temperature, and occupancy of the room. The main objectives were to identify particle sources using the retrofitted CPC, map the temperature variability of the room and select an optimal sensor location for HVAC control using clustering algorithms, and examine possible energy savings by operating the HVAC only during periods of occupancy using calendar-based scheduling and air quality indicators as proxies of occupancy. All air quality metrics increased with higher occupancy rates, although HVAC-modes changes were also identified as a source for particle numbers. Operating the HVAC using calendar-based scheduling resulted in energy savings of between 8 and 79%, increasing if occupancy events were scheduled close together. Finally, CO2 was the strongest predictor of occupancy counts with an R2 of 0.62 (pfilters should be replaced.

Project Description The Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) will perform research to understand the performance of fuel used as heat sources in radioisotope power systems under accident scenarios that would subject the heat sources to solid rocket propellant fire. JHU/APL will subject fuel simulants (no radioactive material is used for these tests) to solid rocket propellant fires to better understand the potential for material release under these conditions. They will also perform tests to characterize the fires, which will improve predictions of fuel performance for untested conditions. The information from these tests may be used to support the

Energy Programs at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Quarterly Report, October-December 1980

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is engaged in developing energy resources, utilization concepts, and monitoring and storage methods. This Quarterly Report summarizes the work on the various tasks as of 31 December 1980. The Energy Quarterly Report is divided into five sections. The first, Geothermal Energy Development Planning and Technical Assistance, supported by the Department of Energy/Division of Geothermal Energy (DOE/DGE), contains reports on the progress of geothermal-related tasks on which effort was concentrated during the quarter. The second section, Operational Research, Hydroelectric Power Development, supported by the Department of Energy/Resource Applications (DOE/RA), contains a report on institutional problems for small-scale hydroelectric power development in the southeastern states and a list of documents published by APL in the hydroelectric program and in the geothermal program, above. The third section, Seismotectonic Investigations, contains an article on work on the geologic structure of the Danbury Quadrangle that is supported by the Reactor Safety Research Division of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and an in-house supported study on a new method for assessing earthquakes in intraplate regions. The fourth section, Energy Conversion and Storage Techniques, contains four articles. The first is an evaluation of the Einstein refrigerator, supported by independent IR and D funds. The second concerns fly-wheel technology development at APL supported by the Department of Energy, Division of Energy Storage (DOE/STOR). The third is a report on APL energy conservation efforts at its own buildings, and the fourth is an article on liquefied natural gas (LNG) safety evaluation, supported by the National Academy of Sciences. The fifth section explores the value of establishing an Energy Research Institute at The Johns Hopkins University.

Effect of fractures on reserve calculations as determined by petrology: Birthright field, Hopkins County, Texas

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Birthright field in Hopkins County, Texas, produces oil and gas from Jurassic carbonate grainstone deposits of the upper Smackover Formation. The field was discovered in 1965 by the drilling of the Schneider and Corey 1 E.M. Strode well. This well initially tested 491 BOPD from a 34-ft interval at 9,519 ft. The field has an oil-water contact at subsea 9,090 ft and a gas-oil contact at subsea 8,980 ft. Ten wells were originally drilled in the 800-ac field, but only six oil and one gas wells were put on production. The estimated in-place reserves in 1969 were 6.4 million bbl oil, 1.3 million bbl condensate, and 14.97 bcf gas, with an estimated primary recovery of 22%. The total cumulative oil production to 1986 was 3.19 million bbl oil. The grainstones of the producing interval are composed of ooids, pisoids, pelecypod fragments, grapestones, and fecal pellets. This shallow marine bar deposit has been extensively leached and cemented. Fracturing and brecciation have taken place causing many grains to be broken and sheared. Many grains have been coated by early diagenetic fibrous rim cement indicative of leaching in vadose and phreatic conditions. These conditions have caused significant variations in the structural conditions and sizes of the coated grains. Anhydrite and sparry calcite have subsequently filled many of the pores, especially below the oil-water contact. It is though that these factors may have affected actual recoverable reserves, and that petrology can be an effective tool in reservoir evaluation, especially where recovered reserves are greater than had been initially calculated.

Test of Sabines reverberation time in ergodic auditoriums within geometrical acoustics

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In room acoustics Sabines formula for the reverberation time as a function of its volume and effective surface absorption is valid in the limit of a perfectly diffuse sound. In the spirit of the general discussion of Joyce [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 5 8 643 (1975)] in the geometrical acoustic limit and as a paradigm of the complex three?dimensional problem here a simple two?dimensional (2?D) room with the shape of a stadium with smooth boundaries is considered. In this system it is known that almost all trajectories are chaotic in the strongest sense of the term namely ergodic mixing and K?complex. Numerical results are reported on the decay law of an impulse sound and on its characteristic reverberation time as a function of room volume (in 2D the stadium surface) and effective surface absorption (in 2D effective perimeter absorption). In the limit of very small absorptions Sabines law is verified with good accuracy. However these results show that larger but still small absorptions lead to a departure from a pure exponential decay. This stems from the existence of finite time correlations that are important at short times.

Measuring ocean waves from space; Proceedings of the Symposium, Johns Hopkins University, Laurel, MD, Apr. 15-17, 1986

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Papers are presented on ocean-wave prediction; the quasi-universal form of the spectra of wind-generated gravity waves at different stages of their development; the limitations of the spectral measurements and observations of the group structure of surface waves; the effect of swell on the growth of wind wave; operational wave forecasting; ocean-wave models, and seakeeping using directional wave spectra. Consideration is given to microwave measurements of the ocean-wave directional spectra; SIR research; estimating wave energy spectra from SAR imagery, with the radar ocean-wave spectrometer, and SIR-B; the wave-measurement capabilities of the surface contour radar and the airborne oceanographic lidar; and SIR-B ocean-wave enhancement with fast-Fourier transform techniques. Topics discussed include wave-current interaction; the design and applicability of Spectrasat; the need for a global wave monitoring system; the age and source of ocean swell observed in Hurricane Josephine; and the use of satellite technology for insulin treatment.
