Room-temperature condensation in whispering gallery microresonators assisted by longitudinal optical phonons

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We report condensation of hexagonal whispering gallery modes (WGM) at room temperature in ZnO microwires that embody nearly perfect polygonal whispering gallery microresonators. The condensate regime is achieved in the UV spectral range only at energies below the first longitudinal optical (LO) phonon replica of the free ZnO A-exciton transition and at non-zero wave vectors. We demonstrate that the multimodality of the WGM system and the high population of free excitons and phonons with various momenta strongly enhance the probability of an interaction of quasiparticles of the cavity exciton-photon system with LO phonons. We further examine the far-field mode pattern of lasing WGM and demonstrate their spatial coherence.

Salt Creek Investigation Salt Creek Investigation</2> "Whales Dying in the Pacific Ocean" "Fish Dying in Lake Michigan" Recent headlines remind us of environmental problems near and far away. Scientists have been wondering if these problems could be due to the warmer temperatures this past spring and summer or could there be other reasons? Lack of rain and near drought conditions have forced many areas to restrict water use. We know from past history that pollution affects our drinking water and marine life. Remember what we read about Lake Erie and from reading A River Ran Wild by Lynne Cherry. There are many factors affecting the environment around us . . . even in Salt Creek which runs through our area. We may not be able to investigate the Pacific Ocean and Lake Michigan

Field-scale acoustic investigation of a damaged anisotropic shale during a gallery excavation

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In the Opalinus Clay formation at the Mont Terri Underground Rock Laboratory, the gallery Ga08 was excavated in August 2008 to join the end-face of the pre-existing gallery Ga04. The aim of the present work was to perform in situ acoustic experiments to monitor the evolution of the Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ) induced during the gallery construction. The end-face of Ga04 was instrumented with two arrays of acoustic transducers allowing for the active and passive seismic monitoring, i.e. acoustic survey and micro-seismicity. From the acoustic survey data, which required a high energy acoustic source to emit high frequency signals (21, 25, 31 and 38kHz), the rock mass was observed to be anisotropic and heterogeneous at the scale of the experiment. P-wave velocities were determined to be, in average, between 3300m/s along a structural bedding plane, and 2700m/s at ? ? 70 incidence relative to that. Assuming a transversely isotropic shale formation, the P-wave velocity dependence versus ? was modeled using Thomsen's Weak Transverse Isotropy model (Thomsen, 1986) [36]. Thomsen's P-wave anisotropy parameter was found to be ? ? 0.15 , and the fifth Thomsen's parameter controlling the deviation of the wave front from an ellipsoidal geometry was found to be ? ? 0.16 . The S-wave velocity was estimated along a single direction of aligned receivers and turned out to be around 1560m/s at ? ? 30 . We also show that the rock mass acts as a frequency filter for acoustic waves, related to the rock mass heterogeneities, i.e. the inter-bedding structure, which induces wave scattering and refraction. From the micro-seismicity data, we identified a large number of micro-seismic events (MSEs) detected on the acoustic arrays during and following the excavation. Most of the \\{MSEs\\} were induced on the excavated face but we also located some \\{MSEs\\} inside the rock mass itself. We show that these events are located close to a major fault, which seems to be reactivated by the excavation process.

Ion mobility sensor system

DOE Patents [OSTI]

An ion mobility sensor system including an ion mobility spectrometer and a differential mobility spectrometer coupled to the ion mobility spectrometer. The ion mobility spectrometer has a first chamber having first end and a second end extending along a first direction, and a first electrode system that generates a constant electric field parallel to the first direction. The differential mobility spectrometer includes a second chamber having a third end and a fourth end configured such that a fluid may flow in a second direction from the third end to the fourth end, and a second electrode system that generates an asymmetric electric field within an interior of the second chamber. Additionally, the ion mobility spectrometer and the differential mobility spectrometer form an interface region. Also, the first end and the third end are positioned facing one another so that the constant electric field enters the third end and overlaps the fluid flowing in the second direction.

Visible Photoluminescence from Cubic (3C) Silicon Carbide Microdisks Coupled to High Quality Whispering Gallery Modes

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We present the design, fabrication and characterization of cubic (3C) silicon carbide microdisk resonators with high quality factor modes at visible and near infrared wavelengths (600 - 950 nm). Whispering gallery modes with quality factors as high as 2,300 and corresponding mode volumes V ~ 2 ({\\lambda}/n)^3 are measured using laser scanning confocal microscopy at room temperature. We obtain excellent correspondence between transverse-magnetic (TM) and transverse-electric (TE) polarized resonances simulated using Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method and those observed in experiment. These structures based on ensembles of optically active impurities in 3C-SiC resonators could play an important role in diverse applications of nonlinear and quantum photonics, including low power optical switching and quantum memories.

Barium fluoride whispering-gallery-mode disk-resonator with one billion quality-factor

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We demonstrate a monolithic optical whispering gallery mode resonator fabricated with barium fluoride (BaF$_2$) with an ultra-high quality ($Q$) factor above $10^9$ at $1550$ nm, and measured with both the linewidth and cavity-ring-down methods. Vertical scanning optical profilometry shows that the root mean square surface roughness of $2$ nm is achieved for our mm-size disk. To the best of our knowledge, we show for the first time that one billion $Q$-factor is achievable by precision polishing in relatively soft crystals with mohs hardness of ~$3$. We show that complex thermo-optical dynamics can take place in these resonators. Beside usual applications in nonlinear optics and microwave photonics, high energy particle scintillation detection utilizing monolithic BaF$_2$ resonators potentially becomes feasible.

3 - Mobile Robot Dynamics

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Mobile robot dynamics is a challenging field on its own, especially due to the variety of the imposed constraints. Delicate stability and control problems that have very often to be faced are due to longitudinal or lateral slip, and to the features of the ground (roughness, etc.). This chapter has the following objectives: (i) to present the general dynamic modeling concepts and techniques of robots, (ii) to study the NewtonEuler and Lagrange dynamic models of differential-drive mobile robots, (iii) to study the dynamics of differential-drive mobile robots with longitudinal and lateral slip, (iv) to derive a dynamic model of car-like wheeled mobile robots, (v) to derive a dynamic model of three-wheel omnidirectional robots, and (vi) to derive a dynamic model of four-wheel mecanum omnidirectional robots.

This paper describes the method of building a robust N-state Markov model that describes visitor's behaviour in a gallery room. The built model can be used in planning of exhibitions, in modelling of visitor's preferences, and/or in generation of predictions related with exhibition lasting, expected sales and pricing. Presented system performance improvements are realised through Bayesian belief network (BBN) and maximum a posterior probability (MAP) decision approximation algorithm.

Mobile systems capability plan

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This plan was prepared to initiate contracting for and deployment of these mobile system services. 102,000 cubic meters of retrievable, contact-handled TRU waste are stored at many sites around the country. Also, an estimated 38,000 cubic meters of TRU waste will be generated in the course of waste inventory workoff and continuing DOE operations. All the defense TRU waste is destined for disposal in WIPP near Carlsbad NM. To ship TRU waste there, sites must first certify that the waste meets WIPP waste acceptance criteria. The waste must be characterized, and if not acceptable, subjected to additional processing, including repackaging. Most sites plan to use existing fixed facilities or open new ones between FY1997-2006 to perform these functions; small-quantity sites lack this capability. An alternative to fixed facilities is the use of mobile systems mounted in trailers or skids, and transported to sites. Mobile systems will be used for all characterization and certification at small sites; large sites can also use them. The Carlsbad Area Office plans to pursue a strategy of privatization of mobile system services, since this offers a number of advantages. To indicate the possible magnitude of the costs of deploying mobile systems, preliminary estimates of equipment, maintenance, and operating costs over a 10-year period were prepared and options for purchase, lease, and privatization through fixed-price contracts considered.

An electromagnetic perpetuum mobile?

E-Print Network [OSTI]

A charge moving freely in orbit around the Earth radiates according to Larmor's formula. If the path is closed, it would constitute a perpetuum mobile. The solution to this energy paradox is found in an article by C. M. DeWitt and B. DeWitt from 1964. The main point is that the equation of motion of a radiating charge is modified in curved spacetime. In the present article we explain the physics behind this modification, and use the generalized equation to solve the perpetuum mobile paradox.

Mobile Biomass Pelletizing System

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This grant project examines multiple aspects of the pelletizing process to determine the feasibility of pelletizing biomass using a mobile form factor system. These aspects are: the automatic adjustment of the die height in a rotary-style pellet mill, the construction of the die head to allow the use of ceramic materials for extreme wear, integrating a heat exchanger network into the entire process from drying to cooling, the use of superheated steam for adjusting the moisture content to optimum, the economics of using diesel power to operate the system; a break-even analysis of estimated fixed operating costs vs. tons per hour capacity. Initial development work has created a viable mechanical model. The overall analysis of this model suggests that pelletizing can be economically done using a mobile platform.

Mobile multiwave lidar complexes

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Multiwave mobile lidar complexes (MLCs) are designed and developed. A number of vehicle-based MLCs are built. The set of complex lidar probing data obtained with the help of MLCs is synchronised in space and time, covers a large area (the operation range of an MLC is 15 km), and is based on a unified methodological approach. The results of probing contain information on the concentration and physical nature of atmospheric aerosol, chemical composition of the gaseous phase of the atmosphere, wind and turbulence. The obtained data form the basis for a complex analysis of the ecological situation and prognosis of its development.

Mobile Window Thermal Test

Broader source: All U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office Webpages (Extended Search)

Mobile Window Thermal Test (MoWiTT) Facility Mobile Window Thermal Test (MoWiTT) Facility winter.jpg (469135 bytes) The window has come a long way since the days when it was a single pane of glass in a wood frame. Low-emissivity windows were designed to help buildings retain some of the energy that would have leaked out of less efficient windows. Designing efficient window-and-frame systems is one strategy for reducing the energy use of buildings. But the net energy flowing through a window is a combination of temperature- driven thermal flows and transmission of incident solar energy, both of which vary with time. U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), the window properties that control these flows, depend partly on ambient conditions. Window energy flows can affect how much energy a building uses, depending on when the window flows are available to help meet other energy demands within the building, and when they are adverse, adding to building energy use. This leads to a second strategy for reducing building energy use: using the beneficial solar gain available through a window, either for winter heating or for daylighting, while minimizing adverse flows.

Airline alliances: Mobilizing network resources

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Airline alliances represent examples of resource utilization across a network. This paper examines the need to distinguish between access to and mobilization of the resources held by allies. An ordinary least squares regression was applied to a sample from the Top International Airlines database. Our findings show that mobilization of the destinations of the partner companies through codeshare alliances has a positive and significant influence on the performance of airlines. Moreover, they suggest that the development of network resources mobilizing capability in increasingly dynamic and global environments will only generate an important source of competitive advantage when acted upon.

Measures of Human Mobility Using Mobile Phone Records Enhanced with GIS Data

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In the past decade, large scale mobile phone data have become available for the study of human movement patterns. These data hold an immense promise for understanding human behavior on a vast scale, and with a precision and accuracy never before possible with censuses, surveys or other existing data collection techniques. There is already a significant body of literature that has made key inroads into understanding human mobility using this exciting new data source, and there have been several different measures of mobility used. However, existing mobile phone based mobility measures are inconsistent, inaccurate, and confounded with social characteristics of local context. New measures would best be developed immediately as they will influence future studies of mobility using mobile phone data. In this article, we do exactly this. We discuss problems with existing mobile phone based measures of mobility and describe new methods for measuring mobility that address these concerns. Our measures of mobility, whic...

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Although communication has been investigated within relationship-oriented contexts, studies concerning communication within Customer Relationship Management (CRM) are scarce, especially when customer relationships are managed with the aid of the mobile medium. The purpose of this study is to increase general understanding of communication within the mobile context, in which the communicating parties are connected through the mobile medium. The authors present a model of the communication process within the mobile context based on a case study. The main results of the study indicate that the communication process within the mobile context differs significantly from the process through traditional channels.

The interaction of the microwave radiation emitted by mobile phones with the user's body is analyzed from the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) recommendations perspective as a correlation between the specific absorption ratio (SAR) of the mobile phone and the call duration. The relative position of the cell phone to the user's body the dielectric properties of the exposed body parts the SAR value and the call duration are considered in the local body temperature rise due to the microwave heating effect. The recommended local temperature rise limit in the human body is evaluated according to standards. The aim of this study is to disseminate information to young people especially high school students about the microwave thermal effects on the human body to make them aware of the environmental electromagnetic pollution and to offer them a simple method of biological self protection.

New depths with mobile rig

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Magee-Poole Drilling Company, a drilling contractor operating out of the south Texas drilling center of Alice, claims it operates the largest mobile drilling rig in the world. That is, it's the only wheel mounted portable rig that drills to 16,000 feet with 4 1/2-inch drill pipe - at least 3000 feet deeper than the previous mobile drilling rig ratings. The unit is designated the Ingersoll-Rand 1500 Series. What's more significant, according to co-owner Don Magee, is that the rig's portability gets the rotary table turning to the right sooner; it drills more footage per year. It rigs up in 1 1/2 days versus 3 to 4 days for a conventional skid type rig normally used at these depths. The unit's compact arrangement, with more components combined into single loads, makes possible its higher mobility. A conventional skid rig might require 25 to 30 truckloads to move the rig components, mud system, fuel and water tank, houses for utilities, storage and crew change, generators, and drill pipe. The new rig moves in anywhere from four to nine loads less. Further, the rig components weigh less without sacrificing durability.

Information mobility in complex networks

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The concept of information mobility in complex networks is introduced on the basis of a stochastic process taking place in the network. The transition matrix for this process represents the probability that the information arising at a given node is transferred to a target one. We use the fractional powers of this transition matrix to investigate the stochastic process at fractional time intervals. The mobility coefficient is then introduced on the basis of the trace of these fractional powers of the stochastic matrix. The fractional time at which a network diffuses 50% of the information contained in its nodes (1/k50) is also introduced. We then show that the scale-free random networks display a better spread of information than the non-scale-free ones. We study 38 real-world networks and analyze their performance in spreading information from their nodes. We find that some real-world networks perform even better than the scale-free networks with the same average degree and we point out some of the structural parameters that make this possible.

Ion mobility analysis of lipoproteins

DOE Patents [OSTI]

A medical diagnostic method and instrumentation system for analyzing noncovalently bonded agglomerated biological particles is described. The method and system comprises: a method of preparation for the biological particles; an electrospray generator; an alpha particle radiation source; a differential mobility analyzer; a particle counter; and data acquisition and analysis means. The medical device is useful for the assessment of human diseases, such as cardiac disease risk and hyperlipidemia, by rapid quantitative analysis of lipoprotein fraction densities. Initially, purification procedures are described to reduce an initial blood sample to an analytical input to the instrument. The measured sizes from the analytical sample are correlated with densities, resulting in a spectrum of lipoprotein densities. The lipoprotein density distribution can then be used to characterize cardiac and other lipid-related health risks.

Method for enhancing the resolving power of ion mobility separations over a limited mobility range

DOE Patents [OSTI]

A method for raising the resolving power, specificity, and peak capacity of conventional ion mobility spectrometry is disclosed. Ions are separated in a dynamic electric field comprising an oscillatory field wave and opposing static field, or at least two counter propagating waves with different parameters (amplitude, profile, frequency, or speed). As the functional dependencies of mean drift velocity on the ion mobility in a wave and static field or in unequal waves differ, only single species is equilibrated while others drift in either direction and are mobility-separated. An ion mobility spectrum over a limited range is then acquired by measuring ion drift times through a fixed distance inside the gas-filled enclosure. The resolving power in the vicinity of equilibrium mobility substantially exceeds that for known traveling-wave or drift-tube IMS separations, with spectra over wider ranges obtainable by stitching multiple segments. The approach also enables low-cutoff, high-cutoff, and bandpass ion mobility filters.

Mobile-Electron Ising Ferromagnet

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The general mobile-electron Ising ferromagnet (introduced by Fisher) is described, and its properties discussed: Electrons migrate over a lattice of spin- ions; when there are k electrons on the bond (i,j), their energy is ?k and they induce an Ising spin coupling between the spins i and j. The mean number of electrons per bond n is determined by the condition of electroneutrality. The model can be solved exactly in terms of the free energy of the underlying lattice and exhibits renormalized critical exponents: in the three-dimensional model, these are ?=0.33-0.36, ??1.43, and ?s?-0.14. The behavior of the simplest ferromagnetic model with k=0,1,or2 and n=2 depends, for a fixed mode of electron-ion coupling, only on n and ?=2?1-?0-?2. The variation of the critical point with n, ?, and the coupling energies is studied, and the behavior of the energy, magnetization, specific heat, and susceptibility is investigated. For certain parametric ranges, it is found that the spontaneous magnetization initially increases with T. The model exhibits a critical concentration for ordering (n=rc), and also a lower critical temperature below which M0(T) again vanishes. A brief survey of related models exhibiting one or the other of these properties is presented.

Mobile munitions assessment system development

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The United States has been involved in the development, testing, storage and disposal of chemical weapons since World War I. As a result, there are numerous sites which contain the presence of chemical warfare materiel. This materiel is in the form of buried surplus munitions, munitions that did not detonate during testing and other forms. These items pose a significant human health and environmental hazard and must be disposed of properly. The US Army was tasked by the Department of Defense with the remediation of all non-stockpile chemical warfare materiel. To help comply with this tasking, the Army Project Manager for Nonstockpile Chemical Materiel is sponsoring the development of a Mobile Munitions Assessment System (MMAS). The system is being developed by the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and Dugway Proving Ground. The purpose of the system is to inspect suspect munitions and containers, identify the fill, evaluate the fuzing and firing train and analyze samples from the surrounding area to determine if chemical warfare materiel is present. The information gained from the application of the MMAS and other systems is intended to be used to establish the best method to handle and dispose of a given munition and its contents.
